"Why am I seeing so much of Cursed Totem?" Yawgmoth is one of the top decks right now, and it runs tons of activated abilities - Delighted Halfling, Wall of Roots, Yawgmoth, Walking Ballista, and Agatha's Soul Cauldron also lets you distribute these abilities (and Grist) among creatures.
You gotta Solitude that Grief. You can lose your two best cards and face a big Grief or lose your two best cards and worst card for a clean battlefield.
Hey Phil, big fan over here, just one thing, i dont know if you had another thought, but in the match 1 (game 2) you decide to blow up the tower. This is usually the slightly suboptimal choice, if they have to use both of their lands to search for the third urzas land, youd want them to tap the tower so search for the other piece. Most of the time it doesnt matter, but there is virtually no downside. Just my thoughts. Great video :)
At 23:27 you say the Wurmcoil Engine is able to attack and gain your opponent life. While it wound up not mattering, this isn't true. Anything Kaldra Compleat damages gets exiled. While this usually doesn't actually happen, since most relevant things have less than 5 toughness and die to state based actions before the triggered ability can resolve, it is relevant here. What would happen is Kaldra deals 5 damage to Wurmcoil Engine during the First Strike Combat Damage step, which causes the ability to trigger. Wurmcoil Engine will then be exiled before it ever has a chance to deal it's damage during the normal Combat Damage step, meaning your opponent not only gains no life but also doesn't get the tokens since exiling isn't dying. Of course, this still didn't matter this game, but if you keep playing with Kaldra in modern this interaction will pop up eventually!
this desire for the perfect metagame answer nivana heaven happened to me once. it was Mardu Winter in standard, and i was building a standard control list, only i decided to include a few copies of Kambal in it. it was a blocker for early aggro starts and Mardu Vehicles despite being an aggro deck was made almost entirely out of noncreature spells. The goal wasn't to kill my opponent with the burn but rather to stonewall a few initial early turns on the ground and soak up enough life that i could pull ahead with efficient card draw and removal. and it did REALLY really well. I called the deck "Kambal's Chicken Noodle Soup" :P
Hello! In the game against tron, i would consider vialing in stoneforge mystic even if you lose the search trigger, as you already have kaldra in hand and in that matchup you generally want to clock opponent as hard as possible! You lose some value but i think it's a serious consideration in that specific matchup
Dunno if you’ve watched him but chip kay has been bashing his head against the modern DnT rock for awhile now. He dropped most the X/1s due to fury, but obviously that is changed, and came to the conclusion that cat is just too slow/conditional. Might want to check out his brews if you haven’t
Also failed to appreciate one of the more relevant ephemerate targets which is cat. Ephemerate in that triple ghost quarter game would have been lights out. Thanks for the content Phil! Love seeing more DnT in either format
Fury got banned in modern so no need to play around that. Also since you brought up playing around March of Wretched Sorrow in game 4 you could've held up your Ephemerate to fizzle it since it targets. 51:50
Game 2 round 2 (3?), I think Arbiter prior to En Vec is right because it insulates against Sheodred's Edict, right? En Vec is your best card in the matchup and Edict is the only thing that hits it? Some Scam player can correct me if they don't play Edicts main/side. Also, have you considered putting boring matchups at the end?
@ThrabenUniversity oh no, no, not what I meant. I agree, always keep the appropriate order. But, in that rare instance you entirely skip a round, dump it at the end. You could (should?) even keep the dialog discussing why you skipped a round where that round would have normally occurred
Can't help wonder in W/B is the way to go in modern with Shadow of Doubt doing it's best "we have oppo agent at home" impression. Then we're more in on paths, bow masters, maybe even shelly at the top end rather than vial, thalia, and other not well placed in the metagame cards.
Aether vial is indeed bad, IMO. I would replace it with 4x the one ring or more removal. It is awful in multiples because you don't have the card draw to use more than 1, it only gets used 1-2 times in a game where you start with it for the same reason, and it is dead if drawn after turn 2, even after turn 1 sometimes as it will mess up your curve. I think the one ring could really help the deck go long, as the deck lacks bombs other than stoneforge. Aether vial is still good in the yorion blink build specifically.
If death & taxes now loses to green tron, (it's absolute best matchup ?) it probably means that the deck is dead (and taxed to oblivion). Also I am a coffers player and the coffrs opponent got really unlucky, he should have won that match with just slightly less abysmal draws. 3-2 including wins vs an extremely unlucky coffers deck and the worst modern izzet deck i have ever seen (thing in the ice hah hah that is a pioneer card bro !) is a very bad showing for the deck, especially considering it was played by a pro of the deck... (and maybe even THE pro)
@@homerjs90 I think except for scam-rhino domination of just very easy to play and just dumb decks, the rest of the format is pretty fun. Most major archetypes have a representation and I do believe that it's much better before the beans ban. That card along with all of the omnath piles made modern insufferable. Right now I'd say it's not that bad.

I have been given this advice before, but I just think it is incorrect to not attack the land that produces three.

Grief in Modern is still such a feel bad card. Im really hoping we something in MH3 to deal with it that doesnt cost mana
they kinda made grief better with the flare. Now you can pitch cast grief, then sac the grief before it dies to its own ability.
