Howl's Moving Castle is partially chaotic because it replaces the main conflict of the original book by Diana Wynne Jones with the entire war plot, which isn't at all present in the original. iirc it's a critique of the Iraq War, showing how meaningless, brutal violence disrupts this idyllic fantastical love story.
I wish they had made it more like the book, it’s such a fun story
but also the war plot is much much less complex than all the stuff in the book
Yeah it's a beautiful film but a horrible adaptation and the movies plot and themes are hampered by trying to fit them into the shape of a source media that really didn't support them (tho like you could do an anti war narrative in ingary but not like that) I really wish Miyazaki had just chosen to do something inspired by instead of adapted from.
The book also just plays so heavily on western fairytale canon in a way that I don't think Miyazaki tried to respect
to be fair, a true adaption to the books would be a trilogy or a 6-hour movie (the audio book is 8h), there is a ton of inner monologues and characters being in the know way before the pov knows, things happening in secret etc. The ghibli version is a perfect compromise for me, but I love both the movie and the book.
@@thayet Yeah, absolutely this. Ultimately Miyazaki was trying to do something very different, and I would say the message of the movie is enhanced by seeing how it diverges so heavily from the source material.
Castle In the Sky is the Definition of a Fun Adventure Film. It’s just so magical
Castle in the Sky feels like the inspiration for every 90's JRPG.
Agreed
It’s just so good. Easily the best one in my opinion, and one of the most beautiful movie soundtracks ever made.
It's my favourite ghibli movie when it comes to the raw vibes I get from it
I thought I was the only one that had Castle in the Sky as their favorite 🥲
You’re pretty wrong or whatever
Yep. *insert generic insult about ProZD being an ass, or stupid, whatever we are supposed to do these days*
him having his own opinions, whatever the reasons, makes me so angry!!

8:26 I love the idea of someone going into a movie being all like "Aw yeah, little people!"
Hahaha, awww yeah. Can't wait for Murakami's IQ84 to be made into a movie.
Earwig and the Witch feels like the old Disney Direct to Video "sequels" that feels like it was a concept of an aborted tv pitch.
Man that's a really good analogy. I personally enjoyed watching it (possibly unpopular opinion but I thought Earwig herself was a very likeable protagonist) but it very much left me going "What?? That's it?" by the end.
@@r.a.m1453 I also enjoyed it then the moment I thought we were halfway through the movie it's over?? It felt like it was cut in half lol

Had the same reaction lol
COULDNT AGREE MORE, WHAT A MARVELOUS TIER LIST
And it went there IMMEDIATELY
I mean, I have no ill to say of a movie that includes the line "Better a pig than a fascist."
I came in with guns ready to blast but all I could do was applaud in awe. Objectively correct tier list. The rest didn't even need to be ranked.
WHISPER OF THE HEART RESPECT LETS GO THATS MY GOAT MOVIE
did you watch the schafrillas productions video?
Schafrallias made me watch woth for the first time this year. I’ve watched it 50 times since. Easy S+++++ tier
It's one of my rainy day afternoon movies. Such a cozy film.
It's the next Ghibli Movie I'm going to watch next for sure. ❤
@@dogymacdogface.478idk that guys voice or at least the way he talks kind of annoys me. What did he say about it?
The opening 20 mins of Nausicaa is superb.
My biggest gripe is that the animation is somewhat dated. I’d love a reworked animated movie with todays tech.
@@templetonbob Dated as in it just looks old or do you have issues with the animation?
@@nicolasroy8481 You can tell it wasn’t given as much detail or resources compared to other later Ghibli films. It’s just not as fleshed out and looks less fluid and choppy by comparison. I think if it released when the studio had a larger budget to work with it would have been significantly improved. I wouldn’t change the art style at all.
The ending is even better. Having it this low is flat-put disrespectful
@@templetonbobI'm pretty sure naussica pre dates studio ghibli tho it is claimed by ghibli
Need you on a Porco Rosso fan dub
I'd give my spending money to hear Sungwon say
"Please forgive us who are deep in sin for using women's hands to make a fighter plane."
Castle in the Sky is a movie that nobody ever watches twice for some reason. Personally I think it might have the best value on re-watch. It's a really cool fantasy film.
I liked Castle In The Sky, but I can barely remember anything about it.
it's ironic, Castle in the Sky was one of those movies I was always coming back to as a kid, dozens of times 😂
And it’s another one of the films that is 100% better in Japanese. Maybe he thinks less of it having only seen the dub? Otherwise, agree with almost all of his list. I would have ranked Mononoke as an S, but that’s me.
@@katieeshaw What makes it better in Japanese?
I've seen it so many times
I read the title as "ALL THE STUPID GHIBLI MOVIES" and I was like "oh damn we're getting SPICY today"
XD
I think the wind rises gets a lot better when you look at it as like a harsh criticism of the main guy and his way of thinking. like it’s all from his pov and shows how he justifies his actions and ignores the morality of the things he’s doing. the way I see it is like it’s only the color scenes of oppenheimer
Also it's more impactful in how Miyazaki relates to the main guy
He is a scientist. The movie offers an insight into the world of a boy/man who loves what he does... and for that, this is all we get to judge him on - his work and love for it. It's my favourite movie :-)
I don't think the movie WAS a harsh criticism though. You can think about it that way, but that did not feel like the intent. I think you put it right, "only the color scenes from Oppenheimer". In which case, you probably need that other view, something to ground the audience.
Was pretty upset you put Grave of the Fireflies at a B, but after thinking it over it does make a whole lot of sense. It is my favorite Ghibli movie that I never want to watch again.
I think that’s completely and objectively wrong. If you think a movie is great but a hard watch, I think that should NEVER mean you bring it down a tier because of it. It’s a war movie. It’s not supposed to be an easy watch. So why are you judging it like it should be something it’s not and never claimed to be?
@@meee_5155the way the comment was structured made it sound like a joke.
@@meee_5155 that makes sense if the tierlist was purely about how objectively good the movie is, but treating it as a general likeability of the movie it's perfectly ok to pull it down because it's not fun to watch
Exactly. It belongs in A quality-wise, but because it's so damn painful (even outright scarring for some) to watch, you gotta put it below your personal A's.
He's not grading them based off of if he thinks it's a good movie. It's just purely his feeling towards it and how much it means to him.
I think we should be able to give this to him without any hurt feelings. It's different if he thought it was worse than the others but he definitely is not saying that about any of these.
We shouldn't be going into this looking for when we agree with him. This is just him talking about himself and his tastes.
The biggest problem that I have with Kiki's is that it just _ends._ It's a lovely little lighthearted tale, but just when it feels like it's getting off the ground, the credits start to roll. It's so abrupt its almost jarring.
Watched Kiki's for the first time about a month ago and that was probably my only critique. I wanted to see so much more of Kiki after the climactic scenes, but instead I'm quickly ushered out to the credits. A lovely film nonetheless.
Check out the book! It's even more low stakes and whimsical. And the ending was much more satisfying
Also its meant for children so it's an easy read
I really didn't fell that way. i think Kiki is the better version of Spirited Away... both are about young girls learning to grow up and become more self-assured, but Kiki is so much more of a positive movie. If I had a daughter, Kiki would be the one that I would want to watch with. Or as somebody once said, "It's the Ghibli movie about burnout" lol.
Ah, but don't the best leave us craving more in a good way? 😊
That happens with most Ghibli movies. They rarely end, they just stop abruptly.
That feeling of mystery and burgeoning adventure as Chihiro stands by the portal at the beginning of Spirited Away, with the soft piano score in the background... That feeling of pure magic and fantasy around you. That's why I watch movies, and that's why Spirited Away is number 1, always. It transports you mind, body and soul and I love that for it.
Nausicaa is my favorite and im absolutely crushed you did C
The disrespect!! Nausicaa is my fave too, it’s cruelly underrated
@@geealion @marbledryes the issue is it horribly butchered the original manga plot. was originally a 4 volume series where 90% does not take place in the valley. Since the whole movie took place in the valley, you can see how they changed the plot
@@heartfangNausicaa is my favorite adaptation because Miyazaki looked at his manga and said "I can't put all of this in 1.5 hours of movie" and then went and made a new story that held a lot of the same themes in a tighter but still powerful story. The manga is absolutely banger and it's a shame we'll never get an adaptation that is 1 to 1, but Miyazaki knew what he was doing with the movie
@heartfang @UndergroundGod13 Interesting! I’ll have to check out the manga and see
@@UndergroundGod13 i think too much was cut sadly. then again, nausicaa was one of my first manga ever so I might be biased
I loved The Wind Rises so much. Like Oppenheimer, it's the story of a genius who goes to whatever lengths it takes to have their dream/passion become a reality, not thinking about the consequences it brings. Appreciate your takes, though, I always enjoy seeing how people approach and critique films.
The wind rises is by far my favorite! It hurt a lot when he put it in D not gonna ngl
I mean what hurt me more was that it’s so LOW! Like not even a high C?! My poor heart
What the hell?
@@jasonmp85What?
@@TheShanicpower whether the film or Modern Prometheus, what the OP wrote about Oppenheimer is completely out of step with the portrayed events, and history.
Oppenheimer didn’t have a dream to make a bomb… it doesn’t show him doodling his bomb ideas on napkins because he’s just _so excited_ about his ideas. And everyone involved knew _exactly_ the devastation it would cause.
The wind rises is bad, and the OP eating the crap lie that “oh the Zero designer is just misunderstood” is bad, but to extend that framing to Oppenheimer is *wild*.
That film is a stain on the entire legacy of Miyazaki.
Top 4 for me personally are Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and Nausicaa. There's just something magical and beautiful about all of them. I have a soft spot for The Wind Rises. It's very much the tale of a genius who wants to pursue his passion, but the government gets in the way and he's forced to do something he both does and does not want to do. He wants to build planes, that's his dream, his passion, and he wants to build them better than anyone. Government contracts keep the business afloat are an unavoidable evil of many professions. The vibe I got was that he doesn't like that his planes are intended for military use, and mourns that many of them will never return for various reasons. He got to achieve his dream of making great planes, the Zero is his legacy, but it came at the cost of his innocence. Even the man he idolized was forced to take his beautiful civilian planes and make machines of war because the money keeps the lights on and allows him to pursue his real dream of non-military craft. I recall the movie being very polarizing in Japan because they try to sort of bury a lot of bad things they did during WWII or things they perceive to be bad, and Jiro Horikoshi, as the inventor of the infamous Zero, was turned into one of these social pariahs. Even his children wanted nothing to do with his legacy.
The Castle of Cagliostro is my favorite Miyazaki film (and probably my favorite animated film of all time), but my favorite Studio Ghibli film is a three-way tie between Castle in the Sky, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Princess Kaguya
WHISPER OF THE HEART IS MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE MOVIE❤
It's so good.
Just here to recommend people to read the Tales from Earthsea books. It's actually really good and the movie doesn't do it justice.
Yeah his "this feels like someone got the wrong cliffnotes" is entirely true lol
It’s a shame the author said they really didn’t want their book to be adapted but when she saw other studio ghibli films she had faith they could adapt her worth faithfully. Idk why myazaki gave the job to his son since he’s a fan of the books though. I feel bad that the author didn’t want her work mis-adapted but had faith in myazaki only for him not to actually be the one fully producing/directing it.
dude the wind rises is franky's back story.
Legit just rewatched water 7. god he might be my favourite
Thank you for mentioning Lupin III Castle of Cagliostro!! It's also a favorite of mine, it's so much fun
Castle in the Sky is my current favorite. What you said about Porco Rosso are the same reasons why I love it so much. The Romance of it, with a capital R. It reminded me of everything I love about One Piece, which is funny because Mayumi Tanaka voices the protagonist in Japanese.
Reading Ursula LeGuin’s comments about the process of getting Earthsea made caused me to lose some respect for Ghibli. I’d rate it F- just for that.
I think I only saw the Wikipedia text about that. Anything in particular you remember about that?
@@NFM1337 I tried to link to her write-up on it but it seems to have disappeared... If you go to her site (so glad it's still up!) there's a section on adaptations and it has her commentary on the process of getting it made as well as her reaction to seeing it. She never got a good adaptation of Earthsea made and it really makes me sad.
@@NFM1337 she basically never let people adapt her work and made an exception for ghibli in consideration of miyazaki’s talents, then ghibli handed the movie to miyazaki’s inexperienced son and lied about hayao supervising it, and the result was a bad adaptation
Genuinely would trade Howl's for a crack at a well directed Earthsea adaptation, I love those books sm 🥲
Yeah it’s a shame. I felt bad for her. Really hope she gets another shot at a good adaptation kind of like how Percy Jackson’s did.
Princess Mononoke is my favorite movie (period, not just Ghibli) but i think Spirited Away is their best film. Fantastic movie that is hard to find people who dont love it. Castle in The Sky is such a fun romp with a great mix of child wonder and endangerment
I feel the same way about Mononoke and Spirited Away. Mononoke is my favorite, and I think Spirited Away is probably their best film.
Agreed! Those are, for my money, the two greatest animated movies ever.
I feel bad for Goro Miyazaki. He wasn't ready to continue his father's legacy. He only had one successful movie out of 3. His directional debut was a flop, and his recent one really bombed. From up on Poppy Hill was the only one that saved his ass. I hope he can get more classes on filmmaking
He wasn't really that young either, so will he ever be ready...
I know. I still feel bad for him regardless. He tried so hard, but it didn't work. I can only imagine how he's feeling. I personally enjoyed Tales from Earthsea and Earwig and the Witch. Sure, they were bad, but I still gave them a shot.
Watch the documentary about Hayao Miyazaki, and you'll see his demeanor toward his son used to be very toxic. Goro Miyazaki was set up to be the successor, a continuation of Ghibli excellence, and that expectation was just way too high. Honestly, I think Hayao Miyazaki is a once in a generational talent, and from what we've seen in the boy and the heron, he's made peace with not continuing Ghibli (at least in his way)
Howl mentioned, it’s my duty to recommend you all read the book and its sequels; Castle in the Sky & House of Many Ways
House of Many Ways is so good! Castle in the Air is fine enough (also very funny in this context that it's completely unrelated to Castle in the Sky), but I don't see myself ever rereading it like I likely will with both Howl and House of Many Ways.
Yes yes yes!!
thks for the advice, hated the movie (interesting world, amazing graphics, even for today)
Always happy to see love for Kiki :) Whisper of the Heart was a surprise! It's my other favourite Ghibli film, but I think a lot of folks find it boring. And there were a few on here I haven't seen yet! I'll have to seek some of them out.
Whisper and Kiki are both so good.
Definitely think you should rewatch Marnie. I think the twist can be pretty detrimental, especially if you have other expectations. A second watch knowing what to expect definitely can make the film more enjoyable.
The only reason I accept your placement of Nausicaa is you read the manga.
By sheer coincidence I rewatched it like a week ago for the first time since it came out; it's not nearly as bad as I remembered. It's beautifully animated and I _really_ relate to the main character. The twist in the story is definitely strange, but the pacing is what really keeps it from flying; the first 2/3rds are really crisp and engaging and then the last 1/3rd becomes disjointed and a little expository. It's still definitely worth a watch and doesn't deserve to be in the same tier as Earthsea :/
Did the twist really catch so many people off-guard? I spent the middle third constantly guessing and revising my guesses on what the reveal was going to be, because it was plain as day there was going to be *something*, and I was relatively close with my final guess. Were people just taking all the events as they happened at face-value?
@@Daniel-qt5ib Personally, I am not someone who guesses what's going to happen while watching a movie, I take in the movie as it goes along.
@@Daniel-qt5ibi just thought they were gay
Yeah the first time I watched Marnie, I wasn’t paying a ton of attention so when the twist came at the end I was just confused and didn’t really enjoy the movie. But I recently rewatched it in theaters with no distractions and it’s probably one of my favorites now
I was absolutely surprised by Marnie. Loved it and went through a pretty wide array of emotions while watching it. Interesting story and decent mystery of trying to figure out what was really going on
I loved it too. I think I may have gotten more out of it emotionally at this point in my life than others. Lost my mom a few years back and now I was watching it with my daughter that she never got to meet, so the family aspect really landed.
I really loved it. Given this tier list, I think it would get a “C” at least on a rewatch. It’s the kind of movie that only gets better when you see it again.
the tale of princess kaguya in B tier should be considered high treason
Kaguya is high art; if there is one movie that completely transcends the rest of Ghibli, this is it. But it's not the most accessible movie so I can understand why it doesn't make the top of the list. I think it deserves an honorable mention, artistically its the greatest achievement out of all of them.
THANK YOU I completely agree
Castle in the sky and princess kaguya are my top 2 😢
Time to get all the popcorn
as ive aged only yesterday has become my favorite anime film of all time dont know how to explain it must it hits me emotionally
Some of these films genuinely are made for different stages of life. I'm very interested in what my thoughts on The Boy and the Heron will be in 40 years.

Thank you for no Ponyo slander 🤗
the biggest disagreement I have is that I would put Princess Kaguya in S tier, I love the story of a princess who values freedom over material wealth. the animation is also really unique and incredibly beautiful and elegant to me. I understand that some might find the story esoteric but it speaks to me very deeply.
I didn't realize it was possible to put Castle in the Sky ahead of Nausicaa but here we are
3:10 thank god! If you hadn't ranked Kiki that high, I would've been livid. Not that that means anything
Oh you're gonna LOVE my neighbors the yamadas on rewatch
I really love that you were honest with it and it's fun to see where (and how) you depart from the common consensus. I aspire to one day have watched them all as well!
Castle in the sky is what I love about skypia as setting in the beautiful way only Ghibli is able to show
Spirited Away is the greatest for me, not even greatest Ghibli film but possibly one of the greatest films ever to exist.
I love spirited away… I have fond memories of Totoro too but rewatching it it’s definitely more of a kids movie than it is an actually interesting story. I love both though, they’re so nostalgic for me :,)
Arrietty for me
@@weedlechu Many of the Ghibli films are truly amazing! I think Totoro being primarily for a children’s audience makes it special for the many adults that do watch it. Like Miyazaki said, he had two audiences in mind for this film. First children, so they can learn to enjoy and play outside in nature, and second adults, so they can reminisce their childhood memories and lives. What makes a lot of older audiences love Totoro, is that it gets them to escape from their frustrating and tiresome lives, where they can feel free and joyful; a feeling that they haven’t felt in very long time.
I liked the movie and spent a fair amount of time pondering over its intricacies but I didn't find it that amazing tbh
@@DOXO881 Ponder more I guess, cuz you're wrong
man, I absolutely adored The Wind Rises and it's one of my favourite animated movies of all time...
Caproni: Did you enjoy making your planes, little Japanese boy?
Jiro: Yes, but none of them survived
Caproni: That's what happens when you lose a war.
Same here! Probably his most hurtful placing to me haha
Definitely my favorite, along with spirited away
and youre right to do so, its a great piece of art, no need to take op's list seriously
Same. Idk this might be just me but I found it to be one of the more emotional films he made.
Porco Rosso at S I don't even need to see the rest of this video this list is already peak
It does get more nonsensical after that, so good call.
As a big fan of Nausicaa, I am fully aware that a lot of my enjoyment comes from wearing a pair of thick nostalgia goggles. Also, an immense improvement over Warriors of the Wind which I'd originally watched.
As a staunch Poppy Hill enjoyer I’m happy to hear anyone else say nice things about it
Do I agree, not completely, it's actually pretty solid. Admittedly Only Yesterday is my fave Ghibli movie so you won me over by giving it praise.
What timing! I'm in the middle of rewatching a lot of these right now (just Miyazaki's films atm). Just finished Princess Mononoke last night. It's been really interesting to see the progression of Miyazaki's stories starting from Nausicaa. Jumping from fantasy adventure to slice-of-life and back again. I'm going in order of release date, so I haven't gotten to Wind Rises or Marnie yet, but so far each movie has been enjoyable in its own way. My top 3 have always been Howl, Spirited Away and Kiki, but honestly your rankings are all pretty fair for the ones I've seen. Really liked hearing your opinions ^^
I strongly suspect _Castle in the Sky_ would go up a tier with a rewatch.
My immediate thought! He said it's been a long time since he's seen it...time to rewatch!!! My absolute favorite
Only Yesterday is incredible: definitely a gem, and feels distinctly apart from all the Miyazaki directed stuff in the Ghibli catalog. One of my favorite Ghibli movies, it grew on me; I found myself not able to stop thinking about it after the credits.
Oooh a tier list with a proper distribution!
Of course evrything is personnal enjoyment but man, I saw castle in the sky when I was a kid and it made me dream like no other before and long after it.
And it held on pretty well growing up.
The Cat Returns is my favourite. It's just such a feel-good coming-of-age story, great voice acting, great characters. Tim Curry as the Cat King is a gem. Ciao babe...
I love it so much when a stranger on the Internet makes a video which validates some of my opinions
Porco Rosso in S Tier? This guy seems alright...
It’s funny because I can see him voicing Marco. I think he’s got the voice for it.
My respect for him knows no bounds now. Porco is goated.
That alone is why I can't be mad at this list.
My list would be very different, but that's oke because different tastes and opinions are important! Thanks for sharing your list ProZD!
Felt the exact same way about Tales from Earthsea, it felt like I was supposed to have already known what was going on but since I didn’t read the books I obviously did not so it made zero sense

He's comparing them to each other though, not all movies.
I just need to watch where you place the Boy n the Heron. (C tier valid af)
I thought it was an absolute B- film when I saw it in theaters. It was very confusing and strange at times
That film is polarizing. It's more of an insight to Miyazaki's thoughts about himself. Very self referential. If you need the story to make sense on its own, it doesn't deliver. For me though, high A bordering S tier
@@Crytaljamagreed, I thought Miyazaki used a world war story to show us his thoughts about the world. I loved it, but my friend didn’t because it didn’t make any sense to him
the history behind it is very interesting... if you don't go in with a deep understanding of where the film is coming from it feels like a jumble of colors and noise. after watching the movie the first time I was confused, and then tried to look into some of the recurring symbols & ideas throughout the movie and on a rewatch, it is one of my favorites. thinking about writing a review
@@nicholasmitchell6025 link the review if you write it! I feel it was a very optimistic viewpoint on shaping the world and figuring out how to navigate it. Felt like a dream to me, in all senses of the word. Like what it communicated was something that needed to be understood and not explained.
Odd because I heard Miyazaki is supposed to think the world is mostly shit.
As somebody who never watched any anime at all before last year, watching all the Ghibli movies (plus Lupin) was honestly one of the coolest experiences of my life. The only one I disliked at all was Howl’s Moving Castle because I couldn’t really follow it. I did skip out on Earthsea, Earwig and Ocean Waves though since they have the worst ratings, but I will definitely watch them soon.
My three personal favorites are Nausicäa (brilliant ending with a musical nod to one of my favorite composers), When Marnie Was There (the only Ghibli film to make me cry), and Porco Rosso. You can probably already tell what kind of person I am from those picks.
I never get mad at your opinions bc we always just happen to have the exact same opinions so thank you for that

the Nausicaa manga is so good, one of my favorite works of art. love hearing it mentioned and recommended as better than the movie
i really enjoy watching these and would love to see more :3
I feel so relieved by your placement of The Wind Rises. Like, sometimes I really feel crazy because that movie is pretty much universally praised as far as I can tell, but I genuinely felt it was painfully dull and uninspired.
The credits of EATW is more interesting than the movie. That's so funny i was thinking the same thing 😂

Amazing content as always king 👌 keep it up bro 💜
"Porco Rosso" is an absolute masterpiece. My favorite for sure.
all the gibli movies are so whimsical and moving in their own ways. love the animation style, plots, characters, all of it 🧡
I think the best thing about studio ghibli is that when they made earwig and the witch is that when they received the negative backlash they went like "oh shit we went wrong here" and right after made another animated movie that was good
THANK YOU for properly appreciating Only Yesterday. It's one of my favorite Ghibli films and it always makes me sad when people immediately dismiss it because there isn't any action. It gets called boring by so many people who aren't even the target audience anyway. I adore the way it's animated and the way the countryside is depicted. I LOVE the music. And the way the flashbacks tie into the main storyline is so charming and thoughtful.
Damn I LOVE the wind rises, but it's your list.
It was the only movie where I actively disagreed with the protagonist/message.
Then again, I guess I don't have that one thing I'm so passionate about I'm willing to risk the health and wellbeing of the woman I love for it.
It's a movie about planes built by Korean slaves, and Prozd is of Korean descent. Honestly I don't blame him.
I think this is the most valid reason to dislike it. The glossing over the damage of WWII felt very off to me coming from Miyazaki
@@graffitisamurai i dont think you're supposed to agree with the protagonist. the message of the film doesnt support him. there's a lot of parallels to oppenheimer in both his story and character here: where theres this grey morality in what he did, being so blinded by the love of creating planes/science, and the need to fight for your country (as you gotta see it from their perspectives of the time) that the future consequences elude them until after they happened. with jiro, there probably was never going to be another moment in his life to create planes, and if he didnt here, then someone wouldve instead. its tragic in many ways that he had to have been born in this time period, neither being painted as a hero or a villain, just a victim of war and obsession, which to me makes the film very sad and poignant. aircraft will sadly always be used for violence, yet why should that deter people from their genuinely aspirations and dreams with designing them, even if they dont want them to be used that way? people were also struggling naturally to the war, so taking this path was also a better way financially. ive read somewhere before that the film is a reflection on miyazaki's own life and mistakes, which makes it all the more depressing. beautiful film, but one where first viewing doesnt do it justice (i found it boring on first watch)
@@astelevey THANK YOU! Christ, you’d think people would actually watch the film rather than assume the worst
The Red Turtle? You just made that one up to mess with us.
I had to google it. I can’t believe it’s real
I’m finishing up my Ghibli binge-watch and so far my top 5 is:
1. The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (probably my favorite animated film ever)
2. Princess Mononoke
3. Spirited Away
4. Grave of the Fireflies
5. My Neighbor Totoro
i haven't watched very many studio ghibli films but the ones you talked about, i pretty much agree with. your taste rarely does me wrong 💖
Howls moving castle b tier? oh no
Grave of the fireflies not being in S is crazy. That is hands down the best for me
Finally a tier list video I can get behind!
Can’t wait to hear your voice in a Ghibli film someday.
Nausicaa manga is S tier. Nausicaa movie is lower tier for sure. Don't feel bad. So much from the manga was missing
Waiting with baited breath to see your take but alas, Earwigbros are NOT eating tonight. IDK why but there was something about that movie that really captured my imagination and I loved.
Did you enjoy earwig and the witch.
@@channingbloom7125 Yeah, I loved the animation style and thought the whole story was super cute. I don't disagree with the common criticisms of the story, but I think that the movie itself is a bit underrated. For what it is, I think it did a good job, even if it *could* have been better if it had a different focus.
I enjoyed earwig much more than I expected. My family like it. I wish it were longer and had a different like you said
My cats are named Kiki and Jiji because of the movie so thank you for putting it in S tier 😅
We clearly have different styles, but mad respect for your well thought out analysis of each video. We don't have to agree but I appreciate you really getting into what you like about each one. Good one, mate.
Kaguya belongs in S tier. I don't think it's my personal favorite Ghibli movie, but the artistry, heartbreaking emotion, beauty, and humanity on display in that film elevate into the very top heights of Studio Ghibli's work.
pedantic "um aCtUaLlY" moment incoming lol but nausicaa _technically_ isn't a ghibli movie... while it's a miyazaki film produced by takahata with music by joe hisaishi, it was released the year before studio ghibli was founded. still, it's basically an honorary ghibli film/ proto-ghibli film so i still think it makes sense to include it.
I really liked ponyo's fluff, and my neighbor totoro was good too, but whisper of the heart and kiki's delivery service both bored me to death. I'm not sure exactly what separates them, or why I liked some over the others. I guess it's just execution.
Yo ProZD congrats on your role in Delicious in Dungeon. You killed it man!
The worst Ghibli movie is still better than most other movies...
... which doesn't mean absolutely anything
I could write an essay on why Marnie is the best movie of all time but I think it only hits if you're introverted so when someone says they didn't like it I just assume they didn't get it, so not much of a point in explaining it.
introvert here! i think you need a melancholic mentality to vibe with the movie. its my favorite ghibli movie (top3 are marnie, kiki, and howl) and i LOVE it, but yeah i get why others dont. still thought D is harsh xD
introvert who relates to the main character to the point it hurts here, i didn't like it because the twist was lame as hell. hope it helps
I'm not an introvert at all and it still really touched me. Its just so lovely and takes you through all the emotions.
Not an introvert, but Marnie is easily in my top 5 favorite Ghibli films. I was surprised by how much I loved it ❤
@@threeheadedmountaindew I could write a whole extra essay on the twist itself to be honest. It's thematically relevant and super interesting but it hits you like a truck. It's even more random-feeling in the book, actually, which I always found curious.
I can forgive every other part of this list because you correctly placed The Wind Rises near the bottom.
tbh i agree with you on grave of the fireflies. it’s an amazing film, with fantastic animation and realistic storytelling, but it’s so horribly depressing that i think most people only watch it once for the sake of their heart :’)
i definitely think there are a few films that only work in the original japanese as well, and that’s one of them, along with mononoke (in my opinion at least). i actually liked the spirited away dub, despite the heavily japanese setting, but that’s mainly bc they just rly executed it well
woow, I usually releate with your taste but on ghibli movies we differ quite a bit haha, surprising but respectable.
had a couple of jawdrops wathcing this video
