As a developer, I appreciated how you handled that call. I hope he took from it instead of being discouraged because he could truly learn a lot. Though I will say, keep in mind. Not everyone is trying to be an asshole. There's a lot to learn in this industry.
Fun fact: the map he’s playing on is from a mobile game: Modern Combat 4.

Some of it is following a free tutorial how to make a basic fps shooter for unity. There free umg widgets like blood splatter etc. That's what there using when they get shot.
Brutal dude, but needs to be done. A good clean efficient kill. The only thing I would say is seeing as he seemed to look up to you, you could have given him some advice or direction in what he should be doing rather than simply slamming him. Nonetheless, love what you're doing.

Am I the only one that kinda feels bad for the guy? I mean yeah he made some poor choices and should have made this game free to play if it was a continuation of the older games. However he did genuinely sound like he was trying to get better. I mean perhaps the reason he wanted fry to look at his game was because he looked up to fry or something? I mean im not saying im on the guys side but I do feel kinda bad for him. Criticism either breaks some people or gives them the kick they need to try and do better. It was great to have an insight to how something like this occurs. You can clearly see that the "developer" has genuine wishes for his project to be a success, but doesn't see that he has no ability whatsoever to see a quality product released. There's a sort of sadness to the whole thing, because this reminds me of musicians/artists that have absolutely no talent, but continue to dream big, ruining their lives in the process, because they just can't see that they should have moved on long ago.
I don't think he's deliberately releasing terrible products, I think he's viewing them with rose tinted glasses, accompanied by wishful thinking. Almost seeing them as what they are in his mind, but not what they actually are. Sometimes in life, you need to step back and view your life from the outside and this would definitely be that time for him. If he wants to continue to develop games as a hobbyist, I think that's fantastic, but releasing "products" is definitely not something he should continue to do, because he can't provide anything to the end consumer, no matter how much he thinks he can. It's time for him to move on.
This is the sad faith of many developers that release shit products. I can imagine it being hard for Steam to come up with a proper way to judge and curate people's work without breaking hearts and getting arguments about how this is their creative expression. At the end of the day, we pity developers who suffer from this faith, but set a foot down when they can't handle the negative backlash. At the end of the day, it's your response to the pressure that matters the most, not why or how you've been pressured.
He’s probably not inherently untalented. I don’t think there’s such thing as talent when it comes to something as complicated as making a game. He’s just not patient and is releasing projects that should exclusively exist to learn game development/ practice coding. not be sold or even released to the public.
Or put more time to it and learn how to do things better

Kinda sad, Aidan added me on steam after posting something in the community hub about the release date being pushed back mutiple times after that he gave me a free steam key. I'm not gonna lie the game was shit but for some reason he kept asking me if was going to buy the game even tho he gave me a free key, I also asked him about his past games and he told me "thats all in the past and to forget about it". I also told him about the maps looking very similar to other games and he just ignored me. I knew something was up

Yep that is me... I am a game developer working for a very small indie studio with 3 devs and one tester and we just started a few months ago and we dont have the funds to make original assets and so far we are trying to make our own assets and have made one tower asset by ourselves but that is the only thing rn. We also are not very good at coding or even modeling

To make pretty much any business venture today in any industry, you need the financial resources to get the tools and staff in order to practice and get better. It's not like it's the 1950s where you can go pick up a chainsaw or set of tools, talk to someone, show your skills and your career is set. It's not the life of a feller anymore. Those days are gone. Same as the days of horse logging. Times and situations are nothing alike anymore.

With more information including discovering this developer filed false DMCA claims to people criticizing his work, I definitely see this.
I played Flash Point and while it's better than the absolute bottom tier of Steam FPS titles, it's not really that categorically different from them. Many of the worse titles at least have horrible wave shooting modes so there's gameplay without a player base.
Definitely not sure about this developer's intentions, but self-reflection and rebuilding integrity definitely aren't high on the list.
He definitely cried for a couple hours after that phone call.

I recently talked to a 17 year old dev about a 5 year old project on Steam. It was released 5 years ago, making him 12 when he released the quite awful game to Steam.
It wouldn't shock me if this developer is still in high school today.
I respect him for coming on, at least. I think it's just a little guy who didn't realize the road he had ahead of him. He made some shitty mistakes, but I hope he learned something from that.
He gotta realize the multiplayer FPS industry is really hard to compete in, even great games like Insurgency Sandstorm struggle to get a player base nowadays. I think he should focus on small rpgs or platformers with a good art style, it would have way more potential to sell and make yourself known in a good way. Don't put flashpoint on the steam market, take what you learned from it and keep grinding, try to develop your own style. And get out of that tunnel vision, be honest with yourself, stop trying to fool people.
I see that you have put the speech the best way you can, and I do respect the support of the dev. Hope he can succeeds one day and makes at least a small game but a fun one at least if that's possible from him. He just needs to be honest with himself and to everyone as well. Hopefully he learns and does something really good in return

Peaquad I agree. I’m a game design student myself and I want to create games to sell. It’s not easy. That said, I personally would not release a game of this quality. 5 months isn’t long enough for two people working in their free time.
As a game design student, I'm torn on my project. I'm not the best 3D modeler or animator so I'm using or planning to use a lot of assets from the Unity Store. Because of that, I don't want to put a price tag on it in a year or so or whenever I finish it. I basically just want to use it as a prototype for some of my game mode and sandbox ideas so I just want feedback. But by the time I finish it, a little extra income from like a $5 price tag would be extremely beneficial for helping with college and preparing to move, most likely out of state for a game design job.
No matter what, I definitely will never release this project if it's in any state close to any of this guy's projects, or most of the shitty early access games Fry covers for that matter. My target quality goal is around where Ravenfield was at when it first came out. That game really set the stage for what a solo indie dev can do building a game from the ground up using only his own assets.
I would think that he's only spent two months or so on this game. He's using a lot of downloaded assets, maps are beyond simple, lighting is awful, animations are extremely basic, I mean, I put around 50 hours in the first two weeks into my project (haven't had the time to work on it the past couple weeks), and really the only difference between the state of my game in its current version and Flash Point is that FP has better assets, prototype maps, menus, rounds, and a few other small but easy to implement features like kill feeds.
I have a few update vids on my game. It's still at a white box state, but I mean, it's really only a month or so away from being at the same state that FP is in if I had the time. Hopefully I can find some time soon to start working on it again.
No. He's trying to make a quick buck by using practices that are frowned upon. If he were a student trying to improve his craft, he wouldn't be trying to push his games onto Steam using shady tactics.

I am a 2D indie developper who has some experience with 3D, and I swear I can make that game in less then a month and make it look 10 times better. what is wrong with these people they are ruining the indie Genre.
Steam allows literal children to publish almost anything with an executable file on Steam and charge a price for it.
Available tools are also much easier to make a project that compiles and does something than the old days, too.
It's a real shame that so many interesting projects get buried on Steam.

I'm not against it completely if the assets are used to help build up or create something new but its literally just copy pasting from game to game the same BS. Best current example is the far cry 5 -to- New Dawn scheme.

I’m kinda torn. On one hand he doesn’t sound like a genuinely bad person trying to take advantage of people, just delusional. On the other hand there is all the stuff that Bigfry showed and the switching of studios, closing up shop when one doesn’t work out, etc. If he came on the call and was defensive and didn’t sound so goddamn defeated, I would have been like fuck this guy. The tone of his voice made me lean towards delusional. Maybe the harsh criticism will either push him to get his business practice right, get better at making games, or find a new hobby (that he isn’t charging people for).

I really think Fry got it wrong, I don't think this guy is malicious in any way. I think he's trying but he just isn't very good yet, and maybe he doesn't know how to handle some situations. The real mistake he made was trying to sell the project on steam for money instead of a hobbyist platform. In fact, while watching the interview Fry seemed like the malicious one honestly. Not saying he meant to be, but it sure seemed like he was.
I feel very bad for him. He is new to making a game, and really cared about his game, and probably was so happy on the work he did. But he kinda deserved it. (Also is this the guy who made The Wall, cause that game is pretty good)
I mean... to be real, you can’t really expect one or two people to make a game from scratch and expect a decent game especially from a beginner dev. Sure I agree trying to charge people money for the game is a little bit shady, but everyone in any field starts somewhere and usually have ugly beginnings. I have multiple feelings about this:
first of all, I feel bad for him. Though, he deserved it!
you shouldn't lie, even though a game actually takes a lot of work and effort, you really get a bond with your game if you see what I mean.
Of course, you don't make a perfect game with a small team and they remain indie games. but if you look at SteelRaven7 that made my favorite game ever (Ravenfield) which is getting constant updates and he is expanding the moddability of the game at the same time! Not to mention he staying in contact with the community and actually don't lie to them. So what I am trying to say is, make an original and unique game as well as not scamming your customers makes you much better of a developer!
a bit tough on the guy but yea, steam does need to weed through their library BIGTIME and stop allowing complete shit trash games to be released... This game is shitty looking but there are SO many worse ones out there even,pure shit, I remember back when i could click the new releases button on steam and see a list of good solid games to choose from,nowadays you get THOUSANDS of total CRAP titles with good ones mixed in and hard to find.... Steam needs a much better screening process for these thousands of shitty games cluttering up what was once the perfect online video game store...

It’s a shame how indie games that have less dev members, less money, and probably not even a office building, are better games than AAA games that have everything. I just wish the majority would quit playing AAA and play indies to make AAA open their eyes and not their wallets

There are some great AAA games, but many of the franchises that used to be good (Halo, COD, BF) are now falling apart or already have. It’s sad. I’m honestly not even counting the days for games anymore like I used to because I know they are going to fail. Halo Infinite should hype me up, but I don’t want to be fucked by 343 again
