It’s also worth noting that when you buy the solid woods, they tend to “open up” more as you play it more over the years. So I 100% recommend at least starting out with an acoustic guitar that has a solid top.
When my son was 9 I spent $1200 on a really nice, very playable used Charvel guitar and 50w Soldano amp with 2x12 cab. I know that's not acoustic but the principle is the same. Because the gear was not holding him back due to its shittyness, he got really good, was able to then play and meet lots of people and 10 years later got a deal with a major label with a $250K advance. Good guitars and equipment help a player develop, and if they decide not to play its easy to get rid off. Shitty guitars hold the new player back and are impossible to get rid of if you need to. Get the best you can afford. Do not buy into the "buy crap until you prove you're serious" bullshit. Invest in creativity. Period.
I agree. Law of diminishing returns and resell prices on lower end guitars and gear is bad. Higher end well taken care of stuff holds value longer and not as bad diminished value. I say save up for a few months at get to that 400$ price area where taylor and Martin make great guitars. Sire is a great brand for 300$. And even buying used as your first guitar is great. A 400$ guitar new would be around 250 used. Thats a great deal. And it usually includes a case. Buy quality once and be happy. I'm with ya on that
While I agree that one shouldn't buy crap diminishing returns and resell prices have nothing in common with actual playing an instrument. Crap doesn't mean low or high pricetag either, crap can be found in all priceranges.
wish my parents were partly as you are. I ended buying my first guitar at 34 years old, as my parents was hugely against me playing guitar. have no idead why up to this day ...
Nonsense. You don't need to spend anywhere near that money to get a playable guitar, that will stay in tune, and last. It seems you're just trying to take some credit for his talent and hard work, by putting some of it down to the equipment you bought. Encouragement and discipline (which I'm sure you gave) would have done infinitely more to get him to the point he's at. If your Son wasn't going to learn what he learned on a £250 and £100 amp, he wasn't going to learn it at all. It's not something like skydiving, where your life as at risk, and buying on a budget is dangerous. Price doesn't equate to quality, either, and it's quality you're looking for, not just a flash badge on the headstock. I think having the best equipment can actually damage, or kill creativity, like the more pedals you add to the effect board, the less techniques you have to learn with your hands.
My first acoustic was an Alvarez AD60 and I've played it for over 10 years, over 500 shows and I only quit playing it because I got a great deal on a fancy Taylor. It NEVER let me down and still plays great to this day!
I just love when the Captain, and Pete jam. Captain Lee is becoming a really fantastic guitarist. Not that he wasn't already really good, but what a privilege it is to see his progress over time. Now I just need the Captain to teach classes online. I feel like he would be great to learn from.
I bought a Yamaha FG (nylon strings) for 400$ AUD and i've been playing every day now for 3 months. I'm looking at an upgrade to a steel string come xmas/boxing day sales! Best decision i ever made. I'd rather have something I'm happy with that sounds great asit keeps inspiring me to play. Cheers!
that guitar swap at 14:11, the affortable Fender for a second had like a 12-string feel to it. I think as long as you like the sound and the tone, everything suits you :) great content!
The thing with the more expensive guitar when you go quieter, it sounds fuller when you just tickle it like that, it gets amplified a bit more. While on the cheaper on it's more faint. - It's fine in general, but if you want a fuller sound in a bigger range, you'll need something more solid.
Spend enough to get nice tone, solid tuning, nice action for playability. I spent $300 on a nice Ibanez in 1980, and I still have it and it still sounds fantastic. That was not particularly cheap back then.
I bought one of the cheap ones Lee is playing over the summer after always playing electric. Got to say its fantastic for casual acoustic playing. It stays in tune fantastically and for the price the sound is really good.
My first guitar was an accustic Spencer that I picked up from a pawn shop for $20 bucks and it was a good learner guitar until I traded it for a $800 Dean accustic with a built in tuner last year and I love my Dean it's best idea trading it and I'm glad I did
It can end up being a vicious circle; it is difficult to fully appreciate a good guitar until you can play, but a poor guitar which is a struggle to play will hold you back and prevent you from realizing your potential. I finally bought myself a decent guitar for my 40th which was a Lowden 032c. That changed my playing for the better, leaps and bounds. Ten years later I got Tom Waghorn to build me a 000, a fantastic guitar which is now ten years old and feels like a friend.
Hidden gem in the acoustic world are the Epiphone Masterbilt Series. I have a DR500MCE, all solid woods (mind you, no fancy woods). Made in Indonesia, plays and sounds stunning! Picked it up for less than $600 USD 6 years ago. Then again, I just sold an Ibanez V70 that also played beautifully, and picked it up for a little bit of nothing.
just bought all Mahogany Bristol for $250 US. shipped 1200 miles and I tuned 2 strings and played it. good projection, warm, playable, sustains, beautiful. the down side, 20-30 hours play time and the strings are going south. Mahogany is great tonewood, but old strings lose projection is more pronounced. so I will change strings more often, but I will tolerate since I love the warm tone. compromise is okay. Ü ♫
I used to play, practise and write songs on my flatmate's Eko Ranger 6, even though my 68 Les Paul was sitting right next to it. I wouldn't say the same about my first-ever guitar, from the Embassy coupons catalogue. Did I REALLY sell that to someone??? Poor sod.
@8:30 Pete plays some "Eddie & the Cruisers", albeit by accident probably. That movie wasn't very big, but it had a huge cult following. For anyone who hasn't seen it, it's a great movie.
i bought a real nice tanglewood crossroads for £100 new. Got it because my first guitar was a £60 classical tanglwood that was and still is a beauty to play. I highly recommend them! Not sure if they're only for sale in the uk or not though as they are a British company
Play nylon mostly but wanted a simple cheap steel acoustic. Found the Tanglewood crossroads series. Amazing for £150. But just found you are not a stockist! Really good option for what you are talking about.
I got a bargain on a Tanglewood about 18 months ago. Beautiful guitar, really upset that I didn't start with one like this as I can't help but think I'd be a much better player than I am now. That said, friend of mine a few days ago ordered a similar model.
If you're a beginner and you can afford it, spend about £300 - £400 on your first guitar. If you do, you'll play it happily for decades...and if you decide the guitar isn't for you, you won't have any difficulty selling it on. If you spend under £100, you'll hate it in 6 months and want an upgrade...and if you decide it's not for you, no-one wants a second hand £80 guitar.
Learning how to get the most out of a laminate-top guitar should buy you plenty of time to save up for something more fancy, that you'll be able to do justice by then. I went with an F310 (nice neck!), because though you might find better than a Yamaha, you can't go wrong with a Yamaha.
As has been noted before, what the player hears and feels is different than what the audience hears ... The Fender does quite well into a mic. AND, laminates do well for beach guitars because laminates are pretty darn stable in iffy conditions. Not pulling anything away from the higher priced units. But I do think a lot of folks should have a "camp" guitar. Don't want to take my Gretsch down to the river with a keg ... That's why we need to see Andertons more than once :)
I've just talked my cousin up from buying his teen daughter a cheap acoustic to the Alvarez AD30 which I think is an almost pro-quality instrument. Also, with the £50 saving, it's a lot of guitar for the money (£199)...
My first guitar was my father’s Fender DG-3. Had to look up how much it cost as I had no idea, and it was probably 25 years ago. Suprising to be honest as it would’ve been his monthly salary at the time or similar. No wonder it sounded better than basically everything else my friends had. The CD220SCE ash burl I bought afterwards didn’t have the same magic (what strings should I put on it? experimenting is getting expensive). My favorite acoustic I own is the Yamaha LS-TA. Damn that guitar is sweet!
I have a shitty classical guitar that I don’t use, a ibanez grg121dx and I’m getting a proper superstrat next month, after that, a les paul, an explorer and then, only then, maybe an acustic for making the clean parts on my songs a little different
I have a hankering for an acoustic. I am a pretty accomplished electric lead player though. I want one to play solo though rather than accompany singing. I usually go second hand. I was considering a Faith Venus (Love the Blood Moon) or a GS Mini (Love the Koa). What else should I consider? The PRS Angelus SE also looks quite nice
I bought one, and gave it away almost immediately. I hate that guitar. The neck is D-shaped and the tone was pretty meh. I replaced it with a used Taylor Big Baby that I got for $330.
Good video guys, there's so many affordable acoustics 'out there' these days and as Pate says, buy the one that inspires you to keep picking it up. Nothing else matters.
Pete didn't like the most expensive guitar because solid mahogany back and sides makes for a very dark sounding guitar. The middle guitar is spruce top, plywood back and sides. What they really needed was any rosewood guitar in the mix, but that's become much more expensive.
My first 'own bought' acoustic was a mid range Fender, nice to play. I have a PRS now, lovely guitar. Price makes a difference but Pete's spot on, buy something you feel like playing.
I wanted to ask something. Need a honest advice. From where to start playing guitar? Acoustic or Electric as a newbie to music? Self learning or really needs a tutor? I wanna learn playing guitar.
I'd say it depends on the type of music you want to play. Also which one do you prefer? Wanting to do something is half the battle. Electric guitars are usually easier to play because it's easier to hold down the strings.
I just checked him out from this comment as I'd never heard of him, despite his following being a whole 5% the size of Andertons. What an arrogant prick that man is. His show is boring, two men I've never heard of who aren't funny and have no chemistry and some annoying woman laughing in the background at things that aren't funny. I can't imagine why nobody has done that before?! Also having a 'news' section at the beginning...yeh there's a reason most people don't bother with that...
If someone from the comments would be kind enough to offer input: I’m thinking of getting a Bass Compressor pedal with 2 band adjustment for my 7 string cause I used heavy gauge strings and drop tune a full step on every string. Would this be the way to go or should I just buy an regular guitar compressor? Thanks in advance for input.
My first acoustic guitar was a $300 Alvarez. It sounded great, played well and served me for the next 15 years. If I’d chosen a $100 guitar (not sure if those existed 25 years ago), I probably would have had to replace it after 2-3 years, ultimately spending more money than on my one Alvarez.
No matter How Many Electric Guitars You Have You Got To Have An Acoustic Guitar, Now That Was Awesome Guys, How About 12 Strings On Your next Video, Awesome Info And Fun. 👍👍🎶🎶🎸
I opened the vid in a new tab, not looking but listening because I know there's always a jam intro... And I thought Lee's playing was actually Pete! Holy smokes
Tone comes from the fingers.......mostly. Look for the best you can afford then go up a stage. The extra expense will make you pick it up and the extra money will become evident.
I just bought my first guitar today from Andertons.....before I watched this video. I bought the Fender 115 ..just because I know Fender make good guitars. To be honest this video is not really for beginners. Buying my first guitar, I am not going to be playing it like these guys for a start. So worrying about sound & frets and type of wood and any other technical stuff shouldn't be brought to the attention of the beginner, tbh beginners won't know the difference from a £100 or £1000 guitar when they play....we will just be plinking along as a beginner . When I get to playing like these guys, hopefully I will be on £1000 guitar.
My advice is: if you can play - play whatever and you'll be fine. Otherwise buy the most expensive there is. At least you'll impress people with how rich you are.
@Michael Alamè - It's unlikely, though... Because people selling their guitar for 100 Dollars would likely need plenty of work to become actually good. - I almost always buy cheaper or used, but then proceed to find out what's wrong with it which I then need to spend money on to fix. - It would still end up being cheaper than a supposedly "great" guitar for a lot more money, but 100 Dollars. No, not realistic.
Also i'm in the States, and really want a Sire acoustic guitar. Are there any dealers in the States that have them, or should I just order through Anderton?
I bought a Taylor "Big Baby" for my first acoustic, which was a huge upgrade from my $129 starter electric guitar and had a dramatic effect on not just my playing, but my desire to play. I became more motivated, which helped me to improve, which made me more motivated... It was well worth the extra money.
I recently tried a Martin 000 at Andertons. The Pepsi challenged it with a Sigma 000. £2200 price difference. I went for the Sigma because it was great at £275 and the Martin was meh
As much as you can afford, is the answer. The more it costs, the easier it plays (usually)..... and when it's time to move it on, you'll get a better price for it. If I was a young teenager starting out today, I'd ask dad to buy me a second hand Taylor GS Mini Mahogany.
The Captain, that playing is getting better by the week.... 👌
It’s also worth noting that when you buy the solid woods, they tend to “open up” more as you play it more over the years. So I 100% recommend at least starting out with an acoustic guitar that has a solid top.

This is what supposed to be written on the entrance of every guitar shop ever built.

Sir captain, you’re killing it. The Norwegian ain’t so bad either.

The “Norwegian”... I’m sorry but I’m laughing my ass off, that’s so funny!
Thought he was from Holland?
swedish pete is clearly the best player there

I've still got my first guitar. I've had it for 49 years. An Eko Ekoette. I'd recommend andyone to get an Eko they are well made and last.
my first acoustic was an eko ranger 6 my father bought in the 70s. Amazing and beautiful guitar

£300(ish) Yamaha. Can't go wrong. Andertons don't seem to stock the range though, which is a shame.
Lee should pay a fine every time he does that D run into the G!
YES!!
it's probably more than a feeling for him....
hey thats my only lick

Love my Yamaha fg700s. Solid top, easy to play. Excellent guitar for the money

Sometimes there's nothing like the sound of a good acoustic.
My fender cd60s is awesome. And it's solid top and it's so affordable.
i bought a real nice tanglewood crossroads for £100 new. Got it because my first guitar was a £60 classical tanglwood that was and still is a beauty to play. I highly recommend them! Not sure if they're only for sale in the uk or not though as they are a British company

The Dane didn’t get it, but what a guitarist, I could listen to him all day
What kind of style are they playing in the introduction? I'd like to get to the point where I can solo like the Captain does at the start
Spent 500 on my first acoustic. An Alvarez Artist Series. No regrets at all.
Alvarez, yamaha, or Seagull, Ibanez for inexpensive
Guild, Martin, Taylor, Gibson for more expensive
Alvarez makes some very, very solid guitars for the money
What happened to a good old Yamaha f310
Right?! I have one that's like a million years old and it's perfectly fine.
My first Guitar!
I bought one, and gave it away almost immediately. I hate that guitar. The neck is D-shaped and the tone was pretty meh. I replaced it with a used Taylor Big Baby that I got for $330.

At least you'll impress people with how rich you are.
terrible advice
@@IGarrettI if taken seriously, then for sure. It's the worst. Cheers :)
No Orangewood? Theyre the classic vibes of acoustic guitars
Orangewood is a mail order only company. Andertons only deals with brands that they stock in their store.
Great intro guys, upload the tabs! And generally great video!
Lee’s playing in the beginning was so tasty!
Also i'm in the States, and really want a Sire acoustic guitar. Are there any dealers in the States that have them, or should I just order through Anderton?
Well done vid. Would have been even more telling with all new strings, not just the factory ones.
Had an Alverez for 4 years .An AF30CE . Still sounds and feels great .
I think those lessons really did improve the captain a lot
0:00 Holland, 1945?
What are all these sizes, what’s that about..??
Nice...Makes me want to get my acoustic out. But it's way way late in my state in US. Lol
thats right fellow american - conform to noise levels or get tazed and pepper sprayed, arrested and 5 yrs probation - MURIKA !!!!!

I think Pete was trying to remember the Yamaha FS800 with aged solid spruce top at $200.
