Fantastic filming of a British built Phantom 25 with a very brave crew with their foot firmly planted on the floor. These guys are running in the mid 80’s. On the limit.
Hi Mike, yes it was a very good period of the offshore racing in France, with a big batch of P21/P25. Mid 80's speed for Speedy on the video seems close to the reality. And special thanks to Yann Cadoret who gave me the VHS videotape and Georges Tribolo the Speedy P25 driver who is 73 this year.

I've been a helicopter pilot for nearly 25 years and I'm very familiar with how loud they are inside. I'm actually really surprised that you can hear the boats that well over the noise of what sounds to me like a Bell 206.
Well spoted, but to avoid chopper sound you Need to use directionnel microphone. Cardioid Cardioid microphones pick up sound from only one direction; from in front of the microphone. This means that they are very effective for interviews or performances in loud places, where ambient sound needs to be cancelled out in favor of the interviewee or performer.
@@TheRING21E Thanks for posting. I really enjoyed watching. It took me back to 1974 when I saw my first twin Mercury, I think 120 hp 6 cylinder..the tall ones, on a small boat in Lake Providence LA. I think it ran maybe 70 MPH. Most boats ran 40 or so then. Thanks again.
@@wms1650 Thanks for your your words, in the early 80', I have had a 90 6 cyl also, called tower of power, Your twin's mercury were probably a pair of 115 vertical 6cyl , very thirsty engines like the 90 and the 140 of the same series. Back in the 70 in my country I cannot remember a man saying his boat went to 70 mph, so your boat speed was amazing for a leisure boat in this period!
Johnson my favourite outboard engines. The sound was unmatched!. As a boy it was alway's Johnson because of the "deep roar" sound. The others sounded like "sissy's" to me.
200hp was the base of the limited engine serie, I've an old document which says the 200 GT stock power is 250hp@5500rpm/ with the ski sport kit the power was 265hp at 6500/ with the river race kit the power was 295hp @6750rpm, so the limited edition could be in this range of power, may be someone who worked at Second effort back in the end of 80's, can tell us more.

@@TheRING21E a stock 200gt is not much more than the 10% allowance of hp. The only limited edition factory motors were the 93 and up 200 finger port motors but again about 225hp at the prop unless second effort made a modified limited edition ?
I have one of those engines, built, machined, race ignition, lower unit, just sitting in my garage sleeping for the past 5 yrs. when i remove the side plates on the lower unit. It sounds like a 454 big block drag engine on meth idling. just incredible. I should clarify. Its sitting on the back of my very rare mint condition 1988 Stratos 200 VT Rocket designed by Roark Summerford himself. I also have one of Roarks 1986 STV Pro Comp Sprint bottoms with stepped sponsons. Thats one of the rare 400 lb light weight hulls he built. That boat holds one of Jon Wrights worlds fastest Mercury 2.5 boat engines out of Tinker Toy. World record of 156mph in 1,000ft I believe was the distance.

Yes, well spotted, I've tested this one , for this race the boat was fitted with a 2.4EFI 28inch propeller @ 6900rpm chopper gear ratio 1.87, pretty fast in her category, and champ at the end of all events of this 1989 year competition

@@royvisser90 I Owned a Piranha Carrera also, they were not built in the same way, the boat you can see on the video was very well built, if you're interested on piranha boat story there is a long post on boatmad.com. The location were the piranha boats were built in Antwerpen went on fire and all the moulds completely destroyed as far I know.

Oui Lorient c'était aussi un gros événements la course est est compliqué car beaucoup de vague. Ça fait plaisir de voir que des gens s'intéressent à c'est courses. J'aurai bien aimé avoir vos VHS pour en tirer quelques séquences courtes, j'aurais pu vous les numériser aussi avant que les bandes ne soient collées et donc hors d'usage pour tout le monde.

At the end we reached the pilot who is now in his seventies, he said the top speed is 162km/h so close to 100 mph, the boat is a phantom 25 made by Steve Baker in UK, the engine cowlings are different due to loss of one in a previous race, the rev limiter on these limited edition's are 8000rpm.
but discussing yesterday with another pilot , driving a piranha carrera 2.4efi in the same race, he doubt the top speed was 100mph , 90mph should be more accurate, as the following year, most boats went to 2.4 efi

That's not the props barking, that's the exhaust sound. It still makes the same sound but higher pitch when the props out of the water.

Those Johnsons definitely kicked ass in those days but the 2.4 mercs were equally beasty
One year after this event, for the 1990 racing season on this P25 a pair of 2.4 EFI has been installed.
How long are those 2 strokes running at that rpm? By the sounds they are running wide open?
