I think it's so important to help the kids be cognizant of their feelings around food and how it relates to social interactions. Other good ways to educate kids about nutrition would be to teach them about food supply origins and commercial manufacturing processes and their environmental impact. I LOVED growing vegetables and going on berry foraging walks with my parents and grandparents growing up. I was always eating the clover and violets and loved the feeling of satisfaction from picking veggies right out of the garden, washing them 'helping' to cut them and eating them in a salad. I loved doing stuff like the home made butter and ice cream. It made me feel just a bit magical!

Yes! Thanks for sharing, I love this! We do a lot of this, too! We talk a lot of about where different kinds of food comes from, how better quality food is grown and raised differently from factory farmed and conventional food, and how the better food tastes better. Also I love how our kids can have a connection with where food comes from when they help raise our meat chickens, vegetables, etc.

Such great tips! Swapping candy for toys is such a great idea. My mum gave our teachers things like fruit bars for us when sugary treats were handed out. We brought our own food including a slice of GF fruit sweetened cake to birthday parties and I appreciated that my mum would put in our versions of treats, so I didn’t feel left out.
Back 20-30 years ago people really didn’t understand being allergic or intolerant to certain foods, so I had to teach even adults what had gluten in etc. I know that wasn’t the point of this video, but my mum was also very health conscious and natural minded so I relate to this so well.

Love your videos so much! So calm and encouraging. Please continue, especially what we eat in a day/week. They make this lifestyle seem easier, like I have friend along the way.

Hi Marisa. I am researching GAPS and I found your channel. Thank you for sharing this information. I live in a country with the highest amount of sugar eaten in a day, in the world. The thing that I find most difficult is the birthday parties. It is costumery to serve an insane amount of sugar and candy at my kid's friends bday parties. They also are invited to everyone, since this is how things are done here. I would love to hear what do you do with the social life of your kids, how do you handle the grandparents that want to give their grandchildren candy, what do you do with the parties or when your kids visit friends. Thank you!

This is what I was thinking? There are children’s birthday parties pretty much every weekend, how on earth do you manage what they eat but not exclude them from socialising with friends? The world seems to revolve around kids consuming sugar, short of living off grid in isolation I don’t see how you can stick to a gaps diet and let them attend parties etc.

You're welcome! I'm sorry, that sounds very similar to the way things are done in many areas of the USA 😬 But it can be done! Here's what we do: For Grandparents, one set already eats like we do. The other set doesn't live near us. When they did, we were just clear on how we wanted our kids to eat, and they respected it. We offered ideas for alternatives, like "they just want to spend time with you, read books, play, they don't need candy to enjoy time with their grandparents" which is totally true. For parties and social times, it depends on the needs of the child at the time. Sometimes they need to stick to GAPS, so we send their own food along. Of course we only do this if we trust the adults. I find out what will be served, and make a real food version of it (for example, grass fed hot dog, GAPS cupcake, etc.). This is what Dr. Becky Plotner did when her kids were young, too. Before letting her young son out at the party, she would look him in the face, in all seriousness, and tell him, "I want you to make sure you do not let those other kids feel bad that you have better food than they do." 😁 If the child doesn't need to stick to GAPS, and is well grounded in good food, it can be more relaxed. For example, my oldest will go and enjoy the time, making choices about what to eat from what is served. It's very individual, but for her, if she eats some pizza, salad, and a little cake a few times a year, she's fine. She's almost 9 and has done this since she was 6. I'm always impressed by how well she manages things, avoiding things she knows wouldn't taste good or wouldn't make her feel well. We also talk about how relationships, time spend with people, and activities are the most important when it comes to parties and time with friends. Food is important, and has a place, but it isn't the be all, end all! We should be able to enjoy time with others even if everyone isn't eating the exact same way. We don't have birthday parties every weekend, usually a few times a year. If it were more often we'd send our own food every time. We do have hot lunch served every Friday at school, and my kids always bring their own lunch instead. Since we teach and talk about food choices so much at home, and since they love real food and prefer it, it really prepares them for success. Of course, if you're dealing with a food addiction situation, that is different would need to be handled totally differently. I hope this helps!

Do they eat the meat and fat cold at school? I m having trouble bringing gaps food with me because I work on the go and I don't like to eat the meat when it's cold.

Your kids don’t mind the leftovers not heated up? Can’t they go in a thermos too? These are great tips! My son is going into kindergarten. I have been trying to figure out what treat to send that the teacher can have on hand. He can’t do artificial food dye. I wish I could put him on gaps but with his Sensory Issues it feels impossible.
