Fun fact: there’s a history of lighthouse keepers going crazy. This is believed to be a result of mercury poisoning, since what allowed the light to function properly is a pool of mercury. A massive pool of mercury. Exposure to so much of it for so long causes hallucinations and general sickness, which made afflicted keepers hate their job and either pass away (from su*cide or illness) or abandon their post forever.
Edit: the mercury pool was supposed to suspend the spinning light mechanism, because it’s dense enough in large quantities to keep heavy objects on top of it, while also allowing for suspension because it’s a liquid.

I always thought that jumpscares that don’t scream at you and instead just reveal themselves are so, so much more terrifying than ones that do and I’m glad this game took them to the next level. I will always remember Sunny’s first night in Omori, that figure at the door…

When you look at the mirror and you just see her behind you got my heart pumping the first time I played Omori. The fact that sunny doesn’t react to it at all he just accepts it and how it wasn’t like a screamer or something just dead silence.

@@willevensen7130 exactly, when it’s a jumpscare with noise you’re terrified for one moment, but then soon after you’re like “guess the game pulled one on me”…
On the contrary, when the sound/ambiance don’t change this scary feeling doesn’t stop - you weren’t prepared to see what you see, and you don’t even know what it is. That feeling of not knowing what you’re looking at, or the way the game doesn’t really acknowledge it as an abnormal thing is so much more powerful than a regular jumpscare…

i like how the chase scenes use the monster's POV. it adds to the horror of the not knowing what the creature actually looks like and makes the player's creativity take control of what they think the monster looks like. it's good horror game philosophy. the less you see of an unknown, the scarier it can become.

    • @tms_comfrey

i believe it's because it leaves more up to the imagination. like in high res models, you just perceive the monsters as they are, but when you can't make out the details of the monster's appearance, it forces your brain into inputting it's own elements, which make it scarier

The scariest part of this I think is the small environment and the monsters it shows you that are awakening. The worst feeling a person can feel, in my opinion, is dread, and the threat of a monster in a cramped environment that you can barely walk in, let alone run, is terrifying, and creates massive amounts of dread.

Honestly, this is such a breath of fresh air from the typical indie horror games. It's like Little Nightmares. There are no jumpscares, no apparent threat, just... Silence. It's a very unique take on the typical horror game and takes advantage of nearly every aspect to frighten the player and simultaneously keep it interesting. It's really uncanny, like you're not supposed to be there. It reminds me a lot of No Players Online, where you're alone, and you have to figure things out for yourself. Anything could happen at any moment. It's horror done RIGHT

Nothing like a well done lovecraftian horror; the kind that relies on uncomfortable questions that linger, regardless if you want them answered or even if you can answer them. Giving the player the canvas and a sketch but letting the them paint in the scene and details, it's such a tricky balance to pull off that goes understated.

Like the monster used to be a gross bug monster which made it more related to the moths and there was even a segment where you play as the previous keeper slowly turning into the monster. I love indie horror games, they always hold a special place in my heart. The blocky and low-res graphics give them this charm and make it scarier imo, I love games like this! This is actually a very cool-sounding game, I like how it's not entirely fictional, too (As in going missing on an island isn't unheard of, so it's somewhat realistic, which adds to the horror). If I had steam, I'd play this, it sounds fun! Thanks for pumping out banger videos every other day, take care of yourself! :)

As someone who doesn’t play any horror games or really consume anything horror related (I just don’t like being frightened, even though I handle it very well) your videos are extremely entertaining and educational for me.because I get to understand WHY someone who enjoys horror likes the aspects of a game.
As a student about to graduate with a degree in game design I believe that one of the most important skills a developer can have is to view your projects from as many perspectives as possible. Even if I’m not making a horror game having one section that has horror like elements to raise tension is still something I need to do properly and watching your videos gives me great insight as to what you think works for a horror game.
Obviously as I just said having multiple perspectives is good so you aren’t the only one I watch for horror content but I would LOVE to see you review more indie horror games like this one.

Yeah you have to know what works and what doesn't work and learning psychology is actually really useful since your using psychological warfare with the player and making tension suspense and genuine fear monster design is also a big factor you have to make your monster scary but you can make a monster that looks ominous and disturbing to look at and trigger certain fears like arachnophobia and things like a flesh like humanoid with an ominous smile walking towards you and you can't move gives the player dread of what the monster is going to do to them and what is going to happen next and gameplay is very important you CAN make a fun but things like yumei Nikki where it's an experience and it's pretty jarring when a change of POV and scenery change since it's unexpected and when something like a chase happens or something disturbing happens the players brain has to think quick and this what makes a horror game good the games plays the player like a fiddle and messes with their heads and gives them fear anxiety pressure and stress

"For the dead gave been forgotten", with how you depicted this beast, it reminds me much of DnD's false hydra, which makes itself be ignored by the minds of others so it can drag people down in its pit to feast on them without problems. The people it eats are forgotten and even people with proper relationships like a wife being eaten by it, make it so that the husband doesnt think he had a wife in the first place.
I'm not sure if you understood any of this, but it's just a thought

    • @ndt_dynamite2247
      @ndt_dynamite2247 ปีที่แล้ว +21

It’s victims are erased from the memories of others, as if they never even existed in the first place. One of DnD’s most horrifying monsters.
Personally, I like the concept of reverse false hydras, someone just appearing someday, and it’s as if they were always there, but somethings not quite right, you can never remember exactly how you met them, others always tell conflicting stories about them that can’t possibly make sense according to linear time, yet no one ever seems to question it. And they’re always there. Even if you could have sworn they just left, they’re there again, and their appearance seems to shift everytime you see them. But, that’s how they’ve always looked, isn’t it? Maybe you’re just imagining things.
In truth, they’re a reverse false hydra, draining your life force slowly as they hang around you, you age rapidly, but that’s just how old you’ve always been, right? Ah, mind’s not what it used to be, age creeping up on you. Perfectly natural. Happens to everyone eventually right? But you could have sworn that you were young and full of life just days ago. But that can’t be right can it? It was years ago, yes, so many years. You feel tired. Your friend suggests you take a nap. Yes, that seems a wonderful idea. So very tired. Just a quick… nap.
Another victim drained, the insidious monster moves on. It took only days, and all that was left was a desiccated husk.

7:58 Fun fact, that section is what a second person game would look like.
First person, obviously you see from the exact POV of your character. Third person, also obvious, where your camera and character are separated. It's just like writing, first person would be "I", as if you're the one doing the actions in the game. Third person is the character's name, and while you're still technically doing the actions, the camera perspective makes it more like it's the character's own actions.
Second person writing, meanwhile, mainly uses words like "you" to explain who's doing something. Mostly choose your own adventure books and instructions. But in the chase sections of the game, it's also kinda applicable. Since you're seeing from the monster's POV, calling your player character "me", while technically correct, is kinda weird, and "you" feels more correct, just like the second person writing.
No this doesn't really have anything to do with the video, I just thought I'd share a fun fact.
Edit: Didn't expect so many previous commenters to know this little tidbit. Meh, oh well.

Yo I just found this channel loving it so far I love horror games but hate to get scared sometimes. So videos like this are great allowing me to explore a horror game that sounds like a lot of fun and has interesting stories without getting so scared by a game that I just stop playing. Keep doing what you’re doing because I’m here for it.

Hey Pastra! While watching this, it reminded me a lot of this horror game on Steam called "How Fish is Made". It's quite short (finished it in about 45 minutes), and free. I would be ecstatic if you made a video about it!

I like that you’re pushing out videos even faster than before. Especially with variety.
Feels like I’m rating a shop, lol.

Never expected anyone to make a video on this one! It’s one of my personal favourites. What can I say, I love a little eldritch monstrosities.

You've convinced me: this is awesome.
This is the first time someone's done a video on something and convinced me not to spoil myself, holy cow.
Edit: Tried giving it to a friend to try it and they kept running into the problem near the end where they kept dying and nothing happening. So how vague the game is ruins the experience for people, and I didn't get to play it yet. How unfortunate I ruined it for both of us.
