Something to add about final Nemesis. In the Original, one of the things that really drive the point of him being on his last legs is the fact that it doesn't immediately fight you - he actually eats up the corpse of a dead tyrant to achieve his final form, and that's the presentation for the fight: you're not his target anymore, he just wants to eat to not die

    • @Umbra_Ursus
      @Umbra_Ursus ปีที่แล้ว +935

I don't think it was even eating: I think it was taking biomass to replace what was beyond saving or replacing properly. In other words, we did so much to him by that point, Nemesis wasn't able to properly regen anymore, or even hold a consistent build. It was just desperately clinging, not to life, but being able to hunt STARS. Even in near-death, it's sole goal isn't flight or fight, its to hunt *us.*
Then the remake is just a big "scary" meat wall with his head still being more-than-less intact, and I wonder what happened to horror games over the years...

What hurts Nemesis in the remake was that he was treated more as a boss event rather than a randomized ongoing threat. The tension and fear isn't really there when you know when his sections are coming and that the the most of the time, you're just pushing forward and dodging heavily telegraphed attacks for most of the encounters. Don't even get me started on how wasted his first form was.

That's because Nemesis was RE's take on the Terminator. I mean, it really is. Unfortunately, the remake just made him another, hulking RE monster. It's weird, cuz they had just handled Mr. X correctly in RE 2, and in the newer games, they had done these types of enemies correctly in Village (Dimetrescu), and especially in 7 (both Jack and Marguerite). In fact, I would say Jack Baker is the closest we have gotten to the modern equivalent of the original Nemesis, considering how the dude is somehow still alive even in the End of Zoe DLC.

One thing that upset me about the remake was his mutations being completely and entirely beneficial. In the original, the mutations Nemesis underwent looked grotesque and like they were painful. In the remake any time Nemesis undergoes a crippling injury, his body adapts to the damage and becomes an even more powerful monster than he was before -- making you wonder why he even bothers to avoid injury, when injury just seems to make him more powerful. A big contrast is the final forms Nemesis take. Nemesis in the original was this disgusting blob monster, with broken, misshapen legs, that was only barely able to hobble around. In the remake, Nemesis becomes this horrifying tentacle monster the size of a small building, that is now stronger than ever.
The reason why I bring this up? Because Nemesis at his heart was meant to be a homage to the Terminator, a relentless killer that absolutely will not stop, until you are dead. He doesn't feel pity, remorse, or fear, and he will never despair at his own injuries, but will simply power through them because self-preservation is an afterthought to his primary goal of destroying you. Nemesis going through this gradual breakdown as the story progresses, getting shot, caught in explosions, even having his head melted off by corrosive chemicals, and even falling into a vat of acid, he just refuses to stop. Nemesis, from his activation until his last breath is designed to bring about your doom, and NOTHING will distract him from that mission -- he is completely unfettered by concepts of pain or fear.

    • @upsidedownfoxxo879
      @upsidedownfoxxo879 ปีที่แล้ว +61

This is just me spitballing, but maybe nemesis didn't want to go "all out" immediately. He underestimated Jill, packed his weapons and went for a surprise visit not expecting to be torched and blown up inside a subway. Then he realized that he would have to try a little harder, and mutated into the much less practical dog form. In the end he even sacrificed all his mobility in order to be able to withstand her. He's still sacrificing things along the way, like the extra energy it likely takes to "operate" the dog form. I'd imagine that he'd still take that into account, since higher energy consumption and the overall larger size will make pursuing Jill much harder than the vaguely humanoid form

what are your thoughts on the way g-birkin progressively evolves to get stronger after each fight in re2? or would you chalk that up to the differences in the g and t viruses? /gen
it seems they go through similar forms throughout the remakes, with g mutating more and more beneficially until stage 4/5 when it’s gone through so much damage it’s basically just a mass of cells. the final fight nemmy is similar - though i guess that’s only because he was chilling in a vat of acid.

    Hear me out:
The dog Nemesis could have worked if it was a SEPARATE enemy, effectively being a prototype that you only encounter in the lab, one of the few areas in the game the dog Nemesis could have worked to a genuinely terrifying effect, maybe with it being unable to be killed until the original Nemesis, the one having actually chased us for the whole game, would find it's way into the lab after you and IMMEDIATELY offs the prototype, both giving a plausible reason this version exists that doesn't piss everyone off whilst also bolstering the original's strength and power as well as his threat. That woulda been amazing as an addition.

Exactly. The Nemesis that appeared in Raccoon City wasn't the only one of its kind. Having different Nemesis forms being explained by prototypes that weren't completely perfected but still had some usage in Umbrellas plots. I would even take this a step further and have it so instead of Nemesis killing the prototypes, he commands them like an officer with their military dogs, which would make thematic sense since the Nemesis's are bio-organic military weapons.
This would help fix the issue with design in the context it's used in by having the original Nemesis and the dog prototype bring separate entities, while also allowing for the dog Nemesis to properly shine and make people appreciate it, because I don't see the dog form as a complete downgrade of a second form. In a different viewpoint from Pastra, I see it as something that wasn't utilized right. With this new context in mind, this would make Nemesis more effective and scary in new ways, as now not only do the player have to worry about the original which was already a formidable foe in his own right, but now they have to deal with imperfect clones that while they might not have the intelligence and complete power of the original, are still dangerous in their own right and far more powerful than any other enemies in the game, making the player have to proceed with caution when dealing with them. Then, when they are inevitably killed by Jill, Nemesis would use the carcasses to REPAIR himself since they share the same DNA and make defeating Nemesis much harder than before. This also makes Nemesis more dangerous for an adaptable A.I., as it will now control and manipulate other enemies' behavior in order to kill Jill.
This can even be taken further by having Nemesis' final form in the Remake to be another prototype that mutated into a monstrosity that Jill now has to defeat. It would serve as a very challenging but fun midboss, reserving Nemesis' final, corpse form from the original as the true final boss. It would both have the grandiose spectacles of the current Resident Evils and the effective last stand of the original RE3. The best of both worlds.
All of this would strengthen Nemesis's status as an intelligent bioweapon that won't stop until its goals are completed, even if it has to control others to do its bidding.

Another small detail about how Nemesis is introduced in the original is how Brad begs for Jill to help him moments before his death. At least for me it makes the moment afterwards feel very personal. A member of the group has been attacked and asked for help, help which you did not manage to give. No heroics, just that small hint of relief on his face as he stumbles to you, wounded, then gets off'd by this big, imposing threat that has been ominously foreshadowed, and clearly vocalizing that he wasn't willing or ready to die.
A heroic sacrifice kinda detracts from that instinctive feeling of helplessness in the face of said overwhelming threat. I love the original for that.

Nemesis was simply a brilliant concept when it was released. A tyrant that was a reoccurring boss that stalked, toyed, hunted and attacked you relentlessly. Even if the events were pre-scripted they were pre-scripted in a way where your decisions in game factored how you met him. The famous Clocktower scene was legendary because it was the first time in the game where the encounter with Nemesis was forced. You couldn’t escape, couldn’t run out of a door, either you killed him or HE killed you and the game ended.
All that drama, all that pressure, all of the incredible game of cat and mouse and head games gone.. for a low budget action movie with one of the most foul mouthed female protagonists in recent video game history. Instead of QTE selections, planning your routes in your head ahead of time, and managing your items. We got “You think I don’t know how to F***K you up?!” followed by loud noises and explosions.

I know this comment is super late, but there is something I would like to point out regarding Nemesis’s transformations in the original and remake.
In the original, it looks like every time he transforms, it’s not him trying to evolve or gain power, but rather like he is falling apart. He goes from the solid and stable Nemesis in the coat to a rapidly deteriorating form in the chemical factory, before then concluding with what is essentially a maimed corpse with hastily replaced body parts. Nemesis feels like he is falling apart, and that in my opinion both worked to make him visually scary and helped inspire this sense of triumph in the player. He may be able to recover from death, but look what you did to him!
In the remake they turned Nemesis into a pokemon (or Freiza from DBZ take your pick). He transforms not because he is literally falling apart, but rather because he is changing into stronger (if less controllable) forms. Going from humanoid, to dog, to giant mess of flesh and limbs. It makes Nemesis feel both incompetent and bland. Incompetent because: “Why did he not just start with the 2nd or 3rd form if they are so much better?”. Bland because: “How many bad guys/monsters in fiction can evolve and transform to become stronger intentionally?”.
That’s just my take on this, anyone else got any thoughts?

Not only it made him a generic cut-off cartoon villian that gets power ups when it is convenient, it also made him lose his identity as an entity. We see different versions of him in each iteration we go through and they all exhibit different qualities, essentially losing it's central identity. As you said greatly, it was a journery of destruction in the first game; making the player feel the degragation of the nemesis through all the damage player dished out on him. On the other side however, we have this gallery of monsters that we had to go through to get to the end. Essentially making it the usual railroaded Resident Evil experience, which in the end, lost the characteristic qualities that made him our "nemesis".

That's for sure. Honestly, in a weird reversal Mr. X got way scarier in the Resident Evil 2 Remake and Nemesis lost what made him great. Mr. X in the original is a scripted and semi-predictable occurrence within the game that is there to drain resources at specific junctures in the story. Remake Mr. X is a constant threat that will not leave the R.C.P.D. after you meet him. Yes, his first appearance is highly predictable on repeat playthroughs, but his presence is constantly felt when he begins roaming the entire police department. I get more and more scared to kill anything because my gunshots will attract his attention. He works so well as a stalker because he is designed to always be somewhere near you, but has to actually find you to attack you. He is also horrifyingly intimidating, standing a full foot-and-a-half taller than Leon with a completely black ensemble that leaves only his pale face easily visible at a distance. I will never forget a moment where I was roaming around the first floor hallways. These hallways are barely lit and only the odd lightning strike and Leon's flashlight help with visibility. There was a small group of zombies at the end of the long corridor ambling about. I was at the exact opposite end and I saw them being pushed aside by a nearly invisible force. Until my brain recognized the quickly approaching stomps and I saw the outline sharpen into focus. I still get chills from that memory because he seemed to almost fade out of the shadows and radiated a menace that few horror game villains can hope to match. He made an already anxiety-inducing situation (trying to escape the R.C.P.D. and Raccoon City as a whole) even more stressful. Not to mention his constant presence and overhanging threat that you have to deal with throughout the rest of the game.
Nemesis in the original was a similar, if not more competent threat in the context of the gameplay. Nemesis in the Remake is a complete joke with absolutely zero menace and minimal difficulty. His appearance is less fear-inducing, his presence absent. It saddens me that this is what people can be introduced to as Nemesis for the exact reason you described. You didn't get the hype and that's a disservice to the character. I actually haven't played DBD because I have heard it isn't in a great state and the sheer amount of money required to be spent to get characters is intimidating to say the least. That said, is he better represented there in the remake?

What they could have done, and in fact it was something I was hoping they were going to do, is make him reactive to your tactics. If you stand your ground and fight him he becomes better at dodging, tanking attacks, and will eventually bring the flamethrower to make standing your ground and taking cover much more difficult. If you run he becomes better at pathfinding, using his tentacles from a distance, and will eventually bring the rocket launcher to snipe you from a distance. If you hide and use stealth he becomes more observant and meticulous in searching areas, begins using vantage points to try and spot you, and will eventually bring a minigun to saturate areas with bullets in an attempt to flush you out. Expand on the idea that he's always thinking and the original game's concept of your actions having consequences and effects on how he behaves. Then give him additional abilities to track and locate you beyond simply seeing or hearing you, and the ability to lay traps and ambushes. Then put a lot more emphasis on the almost open-world concept of the original, where you have multiple goals that you can do in any order, where if you spend too much time in an area he'll eventually find you. This guy could have been next-level if they'd given a fuck.

They could have also leaned into his constant chase by removing areas where you are safe. For a large portion of RE2 X won’t chase you into certain areas, especially in story sections. They should have leaned into the randomness of his appearance by adding variables that increase the chances of him just showing up and instead of safe areas force, the player kill or hide from him to temporarily escape before he appears again. He starts off with a punch, charging punch, and a grab. Then later he gets a rocket launcher, a dodge, then a ranged tentacle impalement move. The worst part of the R3make and the biggest insult *by far* to Nemesis is that he's *completely irrelevant* to the story.
I mean, think about it, what does Nemesis do in the remake that actually effects the plot?
He doesn't kill Brad anymore, that goes to the random zombies.
He's barely treated like a threat throughout the entire game by Jill and Carlos and is barely around for nearly half the game.
He kills one person and its a random character we barely got to know.
Nikolai is not only given more of a spotlight as an antagonist, but he gets a final showdown with Jill *right after* Nemesis is permanently killed off.
If we were to remove Nemesis from the plot and replace him with another Mr.X , or even just a generic monster, very little would actually change.
So, long story short, Nemesis is treated like a jobber in the game that's *named after him!*
God, the remake was a disappointment.

I'm not a huge fan of the Resident Evil franchise, so I didn't know much about Nemesis and why he was such an iconic character before watching this video. Heck, I mainly knew him from Dead by Daylight, that crossover you mentioned. I think that honestly the most striking part for me is his visual design, and man I'm now kind of upset that we didn't get a more faithful recreation of his original design for "Remastered Nemesis."
I also don't see why they had to make him such a derp. The point of Nemesis isn't just that he's Unstoppable Creature, like practically every other horror antagonist at this point, you've clearly shown that he is intended to be so much more than just a Very Tough Zombie - he's an intelligent, even tactically-minded threat that could jump out anywhere, anytime, and kill you. He knows what you're doing, he knows what to do to stop you, and he will kill you or die trying. Good luck getting him to die though!
I particularly don't see why they removed him killing Brad from the remake. If you know the character is going to die, and they're an established character with some genuine weight in the story, there needs to be some actual impact to their death. Changing it from "Nemesis kills Brad right in front of Jill, cementing him in her mind as an extremely dangerous threat" to "Brad dies offscreen lol" for no other apparent reason than making it different from the original is just... well, dumb.
The example you showed, as well, of him just picking Jill up by the head but for some unfathomable reason NOT killing her immediately really serves no other purpose than making Nemesis seem dumb. There are a hundred other ways that cutscene could play out, without him very specifically grabbing her by the head, that would still make sense as to how she ends up on the ground in front of him. Maybe he reaches down to grab her right as she puts her arm up to the next rung of the ladder, pulling her up by her arm as she has to fight to free herself. Maybe he doesn't reach down the ladder, but is just reaching the area as she gets to the top, leading to a single well-placed punch from his implacable fist sending her flying to the ground.
Especially, though, especially that initial appearance you showed with him surprising Jill in her apartment, I just... I have no words. He can punch through a wall, but not an apartment door? He can punch through a wall, but not a bookshelf? He's intelligent enough to ambush her from a direction she's not expecting but can't actually land a solid punch on her? Why is this Nemesis dumb? Are they retconning the overall intelligence levels of the Umbrella bioweapons, because otherwise I don't get it.
And yeah, the dog form just... isn't Nemesis. It isn't. It's another accidental creation of the T virus at this point.

    • @DarkCloudIceX
      @DarkCloudIceX ปีที่แล้ว +18

To add one more point here about him not killing Brad: it makes Nemesis seem even more incompetent. In the original, at the start of the game, there are two STARS members in Raccoon City: Brad and Jill. And the thing made to kill STARS (and keeps repeating that word very hauntingly to drive this point home) just arrives at the scene and efficiently does what he's programmed to do, and in such a way that you, the player, knows that if you don't act quickly, Jill will be next.
In the Remake, Nemesis doesn't kill any STARS members. Meaning he doesn't do what he was primarily made to do at all.

What did Jill do? She just shut up and sulk, no retort at all even though she's 100% in the right.

btw only in the original that Carlos referring to Nicholai as his superior, being the highest rank in the platoon. In the Remake they appears to converse on the same level. So that's no excuse for Nicholai having more authority on the matter. Also in the original Jill only *heard* Nicholai shooting a wounded soldier so she has no say whether he was really infected. While in the remake, Nicholai straight up executed him in front of Jill yet she didn't dare talking back, despite survived the mansion incident and have much more experience about the infection.

The point stands when Mikhail says something like "you didnt even ask this fine young lady her name." it proved that Carlos did help her of course, but was cluelessly flirting with her even after seeing her armed (not his fault for not knowing, but put yourself in Jill's shoes it might make more sense to feel as if you're being looked down on as woman) He also attempted to assist her by holding her shoulder (unnecessary on Jill's part but harmless intention on Carlos' part and also telling Jill what a radio was 😆which was innocent but sometimes stuff like that it comes off as condescending, though the writers might have intended it as mansplaining, it ended up just looking like playful banter hinting at romance... i did enjoy their scenes so 🤷‍♀)
Though as the game progressed they became better allies and Jill became more grateful and reliant on Carlos, and him to her, after they knew how capable each other were. Y'know, we have fond memories of playing Nemesis on my mom's old handed laptop back in the day. We were maybe 15 and it was 2006 or so. We were really surprised when we watched a few people play the remake and be unimpressed with the Nemesis (we couldn't afford the game ourselves) because we always remembered him as so intimidating and such a threat! It had been years since we played it by that point though, so we chalked it up to 'old memories.'
It was nice to see proof we were actually right. Thanks for making this.

RE2 and RE4 were remade by the main dev team. RE3 was remade by a secondary team on a rush while the main team was working on Village.
Honestly, I think they might've done a better job if they had more time, but the game was launched only 1 year after RE2 remake. There was definitely pressure to meet those deadlines.

I think if dev1 did a re3 remake years later it would connect with re2 remake since the story of re3 remake would be more fleshed out with the events tying outbreak as an Easter egg, the rpd not being overrun yet and so on to make the story work especially making nemesis more of a threat than mr x that would randomly show up more often no matter where you are as nemesis will be able to learn what weapons you have and changing his own from time to time depending on some of the boss fights until he looses the weapon

The original RE3 was launched 1 year after the original RE2, and it was also rushed. Honestly the treatment of the R3make mirrors the treatment of the original RE3 very accurately. Capcom never cared much about RE3 in my opinion, since it was always meant to be a side game. Code: Veronica was originally supposed to be the 3rd mainline title, but got demoted to side game due to Sony having exclusive rights to the RE3 name. (Code: Veronica was originally a Dreamcast exclusive.)

Another point of him turning into that mutant monster in the original was the fact he ate that creature that looks like a tyrant similar to MR X and Birkin, which made me think he ate a G virus mutant making him evolve because of that, so it was like a final gamble to get Jill and defeat her.

Remake Nemesis certainly felt like one of those "Look at how they massacred my boy" type of situations. I think part of the fact that Nemesis' final form in the original is so good while his "dog form" in the remake is such the opposite despite them both turning him into more animalistic and unrecognizable monsters is the fact that the pacing of it in the remake completely eliminates the huge impact it makes to see him devolved into such a beast. Keeping him relatively familiar, humanoid, calculated and intelligent for the entire original game keeps an expectation in your mind that finally, only at the very end gets completely shattered and makes the transformation pack such oomph that really hammers in the idea that, because of your efforts, he really isn't the same nemesis and is on his last leg. Having him transform into a similarly instinct-driven beast halfway into the game after only one true, humanoid nemesis form just.. completely ruins the impact.

From my point of view I think that the most vital problem about Resident Evil 3 is that developers didn't sit down before creating game and rethink about what makes the Nemesis as a great Stalker enemy.
They noticed that this model of enemy is extremely similar to Mr X so in order to change it they Remake Nemesis and go with it "slightly" overboard making him in the process entire different. Forgetting about everything that making this enemy awesome. Further more. Change entire gameplay experience into something less enjoyable as a game but interactive film with QTE. Making expensive fighting Nemesis not even a slight reminisce of previous version and remembered fights.
Challenges are creating to overcome, and the way you are choosing to do it is entire up to you what older RE3 catching perfectly. You have no guts or skill to fight against Nemesis head on? You can always pick path of avoiding confrotation (not only by escaping in gameplay mode but also in decision making section). The challenges you overcome is entirely yours decision and if you choose take harder path the blame is entirely yours and that was awesome. That make stakes high and give you more though about your decision and approach to solve problem.
Remake making great example that game developers care about players like morons who needs been carrying by hand and not making gameplay too stressful or irritating afraid that they split sea of hatred in the internet because of difficulty level (forgetting about flourish entire "Janra" of the Demon Souls games that core basic gameplay is entire about overcoming the challenges throw directly in players face). Always fighting with Nemesis is high risk, high reward matter but taking entire challenge away they also take all satisfaction of overcome it. If creators afraid that entire game will become too predictable and repeatable why they didn't change entire location? Like boss fight on the bell tower change into fight on new location like helicopter landing spot on special heliport behind the RPD building? New location give the edge of anticipation and uncertainty what is behind the corner without losing the flow. Core mechanic of fighting Nemesis should left behind untouched but changing scenery and making battlefield more adjust to players advantage and disadvantage against the boss make entire new and fresh experience without making the game to similar with the original. (Honestly the first battle at the entrance to Police Department with Nemesis should stay the same. Of course in refreshed scenery and new animation to the Big Bad Boss X-D. Is too memorable and iconic to the series to just abandon it in the sake of "Entire new Experience").
Entire Resident Evil universe is build around viruses that evolve humans beyond recognition into humanless monsters. Giving more deadly tools for enemy in exchange for humanity. Funny that creators fail to notice that Nemesis was created as Evolution of Mr. X idea making him more deadly version of previous one. Taking off the challenges of overcoming by yourself threat bigger that Tyrant Monster by giving field to others character to taking care of problem for us are not so bad ass taking us ability to choose way of confrontation. Which was the core of oryginal game. Choose between confrontation or avoiding fight and by it also your own level of difficulty.

I feel like the dog could have worked had we seen Nemesis absorb a licker to try to "fix" the damage he'd been getting through the fights with us, building on what the original did as well as the original absorbing the tyrant corpse at the end. So we see it devolving by absorbing others to survive ((similar to Mr X's changes)) this giving a narrative reason to the dog form as well as giving it an actually very interesting and scary ability, to regenerate by using other zombies/mutations as fuel to heal itself. Could even have changed the final fight a little in that you cause a repeated breakdown with it having to constantly absorb lesser zombies to stay alive draining it's mind more and more from the repeated absorption.

Tip for dealing with Nemmy in og RE3: don't focus on grenades when making ammo. Focus on making ENHANCED AMMO. Whether for the handgun or shotgun, the enhanced ammo does massive damage to Nemmy, and is far more plentiful than grenades ever could be. Don't neglect the grenades you pick up around town, but don't waste gunpowders making them.

Speedrunners will argue against this actually as freeze rounds are the strongest and most useful rounds in the game in Nemesis%, and you have to use even more powders to make enhanced rounds. A single 6 rounds of base grenade rounds can be converted into 18 freeze rounds with CCC.

@@cacodemum I wouldn't be sure on that; I don't speedrun. I do know that, assuming you use every gunpowder A to make a set of hg or eventually enhanced hg ammo, you can get hundreds of each. Neither sg ammo nor gunpowder B are as plentiful, but I have still stockpiled more than 50 enhanced sg ammo. If you save your enhanced ammo for Nemmy, you have way more than enough. To be honest, the remakes design concept COULD work for a different boss. A boss that goes from a sophisticated killer, maybe one with a strict internal code, to something animalistic, chaotic, and unpredictable. A villain going from sipping wine and twirling a mustache to biting someone to death could work amazingly in a narrative. But as a remake, they already had a perfect haracter blueprint. Just use that and play with the horror of mental degradation on a different future character.

Nemesis was always one of my favorite gaming icons for many of the reasons you listed that made the original game great. They neutered the hell out of him. Mr. X in the remake is more Nemesis than Nemesis, which is why he's been so well-received. This video hits the nail on the head

When I was playing the remake, I casually save my "stronger ammo" to use it in later fight because we all know how menacing Nemesis is in the original RE3. When I reached the final fight, I just thought "is that it?" It was so short and dissapointed with the ending.
Good video btw. I just like also to add, maybe the difference in gameplay is to adjust it to "modern audiences".. basically people who like shorter campaigns and easier difficulty.
