I first saw Nureyev in 1965 dancing Swan Lake with Margot Fonteyn and the Royal Ballet. I cannot describe the electricity that shot through the audience when he came onto the stage. I first saw Rudolf Nureyev on American TV in 1961 , shortly after his defection to the West. I was totally awestruck by his agility and talent. His leaps in to the air seemed to last forever and his charisma came right through the TV screen and took my breath away. Unfortunately , I never got the chance to see him dance in person, but I watched every film or TV appearance he made and reveled in his cat- like grace. Nureyev left us too soon, but he will always be remembers as the greatest ballet dance of his era , a true successor to Vaslav Nijinsky .

A handsome man he was , that chiseled face , so Godly perfect as of God spent a little more time on Rudolf Nureyev , he masculine yet am elegance , a debonaire dancer is the word ….. i saw him long ago when he was ready to retire in 🇦🇺 He put mens classucak ballet on the world map , yes it was Nureyev ….. then they kept coming …. Thank you for your divine dance ……. The world misses your perfection , grace , turns jumps but that perfect face and Fonteys only partner
There was a sadness about him even though not one image of him ever hints at it. He was so hauntingly ethereal and so, SO beautiful. Eight years behind the other dancers and never able to go home to his mum, he must have been desperately lonely inside. I'm guessing, but I suppose that drove him to be the greatest. A shame someone in American politics (at the time) couldn't have helped him mend relations with his native country and bring his mother here or let him go back freely. He gave America so much, it just seems only fair to have given him at least that.
Tracy Pfau You must be very young.... At the time the communist borders were uncrossable.... nothing could be done .... the political situation was truly beyond belief.... he suffered greatly because of that , because of his immense decision.... his family suffered too .... and not only psychologically....
My understanding of his defection while he was in France is because he had been told that morning that he would not continue on with the group to England, but was being sent back to Russia. Their excuse was so that he could dance for some special occasion, however, he knew better, and was convinced he would be put into a gulag (prison) because he had been living freely in Paris and not following orders. This is exactly the kind of thing the Communist Soviet government did to those they could not control. There was absolutely nothing America could have done for him politically. There is no way the Soviets would have allowed any of his family out. He did eventually return in 1989 when things were starting to relax and communism finally failing in Russia.
I got to see him in The King and I when I was little. I didn’t know who he was but I thought he was so miscast, lol. When Anna was supposedly teaching the king to dance the king started dancing circles around her! He barely touched the floor and his leg muscles were so engaged under those tights. I was close to the stage, too, so I vividly recall that. So glad I got to see him. ❤

A beautiful tribute for a beautiful man.. Thanks for posting
I did my senior term paper on RN. 1975. I adored him. This is beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing! 💜
Yes he would have been 70 years old!!! I can't even figure out how he would have been like... But that's so comforting to see that other people still have a thought for him today! Happy birthday Rudi! May you dance forever with Margot, Erik and all your friends...
👏
Как птица летящая над сценой )))

A handsome man he was , that chiseled face , so Godly perfect as of God spent a little more time on Rudolf Nureyev , he masculine yet am elegance , a debonaire dancer is the word …..
i saw him long ago when he was ready to retire in 🇦🇺
He put mens classucak ballet on the world map , yes it was Nureyev …..
then they kept coming …. Thank you for your divine dance ……. The world misses your perfection , grace , turns jumps but that perfect face and Fonteys only partner
We love you Rudolf
such a beautiful man!!
Rudik, sempre nei nostri cuori e nei nostri occhi !!!
