I was 8 years old in the mid 80’s. We could afford to buy newspaper only once a week. He was on one of those black and white pages, a picture after a show. I didn’t know what ballet was, art was not even the last thing we talked about in my family. As a kid I was mesmerised by his beauty. I cut his picture from the paper and kept it for many years. Since then I believe that he was an extraordinary person.
I'm pretty sure I said WOW more than 86 times. I remember watching him in the early seventies, simply awestruck at how long he floated in the air as he lept, I also remember now how sad I was that he died so young. Thanks for this beautiful tribute.
I was lucky enough to see him dance Albrecht in Giselle with Margot Fonteyn in Golders green theatre many years ago - and later in Romeo and Juliet live. The Fonteyn Nureyev Giselle was a hi-light of my life- together the partnership was unforgettable. He tore across the stage like a wild animal in parts- and nobody could take their eyes off him except when Margot danced, they equally magnetised the whole audience- magic, sheer magic- we cried at the end- we demanded more curtain calls than any other performance ever managed I think- unforgettable and so so beautiful a partnership.
No man changed my life as much. Saw him in Giselle in 1965. Got his autograph. Started dance lessons soon thereafter. Last night, 58 years later (5/8/2023), saw Cinderella in the eighth city I have seen ballet from Berlin to Manila. How I wanted to fly the way he did.

He had just recently been buried so the beautiful mosaic rug draping his tomb wasn't there yet. What a gift he was to those of us fortunate enough to see him dance. I miss him terribly.

Thank you for a most entertaining entry (I love alliteration!) and for the kind words as well. I saw him dance when I was honestly too young to really remember much about it. My grandmama brought me so I could one day say "I saw Nureyev dance" and I am beyond beholden to her. Thank you also for the new inspiring image you've set dancing 'round my grey matter. Upon a bit of pondering, I am now convinced that of all the atoms in all the world that make up those who dance, there are those whose atoms simply orbit, and then there are those whose particles prefer to waltz... and those wild, waltzing whirlwinds are the Nureyevs, the Baryshnikovs, and the Plisetskayas of this world. So, thank YOU Joe from Switzerland. =) Pam from Texas.
@@PamBoehmeSimon My very dear Pam, I am writing to you with the help of a translator because I only speak French correctly. My grandpa spoke Russian fluently. He was a professor at the court of the tsars, and taught French to the nobility, he had to flee during the Bolshevik revolution. He never got over it. He would have been killed if he had stayed. He loved life in Russia. He was a poet, he loved the arts, etc. ... Rudolf Nureyev, Maïa Plisetskaya, and a few others were figures that made a strong impression on me. Maïa Plisetskaya, I've never seen her dance in real life, only on video and before, on TV. As I am very fond of the late dancer Alexander Godunov, I like to see them both dancing. Rudolf Nureyev, my aunt who just passed away was a total fan. She lived on Long Island. She loved the world of dance and she took me to see Rudolf Nureyev dance a few times. Even if she adored him (that's the right word), she told me that in the end, he shouldn't have performed either at the Metropolitan Opera or elsewhere in New York, because it wasn't performing anymore. . Once he was even booed. On the other hand, she told me amusing anecdotes: once, it was a prima ballerina who was completely correct or completely wrong... and Rudolf Nureyev left the stage and never came back. She told me a lot about him. She saw him too much! This gave problems with her husband. Thanks to my grandmother and my aunt and godmother from the USA, I learned a lot about dance, ballet and practiced a little bit. Nothing special. It's fantastic your beautiful humor and that you like assonances, alliterations. I really like to play with words, etc. ... The trouble is that my English is poor. It only works well in French. Thank you very much for looking into my machine-translated writing... It must be special, but it's not as bad as 10 years ago. The automatic translator has improved. With total gratitude for your enchanted parenthesis. I release you because I am at extension :))😃🤩😍💫💓💞✨ I love your marvelous videos. Such beautiful "archives" ! With gratitude or gratefulness, Joe from Lausanne, Switzerland. All the best in Texas I really hope for you ❣
You said it all about this absolutely uniqye artist, dancer, innovator and great choreographer - World Phenomena Nureyev! The years pass by, but the unfading Star of his talent, burns brighter and brighter on the Pantheon of stars!
LOVED watching Nureyev through the years. He set the bar. Plus he had the physical attributes which added to the overall look of the performance. So glad there were so many recordings of his work.
Can I just say thank you, thank you, thank you. He’s always been my favorite, but I have never seen over half of those clips. You’re in dedication and devotion is highly highly appreciated, and may blessings of abundance, for all that you want, be showered upon you. I never even remember seeing him do a triple attitude turn, never mind a triple grande pirouette! I hope you are still stretching and maybe taking off those shoes to have a dance in the forest, to some beautiful Chopin every now and then.
Oh my, this is the loveliest comment. Thank YOU for such kind words, and especially for the sentiment at the bottom. I am so glad you enjoyed it and I'm am very happy to know I found some lesser known clips of this remarkable man. I often worry that I'm just rehashing old footage even though I do spend hours searching the internet for suitable, yet worthy material. Thank you again for watching and for taking the time to write so charmingly. You've put a spring in my step and a smile on my face. =)
@@PamBoehmeSimon My ballet teacher, who sent me to RBS and company, is “Pam” too, with your same hair color, exactly. She was obsessed with Nureyev, and would watch him rehearse in the Covent Garden studio at Baron’s Court. I used to watch Sylvie practice in the same studio, when I wasn’t in class!
Thank you Pam for this extraordinary vid. Just reading Rudi's biography (Julie Kavanagh) - Rudi was dance and dance was Rudi - what incredible passion which is how, (in my opinion) Sergei excels, to a place that speaks to the soul ❤️
@@PamBoehmeSimon I think of the countless hours and pain (physical, professional and personal) Rudi and Sergei endure(d) to provide a glimpse of the sublime, and for me at least , a glance away from the mundane and my own concrete feet. Truly appreciate your vids Pam. ❤️
Thank YOU for such a lovely comment. It was my pleasure to be sure. I am just in awe of him and am thrilled that so many of his fans appreciate my video tribute to him. I wanted to make one for years now and was worried it wouldn't do him justice. It was my fondest wish to honor him and kind comments like yours do much to ease my concerns. Thanks again, and big hugs from Texas.
@@PamBoehmeSimon I understand completely! I just finished a short book about Nijinsky from a spiritual perspective (as opposed to only historical) and I just keep hoping he will be happy with my efforts. I was fortunate enough to see Nureyev three times in the late 70s. His Presence hit the audience like a physical wave of charisma when he entered the stage - I will never forget that experience (Le Spectre, Petruchka, and Faune were on one program!!). He and Nijinsky are both very special to me. Thank you again for sharing your passion so eloquently.
All the chills. Almost unworldly. Never surpassed. Another compilation that will be required viewing the world over. And this one must have taken ages, to find this precious film. Pam, you are a marvel! Thank you!
I can not possibly thank you enough for your gracious comment. I am truly humbled. It is honestly my pleasure to make these videos. I enjoy every second of their creation. In fact, that's why I started making them, for my own sanity. After being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, so many things suddenly made sense (i had been a ballet dancer for my whole life)... why I no longer had any sense of balance, where my control had disappeared to, why a single turn sent the entire planet spinning, why my once flexible muscles had stiffened, why everything I had worked so hard to attain was becoming impossible... why my entire body was betraying me. I had to find something creative to do that involved no moving and one day after opening a video editor app, it hit me. I could "choreograph" via pixels! I made one silly little video and was overjoyed. So I made more. I uploaded them to my old unused TH-cam channel just to have somewhere to keep them. No one was more surprised than I when OTHER PEOPLE started watching them lol. And, here we are today. So, truly it is my pleasure, but the frosting on the whole cake has been people like you, who have been so supportive and so nice, and who have made this the best, most absolutely unexpected adventure I could have ever dreamed of. Thank you again, more than you could possibly know. Thank you. And, huge hugs from Texas. Take care.
@@PamBoehmeSimon I can't even begin to imagine what you're going through. I fervently hope that things will get better. And the manner in you've decided to spend some of your talents, on your better days, are creating art that will last forever. There are worse legacies.
@@lburgess63 Thank you, thank you so much, for your kind words and a truly comforting thought. I had not clearly envisioned that what I'm doing now is maybe not the end of something I lived and loved, but just the next part of what I am to do. How humbling, and wonderful, to think that something I create could do such a thing. And I love it. I love it. This thought. Thank you over and over. Your words have rubbed a clear spot on a window in front of me that was fast becoming smudged and hard to see through. What an honor it would be to even in the smallest way help propagate love and appreciation for ballet and ballet dancers. To help keep alive the legends of our art. To ensure dancers like Nureyev and Baryshnikov are never forgotten by leaving little trails of what they did so that others may find the path to know them. That is not settling... that is soaring. And soaring IS dancing. I owe you big time for this fresh outlook... Thank you for commenting in the first place, thank you for writing back... just, thank you.
Isn't he just beautiful?! I must admit, even though I saw him dance as a VERY young child, I was never as smitten with him as I am now that I've researched his story and career in depth. He is remarkable and amazing. Everything about him is sheer perfection. So glad you enjoyed my video tribute. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to write. Big hugs from Texas. =)

I always loved ballet from being a little girl in 1960s, but wasnt good enough to become professional. Rudy was by far my favourite to watch though. When I was a student nurse in the 1970s in UK, I had a glorious poster of Rudy in full flight on the wall of my bedroom in the nurses home. (We had to "live in" in those days, but Rudy kept me very happy). Thank you for this fabulous tribute. I dont think there is anyone to compare especially when you think how systems of training are different now. He was a natural, a tiger, and yet so graceful. What a guy. 🇬🇧👏👏👌

Nureyev, what can I still say. He was fabulous, great, strong, wonderful. I'm so happy I saw him in Swan Lake. I'll never forget as long as I live. This man danced unbelievable.......
Thank you for the videos Miss Pam. Your videos of Sergei doing the 540 inspired me to do ballet again. I got made fun by other boys sometimes for doing it. But I think ballet is one of the hardest things ever. 👍
Oh, thank you for such a wonderful, uplifting comment!! I am so glad to hear this. PLEASE keep the good fight... you are right about ballet being the hardest thing ever, but it is oh so worth every second of struggle and pain. Those moments when we are able to use what we've worked for and dance, we can lose ourselves in the the ecstacy that follows all that agony and we truly know what it is to fly!!
Merci Rudi! I saw him dance in Don Quixote at the Paris Opera House on New Year's Eve 1982! It was fabulous! He was so beautiful and his phrasing was supported by exquisite control. His partners were beautiful too. You would have to be to dance with him. Thank you for posting this. I forgot how fortunate I was to see him.
I saw him dance with Margot Fonteyn: perfection! Twice more I had the thrill of seeing him dance; he flew, and stopped mid air when he jumped. Awe inspiring! I’m 80 now and these performances are treasured memories. Thank you for the post.

@@irinadavidofflavrentyeva798 You summarize very wisely ! thank you
LOVED watching Nureyev through the years. He set the bar. Plus he had the physical attributes which added to the overall look of the performance. So glad there were so many recordings of his work.
MAGNIFICENT TRIBUTE TO THE GREAT NUREYEV. THANK YOU DEEPLY.

How beautiful!❤
He was such a force of nature. Thank you for this video.
Dear, dear Rudolph what a fabulous dancer you were.
God bless!
He was a brilliant dancer! R. I. P. 🙏 ❣ Tahnk you, Rudi
Oh, my... Rudolf... thank U for your art.
Thank U for this video 💖
Thank you Pam for this extraordinary vid. Just reading Rudi's biography (Julie Kavanagh) - Rudi was dance and dance was Rudi - what incredible passion which is how, (in my opinion) Sergei excels, to a place that speaks to the soul ❤️
Thank YOU for such a thoughtful comment. Well said.
Beautifull and Great Rudy!🌷
Glad you liked it dear Ema
what an excellent compilation and reminder of how great he was - and how beautiful. thank you....💕🌹
Thank YOU for such a lovely comment.
Bello ed elegantissimo:
Stunning!!! Bravo!!!!
Take care.
@@PamBoehmeSimon what a wildly amazing story. And what an amazing outlook! Really inspiring! Thank you very much Pam
Thank you for commenting in the first place, thank you for writing back... just, thank you.

this video took my breath away, what a wonderful dancer and such a handsome face and body💗💗💗
@@PamBoehmeSimon me too very young child, BUT my mother would just talk about him many times she loved ballet, she would talk about his beauty many times, now as im older I am on my feet as well, he was just one of those people with such charm and beauty both women and men just look what he did in quiet awe.
Thank you for replying, it is a beautiful video of his work.

Una gioia per gli occhi. Meraviglioso!!!
Thanks for posting this. I've just had a trip down memory lane. I was lucky enough to see Rudi dance 5 times. Twice in Oz and 3 times in London. Man he had charisma. You could not drag your eyes off him.
Oh WOW what a wonderful thing to be able to say. I saw him once, and I was really too young to remember much, but my grandmother wanted me to be able to say I saw him lol. So she took me. I treasure what I do remember as well as my program with his name in it. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences.
Mary, you and I were probably enjoying the same performance. I think he only came to Sydney once and danced for two nights now I think of it. And yes I could not drag my eyes off of him either.

so lucky to have seen him dance a few times in person... amazing, wonderful ,incredible... there is no-one to compare with his technique and grace....
What an incredible contribution Rudolf Nureyev made to the world of dance. Timeless!
Wonderful... Forever.. Thanks
What a guy. 🇬🇧👏👏👌
Love, love, love your description of him... truly. Thank you very much for writing. =)
What a dancer!!! Energy, perfect technique, elegance and charm, he had everything. Thank you Pam for sharing this and I like the music. ❤️

Thank YOU
Thank you for your well thought out comment and kind words. I absolutely agree with you.
How is such perfection possible!
Si può sempre sognare… 🙂💖🌹
