any updates on that noise mine just started, I thought it might be a dropped bold between radiator and fan

Been searching for this sound. My GL1800 sounds like that while idling. However, it smooths out once I get going. Are my valves going out? What was the final diagnosis of this bike?

Did it ever start out sounding like a loose valve? Regular-interval light tapping? I just picked up a 2005 Wing that sounds like it has a loose valve, except that the sound seems to come more from the alternator area than the valve covers. The goldwing sounds like my old DR650 and Moto Guzzi, but I don't know if goldwings have valve-train noise at idle ?

mine sounds just like that. ended up being the alternator

You are lucky. It's the alternator drive gear (ADG) that's the culprit. The springs inside the damper lose tolerance and wear away at the inner gear casing. It is drivable but the engine has to come out to do the repair.

just the alternator or the drive gear?

Trust me that's not the answer, I've been down that road, with a brand new 06 Electra Glide, out of all the bikes I've owned it was the very worst, The bike was no use to me setting at the dealer all the time with the steering and the ignition switch locked and could not be unlocked, hell Harley could not even change the oil and get that right, the service was the absolute worst, oh and that American built bike they call it, you might want check on the back of all the original HD parts you buy and see where they are built, how about Taiwan, lets be honest it's built over seas and assembled in the good old USA, however I will say if there really was an American built bike it really would be the absolute best bike in the world.

I rented a brand new Roadglide in 2017, had about 6000 miles on it. I road 22 hours straight 1126 miles. It rode like a dream I was sold on Harley's for a minute. When I returned it to the dealer they had a 2015 Roadglide with 40k on it for sale, $18k. I test road it that same morning and the bike felt like it was shot. I literally got off of a brand new bike onto the exact same, 2 year earlier model. I was far from impressed. Everything felt loose and rattled, it handled bad, the engine didn't didn't respond as good. The bike felt like it was shot compared to the brand new one. Harley's are over priced and they aren't built to last.
