Housetraining 101

  • This video is on housetraining puppies and dogs. It covers teaching a dog where you want him to go to the bathroom, how to teach a cue to go to the bathroom, managing the dog in the house, what to do if your dog goes to the toilet in the house, pros and cons of using a litter box for separation training, how to set up a pen with a litter box, setting up a pen or litter box for a dog who is peeing and pooping everywhere.
    Housetraining consists of essentially 2 things:
    1 Teaching the puppy where to go
    2 Management and prevention
    Tips- If your puppy does pee in the house, hang out in area that was peed on, train and play with your puppy on that spot after it has been cleaned and dried, put a bed over it (if your puppy doesn’t like to pee in his bed) or a food or water bowl there telling them this is not a toilet! It’s the den!
    When the puppy has a FULL bladder, have them on leash in the area that they are prone to want to go in the house and say “outside” and show him the route to the RIGHT location. Some dogs just don’t seem to get that when they are upstairs they should go all the way down the stairs to out the door. By showing him the way, he will be more likely to think of it on his own.
    Some puppies need to pee twice in a row. So if you are blessed with a puppy like this, you must praise and reward for going to the bathroom and then wait another minute. With a previous puppy I helped raise, we would walk him to one area in the yard where he would pee, then walk him to a second area where he would pee again 30 seconds later.
    Some people find that bringing the puppy in and then going directly out again if a puppy is taking forever to go to the bathroom can speed up the process if you have a puppy that won’t go outside, but immediately wants to go when inside the house again.
    Litter box training:
    The key is taking the dog out so frequently and strategically that they don’t even go in their litter. Once the dog is reliably not going in the box the box can be removed. But it’s nice I think to have it for times where you are gone longer than normal or when say the dog might end up having a bladder infection.

    i can confirm that following this advice works 100%. my pup never had an accident in the house and doesn't even go in the yard. i did everything as explained in the video. it might seem excessive to monitor the dog so intensely, and it sure was a pain in the ass, but it definitely works and saves u and ur pet stress in the future!

    I will most definitely come back to watch and "study" this video. I will be critter sitting soon for four days and later for two weeks. Two of the dogs (males) look like Shi Tzu mix. They get to come in the large "sun room" in the evening and overnight (they sleep in nice large crates at night). While they are allowed to be out of their crates until bedtime they will relieve themselves as the urge hits them. I am hoping to stop this with lots of kindness and consistency. It will probably work better during the two weeks. I am so excited that you uploaded this now! Great timing and I am certain great instruction. Thank you so much Emily!

    Really appreciate the information about both outside training and indoor training. Also where to place the pee pads inside the pen. I'm getting a puppy in early November and this has been a concern of mine. My house is configured with my kitchen, family room, and master bedroom upstairs. This is where I spend most of my time and where I'll have the pen. I plan to take a month off work so I can work with her training. My worry with doing only outside training is that I have to go down the stairs and then through the width of the ground floor to the front door where the yard is. I'm not as young as I once was and so can't just pick her up and dash out the house quickly if she starts to have an accident. So the idea of focusing primarily on outdoor but also having an indoor potty place is really helpful.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no I havent really I guess it really depends on the puppies personality and the household. I mean if you have young children and an overly excitable mouthy puppy for example the first 24 hours you would focus on that... or if you had a shy puppy, that was worried about you... you'd be working on that... th-cam.com/video/YF7boyICV7M/w-d-xo.html

    Thank you for this video! I’m 36 and just got a puppy (never had a dog before in my life) and was clueless. This is wonderful advice and direction.
    I do have a question, how do you teach your puppy to signal that they need to go?
    She will walk to the door, but doesnt whine, bark, or scratch. She just stands in front of the door silently. It’s ok while we’re all diligently watching her, but our house is typically full of loud activity (6 kids)

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suggest taking her out frequently then she doesn’t need to ask. If you’re desperate to get her to offer some behavior you can then say “do you need to go out?“ excite her a little saying it a couple times then call her to you and ask her to do the behavior
      You want for her to tell you, like just coming over, or touching you or whatever. Then go
      Let her out

    I have a puppy that's 5 months old now and we're trying to give him a little more freedom around the house. He's had a few more accidents since we decided to try to give him more freedom because we didn't initially follow him nonstop (we do so now, continuing what we used to do). He hasn't ever shown any sort of cue for when he needs to go (his butt puckers when he needs to poo), so we've just been keeping him on a every 2 hour schedule, but we're wondering on average how long this *constant* supervision needs to occur.

    Hi! I know that it is an old video but is it possible to do a combination of indoor and outdoor potty training or would it confuse the dog?

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not at all. A lot of people like having an indoor toilet for their dog so that when they are at work the dog doesnt have to hold it until the owner returns. I actually use an indoor toilet for puppies when they are in their pen and build the outside as a good place to go every hour and the dogs always prefer waiting to go outside than using the indoor toilet. I suggest keeping the toilet in a very obvious location like inside a pen or inside a literbox, sometimes dogs wont pee where they poop and vice versa so you need to make sure the area is large enough for both.

    We have our golden puppy for 2 weeks now and we have a part in the backyard that has a pen. We put pup there to potty and we do praise after he poop and pee but somehow, when we go play outside with him at the backyard, he just pees everywhere and he doesn’t go inside the pen. What gives?

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suggest keep taking him to the pen to pee and poop before playing. And when he starts to look like hes going you can call him saying "pup pup pup!" and run to the place you want him to go. Some puppies take time before they can hold their bladders and will just go. They are also the equivalent of young babies and toddlers so they wont do exactly what you hope they will do. Just keep reinforcing what you do want your puppy to do and interrupting kindly and preventing what you dont. But the key really is on showing our learners what TO DO and reinforce that.

    Lovely! Very thorough. I love the idea of circling outdoors. That also gives the waiting human something to do instead of just trying to be patient. The human peeing can also help if you aren't grossed out or in danger of indecency charges haha. (A tiny dab onto a pee pad saved my sanity in a hotel recently when we needed to switch to indoor peeing fast after being out of practice with pee pads.) We had some overgeneralizing when we started litterboxes after moving climates and there are two large areas of carpet that have upside-down waterproof outdoor rugs (with the rubber bottoms up) that will be there until we can rip out the carpet and put in hard floors! I tried the Nature's Miracle, the feeding there and hanging out there, and the crates are even adjacent, but once that smell got into the carpet pad it was just too confusing. The texture of the rubber mat was a big enough change to stop them using the spots before my sweetie kicked us all out of his new house 😂

    Hi Emily! Thank you so much for these videos.
    I have a question- we’re in NYC trying to deal with a rescue puppy whose vaccinations got delayed and can’t go for walks. We don’t have a private outdoor area, and she is very easily excited by the smells/noises/people outside (we just stick to the sidewalk in front of our building). When I get her to sniff around, she’s usually just desperately looking for food and will pick up and eat leaves, sticks, paper, etc. or trying to say hello to every person walking past. I’ve tried the walking in circles, I praise and treat generously when she goes potty outside, I’ve tried using the attention noise to keep her focused, trying to incorporate the cue word... but really struggling.
    We’re working on using a pen inside, but at this point she finds it punishing to be closed in. We have pee pads in the house which she does use pretty well, but unfortunately she also uses a few different spots on our rugs (we always clean w/Nature’s Miracle.)
    Any advice for how to deal with an excitable pup with limited space and no option for privacy?

    I am picking up a 5 month puppy next week. He was with a owner from week 8+ of it's life & will only spend 5 days at the ASPCA. The owner gave up ownership. He is not potty trained. I am worried because he is getting nuetered the day before I am picking him up. The surgery, 2 hours of travel, and a new environment seem like a lot of stress for a young pup especially with the lack of potty training. Do you have any advice?

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He most likely will be on some pain killers. The surgery for male dogs is very non invasive so he will recover quickly. It will be ok :) I suggest just letting him rest but also taking him out every hour to see if he needs to pee.

    I 100% regret pee pads. They ruined my dog’s perception on where she can pee and she will pee on any pad-like object. Sadly, it took months for her to adjust to wearing a harness and going potty outside, so it felt like we had no choice but to use them. At least now she’s walkable and knows the grass outside is a potty spot. Just getting her to stop going inside altogether is a whole new hurdle.

Part of it is fearfulness as that area is fenced and I think it got used to doing its business in a cage to begin with. I am just not sure how to get it to pee and poop in other places. This is becoming really hard. My puppy is a 5mth rescue and she came to me peeing indoors. We have managed to train to go outside and it was going well until she had a bad experience with a friend's dog we tried introducing her to and now we have loads of training problems. This morning she refused to wait while I opened the door and peed at the door, then next time I asked if she wanted to go out and pee, she didn't came inside and instantly pee'd in the kitchen. When outside I will ask her to pee because she was using the que, she acts like she doesn't need to then I will trust her to go into someone's home and she pees on their carpet. I know she understands and is choosing to ignore me, its really stressful and just causing tension between us. Now if I try and confine her to the kitchen and porch for the training she thinks she is being punished and she constantly whines and yelps. We got off to such a great start training and this is ruining it. I can't trust her now, she knows myself and others are annoyed by her peeing indoors but she chooses to do it anyway....what now? Any help is appreciated, I'm gutted by the setback and exhausted cleaning her mess.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What tends to happen is that dogs have a preference of where to pee based on what surfaces they went to the toilet on and where as a puppy, because your puppy most likely has spent their entire life going to the toilet inside, its a strongly reinforced behavior and so is the "right behavior" to the dog and outside seems "wrong" so you have to keep treating the dog as though untrained. Imagine the puppy has "no training" and that the breeder was keeping the puppies inside. So take your pup out every hour to go, have your puppy in a pen with a toilet when you cant watch her, and when you do have her loose watch her 100% of the time. Assume she is 100% unhousetrained. When she does start to go in the house, just quickly run with her to the door to outside and say a cue like "outside", try not to get angry or frustrated as that can make it so that dogs dont want to go to the toilet when people are near so hard to get them to go outside when on leash. When outside, you can try a longer leash, some dogs are more likely to pee and poop in private than having to do it right next to the person they are with (not sure if that is your dogs issue though)

      They do tend to grow out of it, my terrier had the same interest as a puppy. And then as an adult was not interested. But I suggest timing the meals and training so you get a regular pooping schedule and then do a little exercise where the puppy moves fast like recall training or a walk or play, at the times when they might poop, or go on mini walks throughout the day as movement will stimulate going. And then you can be there when it happens for the moment and cue leave it and give her a treat for coming to you rather than going toward it.

    I'm getting an 8 weeks old puppy this weekend. I understand you want to take the dog out very often, like every hour. My question is: Should I still take out the puppy every hour even if it is sleeping?.. Should I wake up the puppy and take it outside so it has a lot of opportunities to go potty before an accident happens?.. or should I just wait for the puppy to wake up and then take it outside?..

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      thats a great question! I didnt think about nighttime when I said every hour. If you are sleeping next to the puppies pen or crate at night and wake easily, then just take the puppy out before bed. Then you can do a couple of different things. I myself just sleep until the puppy naturally wakes and some puppies sleep the whole night from day one. If they whine take them out to go. The other idea is setting an alarm for early in the morning and then setting it later and later each day.

If your neighbors are the type that vaccinate then there is reduced chance, but if you are walking him in a place where people might not vaccinate that is different. Here in san diego the wildlife carry more things, so I dont walk my dogs in wild areas until 10 days after the rabies vaccination but will bring them to parks. I keep my puppies on clean cement as well as lush fields of well watered grass at the parks and dont have them go to trees and things other dogs might have peed on. One thing you can do is put down a blanket and go chill at a bark with the puppy on it to socialize without exposure, or have the puppy in a back pack or baby stroller so he is being socialized to sights and sounds.

    I met a local trainer. She told me my dog is over protective of me, and that's why he is reactive. How can I stop him from being protective of me. I took him on a trail yesterday and he was growling and barking at anyone that came near me, and a dog who got in his face, but he didnt go after the dog until the dog looked at me.

      It's hard to know "why" dogs do what they do, but if you create a plan with an end goal of the dog feeling relaxed and comfortable with another dogs approach then it doesnt matter why the issue happened (be it over arousal, resource guarding, or perhaps learning from a prior incident) I wrote this protocol for resource guarding - dogmantics.com/resource-guarding-protocol/

    Great video, as always.
    The potty surface/location re-training is also useful when you move house, or travel with your dog.
    You mentioned fireworks. Do you have advice for dogs that are terrified of fireworks or thunderstorms (besides Thundershirts)?

      What do you think of using a bell (we used to hang one on the doorknob) that the dog can ring with her paw or nose to alert the humans that she has to go potty?

      I suggest working on a bunch of different sounds you can control like in this video first - th-cam.com/video/pkHuLK5UyAI/w-d-xo.html

      @@beachgirl4583 I think that is a great idea. Unless your dog starts to use it to get your attention. Because I have 5, it would be a little exhausting taking them all out when any of the 5 wanted to go, so I like to take my dogs out BEFORE they think they need to go, so when I wake up, after breakfast, then they get a walk later after I have done some work, then a a couple times midday(maybe a second walk), then before after dinner and then before bed. So they never really need to tell me unless they have an issue, and all my dogs have a way of telling me to go out, some will go stand by the door, others will try to get my attention then go to the door. But say if you didnt have your dog go upstairs a bell would be great for a dog to be able to say he needs to go out.

    Great tips. Good to learn to use peepads and lawn and look out for rugs that are similar to rugs or grass, lol, we have had that issue.
