  • This video is on the topic of teaching your dog to calmly settle and relax either on a verbal cue or a situational cue, for example if you sit in a chair at a cafe or you stand and talk to your neighbor.
    This video explains why teaching the calm settle is beneficial for you and your dog. It is the number one exercise I work on with all my clients.

    There are hundreds, if not thousands, of dog training videos on TH-cam and just as many trainers; I criticize none in simply saying that I like Kickopup very much. The presentation is not aggressive; it's informed, direct and her knowledge works. The emphasis is on the dog and the technique, not the trainer.

      Thanks very much. I think we learn best when given a choice too. I do have to say though that my videos might not be as entertainment oriented as much as other channels. I figure the people who need the information want to hear it not be entertained, and if someone wants entertainment there are lots of other options on youtube. That said I try to make my videos so they are not too long winded... And I have learned a lot over the years. But I continue to learn.

    Both the exercises and the games are very practical so dog owners may use them throughout the day to have a well-trained dog. There are training nuggets throughout, both in the step-by-step instructions th-cam.com/users/postUgkxfKlzfzw0sMZ_RgZNzMeOPu6d4b5i5XWl and the troubleshooting sections that will help enrich the lives of both dogs and their owners!

      You mean for naming a dog? You can build any name to be a recall, by reinforcing the behavior of running to you with something the dog wants. But some names are easier to say loud or excitedly than others. Also most dogs will naturally respond with interest and curiosity to high pitched voices so you can try using a higher pitch when you call your dog too.

    So glad I found your videos again! I remember watching a couple when I first got my pup and they were so helpful. I have a border terrier and he is awesome but gets absolutely frantic with treats... He's pretty fine on his own with one-on-one training, but if a stranger at the dog park is treating their dog he barges over and jumps up at them like he's never been fed before, even if I have our own treats on hand! Will definitely be working on this and trying to make treats less of a hysteria inducing thing for him. Thank you so much!

      Have someone walk him or have him outside with music on, make his meal put it in the fridge or leave it at the back of a counter and then when hes calm, just casually and slowly place it on the floor for him. This will help to get the behavior started.

    Thanks so much for this. We made the mistake of starting with trick training with our puppy in the first month, and quickly realized how fast a situation can escalate when he gets frustrated and we get a full blown tantrum or the zoomies. Tried rewarding him just for settling down yesterday and it was such a good improvement. He calmed down much faster anytime he started getting overexcited or nippy and settled down with us. Discovered your channel from Dr. Pawfessor, and I'm so glad. Will definitely recommend you to newbie puppy owners (like me!) :-)

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh yay! Also sometimes the arousal and frustration is part of their personality, so they need calming down, while there are actually some super mellow puppies that you actually have to excite to get them interested in the food and training.

      Well, puppy classes are really hard for a trainer in 60 mins to help many people one on one and also try to teach new info. I have taught puppy classes and really the best thing about them is socializing and teaching puppies to simply relax or pay attention with distractions. Sure you can dabble in practicing your own skill while the trainer helps you, but the real learning of behaviors for the puppy is going to happen at home when he can concentrate properly.

    This is so helpful, thank you so much for this video! My dog is extremely fixated on food and I haven't gotten anywhere with my attempts to train her to settle down so far. She will just sit there all tensed up, making saliva puddles on the floor and get all panicky that she doesn't get the treat for half an hour or longer. I'll just grab a book, her mat and take her outside and give it another try in a distracting environment!

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I have found that using treats that are very moist can help a lot of dogs drool less when working for treats in general. There have been some exceptions to that and all have been Labradors so far who would drool even for a bowl of soup hehe. I bet you have a stellar recall though :) And I bet your food trumps any distraction in the environment... Some people dream for that. I always find that the thing that creates the training struggle is also the thing that is one of the dog's super powers in another sense.

    Thank you for all your helpful videos! I've watched most of them, and some of them multiple times. I had dogs growing up but they never learned more than a few basic commands. I'm getting my first dog (6 mo old rescue puppy) in a few weeks and I'm trying to absorb as much knowledge as I can! I think the capturing calmness and attention games will be hugely beneficial to our training; I had never heard of them before your channel.
    I also LOVE your philosophy on preventing behaviors you don't want to see and setting the dog up for success. I'm a teacher and the key to excellent classroom management is avoiding opportunities for the kids to misbehave! I watched some trainers that let their dogs misbehave for the camera and I lost a lot of respect for them. The poor dogs were so confused!
    I'm drawing so many connections between teaching kids and training dogs, and I think training a dog might actually end up benefiting my classroom management skills as well (our school is big on positive reinforcement with the kids, but it's not always implemented properly).
    Anyway thank you again for all the videos, they are going to be such a big help!

      As a trained childcare professional and mom to 6 dogs, you are so right!
      The more advanced training theories for childcare and the advanced training theories for dogs have a huge amount of overlap.
      I reinforce and shape my students as if they are dogs, and I teach my dogs consequences and choices as if they are children, and both are better behaved for it.

I've got one falling asleep at my feet in the 4th session, and the other one is asleep a couple of metres away in the same room. I crate trained them which has been amazing but when I started taking the 6 month old to therapy dog training classes I realised she doesn't settle in public very well. I've been wondering if it's even possible at all and here she is sleeping at my feet right now.

    Thanks for this. I got distracted while training this for my dog and forgot about it. lol Now she gets REALLY excited about food. Which is great for exciting training . . .but yeah. Not so great for evenings and 'soft' training. I will start working on this again. It'll be good for her and helpful for me. Things have been stressful lately and I haven't been able to do a lot of the 'normal' training we usually do. So this will give us something to do without stressing.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also have been struggling to train from being stressed. The thing I work on is balance exercises. I have balance balls, and I just have the dogs balance for treats or change positions from sit down stand. And it requires no mental skills for me. Dogs can get excited about food even if you work on the settle, sometimes the excitement can come back, its normal dont worry too much. When one sees a problem its just information on what to work on next. My terrier easily can get excited about food so its something I go back to working on from time to time.

    • @Elentarien
      @Elentarien 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. It sort of helps to know I'm not the only one struggling at keeping it up. Not that I wish this much stress on anyone else, but - it is nice not to be alone too! I like the balance balls idea! Don't have those, though, and I'm not positive my barrel of a dog could do it. But one thing I've been doing for 'training' is when we're on our walks, when we pass some long grasses and such, I'll throw a treat into the grass and tell her to 'find it'. She'll dive right in, tail wagging and spend several minutes audibly sniffing and snuffing around to find the treat. The longer the grass, the harder the game. (I actually had to dial it back from one area. The grass was just a bit too much for her to find anything. lol) She LOVES this game. I basically get to just stand there doing very little, except occasionally giving her 'hints' and within 4-5 rounds, she's more tired than she is from a normal walk. rotflol If I can add in some water, I've got one poofed pup who'll sleep the rest of the afternoon. Lazy training! But it keeps her happy.
      But yeah. I agree. It's good to train the calm and revisit as needed. I'll start back up. She's been doing better about self-settling during the day, so those will be good opportunities to get it rolling.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Elentarien That sounds a great game! :) Hehe I like lazy training. You can use couch cushions for balance. Also for some dogs it makes them less excited about the food because they are also concentrating on balancing.

    This is working a little with my puppy when shes not having zoomies, if shes having zoomies I distract her with a treat (since toys don't work) I hold a treat near her when im sitting down, and tell her to sit, then down onto the rug beside me and hold treat for a few seconds, if I repeat every 30 seconds or so for about 10 minutes she settles enough, and on rare occasions even naps but of course the second I stand or just make my armchair creak enough she wakes and is back to zoomies.

    I have a service dog that I have trained myself and you are one of my go to trainers on TH-cam. Your methods are amazing and so helpful and I have never trained a dog before. Do you have a video that references dog reactivity that you could reference for me? I had a surgery that has kept us separated for six weeks and with social distancing she has started becoming a little bit reactive and will occasionally bark and lunge. Thank you for your amazing content!

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awe that great my videos could be of help. For service dogs you can choose to not feed the treat between the paws but instead feed out of the palm of your hand. I should have mentioned that in the video if you go somewhere that it is inappropriate of course for the dog to eat the crumbs that happen to be on the floor between the paws like at a restaurant. How old is your dog? If you think its also due to a fear period such as the dog being around a year old 6-9 months or around 16 weeks its best to just avoid triggers and only have your dog meet the friends he loves and knows and the dog friends he loves and knows and no new experiences. If its not a fear period you could rule out a medical issue. Then I suggest doing training set ups with decoy dogs and people you can control. To set up for success and positive experiences. Trying to train your dog out and about you can have some success adn then suddenly go back a few steps when someone suddenly appears and then disappears before your dog has a chance to realize everything is ok.

    I have been trying this over the past week and have been about 20% successful. When I use low value treats, puppy smells it, gets offended, and runs away. When I use high value treats, half the time she gets up to eat it, the other half of the time she’s too sleepy to eat and walks away. I’m finding that even with my low success rate, it’s still helping and she’s finding herself relaxing more and more (excepts it’s almost always on the cold metal door frame where I don’t really want her to settle unless I’m there to make sure the door doesn’t close)

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can try the game sitting next to a pen or when out of the house too. Hmm... It sounds like shes the type that likes it cool. So probably wants to snooze on cool tiles etc. Not a warm mat.

    At 7:34 this is called "blanket training" in Swedish, where the dog recognizes the blanket or pad as a resting place.
