He tells of hanging a medieval crossbow from the rafter of his basement and cocking it with weights. 1200 lbs later, it cocked. To put this into perspective (Don't you love generally useless trivia?) a woman of about 120 lbs weight exerts a force of 1200 lbs/sq inch on her high heels. (Source, a linoleum mfg data book from about the 50's.). So extrapolating from that, each pound of draw would equal 10 lbs impact power- depending on the tip of the bolt. There is a story handed down about a crossbow bolt penetrating completely through the leg armor of a knight, through the saddle and horse, through the leg armor on the other side, and pinning the knight to a castle wall. Unverifiable story, but possible. (1200 lbs draw X 10 = 120,000 pounds of impact force concentrated in the tip of an arrow. Based on the weight concentration formula listed above.)
