    “I love sassy Diana.”
In that case I highly recommend her Golden Age run. It’s an acquired taste, but there are times she’s Spidey-levels of snarky.
If you want to continue this series, it’d be cool to explore the time Hippolyta became Wonder Woman and then went back to WWII and joined the JSA.

Dc should make a new comic called “Lois Lane ________ girlfriend” and every issue she gets married to different people every issue the blank would be filled in by the character that issue, as long as there’s not a giant cheese cake factory, I think it’ll be a fun comic series or mini / maxi series.

My issue with Wonder Woman these days is her being re-imagined as a fierce warrior eager to do battle. She was created a gentle soul and trying to change that goes against the foundation of her character. These stories of trying to replace Diana with a visceral harsh WW set the stage for DC re-writing Diana today. Classic WW = Modern Aphrodite, Current WW = Modern Ares/Athena.

    • @malleableconcrete
      @malleableconcrete ปีที่แล้ว +2

So much for on the job training. Greatly enjoyed this flashback to the alternate Wonder Women in the DC Universe. You should definitely cover Nubia, Wonder Woman's black sister. I have two issues of Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen (plus the first volume of Jack Kirby's Fourth World in hardcover--the prices shot up too fast), both of which I bought as a sandman fan. One had Jimmy meeting Lucifer that turned out to be a dream, and another that was not a dream in which Jimmy visited Asgard and became friends with Thor and tricked Loki. Obviously they had to be careful to make their versions not violate Marvel trademarks. DC's Thor had red hair like in the original stories. Interestingly, I just finished The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul by Douglas Adams, and it mentions Thor's hair being blond (Thor is a major character in the book), but when a book has no illustrations, there's no trademark violation.

    #250 stays the same.
#251 explores Orana's motivation more, along with her getting in over her head, setting up her eventual redemption, and getting diana back onto man's world.
#252 could have an accident caused by orana's misunderstanding of man's world where diana has to get involved and save her, potentially sacrificing herself, only for orana to grant her the wonder woman title and sacrifice herself instead.

A little bit of fun fact: That particular set of comics was also distributed by Whitman comics. They would be bagged and sold in department stores that normally did not carry comics. Now some of the Whitman comics are incredibly rare ( A batman one comes to mind) & along with that is incredibly expensive. These two issues are not that rare but eBay will try to claim they are, so as a collector, just be careful to not overpay for an allegedly rare Whitman comic.

It's funny, after your last Wonder Woman video, I was thinking about how both Bats and Supes got temporarily replaced around the same time. She got it easy though, they both had these massive arcs that left them physically broken, whereas Diana just sort of milled around in a jacket for a few issues. Of course, the flip side is that Knightfall and Death of Superman are classics, but most people are probably completely unaware that Diana also got the replacement treatment.

I liked this comic arc (is it an arc with just 2 issues) and wished that they had at least had her show up as WW in some other comic during that run. Maybe responding to a JLA signal or as a guest star in either Brave & Bold or DC Presents (especially with Batman getting to give his two cents on balancing violence with responsibility to lives). I especially wished she had teamed up some other substitute icon, like Sandman Superman or Guy Gardner (pre-obnoxious phase) so we could get a scene about the weight of filling a legends shoes. There's a lot left unanswered with the Orana story, especially the mysterious "plan" she and her friends seemed to have going... They really should've let it be a three-parter, with the astronaut stuff and Warhead left out. #250 would stay the same, showing Orana's ascension to the role of Wonder Woman. #251 would still cover her attempts to fit into Man's World and conflicts with Diana, but it would also give more background on why Orana wanted to be Wonder Woman to begin with and explain what she and her friends were up to. Those reveals would then fuel the plot of #252, likely necessitating Diana's intervention and eventual restoration to being Wonder Woman. Orana would either still die or, better yet, live to either humbly renounce her mysterious plan or else face its consequences. Sigh. Another missed opportunity...
Oh well. Maybe Superman will come flying in from space and find that Lois is the new Wonder Woman. 😊

Actually, I'm surprised that they didn't go for a longer time with Artemis as Wonder Woman. I get the creative team change-over, but both Knightfall and the Death Of Superman arcs took over a year to play out entirely, but Artemis gets just 10 months or so? If they did base Artemis on Orana, then this was a good concept to re-do in the post-Crisis era, unlike all the other re-dos that basically mucked the continuity back up, thus requiring Yet Another Crisis.
'Course now that you've then-and-now-ed this idea, you have even LESS excuse not to do the Superman Red/Superman Blue stories from both the Silver Age and the '90s! The latter will also pan into the whole "Electric Supeman" arc, which I'd also love to see detailed.

I seem to remember an even older story, though not a comic, but an episode of Superfriends. The Legion of Doom travels back in time to prevent the origins of Superman, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman. Superman's rocket is directed away from Earth, Luthor take Hal Jordan's place in meeting Abin Sur, and Cheetah (another red head? -I forget) wins the original contest to become Wonder Woman. Clearly, security was lax on Paradise Island. At least she didn't become the Green Luthor.
Not only was Orana's story not well fleshed out, but the art is inconsistent. Some pannels she'd drawn to look like Elizabeth Montgomery (Bewitched). Others, like Vick Lawrence (Carol Burnette Show). Weird.
To her credit, Diana never pulled rank when Orana trash talking her for staying in man's world. She may be the new WW, But Diana was still her Princess. Beyotch.
Steve Trevor lacks personal dynamic? That's a trope all by itself. While at least some effort was made to write female leads/love interests, male love interests were, well, cardboard. And these were written by men! To be fair, it ain't Shakespear.
I'd love to see a universe/timeline where these replacement characters (Azrael, Artemis, and the Supermen) kept their titles. Guess i'll have to settle for Elseworlds.
Poor Diana! Not only is Orana dead, but now that she's Wonder Woman again, there goes her career as an Astronaut! With no explanations to anyone...sigh.

That fan letter was fantastic: I’d love to see more of them.
I love the passion of fans; and how it can sometimes goes too far haha.
Also, I definitely look forward to seeing more Lois Lane/salty Superman (or “Saltman” as I will now refer to him) content: and if Lois just so happens to be marrying someone else- hopefully with Supes as the bitter best man, and it all goes terribly wrong, even better haha.

I have a soft spot for this run. I remember reading it as a little kid in one of those 'here are three comics in a plastic bag" marketing things. I do think it was pretty strong for the time period, but I'm biased because I think this was my first introduction to Wonder Woman. The details of the amazon contest were pretty interesting. I wonder if the contest details had been covered in that depth before.

wayyy back in the Golden Age Of Wonder Woman (pre-Crisis Earth 2), Queen Hippolyta left Paradise Island to impersonate Wonder Woman after the Magic Sphere revealed Diana would be in danger. this story most likely inspired John Byrne during his 90's run when he had Hippolyta assume the role of WW and go back in time to fight with the Justice Society.

Obviously there are as many Wonder Women as there are fans to imagine her exploits, but when it comes to moving pictures, yeah, Lynda's the man for the job! Gal Gadot is growing on me, though. Neither are particularly bad actors, but both have suffered terribly from bad writing, so it's hard to tell.

It's hard to find a fictional comic book society with more contradictions than Wonder Woman's Amazons. They're supposed to be this society that stayed away from mankind because of its violence, except that they're clearly a warrior society where everyone knows how to fight even though they're isolated and therefor, have no real enemies. And while some part of their rules has some democratic elements in them, it's still a monarchy where the queen has an awful lot of sway over her grown daughter.
I wish the comics dealt with this issue head-on. Diana is usually portrayed as a rebel but I have yet to read a comic that calls this so-called "Paradise island" for what it truly is: a mirage.

I mean I like the idea of wonder woman being a legacy title and many different women with the mantle at different times, sometimes with Diana walking away from the mantle or being deemed unworthy. Arcs with the different women who had the role done in a convergence style. I say bring them all in and maybe have them in different universes or dimensions or all acting as Wonder Woman at once but the title being shared

Wonder Woman passing the mantle isn't that big of a thing, is it? Neither is Superman, just the then small stint of Reign of the Supermen and Superman Connor Kent from future. But Batman on the other hand has the mantle passed around A LOT (Thomas Wayne, Azrael, Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, Jason Todd, Carrie Kelley, Damian Wayne, Helena Wayne..... probs more).
I'd love it if you did a vid on Diana's sis Nubia :)

Steve Gerber got a lot of flak in the 1970s (at least on the letters page) for his never-ending story arcs, especially in The Defenders. He wrote issues 20-29, 31-41, Giant-Size 3-5, and Annual #1. 31-40 and Annual #1 told one very convoluted story that was set up in #21. #20 was the end of a three-parter that started in Marvel Two-in-One #6-7, he did a Sons of the Serpent four-parter in 22-25, and brought back the Guardians of the Galaxy (who had appeared only once at the time) in Marvel Two-in-One 4-5, Giant-Size Defenders #5, and Defenders #26-29 (#30 was an incredibly cheesy Bill Mantlo fill-in). Only Giant-Size #3 and #4, and #41 told stories that could sort of be considered stand-alone (although #4 is pretty important to the #31-40 & Annual 1 story, and #41's pacing feels like it was intended to be something much longer that he was told to wrap up while still in the scripting.

Neptune? Very big mistake. Even when Aquaman used to say it.
Not just WW but the entire DC universe is basically built on the Greek mythology. So the names used for those gods must always be the Greek ones.
    PS
I loved when they actually went with Roman gods in the Earth 2 comic.

To be fair to the length of stories in the 70s; Comic book stores didn't exist yet or at least weren't wide spread and collecting even 2 consecutives from a newsstand was considered an annoyance by a lot of fans. It's literally why my dad stopped reading comic books.
