Trying to Drive The Oldest Operational Tractor On Our Farm (John Deere 4520) (Ep. 28)

- The farm begins its first steps in preparation for harvest which involves getting the corn heads out from storage. There is only one tractor on our farm that is capable of doing that... the ole trusty deere 4520. This tractor is the second oldest tractor that we own, and the oldest operational tractor. It is the perfect fit for the job. We also take down a very large tree with the hopes that we will farm more of the adjacent lot next season! After that is done, Andy attempts to take the 4520 for a ride ahead of a storm. To this day, Andy still doesn't understand the synchro transmission on the 4520, and he cannot quite get the tractor into full road gear. He messes with it for a while before he decides that it would be best to head home before the storm. This same storm caused MASSIVE damage in Iowa, with wind speeds north of 100mph. Please reach out to any friends and family in Iowa... they may need your help cleaning up. We wish them the best, and they will still probably have a higher corn average than Illinois (of course)! Thanks for watching!
Andy is a 6th generation farmer from Central Illinois. On this farm, Andy works alongside his father, Marty, his uncles, Chris and Jeff, and his sister, Katie, to grow corn and soybeans on some of the finest dirt in the world. Andy and his family are deeply rooted in the area, operating a large farm that traces it origins back into the 1800s. Although some tracts did not stand the test of time, Andy and his family still grow corn and soybeans on fields that have been in the family for longer than even the oldest members of the farm have been alive. We do, we have, and we always will take tremendous pride in calling this piece of paradise our home. Andy was a Bronze Tablet graduate of the University of Illinois in the field of Crop Sciences, following the same path as his father and late grandfather.
It would be misleading for Andy to claim that this life is one that came by chance; rather, as a member of two multi-generational farm families, it was simply in his blood. His passion for agriculture traces back to his early youth--some of his fondest, earliest memories being of days spent riding in the combine with his father and grandfather. Although his understanding of the lifestyle was much less complex in the beginning, the love he has for farming, and its industry has only appreciated through time. As this dream blossomed into adulthood, Andy now works relentlessly, and tirelessly, to chase his own dreams and to build a farming operation of his own alongside his family.
We, as a whole operation, are handymen, electricians, mechanics, landscapers, accountants, economists, caretakers, stewards, and, most importantly, farmers, and we take an incredible amount of pride in our work. There is no challenge too overwhelming, no situation too stressful, and no problem too difficult for us to take on, and we want to take you along with us. Welcome to our farm and welcome to our lives. You have the best seat in the house to watch the everyday chaos of farming unfold--we usually only get concerned when things aren't going wrong!

Thank the Lord the storm wasn’t bad and our thoughts and Prayers are with the Farmers hit by the bad storms! Thanks for sharing!!
Like I said, I was astonished when I saw the pictures.
I can’t believe there’s farmers like this 😂😂 hell we still farm with them
We didn’t even use them when I was growing up. They just can’t keep up with what we are trying to do.
Thank you for the video great tractor 🚜 my dad
had 4020 and the sound of the engine was incredible I love it
I always love when we get it out just for that reason -some pure, unfiltered exhaust and raw power!
I have had a lot of experience driving the old JD's with the Syncro-Range 8 speed transmission. It looked like you were shifting it correctly, but there could be a problem with the linkage to get to eighth gear. Probably just needs to be freed up. Road gear might not have been used for the last 40 years. Great old tractors. Thanks for sharing.
I figured I just didn't know what I was doing!
@@aTrippyFarmer they didn't work perfect when they were new.
synchro is easy
I loved the 20 series. We have a 4320 diesel and a 3020 diesel. I am 42 now and started out on these farming at around 10 or 11.
couple weeks ago Larson Farms youngest is watching his grandfather pull-start the '54 JD 70 diesel, which he says, he knows nothing about but is observant enough to say 'that's
the tractor that built this farm'. Watching your experience with the 4520 tells me that your situation is probably exactly that too
I know that the people that have the worst opinions of farming usually have the least experience. Thousands of operations were built upon generations of hard-work, selflessness, and dedication. I wish I could have a few conversations with my ancestors. Thanks for the comment!
Looks nice , I'm 38 and have been farming with ours since I was a kid , we only farm 1k acres though.
I know a lot of farms that still have a tractor of this series around. They are reliable and powerful for their size! Thanks for watching.
In Peoria,IL we got 60 mph winds at the airport, very little rain. Glad you guys missed the big show!
I just hope everyone can rebuild and stay positive.
That storm was crazy. Looks like 10 million acres of corn damaged/flattened. Tons of tree damage, still power out in some areas and today is Thursday. We had over 90 mph winds in Iowa City.
Hope you get your power back soon. The outages are supposedly still widespread!
@@aTrippyFarmer ,we have power! Thanks for thinking of us. Now Cedar Rapids is another world right now. They were hit along harder than the Iowa City area. That middle band really got hammered. Take care!
Great tractors !!
Nothing Runs Like a Deere!
Love your vibe
Sounds like we’re just vibing then! 👍🏻
I have never seen heads moved with a 3 point before (learned something new). I usually hop on the 4020 once per year to transport an auger and always struggle to get it into the high gear.. it is very touchy
Actually I’ve never seen it elsewhere either. Most people are more refined and store their heads on a cart. We don’t have to cart around 8 rows, so we never got any.
aTrippyFarmer we don’t have a cart for the 8 row either. We store ours on the combine 😂
You have to be at least 50 to know how shift 20 series tractors lol😂
I don't really get any opportunities to drive it! Dad always drove it for years, and it doesn't even leave the shed anymore...
I completely understand.
I was laughing at the video. Only because we grew up on 20 series and can shift them without looking or thinking about it
You get used to sifting it will be so simple. Thanks
Andy sound on this one is too low, thanks great video
Noted!
I put a lot of hours on a 4520. They are bulletproof only amateurs have trouble with the transmissions.
That may have put me at 1/2 hour total on that tractor. It was removed from any major jobs decades ago.
I grew up late 70’s early 80’s, farm on my man if you lucky enough too. Keep up the good content 👍
Thanks for watching!!
We owned in 1985 6030 4520 4010 3020 2030 2630 2040 4630. Tobacco western NC.
My oldest is a 1967 JD 5020 that has a 8630 engine... She's a smoker
You gotta appreciate the raw power of an unfiltered engine. I would love to see what today’s engine technology could do if we weren’t limited by EPA regulations. That may be for the best, but it would be neat.
Are you a lefty? I saw you pulling the cord on the saw lefty style!
I’m a righty, but I am not afraid to switch hands!
Normally your channel is insightful...your rip on the 4520 was painful. Have your dad help you out. Thanks for the videos. Be well all
I don’t know it all, unfortunately. That thing is twice my age, and I’ve never been taught how to drive it. It hasn’t seen a field in 40 years.
@ aTrippyFarmer
I hear you. I guess it is an opportunity for an inquiring mind to learn something new. Just ask, I know you are brave just because you were rocking jorts :) We have a 4010, and 2 4020s of similar vintage. Cool old stuff. Be well.
does it still have the original engine or has been replaced?
That’s a great question. I believe it is the original; although, they were notoriously troublesome engines.
The JD 4520 is that a powershift or a synchro shift, exactly? If u dont know ask ur dad he'll certainly know.
It’s a synchro. Very easy to tell if you look at the shifter.
Oh ok. To me in the video, it looked too long to be a synchro, looked more like powershift.
If it was a powershift, I don't believe that I would've been struggling to shift... hopefully.
@@aTrippyFarmer That was not a Power Shift. I have drove both.
I know! I was just saying that I’d hope I wouldn’t be struggling to operate a powershift.
