    most things have seeds and then they spread the seed to grow like acorn trees, corn kernels, watermelon seeds, the seeds inside bel peppers.. i never knew the seed pods are made by radishes, mine are only 4 inches tall (thats what she said! hehe)

  • @walesseedsovereignty9156
    @walesseedsovereignty9156 ปีที่แล้ว

    Radish plants cross pollinate. You need to isolate them from other radish varieties (or any other brassica) within a one mile radius. They are also outbreeders, so you need a minimum population size of 40 plants. This isn't the correct way to save radish seeds

    I never knew radishes could grow that tall! 😂 I have had people ask me about eating the unripe pods too.. seems like that's a thing!
    I learned today! Thank you!

    I never would've thought to test to make sure seeds would germinate before storing them away until next year. Such a good idea!

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks! I was mildly worried I was picking them too early, so that seemed like a good way to test that they were actually ready.

    Love saving radish seeds. You can get a lifetime supply in one year if you can stop the birds from eating them.

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Birds haven't bothered them yet as far as I've seen. Although pulling all the seeds out is tedious, I can handle it if I know I'll rarely have to do it haha!

      I don't have a bird problem. But I do have a kid problem😂 well me to! I like the pods more then the radish itself. Working in the garden today, I must have had more then 20 by now😄 Still plenty of daylight left🤔

    Oh my gosh I have found a fellow gardener that loves to grow her own seeds like I do I think growing my own radish seeds now for a couple years .Thank you so much I really do enjoy your channel and I know we’re going to be great buddies Isn’t it amazing that beautiful little flowers that are on the radish planned. Go look at my channel and look at all my beautiful seats coming from one carrots I have been doing updates every week . I’m trying to grow a food forest and every year I have plans coming back from year before ,I’ve have my lettuce coming back for a couple years now from past lettuce, I have Swiss chard and coming back for five years now . And of course my radishes have been coming back for several years to .I’m not very good at it yet but I’m sure I’m going to get a lot better as time goes on and I build my soil a better and richer .

      Nice to meet you! It looks like you have quite a lot going on in the garden. I'd love to start a food forest too, but since I'm not sure if I'm moving next year I haven't planted anything long term like that.
      I love your attitude too! We are always getting better over time as we keep trying. :)

      I was just growing one that broke (the stem) So it can still possibly be dried and harvested? According to the google Germans snack on the pods with beer but it may be a certain type of radish. Thanks

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the pods were fully developed, you could still dry them for seed. They are also edible no matter what variety you have. I have a whole video on ways to eat them if you're interested.

    New viewer and now subscribed based on this video.
    I haven't saved radish seeds before.
    I too have a radish jungle at the moment, but pods are all still green, still on the planted radish plant.
    Should I cut some branches off the plant and would they mature ok off the plant?

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the seeds aren't fully formed, they won't mature off the plant. I only cut branches off when I'm certain the seeds are fully formed and just need to dry out. If you're feeling unsure, you can definitely just leave the pods to dry on the plant itself to be absolutely sure you're getting mature seeds.

  • @cindys.w.8566
    @cindys.w.8566 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those green stems will not have mature seeds to regrow. You need to allow the pods to stay on the plant to mature and brown on its own. Those seeds from the green pods won't grow. PERIOD!

    What varieties do you collect seeds from? I've heard radishes are biennial but it sounds like you're collecting seeds just a few months after planting in the same season/year, which is why I'm asking lol I want to be planting those then lol
    (So far Cherry Belle is my favorite!)
    Thank you so much!!!!

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question! This one is a black spanish radish. Most common radish varieties are annual, with a few of the larger ones being biennial as you mentioned. You should be able to figure out which is which via google searches.

    Great video. I’m growing hydroponically indoors, and now I’m wondering about pollination. Will seeds form properly if I shake the flowers around the same way I would on a tomato plant? Also, I’m wondering how long it takes for the entire cycle of planting the seed, growing the radish, and waiting for the seed pods to be ready for harvest.

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think radishes work that way. They definitely need other plants to pollinate, but I'm not sure what the hand-pollination strategy would be for something like that. Sorry i can't be more helpful!

  • @chiarra644

    Do you just leave them in the soil to keep growing for the pods? Like carrots? My first time growing a garden, trying to save money on groceries and have fresh veggies all the time. And I love radishes. Can you eat the young pods right off the vine?

    • @AuxhartGardening

    I have 2 huge radish indoor growing for about 2.5 months now and no sign of flower.
    I wonder if it isn't warm enough at 65-70f, or if it just takes longer.
    The cherry belle hybrid I found in a pack is about 3" big. Was hoping to try and stabilize the cross.

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think its a combo of temp and day length that will stimulate a radish to go to flower, so if it's not warm enough that would likely be why it hasn't gone to seed yet.

  • @rick5653
    @rick5653 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you actually get nice size radishes? I’ve got all kinds of seed pods, but puny little specs of the radish. Does anybody know what went wrong?

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      So you won’t always get a good sized radish if they go to seed. Usually that’s what happens if you’ve planted them a little too late in the season and they go to seed before they can bulb up.

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can try bringing them in to dry. If it's only freezing and not also wet, I think the temp shouldn't matter a whole lot. Seeds survive freezing winters all the time, it's kinda what they're good at. The thing you gotta watch out for is moldy seeds if they stay damp.

  • @curtainwolf2958
    @curtainwolf2958 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    While you were testing the germination rates, did you have to rewet the paper towel at all in those three days, or does it stay damp enough? Also where did you store them while you waited?

    How many weeks/months after planting does the radish plant starts developing pods?

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends so much on the weather. The hotter it is the sooner it will happen. Fastest I've seen is like 2 months, but it could take up to 3-4.

    Hi...how is the easiest way to pick the seeds out of the mature pods?I have so many radishes and its so painfully time consuming to sit and pick out the seeds from each pod..thank you

      If you have a lot, you can try shaking them into large paper bags once fully dry. They tend to pop open very easily at that point. It won't be as efficient, but depending on the volume you need for replanting, you'll probably get plenty anyway.

    What type of radish are those?

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Black Spanish radish! They’re a winter radish and they’re a bit on the spicier side of radishes.
