- Rust effects can make our tank models look like they're actually made from metal. In most cases they need to be very subtle because otherwise the model would look like an abandoned vehicle. But that's exactly what I'm after with this one! So let's get crazy with rust spots and streaking effects!

results! All this and a sense of humour.....
I just think it's better to use each technique with more restrain and slowly build up the weathered paintjob.
Well, if my approach to chipping can be considered "restrained" :)

Martin....if that is your real name, the dusty area around the weld beads are the remains of flux. Probably more prominent on stick welding that have flux coating all around the rods. Heavy industry welding was my thing years ago. Hope this helps 😁

Great video Martin - best one so far (I think). Your approach to the streaking is very refined and controlled. Often, modellers (beginners in particular) start the rust process by slathering on so many new rust products that the final outcome starts to look like some type of orangey red thingy. I think that's where experience sets in. As you allude, rust application can be therapeutic but the trick is to know when to walk away.
Amen brother. I remember one of my friends doing exactly that when we were kids and his model looked like covered in ketchup.

Just awesome, I changed my plans for my E100 Flakpanzer, it will be an abandoned one now and tried out some of your techniques. Like weld seems, armor texture etc. Next step is painting I guess 😬.
I have a StuG lying about that hasn't been touched in 3 or 4 years, of which I am certain that I am missing quite some parts, I think I will make a small Diorama with it stuck in some water and heavily rusted and damaged.

It helps me get my painting right.....thanks for charing
I brush paint (as opposed to weathering) my models with Tamiya enamels and I've found that shaking the bottle and then dipping the tip of the brush in the little pool of paint in the cap of the bottle works quite well. If you run out of paint or it starts to dry you can always just put the cap back on and shake the bottle again to refresh your paint supply. Great work as always.
Yup I sometimes do this with AK and Ammo enamels. Nice trick when you need slightly thicker paint.

Just an fyi for dealing with welds. It depends on what type of weld it is. Some cause more flux to be in the weld which causes rust. If the welder is good, and no flux or slag is present, then it is less likely to rust. The typical rust spots would be on the outer edges next to the weld because they have to grind it to bare metal for the weld to work properly and then the rest of the bare metal will rust.

I'm only painting 1:285ish wargaming miniatures, so not a whole lot of room to apply the same effects, but still, very helpful to use at least the basic ideas of these techniques and it's always nice to see how different paints and hues work together!

The chipping just looks unfinished without at least some faint rust effects. Yet still it's a controversial technique but the effect just looks too good.

Mr metal Dark Iron can be help with big weld seams if you don't shake bottle very much before using.The grey/black sooty matt contrast works well against 'metal' pigment when buffed.

Awesome, once again. One might think you'd just about be done with the bloody thing by now ... but no. You keep on weathering, you keep on chipping, brushing and doing I don't what to call it sometimes. Every single time I think "now he's overdoing it, this won't be worth the effort". And ... yeah well, in the end you prove me wrong every single time. I will never be able to create anything even remotely close to the level of this Type 5 here, I neither have the skills nor the mindset for that - but I still love your videos. They are something like a 20 minute vacation, if that makes sense. Please keep them coming.

I get impressed how level of detail can be increased from one video to another all the time, and I say to myself like "i'm just a beginner, I will do just the easiest part of the paintjob this time and try all this stuff sometime later" but after seeing how much every new effect brings to the overall look... well, yeah, I'm gonna try it =)
Am I getting it correctly this is all about spreading well diluted 'rust' points around the chips made earlier? Just to be sure :)
Exactly, the chipping is essentially a 3-stage process. 1- light chips, 2- steel chips, 3- rust effects

Great video 👍 Quick question. Between each stage of this process from the chipping to the rust effects, are you applying a varnish/clearcoat layer at each stage to protect the previous work? You're applying this thinner based rust effect over all your chipping from the previous video, so i'm assuming you've applied varnish/clearcoat over all the lovely chipping work you did to protect it?

Yes I've been using only oils for a long time. However I like enamels more now, they dry faster and I like the way they blend (it's slightly different to how oils blend)

What brushes do you use ? I can't find a good quality small brush like the one you use for chipping and what not. Please if you could tell me the name of the brushes so I can make a purchase it would be much appreciated!

I think he uses Vallejo but any kolinski sable brush is good for chipping. Get is small (000) and take good care of it (invest in some brush soap and conditioner) Da Vinci and Windsor and Newton are the most popular brands

Nice job. One question. Could you have done the same job without using Mig products ? Oil paints maybe ? This is not a criticism, just an alternative, cheaper way to do it.

Exactly, Mike is a great example. I also used oils exclusively in the past. Now I just like enamels because they dry faster, are pre-mixed so I can save the little time I have for this, and I like the way they blend.

What's REALLY NICE about these, is that they won't warp or melt from Solvents or glues like PLASTIC ones do! AND are VERY EASY To clean up!

It is an abandoned SU-152, after 70 years it's engine still roars! There's a 18 min video that shows alot of angles, that could really give you some inspirations for future abandoned or rusty models
