Scrape with an exacto knife blade. It makes a lot less of what you need and it’s easier to change the color.

I make my own iron oxide (RUST). I take about 4 rolls of 0000 steel wool and put them a quart jar of white vinegar and set it in the kitchen window for about a month. After the steel wool forms rust, I pour the mixture into a large pan (I use my old darkroom 11"x14" stainless trays for fixing photos) or a shallow baking dish. After about 2 to 3 weeks when the mixture completely dries, I use a single edge razor blade to pulverize the contents into a fine powder and store it in little snuff tins until ready for use. Every batch I've made comes out a little different colour. Since I model HO scale, I never use any weathering powders; instead I go to the dollar store and buy women's makeup in the little plastic cases. For $1.00 you can get quite an assortment of colours and they adhere better than any chalks (pastels) or weathering powder. Of course you still have to fix the model with flat lacquer (I usually use Dullcote), I also buy white chalk and crush it up and use acrylic paint or food colouring to get the colours I want. My rust looks real, well, 'cause it's REAL RUST! Cheers from W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee

There's also the actual rust option, using metallic paint with metal pigment in it, then using a salt water solution
to get it to begin rusting where you want it to, then once it's reached the right amount, dry it and seal it with a clear coat.
Takes the longest since depending how much you want it could take several days or longer, but looks the more real since it is.

In mathematics and computer science, an algorithm (/ˈælɡərɪðəm/ (audio speaker iconlisten)) is a finite sequence of well-defined instructions, typically used to solve a class of specific problems or to perform a computation.[1] Algorithms are used as specifications for performing calculations and data processing. By making use of Artificial Intelligence, algorithms can perform automated deductions (referred to as automated reasoning) and use mathematical and logical tests to divert the code through various routes (referred to as automated decision-making). Using human characteristics as descriptors of machines in metaphorical ways was already practiced by Alan Turing with terms such as "memory", "search" and "stimulus".[2], bill.

Hi, watching in Toronto and found you via The Craftsman. Really enjoyed this as I have Triang/Hornby Railways and I am familiar with many of these methods whether it from my trains or watercolour painting using the masking fluid or salt technique.
I scrape off the powder, use a cotton pad mixed with talcum powder and apply it to my car sketches which sometimes give a nice effect.
Use the powders on my trains, fences, buildings etc in an effort to weather.
Would like to see you do this on a model railway. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️

I believe that for the toothbrush part of the salt method it works better if the brush is moist. Also worthy of mention is the sponge method, basically the paint method but using a sponge to apply the rusty colors, looks more random and "natural"
Edit: Fixed the overabundance of "sponge", clearly needed more coffee :P

    1. Paint the item in undercoat. Let dry.
    2. Paint orange/brown colour all over. Let dry.
    3. Spray on extra hold hairspray. Let dry.
    4. Paint top coat colour. Let dry.

Don’t see why this isn’t one of your most popular videos. Maybe cause it was an earlier one? It’s certainly one of my favourites. Those panels… 🤤
I’ve seen most of the other episodes, I don’t know why I didn’t find it until now. Algorithm? Can you tag it somehow to up the hits? #weathering #weatheringporn
    Anyhow, more please!

You know I did actually watch this when you put it out and didn't have anything interesting to say, but since you said it didn't get enough love... Your rust is second to none Bill, don't let anyone make you think any different!

Came to see the rust, but was not rushed. The powders were pushed until we were bushed. The fluid was masked without being asked. Cracking effects all...well, I guess chipped and rusted, really. All in all I rate this 10/10, would rust again. Cheers!
