This was so fun! Loved hearing your thoughts across all the subgenres and I feel pretty similar about a lot of these, except I’m a sucker for all monster movies. I’d love to see a tier list about scariest scenes in horror.
Thank you! Ooo that sounds like a fun one, definitely writing it down!
@Caitlyn Carvalho That could fit into one of the listed subgenres, like "Supernatural" or "Folk & Mythology".
Good idea, I think a tier list for long-running horror franchises could also be pretty good.
@@ImpressionBlend my list of the best 70s horror movies 1 the exorcist 2 the hills have eyes 3 Texas chainsaw massacre 4 cannibal holocaust 😊
For gothic horror movies I would also add:
The Others (2001)
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)
The Innocents (1961)
The Devil’s Backbone (2001)
cosmic horror is also an amazing sub genre but apparently it is hard to make, only few movies stand out
Yea, sadly, there are very few movies made in that sub-genre. Would love to see it done well one of these days!
@@ImpressionBlend Difficult to pull off since it relies a lot on phenomena that are literally unimaginable (and thus hard to do visually), as well as a lot of verbose explanations of the significance of some eldritch item or the way a character (failing to process what is happening) descends into incoherent madness. That said it HAS been done well many times. Maybe not direct Cthulhu or Lovecraft adaptations but stuff from Carpenter (Mouth of Madness, Prince of Darkness), King, et al. The Mist (film) was a good example of ‘localized’ cosmic horror, and even Stranger Things’ Upside Down borrows heavily from the cosmic horror genre.
I think the secret lies in developing compelling characters and creating the right sort of atmosphere (especially the musical score), and NOT in trying to show the “monsters” very much if at all. Sure, that will frustrate a lot of fans, especially the creature-feature type, but it’s the only way to really build the existential dread necessary to make it work. Any actual gods/monsters that moviemakers can imagine is almost by definition not shocking enough. Films like The Thing and In The Mouth of Madness get around the problem by focusing on the *insanity* part and not necessarily the incomprehensible beings that exist behind the curtain. In books it’s much easier because a skilled writer can hint at things without actually describing them in detail - the human mind is quite capable of filling in the rest!
Event horizon?
@@RumitheBartenderevent horizon devours loved that movie
Not a movie, but Bloodborne is as close to an HP Lovecraft world we may ever get
An Asylum horror I would recommend is Session 9 (2001) because it is super atmospheric and takes place in huge abandoned asylum. There are some truly creepy , panic inducing moments in this film. I would consider this one a hidden gem. A cannibal horror film I thought was pretty intense was Ravenous (1999) starring Guy Pearce, Robert Carlyle, and David Arquette. It's set in the 19th century American frontier and is about a remote military outpost that encounters a vicious and cunning stranger who turns out to be a cannibal. The ensuing fight for survival is brutal as the killer stalks and kills the men in the surrounding wilderness.
Agreed. Ironic that the image used is actually from Session 9. 😄
I don't think she liked Session 9. Probably why she used that image and put it at the bottom, lol!
I definitely need that 'top 25 psychological horror movies' list to drop asap. Thank you for another awesome video Marianna
Thank you for watching!
My OCD is upset you didn’t have 2 more sub genres. If I can offer one you don’t have listed, Animal Horror. Ghost and the Darkness, Burning Bright, Cujo, Backcountry, Piranha, Open Water, Arachnophobia, Crawl, the Grey. I wouldn’t classify these as creature movies. Nature is a far more frightening foe than Godzilla. Probably a lesser sub genre I’d have on my list would be Western Horror....Bone Tomahawk, Burrowers, Ravenous. All that said, love your take on all of this, and now I’m off to watch House at the End of Time, thanks for the rec.
Loved your video. I saw one other person mention it, but my favorite is Cosmic (or Lovecraftian, or Eldritch) Horror. Such as Color out of Space, In the Mouth of Madness, The Void or a new (and unfortunately mis marketed) The Empty Man. It would be interesting to know if you just felt they were slotted into other types.
Cosmic horror is amazing! If they do it right…can’t be corny at all. But yeah, definitely! ✨
Event Horizon

Just watched Spookyastronauts do a video about best and worst movies *of* different horror genres, so a little different. I love supernatural horror in general…and the gothic subgenre in particular. You named some great ones.
I might dive deeper into the specific sub-genres eventually, we'll see ))
@@ImpressionBlend Ooh that would be fun! ))
can't wait to watch it and see your opinion on horror sub genres! i love your videos, keep up the awesome work! hugs from portugal :D
Thank you so much! Hope you enjoy the video!
I really enjoyed this video, but how can you talk about comedy horror and not mention Shaun of the Dead? No mentions of An American Werewolf in London or The Howling? I get that a lot of werewolf flicks can have cheesy ‘man in suit’ vibes but these two are considered some of the best werewolf flicks ever made with top notch special effects! Also no mention of Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive which could either fit in the comedy or zombie sub genre. On a final note, there is a subgenre that you failed to mention completely, that being the giallo. It’s understandable why you didn’t include that subgenre as it basically died out decades ago, but it’s still worth a mention! Thanks again for the vid!
Gotta love a 30+ minute video from Marianna!
No Giallo (Italian) genre mentioned, check out Argento's Suspiria & Inferno or Phenomena. Pretty good invasion films: Panic Room, When A Stranger Calls and Wait Until Dark.
You know Marianna I'm old enough to never have imagined seeing a gleaming bright Ukrainian girl wearing a Texas Chain Saw Massacre T-Shirt featuring Leatherface.
Leatherface - a horror icon for all ages )))
@@ImpressionBlend And Hey! Cannibals! Just sayin'. I have a subgenre that includes Texas Chainsaw, some zombie films, Near Dark, Taxi Driver and much more. American Gothic Films... not to be confused with Gothic. To Kill A Mockingbird is also an American Gothic film, likewise The Road, Unforgiven, and Night of the Hunter. It's the dark vision of the American dream in decay. If they ever make Blood Meridian it will be right up there near the top of the list. Thanks Marianna great idea. I could list ten more subgenres. But hey I don't have anything to prove...
Glad you mentioned Woman in Black. That’s a Hammer film and deserves to be more popular than it is. I think part of the issue with Haunted House/Gothic Horror (which Woman in Black is both) is that people don’t watch them alone. At night. Where every normal house noise becomes a part of the thrill. I love being scared and that movie did it.
I'm actually shocked how underappreciated "Woman in Black" is - when I first saw the reviews I expected a complete mess, but ended up so pleasantly surprised.
@@ImpressionBlend not that anyone asked but I’m rooting for Hammer films making a comeback. Since they started up again they’ve done Let Me In, Wake Wood, Woman in Black 1&2, and The Lodge. I’m 50/50 with their recent films but I’m a huge Hammer Horror fan.
I am so happy you watched As Above, So Below again and liked it!! It's honestly ridiculously underappreciated
I just wanna say I absolutely love your channel and you inspire me to make my own videos. I've only uploaded 2 but I can't wait to make more and thank you for inspiring me!
Thank you so much! That's awesome you started your own channel, I'll make sure to check it out. Good luck with the videos!
Sorry for the double comment, but this one is for AFTER I've watched! I love this topic! Just seeing what this video was about earlier filled me with excitement, because one thing the Horror genre has in spades is sub-genres!! This video at 34:18 long still cannot cover them all - but these were excellent category breakdowns.
For most of them, I found myself picking the same tiers you went with. I feel like most people will fall that way, because what fills "Over It" is going to be the over saturation of the sub-genre. "Outbreak & Zombies" is a perfect example as there's just too many.
I feel if I were to make a Tier list with this category, I might either rename a tier or make a new tier called "Take a Step Back" for sub-genres that need to go away for a bit, so that they can come back in a big bad way later.
One sub-genre that I would've split out from another, like you did "Asylum" from "Psychological" is I would've separated "Cult" from "Folk & Mythology". For the purposes of time and how similar in theme they are, I see why those were combined, but I do feel "Cult" is a more specific flavor and there can be "Cult Horror" that isn't "Folk Horror". Like "Rosemary's Baby" I would label a Cult Horror, but not a Folk Horror.
Another sub-genre I would want to separate (just so I could put it in “Dying For More”) is “American Gothic". I feel "Gothic" and "American Gothic" have very unique flavors so separating them would make sense. "Gothic" I think more lush, foliage growing around intricately designed architecture. "American Gothic" is desolate and rural, run down - on a dried up farmland or a decaying bayou. Not the best examples, but "Gothic" I'd liken to "Flowers in the Attic" and "American Gothic" to several of the "Texas Chainsaw" films - particularly the opening halves.
The sub-genre I was surprised wasn't on this list was "Historical/Period Horror". Films like The VVitch are instead grouped into other categories, but I feel this would warrant a classification of its own.
A sub-genre however that I would add only to stick it into "Over It" is "Family Horror". I have noticed more horror films coming out where the fear of family is the central scare factor. Be it a family falling apart or the greatest threat is a family member, this is a sub-genre that just rarely seems to connect with me. This is highly subjective and I know that one reason for my lack of connection to these films is because I don't really have that element in my life. Or rather, my family is a very strong positive force in my life that it is hard for me to feel the horror when everything is unraveling.
There definitely is no shortage of sub-genres in horror, so again I think this video was great picking which ones you did. This could very well have been a two hour video. I also thank you for some movies I should move up on my queue list to watch sooner rather than later! ^_^
26:30 - Have you really not watched An American Werewolf in London (that's actually from that thumbnail)? The human to wolf transformation is probably one of the most unsettling things that I've seen on film.
Just to let you know, I finished rewatching and reenjoying your well constructed tier list, which has led me to add this comment.
Here are a few other horror sub genres to consider: *Apocalyptic* ("I Am Legend", "Snowpiercer", "The Road"), *Cosmic/Lovecraftian* ("Color Out of Space", "Jacob's Ladder", "Stalker", "The Mist"), *Dystopian* ("10 Cloverfield Lane", "No One Will Save You" [alien home invasion] "The Seventh Sign") *Lynchian* ("Eraserhead", "Mulholland Drive", "Lost Highway", "Twin Peaks: Firewalk with Me"), *Poe Inspired* ("The Black Cat", "The Pit & the Pendulum", "Tales of Terror") and *Mad Scientist* ("Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", "Frankenstein", "The Invisible Man", "Eyes Without a Face").
Would you classify "Don't Breathe" as belonging to the Home Invasion sub genre? If so, it is unique among them in that the chief intent of the intruders is not murderous (the sub genre is often said to have been "inspired" by the Mason Family killings) as is usual, but simply larcenous. I know you're not a fan of this sub genre- and I'm not ordinarily one either, but I think there are some very effective suspense scenes in this one.
Loved this tier list! Thanks for all the recommendations, I added several to my LB watchlist!
Ooh! Have you ever considered doing a video where you compare horror franchises' first films to their latest entries? I feel like it'd be cool to look at what tropes/aspects they really leaned into with the later films, and what iconic parts aren't even in the originals (ex: Jason and the hockey mask in Friday the 13th, since neither of them were in the first). Did they change for better or worse? Are they even recognizable as sequels/remakes to the first?
A new tier list!
Also will you bring back Weekly Blend?
I'm not sure, people didn't seem to have a ton of interest in them, but it was a good way to cover more movies, so we'll see?
@@ImpressionBlend I really enjoyed them, reminded me of Chris Stuckmanns QMRs
Thank you! This video was fantastic! I have lots to add to my watchlist!
So glad you enjoyed! Thank you!
Omg!!! I don’t normally comment on videos but when you mention psychological horrors and the trope “ it was all in my head” I bout blew it lmao because man do I hate that soooooo much had me avoiding that subgenre for a while good callout 🤣
rec is the only movie that truly terrified me as an adult.
Great video and there were several films I hadn't seen on this list like 'Upgrade'. I have four films for you that you may enjoy--they are all older except one. I make a point of searching constantly for strange underrated stuff--idk-haha. Starting with the newest: 'November' 2017(folk/fairy Tale Horror), 'Spider' 1991(Psychological sexual awaking horror), 'The Strange case of DrJekyll and Miss Osbourne' 1981, 'Symptoms' 1974--kind of slasher and psychological moody--love this one.
For the ultimate home invasion film, I can't reccomend the French film "Inside" from 2007 more. Martyrs came a year after this and those two movies really opened my eyes to French Horror.
wasn't there a recent one about being blind or something... it wasn't super good but like not bad
True, true...
French people can't make good horror movies. Raw was made by a Belgian director and Martyrs is just bad.
Beyond putting body horror higher, my tastes are pretty much the same.
I'd definitely recommend the first season of The Terror. Psychological, survival, with a touch of folk and mythology. Extremely underrated.
"The Terror" has been on my watchlist forever! Thanks for the reminder, need to finally watch it soon.
One of the first videos I saw from your channel was the Final Girls Tier List! It's so much fun
Hi from Brazil. I loved so much this video. You mentioned a lot of movies that I realy love.
It Follows is such a banger with a weird storyline with a haunting and beautiful soundtrack. There's really no other movies like this that I've seen.
I enjoyed your Horror sub-genre tier list and my favourite genre is Comedy Horror. When I was a child back in the 60's I remember the very first horror movie I watched was House of Wax (1953) with Vincent Price and with my favourite actor back in the '80s, Charles Bronson (his first). A few Aussie ones that I can think of that I really enjoyed are Wolf Creek, The Babadook, 100 Bloody Acres, Little Monsters, Dead Calm, The Snowtown Murders and Relic. I remember sneaking into the theatres to see The Exorcist (1973) (you had to be over 18 and it scared the shit out of me) and the famous Jaws (1975) which stopped me from going into the water. What about Evil Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, Friday the 13th, Halloween, An American Werewolf in London, The Shining, Black Sheep, Hostel and any horror movies that were done by Alfred Hitchock. Who could ever forget, I Spit on Your Grave, Basket Case, Bloodsucking Freaks, Brain Damage and finally, The Toxic Avenger. LOL
Great video!
My clear number one is space horror. Doesn't matter if it's good or bad, I will most likely enjoy it. Event Horizon (my favourite), four Alien movies, Pandorum, Life, Pitch Black, Supernova, Ghosts of Mars or even such a garbage film like Jason X (aka Friday the 13th in space) - I like them all.
As for the tier list suggestions, I would love to see your rating of all episodes of the Masters of Horror series (something similar to your Black Mirror tier list). However, I'm afraid it will be too niche for TH-cam.
7:32 for home invasion recommendations, I'd highly recommend Michael Haneke's "Funny Games". It's really good and worth a watch. The 90's original, not the early 2000's remake. It's very off putting because the home invaders are not scary people on the outside. They look like well-off people, the last people you'd expect to pull off a home invasion. It's really intense and very well made, and I'd highly recommend it to you!
taking notes of some movies I haven't watched, nice tier list!
The strangers is probably my fav home invasion horror movie. I remember seeing it in the theater when it came out. The scene that always gets me I when Liv Tyler is in the kitchen and the male killer is just standing behind her in the the background but you may not even know he's there if you aren't looking for him. It was just a chilling moment to realize that all the stuff the 3 killers do after that was all just to terrorize the couple because they already were able to get in and out of the house since the beginning. Just thinking about being in that situation is a horror in itself for me personally lol. I sometimes have an irrational fear of opening my blinds and there being someone just looking in staring at me at 3am in the morning lol.
Nice video here. I don't think about favorite or least favorite genres/subgenres much since I'm trying to remove my biases as I get older. I believe it's what will make me a better critic. That said, I think you hit best and worst very well here. Even with some disagreements, it's great listening to someone who's clearly passionate about what they're talking about.
When it comes to Found Footage horror, it really depends on the venue you watch it. I feel it works best when you actually find some creepy film on the weird part of TH-cam. But for theater releases, I really was freaked out by "Amber Alert" and "Megan is Missing."
+1 for Folk/Mythology, especially when it carries the trope of a cult or organization in which the villains are so powerful and overreaching, you can't run or hide from them. It's really scary when the character's family members are in on it. Really good ones I found were "Resolution" and "The Endless."
Analog Horror is a new subgenre, and I think "Skinamarink" was the only one to make it to the big screen so far. Sure, the movie was WAY too long for its content, lots of people hated it, but this genre takes childhood imagery and totally corrupts it. My suspicion is it will just become a fad and seem dated. But I don't know, SO much can be done with it.
Sci-Fi horror is a mixed bag for me. If it is too techno/military, I just don't feel the fear because the characters have training and equipment to better deal with the situation, even if bullets won't hurt the bad guy, I suspect the crew will find a way. "Alien" were a bunch of alcoholic space truckers with lousy flamethrowers, and that amplified a terrible situation, while I viewed "Aliens" to be more of an Action/Adventure film. I find horror is done best when the protagonist is an average person. It's even scarier when the protagonist is a BELOW average person. I really get a sense that the main character might not make it.
Great video! Love hearing your thoughts on these sub genres and I agree with a lot of what you said. About home invasion btw, would you consider David Fincher’s Panic Room a part of that sub genre? It’s obviously home invasion but I’m not sure I’d classify it as a horror movie. Pretty solid thriller though imo
My least fav is supernatural reveal towards the end.
My fav is supposed perfect family has a dark secret.
20:44 Yes, I enjoyed 'The Woman In Black' for its excellent dark, brooding atmosphere and any horror movies that take place during an historical era (like the Victorian era) really resonate with me.
Inside (2007) is a pretty wild home invasion film, though I guess it also lands into extreme horror and body horror.
omg PLEASE do the top 25 psychological horror!!
First! Woo hoo, never happened before. And even better, a 35-minute discussion from my favorite film reviewer about one of my favorite topics: Horror! 🍿🥤🤓 🇺🇦💕
Fascinating tier list! "Anthology" could have been another category. I tend to agree with your top tier, but I actually love every sub-genre of horror except for "Torture & Gore". I basically tolerate the "Torture/Porn" subgenre, but exceptions are Terrifier, Inside, Hellraiser & The Reanimator, which I thoroughly enjoy. I never considered "Martyrs" to be torture/porn, but more psychological home-invasion/revenge horror.
I'd definitely love to see more "Superpowers" horror; so many missed opportunities (like with "The New Mutants")! However, I loved "Doctor Sleep", it's one of my all-time favorite movies!
Loved your presentation!! Superpower horror is pretty much owned by Stephen King and the dozens of movie and TV spinoffs from his (seemingly limitless) books. Unfortunately, most of the movies have not been very good: The Shining, The Dead Zone, The Stand, Pet Sematary, Firestarter, etc. Incidentally, under Psychological Horror you didn't mention the magnum opus: Psycho. In the supernatural category, what about Rosemary's Baby?
Final destination was a good re watch
Also, Dark Skies and Daybreaker. Maybe some Amityville horror too.
There's actually a 2021 remake of The Cube that I watched on Prime just the other day. It's more of a Japanese remake and I was honestly very underwhelmed being a big fan of the original. It's basically the same exact movie but with Japanese actors.
Home invasion has some masterpieces like funny games and last house on the left.
For me it's interesting, actually: I tend to be more interested in foreign horror movies overall, they tend to come with their unique twists and turns
For home invasion I recommend The People Under the Stairs by Wes Craven. It's pretty unique (and weird) but you should definitely check it out.
This is one of my favorite channel that talks about films.. love from Ethiopia 🇪🇹
Thank you!
Awesome video. Watched it from start to end.
Thank you!!
Have you seen Funny Games , for.home invasion ? The original or the remake ?!
Loved the remake !!
I've only seen the original, but I definitely want to see the remake as well.
Sci-Fi/Horror will always be my favorite subgenre just because of the Alien series, Invasion of the Body Snatchers films, Mimic, The Relic etc. Slashers are my second favourites and I also adore Creature Feature films but I view this subgenre as something wider - not just giant monsters. Any animal attack films are interesting to me
Some other home invasion movies I can think of off the top of my head are Don't Breathe, Black Christmas, When a Stranger Calls, Breaking In, The Collector, and No Good Deed if you count that as horror.
THANK YOU on the Sunshine recognition, one of my favourite sci-fi films and it doesn't get enough attention.
Late in the game on this video, but oh well.
I'm wondering in what category you would put 'The Blob' from 1988? Is it a creature feature or sci fi?
If you haven't already: Red, White and Blue (from 2010, not the one from 2023) is in my opinion an underrated revenge horror movie.
Also not the biggest werewolf fan, but recently watched Dog Soldiers and was really entertained!
Razorback is also a great watch, the cinematography knocks it out of the park. Should be as big as Jaws if you ask me.
There are some giallo gems. In my opinion, old and gritty will be the better
What about a tier list of horror books or horror movie tropes? :o
Since you like folk horror you should watch "The Feast" it has a lot of folk elements and its mainly a nature/ecological horror
"Ghosts are real. This much, I know. There are things that tie them to a place, very much like they do us. Some remain tethered to a patch of land. A time and date. The spilling of blood. A terrible crime. But there are others. Others that hold onto an emotion. A drive. Loss. Revenge. Or love. Those, they never go away." -- Crimson Peak.
If you really want superhero horror I suggest you watch season 3 of "The Boys" particularly the character they got right where Brightburn got wrong. That character's really scaring the fuck outta me this season.
Home Invasion is such an entertaining trope but it’s usually executed terribly.
Fantastic video , love the style of presentation too . Hard to disagree with your choices . Crimson Peak , The Woman In Black and The Others are some of my favourites . I think you might like Marrowbone and The Cursed ( Hammer style gothic werewolf movie ) . Subscribed and off to check out your other videos .
The scariest horror films are the B&W Japanese films for the domestic market that I saw in Japan during the 60s. I've been looking for them without luck. It doesn't help that I don't remember the titles, but the music and the visuals chill you like no Hollywood horror film. " Onibaba" is similar but doesn't even come close.
I put Monster movies in its own category like vampires and wolfs. Movies like Jaws, Crawl, and Back Country are just regular animals/predators
Fresh was so good! Never saw that genre explored in such a weird yet watchable way! Also, that lead actress Daisy Edgar-Jones is a rising star for sure! Her performance in Normal People blew me away!
My tier list would look pretty similar, especially the highest tier (I would just have haunted house and Gothic lower). One question though, would you consider Shutter Island an Asylum horror movie? Yes, right?
Ooo that's a good question! I haven't seen it in a very long time, so I can't remember how much horror is in there? Time for a rewatch ))
@@ImpressionBlend 😁 You should! I absolutely love that movie! I'd say it's a Mystery (Asylum) Horror Thriller.
Am new on your TH-cam channel and your videos are amazing
12:11 saving this because I'm pretty sure it will be veeery useful to explain my feelings about a movie that I think is going to be release in september xD
And I'm not super into horror because it causes me a lot of stress to the point of feeling physically unwell 😅 BUT I reaaally enjoy the "psychological" sub-genre. Also my favs are Hereditary/Midsommar, The Witch/The Lighthouse, The Others and Get Out/Us 😊
I personally like Gallo horror, even though it kind of covers all the styles it has a certain style all its own.
One sub-genre that's not frequently mentioned is "Techno-horror": Metal Head, Terminator 1, Hardware, Virus (bad example). Machines on a rampage, soulless, emotionless, nearly unstoppable, metal smeg heads.
I have two recommendations: November (fantasy , horror ) , Black mountain side (horror , mystery).
I agree! The evil superhero premise isn’t done enough in horror! There’s one film that has stayed with me for a long long time - Thelma. It’s a Norwegian film that is worth your time if you haven’t seen it. Leaves you with a lot to think about. Please let me know what you think! Loved this video btw 💛
Yes! Thank you for the reminder, "Thelma" is a great film! And thank you for your kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed the video))
Here's a question you might not expect-- your audio sounds great. What is your mic/compressor/post setup?
I think a tier list for biopics would be interesting!
That Shaun of the Dead wasn't mentioned as a horror/comedy favorite surprised me.
Edit. And What We Do in the Shadows.
You mentioned comedy horror without talking about Shaun of the Dead or the Cornetto trilogy films :O
Great idea and great video
Funny Games is a great home invasion movie! I'm not a fan of the sub-genre, but this one (and Us, obviously), wow!
Awesome! And now we finished the video! Loooooooved it. My own personal favs:
Psychological
Crime (every crime horror I’ve seen is wonderful, including and especially Se7en and Cure….and Silence of the Lambs….and Memories of Murder….and everything else lol)
Folk & Mythology (the gems = the best)
Gothic (the real gems are amazing)
Sci-Fi Horror (am including The Thing here)
Thank you! "The Thing" totally counts as sci-fi, I agree
Pontypool is one I never hear others talk about either. Also, there is a radio drama version of it that is fantastic!
There is??? Oh, I have to check this out now, that sounds perfect, thank you for letting me know!
I love your channel!
I still like both comedy horror and creature feature movies, but especially with the former you‘re right that it‘s very hard to find good movies. One that falls into both categories and is a favorite of mine is Lake Placid. I was so happy when I discovered it back in the day and I haven‘t found a single person that I‘ve watched it with who didn‘t like it.
Extremely cool video. I'd have to divide slasher films into two subcategories because supernatural slashers are some of my favorite movies but I find myself bored or depressed very often by non-supernatural slasher films because they're too much like the kind of thing you can see just by watching the news.
In general, I prefer fantasy and sci-fi and supernatural to horror that is more realistic.
You might be the first person I've ever encountered who doesn't think that the practical effects in An American Werewolf in London and The Howling are amazing and still hold up very well today. We can agree that Ginger Snaps is awesome though.
This discussion has gotten me interested in horror movies featuring superpowers and from what I've heard Freaks (2018) might be really good but I have yet to watch it. The current season of Stranger Things seems to be all about this sub-genre, of course.
My Horror Sub-Genres Tier List:
Dying for More -- Supernatural (including slashers), Possession, Haunted House, Folk & Mythology, Vampires, Werewolves
Worth Another Stab -- Sci-Fi, Comedy, Body Horror, Psychological, Gothic, Creature Feature, Superpowers
Better Get Creative -- Outbreak & Zombies, Crime (Thriller/Horror), Slasher (non-supernatural)
Over It -- Revenge, Survival, Found Footage, Asylum, Cannibal
An Actual Nightmare -- Home Invasion, Torture & Gore
The Last Shift is an excellent Asylum film. Session 9 is also worth a mention.
Malum, now. Check it out.
Kind of late to the party but the horror genre has always been a very hit or miss to me but I'll leave my own tier list:
Bread and Butter: Creature Features (also including Alien & Werewolf), Horror Comedy, Cosmic Horror, Haunted House, Dark Fantasy, & Techno-horror.
Not my thing but don't mind watching from time to time: Zombie/Virus, Vampires, Ghost, & Survival.
Could be better: Supernatural & Action Horror.
Didn't even know that was a sub genre: Gothic, Crime (Unless if it's Giallo then I can understand), Superpowers, Folk & Mythology (honestly though this and Superpowers were apart of Supernatural)
HELL NO: Slasher, Found Footage, Torture Porn, & Dark Erotica.
Have not seen enough of to make proper judgment: Psychological, Revenge, Asylum, Home Invasion, Possession, Cannibal, Japanese horror, & Body Horror.
This should be fun. I'll have to make some popcorn for this one 🍿.
Maybe do a Book Tier List of books being worthy, average, or don't waste your time. Just a suggestion. 👍🏾
the collector is one of the best home-invasion horror films
Its been a while since seeing Chronicle. I remember it being good but don't recall much of a horror element to it.
Great list review video! 💯😁
Sci fi horror is at the top of my list. The first and 2nd Alien movies are some of my all time favorite movies of any genre. Also love Gothic horror, psychological horror and folk/ mythology horror.
Can you do a ranking of your favs Spanish language thriller/horror movies? 🙏
I discovered them during the lockdown and am now OBsessed! they are SOOO f’n good! 🍿🔥❤️
You missed cosmic horror which is where I'd put annihilation.
I love supernatural, haunted house and possession horror. Psychological can be good too.
So, if you love Superpowers Horror, you really should see the Finnish/Norwegian film THE INNOCENTS. My number 1 film from last year! 😍
Loved the video, found myself talkig back to you in agreement and disagreement haha... very entertaining. Thank you.
Hi Marianna - I'm pretty sure you would be on board with this. Thrillers - Let The Right One In & And A Quiet Place. Sorry, I just realized you mentioned them. But I can't help mentioning them again. Please forgive me. But they are the best of the best. PS - if you haven't read the book Let The Right One In, it's a must read.
Recommendations (no idea if you have already seen them)
1. Cannibal Horror: ‘We are What We Are’
2. Comedy Horror: ‘Shaun of the Dead’
3. Home Invasion Horror: ‘You’re Next’
4. Folk and Mythology: ‘The Ritual’
5. Vampire Horror: ‘30 Days of Night’
6. Creature Feature: ‘Crawl’
Love that you mentioned Pontypool.
I agreed with you for the most part, but Session 9 is GREAT.
Cosmic horror is another unexplored territory , examples I could think of it right now will be
1.the passengers
2.(event horizon) the movie where they discover spaceship where everyone died and
3.love death and robot's beyond the Aquila rift
I think this might be too similar to sci fi but cosmic horror is more terrifying due to vastness of space and how insignificant our limited space and lifetime is
Edit: found the movie name
Is “Gerald's Game” considered “Survival Horror” and what did you think of it?
For “Supernatural horror” what did you think of “Empty man?”
also thanks for the new recommendations!
