Returning to this review after paddling my M Scorch for a season. Gotta say a lot of this rings very true to me still. The way I describe this boat is it feels like a creeker made for people used to half slices. Leaning forward really is rewarding in most situations, and keeps the tail from catching so often. . . Coming from the Ripper, this feels way more friendly with more primary stability and the bow stays so high. Bouncing off of rocks is consistent and rarely catches me off guard. . . This quickly became my go-to boat for all the gnarly runs this season. :) Thanks for the great content, Wade! Happy Paddling!
The video's inset shows the width as 27", as do a number of reviews and dealer websites. The Pyranha website says 25.5", which is what I got when I measured mine. Could be that there was an erroneous release of specs early on.
Wow I never noticed that but yeah I pulled the specs off the Pyranha page if it’s changed I don’t know and i did not measure the boat to verify anything that’s a lot to be off by
Great video Wade. I'd love to see your review of the Scorch medium and X. I also value when you rate boats 1-10 in as many categories as possible. Thanks man.
@@WadeHarrison what size code did you paddle? Seems like you and I would be a M in both boats. If the stern is catchy on the large I'd be a mess in a medium but I'm not a good boater. Code seems more forgiving similar to the mamba and a good intermediate and novice boat (which is what I need haha).
Hello Wade Please say always something about sizing during your reviews. For me as an intermediate skilled, 182lbs paddler, for many boats I am always between the M and L. So I do not know what to choose ? Of course it also depends on what for rivers and runs but maybe you can fit all parameters a little bit together.
I do cover size on how I fit and what I think would be good size for the boat I’m also 185 and puts me a lot of times in between M and L so I do try my beat to cover the size of the boat and even throw the manufacturer’s specs up I covered it in the walkthrough of the on water review
Great review. I like that you are describing more of your experience both while paddling and after, as opposed to some of your earlier reviews that had less talking. I’m a little surprised the tail was that “grabby” given that you are barely in the weight range for the Lg. Might really be noticeable for peeps in center or top of range. Did stern remind you of Alpha at all?
Hey thanks feedback yeah I wanted to add little more in there at the end and I think it was like it’s not really floating under as much because I’m on so much of the lighter side it when I got more forward it felt like it help but this boat was designed to drive off that aggressive tail so I think it’s just a tune in process it’s a very different feeling boat
Thanks for the video Wade ... Here in Chile we really like to surf whenever possible in our creek kayak, and I would like to ask you if you find that it surfs better than the Burn or similarly?
@@WadeHarrison Thank you, I still detect that it is only your appreciation for the flat helmet, but once you try them surfing, tell me how it behaves when surfing.
@@WadeHarrison Totally! I like the idea of driving off the tail if needed/wanted. I guess what I meant was did you find either a seat position or body position where the tail was only in play when you wanted it to be? Also do you feel like this is a boat for advanced paddlers only or is there room for a intermediate paddler to grow in it.
@@brianwruck622 I’m in the medium and I’m able to use that tail pretty good and yes I feel this design is advanced to expert type of boat someone could learn in it but think it’s more suited for someone wanting to step up their game
I hope Pyranha hooks you up with boats, you give the best reviews. The design of this one has me intrigued. I have an old Burn and have loved it, but this one has me itching for an update.

This boat looks so sick!!! I'm not in the market for a creek boat atm, but if I do need one, this is at the top of the list. How do you feel about a halfslice version? I would love that, although the ripper is still going strong
HalfSlice the options I like the ripper rewind as 2 of the top and the Antix 2 and chilli are second but honestly they all all so good as far as paddling downriver it comes down to how much play you want on the tail and that goes Antix 2 and rewind downriver smoothness ripper and chili
So pyrahna lists the large scorch width at 25.5 on the website. I'm guessing that is a mistake? Did either this one or the medium paddle like they were the same width or thinner than the GOAT (listed at 25.6)? I see your specs say this one is 27in wide.
Yeah this was a preproduction spec I didn’t measure the boats I just posted what Pyranha had up on their site in hindsight I should have got my tape out and verify the width I can tell you paddling both they both the L doesn’t feel like it’s that wide my guess Pyranha measured from rail to rail the width is in the side walls on the L
Go check the scorch M walkthrough and you will see the update specs from Pyranha I got those confirmed from Pyranha here is a link where I compare the M and L th-cam.com/video/e61LJOdpFuM/w-d-xo.html
Hey Wade, awesome video I am a big fan of you. I am going to buy a scorch, but I don't know which size (M or L). I am 5´11 and 190-195lbs usually running WW IV rivers. I don´t have the possibility to try them out. So far I paddled Wawe sport diesel 70, great boat and ZET Toro, good boat but hard to turn it on a dime. What would you recommend?
Go medium the large is big but not massive at my heaviest I got up to 210lb over the winter and the scorch M handles that weight fine i usually can go back and forth between M and L but with this boat M is spot on
What is the difference between a creek boat and a river runner? My Wife wants a boat and I want to buy her one before she changes her mind, ha ha, she loves tight turns and maneuvering. She wants something with more volume than say an antix, what do I want to look at, I don't know the difference? I do everything in my half slice...
Well that question has a few answers but I will just talk about this boat and it’s what I would say it a River running Creeker but traditionally thinking boats like the machno and nomads those are true creekers rounded off bows soft edges for sliding over rocks but nowadays manufacturers have blended the worlds together better I think this is more like a fast flowing downriver boat more suitable for big water type runs where say like the machno is better for rock boofs and soft landings no surprise edges ect hope that helps
Difficult to give a straight answer on that one I always suggest demoing both if possible all I can tell you if I had to choose only one I’m going scorch it just feels little more polished design but the Gnarvana is really good so seriously can’t go wrong either way
@@WadeHarrison That would be great! Hey Paul that's a day touring style boat and I can tell you that's one of the best day touring boats out there I paddled the Stratos a lot the 12.5 is has more rock garden and the 14.5 is more slow moving rivers and all round lake and off shore
