The conflict between Spandau and the rest of Berlin is legendary - Spandau was the eastern-most stronghold of the wendish _Svatodorans_ who lived west of the Havel river, while the rest of Berlin belonged to the Sprevjane (capital at Köpenick). The Poles helped Jaxa of Köpenick (leader of the Sprevjane) to overthrow the Svatodorans to take their throne in Brandenburg, however he was quickly defeated by Albrecht the Bear (Saxon king) who used this move to declare the foundation the Mark Brandenburg as it's own feudal entity.
