- 75 years after the end of WWII, travel expert Lukas Stege visits memorials in Berlin to find out what impact the war had on the German capital. Among his destinations are the Reichstag, the Topography of Terror museum, a flak tower and museums of the Allies.

I remember seeing the Reichstag sitting empty, dark (and unloved in 1992). Seeing the present, stately incarnation is inspiring!
Many thanks Lukas for posting such a great documentary. I would love to do the tour of these sights maybe one day?
I´m german and we have thousands of little memorials called Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) which are embedded in the sidewalks in front of the houses of mostly jewish people who have fallen victim to the nazi regime.They have a golden surface and names engraved. Right in front of my block is one of those stones and people always make sure that those stones are cleaned and some even have candles surrounding them
@SergeantSilly A nice tradition has even developed: During the days commemorating the November progroms of 1938, many Germans with a "Stolperstein" in front of their residences light candles or lay flowers.

They are everywhere in Europe that had a Jewish population that was effected by the holocaust.

Great video, BTW it's "Flak Tower" (not flag tower), the towers had 88mm and 128mm anti-aircraft batteries (Flak) which were also used as artillery during the Battle of Berlin.
I was in Berlin before the reunification. I wish we had more time to explore some of the things you mentioned. Thanks.

Great video..I visited berlin for the fourth time in July (Depeche mode Olympic stadium)..always a bucket list..the history of the place is just immense and much is still there..one place off the beaten track I would recommend is the Russian memorial at Tiergarten..Hidden away on the old eastern side it's simply on another level..almost raiders of the lost ark esk..Tiergarten itself is a great place to visit in the summer..bars/ restaurants / music..I did manage to see the old fun fair in spree spark before it was demolished..(shown in the cult film Hannah)..another site steeped in history..love the place 👌
I highly recommend seeing the German Resistance Memorial Center located at the Bendler Block.

Berlin is personally my favourite city. I've even to countless places in the world but Berlin just had something that no other city has in my opinion! A damm shame what happened to this city and seeing the photos of it now compared to even 1943 are just bonkers.

I wish they didn't fill in the bunker. It would have been a brilliant opportunity for tourists genuinely interested in the history of the war and the national socialists.
Due to extreme water damage many of the bunker rooms became unfit for rehabitation after the war...the anti nazi sentiment led to destroying the remainder of the bunker..photos of the bunker shortly after the war showed extreme water damage and flooding...authorities decided to seal and bury the remainder of the bunker complex.By 2008, all that is left is a large sign describing the bunker, now a parking lot....
That’s exactly the problem. It would have been attracted people interested in Nazism
burrying it draws more attention. secrets are fond upon. if they truly wanted to destroy fascism they would show its consequences not burry it
Gotta remember, at the time the Russians who controlled the city didn't give a damn about the bunker. The war had only ended a little bit ago, it was just part of the cleanup. Just another bunker among thousands.

As far as the impact is concerned, one could point out that there are still bullet holes on the facade of the Reichstag dating back to the fighting in May 1945. This makes one wonder. Today, similar bullet holes can be found on the walls of Ukrainian cities, possibly due to the same Kalashnikov models remaining in Russian arsenals!

@Snapdragon No that one was demolished long ago. Lukas visited the Flak Tower in Berlin's Humboldthain, which, by the way, is only a stone's throw away from us here @dw..
That Flak Tower is close to Gesundbrunnen U-Bahn station. And close to U-Bahn station is the Berliner Unterwelten -office and one of the actual museum sites is actually inside the U-Bahn station.
I visited there few years ago and also the Flak Tower.

I travelled Berlin .Had a day tour in a bus. I e joyed a nice younggirl . Sne did a good job.

very good informative report on Berlin. i am writing a screenplay that has Berlin scene, Reichstag Fire, 1933. the fire was a Ten Alarm/ Ten Fire Halls answered the alarm of fire at the Reichstag, Berlin, February 1933, a cold night, some ice and snow. the "911" terrorist attack in New York in 2001 caused coincidentally another major Ten Alarm Fire. i want to depict Ten Fire Halls answering the Alarms at start of the Reichstag Fire. need to know where Berlin Fire Dept. and any related museums and institutions related to that important history. i want to make authentic scenes. not hollywood dribble. hope somebody sees this message in a bottle from near Vancouver Island Canada.

And ironically today Germany's neighbors still hate them as much as 70 years ago and are trying to shake them down for $1.5 trillion at a moment of severe economic hardship. So much for reconciliation. If the Germans had followed the Japanese/Russian/Turkish strategy and said denied everything ironically people would blame them less for it today as there'd be nothing to gain from it. International relations is like twitter: the more you apologize the guiltier you are.
I have not been to Japan but I have worked with many people who are of Korean origin and they feel that Japan has not publicly apologized for it’s social and military crimes of the 1930’s and 1940’s and even earlier. Japan is of course an admirable democracy now. The loss of democracy in the past accounted for military crimes that the Japanese public would probably not have agreed to at that time in history. Germany is to be admired for clearly announcing it’s very bad behaviour in the past and for making efforts to genuinely apologize to the world and for going overboard to make amends. Of course, most countries have some degree of shame in their past. From my understanding, Japan owes China and Korea a thorough and full apology. I am not Korean or Chinese but the history is quite unequivocal and obvious. It is not too late ! Thank you for listening. RS. Canada
