Your videos are making my parents consider a family trip to Japan... we've started talking about saving 😅 the hardest part but still something. We never really took it seriously because it's so damn expensive, but now the talking started
I haven’t been able to recreate that feeling of going on the plane watching wierd Japanese shows and having Japanese airline food. And then when you land the excitement. It was such an experience and I’m happy you guys will feel it too
@@MostlyPennyCat Do you know that people living in Tokyo can also say the same thing too. Japan is also considered an island. If you look at the map, it is surrounded by water. I know you call your island beautiful. That term beautiful is also what the people in Tokyo can describe their island too. No rules saying an island needs to be a tropical beach area. I would assume that you live near the beach. Any island in the map can have big cities away from oceans too.
Love this! When I was growing up in Tokyo (Kichijoji area) 20+ years ago, I was a teen so I never really saw this kind of late night atmosphere! But I definitely did walk through residential areas after dark and that deep quiet, "have the place to myself" feeling is very natsukashii. ❤
In a way, it is an example that once you become an adult, you get to do anything you want which includes travelling at your own terms. That can include travelling in the middle of the night seeing the city lights. When you see them walking there, I guess in a way that they are old enough to be independent. The populated people you saw there meant once they are old enough to be independent, they did not have any school life.
Tokyo is really one of the best places for "night photography". Even when you don't have these neon lights, the results keep being amazing, giving you that Japanese "traditional" style of the shops, combined with the narrow passes. Thank you for the walk Norm! Hope you are great! And keep hydrated, it's really important in such a hot weather!
You hit on one of my favorite things about Tokyo-the fact that, even in the busiest parts of the city, all you need to do is turn onto a side street and suddenly you’re all alone and it’s very quiet. It’s never been a city that’s felt overwhelming to me, unlike other places I’ve been.
Norm is one of the best story tellers on TH-cam. I aspire to be on his level, but reality is, articulation of one’s thoughts is a skill on it own, this channel has reached level 100 on that stat. Continue to inspire a lot more people Norm. Have a good one 😊
I love a sleeping city. Something so beautiful and magical about having a place usually packed and bustling all to yourself. It's like you can still feel the energy humming just below the surface but it's quiet and peaceful. Also, always a huge fan of you showing us those tiny little hidden shrines!!
I think you mean sleepless city. This area that is filmed is where a city that do not sleep. If the city were sleeping, then you would see every business there close. Sleeping city means a ghost town. I don't think you want to go back to this 2020 era. Even Las Vegas became a sleeping town due to the way how the government shuts it down. If you say you love sleeping city, that is like saying you rather see the city go into quarantine.
I tend to get bad jet lag when I visit Japan and find myself waking up at very odd hours. When it’s 3am and you are wide awake what’s better than going for a walk and watching the sun come up and the city start to stir? Great vid Norm - thanks for reviving some happy memories!
What a great video! Tokyo is a city that needs to be discovered and explored on foot and it always looks so much better at night. It's also really nice to see the east side getting a bit of love. Too many other videos focus on the west side. There's way more to Tokyo than those over done areas. Although with 20minutes to official sunrise you had just enough time to get up to Ueno Park and maybe even Yanaka cemetery😁
Remember that city walks is not the same as going to the country side. If you go to that city in Tokyo, you won't expecting any forest or any kind of nature related to a park.
@@Theorof Forest areas, or any nature place is where if you wanted a quiet place to relax. If you want forest, you might be thinking going to the mountains where you are away from crowded people. If you wanted noisy crowded streets, you come to this big city. You can tell by watching this video, this city is definitely not taking place in the mountains. If you choose a residential area, then you will go to places that is less populated with people. There are some who choose to live in a middle of nowhere which means those residents don't get to have any city life there. Forest or farming areas is for people that want to get away from noisy crowds and would rather be in a quiet deserted place.
My family and I just spent a week (just returned home on 7/15/23) in Tokyo and it was AMAZING!!! We walked and saw amazing sights and sounds(Imperial Palace, Tokyo Sky Tree, Sumida City, Chiba, Funabashi, and the surrounding neighborhoods). We loved our stay and are looking to going back. I thought about contacting you, but I figured you’d be busy and wouldn’t have time to respond to all the messages you get. (I was right)! You live in a wonderfully dynamic and great city. Mahalo for all you share with us with your home and city and life! Always looking forward to the next video!
I've been in Cyprus during a heatwave of 44°C, and yet Tokyo in the summer STILL felt hotter! It's ridiculous...but I love it! I can't wait to get back and explore again and bring my daughter and show her the country I love so much!
Walking in nighttime Tokyo is always so fun. I love watching the sunrise in the morning while in Tokyo. I am usually in the Asakusa and Ueno area, so I definitely have to check out the Shimbashi and Roppongi areas for nighttime walks in my next trip!
What if you were to ask someone to take you to Japan. You would have to be specific. Remember once someone promises you to take you to Japan, they might even take you to Tokyo where it is quiet and deserted. What if that person were to take you to a residential area? You won't see any city lights there. If you choose a business area, you may notice that it is a ghost town at night. Certain areas in Tokyo can be a ghost town too and certain areas in Tokyo can have business being closed at night. So if you were to say you wanted a popular spot where it is a big city where people stay up late, then you are picking the one that is filmed in this youtube channel. Just remember if you only describe seeing Japan at night, it won't necessarily mean based on what you see in this youtube channel. What if that person were to take you to a farming place? Note that seeing Japan at night can be anywhere in Japan. Even the ones that you don't see in this youtube channel.
Hey Norm, I've been bingeing your videos since I discovered your channel about a month back. I love your content but most of all your positive energy and your fearlessness to try new things. It's inspiring and infectious and its taught me a few things that perhaps I needed to hear. Keep making cool videos! Excited to visit Japan later this year!
Welcome aboard! Love having you here early I always chat at the start of a vid release so it gives us a bit of a chance to get to know each other welcome to the adventure!!
@@TokyoLens HAHAH This is cool ;) I think you are possibly the coolest person. I sound like a kid saying that but no really I am 31. Side note have you been able to play the Shamisen again?
I never tire of seeing somewhere I'm not yet able to visit, explored and explained so beautifully, thanks for all the work you put in to making these Norm!
Got back from visiting Japan a couple of weeks ago, and I wish I did a full night walk like this when I was staying a few days in Ueno. Will save this video for reference when I next visit Japan. Thanks as always for the videos Norm!
As long as you choose a location that actually have a city light, then you have a shot. If you book a hotel anywhere else in Tokyo, you will discover that outdoors are less populated but you will see through the windows that people also work in the office in the middle of the night through a hotel window. If you book a hotel where this man Norm is recording it in youtube, then it is convenient for you to enjoy the night walk Some areas in Tokyo can be a ghost town as well but Norm did not choose that area for recording. I have been to areas where there are certain shops or certain restaurant that close for dinner. I know I had seen certain areas where it is quiet in Tokyo even if it is 7 pm or 8 pm. In business areas, lesser people travel outdoors but if you choose time square areas full of city lights, you will discover that many people walk there in the middle of the night and every shop do not close. I had past experience going to 7 Eleven late a night. I went like damn, I am the only customer or customer number there is very tiny. Those city lights becomes a tourist attraction that make you want to have enough energy to stay up late at night. That video you see here is a place where a man record the most populated people in Tokyo to record and that right there is a place where it is a time square location.
Thank you for another video, I love your videos, I don't know why it give me a very chill vibe and I can relax drinking my coffee, the content is so high quality, the editing.. everything! thank you so much!
Thank you Norm for walking across Tokyo and show me the night view which I wouldn't be able to see myself!!😊🗼🌃 I liked the Neon lights still on on small street😊
Reminds me of my puberty days where I'd bike across the town from my house to Tokyo Tower after midnight. Yotsuya area is a gem to wander at night too.
So in 2020 I was about to move to Japan when the country locked down. I know it sounds odd, but one of the things I was truly looking forward to was being able to explore at night. Where I'm out it's not really safe to do so. I'm looking at at least visiting early next year and my list of things to look at is SO LONG Also stay safe in the heat. This might have been better to do in September lol. Also also- I'd love to see this in longform, though I know that's a pain to edit. Have a great week :) Also also also, what's your bag? I keep getting smaller bags and then the PD clip doesn't work well on the straps. (I feel like I've seen this somewhere)
I so love night walks, you're so lucky to be able to do that. I live in a big city too but there's no way I'd walk around it at night. The best part of the video for me was all the little alley ways. The tiny shrine was wonderful. I'm so sorry you can't play the shamisen anymore. I know that was something you really loved doing. Thanks for the walkabout Norm. Take care.😊
There's something about quiet cities that it's enchanting. It's also something comforting about watching people start their days as well, can't describe it. Amazing video as always
0:54 OH MY GOD I visited Japan in April and I got a photo of a hand-holding couple in the EXACT same street and the exact same spot as these 2 people. This takes me back , 😭😭😭
Yeah, in June, the sunrise was 4:30 as well. Even by 4, it seemed bright. I miss Japan. It feels like a part of my heart and soul is missing. Thanks for these videos. We can still experience Japan.
This video was so much fun and really took me back to when I first started watching you live, walking around the backstreets. Amazing atmosphere and as always you are in such a good mood, it lightens my day. Thank you
I'm learning to read and write/speak Japanese every day and planning to visit when I've ready to, so watching videos like this keeps me feeling motivated and inspired because sometimes it doesn't 'feel real'? Awesome video✌️😁 some lovely shots of the little back streets!
i seriously love your videos, i do school online due to my anxiety about in person school. everyday i throw on any one of your videos while i do schoolwork and i genuinely love just listening and watching your videos while i work. i hope to overcome a large part of my anxiety and hopefully fly to and live in Japan someday. much love! 💗
You wouldn’t have had to say you were sorry about not replying to people and we would know as much, because you put out those kind of vibes, but the fact you feel you need to is why we love you and your content man.
I love Norm's personality! He's so friendly and open to adventures! it makes me want to get out more myself! I'm going to Japan for the first time in September and this video along with a few others have inspired me to visit certain places that aren't super well known! Thank you Norm!
Loved the video. I like how there is really no shortage of great picture spots in the narrows streets at night. The lights from the signs create an lovely glow to everything. Everything is so picturesque. Seems pretty nice to walk around at night, except for the terrible heat and humidity. Thanks for sharing!
I was in Japan in 2019. Because of the time difference I was unable to get to sleep so I walked around Shiba Park from midnight to about 2 AM. Went back to the hotel and was able to sleep. I had fun. 11 minutes to Tokyo Tower and 4 - 5 minutes to the subway. 6 minutes to Zozoji Temple. It was like I had the city to myself. I want to go back so bad... Edit: I understand that the Shiba Park Hotel has remodeled and is even better! Second Edit: You walked right around the same place I did. Cool.
Sounds like you had chosen a busy street area to book a hotel. If you booked a hotel anywhere else in Tokyo, you will see the streets being populated with lesser people at night even during dinner hours. I remember the time when I went to Japan in 2018. When I took a walk late at night, I only went to 7 Eleven. I also see that certain shops do close late at night. In a hotel window, I see people working in the office late at night but lesser people hanging outdoors. Lesser people go outdoors at midnight. As long as you book a hotel with city lights and being a busy street that has a time square, you will be in an area where populated people walk in the middle of the night enjoying the city lights. I would assume the area where you book a hotel, every shop do not ever close. So you can see that he only filmed the busy street area for youtube but leave out the quiet areas. Tokyo also have quiet areas too where during the night, it is a ghost town. Areas you chosen in Tokyo is not a ghost town.
I love how you find the nooks and cranies of Tokyo that we don't usually get to see with other vloggers. Very uncharted territories. Something new, every time!😊
Your videos are always full of curiosity and wanderlust, i love them so much, you find adventures in places most people wouldn't look at twice and it reminds me to look at the world with a childlike curiosity.
Always love your positive vibes so I’d like to thank you for that Norm. I spent the 2020-2021 lockdowns walking across London, listening to your podcasts, planning for better days…and here I am now, living in Tokyo, enjoying this video and thinking of walking across the city..thanks for being a source of inspiration !
I am sure even in this city of Tokyo, people did go on lockdown back in 2020. I had seen even Las Vegas gone on lockdown in 2020. You can be on lockdown in any country. Even a city that never sleeps started sleeping in 2020. Makes no difference if you were in London, Las Vegas or even Tokyo. 2020 was the time period where majority of places was in Lockdown. Besides, this video was posted 10 months ago so I bet you could not have seen this video during your lockdown. That guy could not record it in 2020 because it was most likely a ghost town.
The fact that you can walk across a city like toyko in safety is amazing to me. I have been to many large cities across the world and can not imagine that.
I would assume in Tokyo, they don't have laws that will promote scamming. Where I come from, they built laws where it is pedestrians first no matter what. When that law is written like that, many pedestrians takes advantage to scam drivers. Cops gives permission for pedestrians to scam for insurance money. If the driver goes around the pedestrians to avoid accidents, the police will only give drivers a ticket for cutting in front of a pedestrian. Many pedestrians would stalk drivers and plus, many people hate solitude life and would harass strangers. That is the whole reason why people walking in Tokyo feel safe. In that area of Tokyo, people is so comfortable in solitude life so therefore, strangers leave other strangers alone.
Plus you will be amaze how many shops there do customer service. Where I come from, cashiers make taking a break their 1st priority. In Tokyo, when they see customers, they stop what they are doing and immediately be prepared to help customers. Where I come from, cashiers keep customers waiting when they feel tired and they will make being short staff as an excuse. In Tokyo, they don't make short staff as an excuse to give slow service. Even if they are short staffed, they are willing to be there for the customer. They don't look for breaks. That is another example why this location of that time square city is where it does not sleep. Anybody working in any shops in Tokyo must show their energy level. If they slack off, it will be a false advertisement. So no kidding. That place does do service based on what they claim on advertisement. They do more then just open the shop for 24 hours. They also show their commitment level too. Workers there are awake physically and mentally.
Me and my friend already made it to a ritual watching your videos. Watching you exploring japan from a narrative perspective makes it so much enjoyable.
Suffering from the Sunday Scaries (teacher thing) and haven’t been able to calm the anxiety. Taking a mental health break with a walk through Tokyo. Thank you! Take care!
I just love the vibes and the way you talk about life here. I plan on moving and ever since finding your channel it has made me want to move even sooner! Hope you and all here are having a good life!
just seeing that last birdge to Akihabara give me chill down my spin. Last time I went to tokyo I use to take that bridge everyday, so many good memories, Thanks!
Since I started my study abroad in Tokyo last year I also just walk around in the city. It's just very calming to see such a big city calming down at night and having it almost to your self. The only thing I don't really do is exploring the rooftops. Is there like a special mark or other thing you need to watch out for, for which buildings you can go on or do you just go on random ones? Anyways thanks for the nice video :3
These types of videos are probably by far my favorite of yours. I love the mini documentary as well, but these Tokyo night videos are so damn calming. Thank you for making these, they truly help calm my anxiety. Much love 🙏🏼
Honestly Norm I just love watching your videos. It's always a nice comfy time and it's always super informative on stuff I never knew. I also kind of hope you do one of those "walking around X town in Japan" where it's just you walking maybe occasional talking or info dumps about stuff all raw and unedited as a 4-6 hour video to just chill out to with a little music in the background.
It hurts the heart to hear that you can't play shamisen any longer Norm, and I was really hoping there was some way for you to get back playing again. Congrats on the school doing so well! Much deserved!
I love your music choices for this trip through the night. Really creates a neat vibe! thanks for bringing us on this fun trip through the city as well.
🥳 yay!!! Walking Tokyo at night and rooftop photography are still on my to do list, but I love how many people are out and about at omoide yokocho/Shinjuku at 3am (thank you Shinjuku station live cams) and by comparison how quiet Nakamise dori in Asakusa is. Continuing on 🚶♀️to see what other midnight madness can be found. have an amazing week, Norm 🛩💜✌🐦
@@TokyoLens it would have maybe been a little less fun -for you 🤭🤔- as it was chucking it down with rain that night/day, but so many things OTL cause you know I want to see Tokyo from the water too. Maybe in October/November? I haven't finalized my plans yet
That feeling of having all of tokyo for yourself must be great at that time. A mindnight walk in Japan is definitely something I should consider doing myself some day.
I can say from my visits that some of my best times were spent just randomly wandering, theres so much to see and explore even in the city. Also just doing a full round on the train line in Tokyo was quite fun.
This is already my second favourite video of yours, ever. I'm probably gonna be rewatching this one as much as I rewatch the night photography on rooftops video with Lukasz. I love the streets at night, and it was so good to see more of them, as well as some I recognized from my recent trip. I hope the pokemon cards we got for you are among those on the wall.
Another great video. I really didn't think it was at quiet at night time there.🙂👍 When you get back to you your place I did not know that you had a nice patio. 👍 That should be an awesome place in the evening being out on that patio 🙂👍 glad you are doing okay. Please be safe and be careful. 👍🙏🙂
I’m a year late but you definitely made it! Japan has been my dream travel destination for so long and you’ve concreted that dream in stone. I just found your channel on 11/28 (today) and I have been binging non stop. Keep up the amazing videos. Dōmo arigatōgozaimasu (yes I’ve been trying to learn Japanese in hopes to visit someday)
It's fascinating to see how well illuminated places are in Tokyo after midnight. I lived in London for a few months last year and there would only really be illumination from streetlights etc in the areas where there was likely to be a lot of people walking around, so to see such tiny alleyways lit up is amazing
Happy summer! A nice midnight walk. I love the beautiful day, sun but I'm also a creature of the night too. Not many people, cars, the air feels cleaner, the moon and stars, peaceful

I am so amaze how you can walk comfortably without thinking if someone will mugged you. Just wow.
I'm stunned at how clean those alleys are. 😲
Those small shrines tucked behind all those alleyways are like checkpoints in a videogame where you rest and save your progress.
It’s impressive how clean everything is!
It looks amazingly clean and safe
I tend to get bad jet lag when I visit Japan and find myself waking up at very odd hours. When it’s 3am and you are wide awake what’s better than going for a walk and watching the sun come up and the city start to stir? Great vid Norm - thanks for reviving some happy memories!
It's so cool seeing the night part of Tokyo
I miss Japan so much. It's been over a decade now since I've been. Watching your videos makes me want to go back even more.
These city walks are always fun to watch. I hope you get a chance to do some more forest hikes, those are my favorite.
gotta wait for it not to be 40 degrees out! hahhaa
Remember that city walks is not the same as going to the country side. If you go to that city in Tokyo, you won't expecting any forest or any kind of nature related to a park.
@@hp2546 What!? The city is not the forest? Thanks for clarifying that obvious fact.
Hey! Asakusa is where I stayed in Tokyo. Cool
I love seeing Japan at night. This was beautifully filmed and edited 💜
Wow I'm glad you did something like this video. Gives a different view of Tokyo. Good job.
Love having you here early
I always chat at the start of a vid release
so it gives us a bit of a chance to get to know each other
welcome to the adventure!!
@@TokyoLens HAHAH This is cool ;) I think you are possibly the coolest person. I sound like a kid saying that but no really I am 31. Side note have you been able to play the Shamisen again?
lol pretty sure I covered the answer to that right in this vid (^_-)
genuinely glad to have you here!!
Have a good one~
@@TokyoLens Aww that's a shame, but still great that you are able to make Shamisen videos! Thanks and just joined your Patreon
welcome to that side of the adventure!!
love your walking tours - a lot of youtubers just film and don't narrate what they're showing
I never tire of seeing somewhere I'm not yet able to visit, explored and explained so beautifully, thanks for all the work you put in to making these Norm!
This was really nice to watch, can't wait to visit Tokyo myself :)
Thank you so much~
I hope you get that chance sooner rather than later!
norm tugging at my heart strings again. the back streets of osaka.......amazing doesnt describe it.
Thank you Norm for walking across Tokyo and show me the night view which I wouldn't be able to see myself!!😊🗼🌃
I liked the Neon lights still on on small street😊
thanks Lemi!!
I'm looking at at least visiting early next year and my list of things to look at is SO LONG
Also stay safe in the heat. This might have been better to do in September lol. Also also- I'd love to see this in longform, though I know that's a pain to edit.
Have a great week :)
Also also also, what's your bag? I keep getting smaller bags and then the PD clip doesn't work well on the straps. (I feel like I've seen this somewhere)
I so love night walks, you're so lucky to be able to do that. I live in a big city too but there's no way I'd walk around it at night. The best part of the video for me was all the little alley ways. The tiny shrine was wonderful.
I'm so sorry you can't play the shamisen anymore. I know that was something you really loved doing. Thanks for the walkabout Norm. Take care.😊
I have watched so many Japan related videos but this one really makes me want to go there right now. It's clean, it's beautiful, it's so nice.
Thanks for taking me on the nice walk somewhere I’ve never been.
Always love this kind of midnight videos. It's always is so chill
This video was so much fun and really took me back to when I first started watching you live, walking around the backstreets. Amazing atmosphere and as always you are in such a good mood, it lightens my day. Thank you
I'm definitely going to re-watch this video a few times, because the night vibe of Tokyo is amazing! 🤩
I'm learning to read and write/speak Japanese every day and planning to visit when I've ready to, so watching videos like this keeps me feeling motivated and inspired because sometimes it doesn't 'feel real'? Awesome video✌️😁 some lovely shots of the little back streets!
i seriously love your videos, i do school online due to my anxiety about in person school. everyday i throw on any one of your videos while i do schoolwork and i genuinely love just listening and watching your videos while i work. i hope to overcome a large part of my anxiety and hopefully fly to and live in Japan someday. much love! 💗
I’ve been in Japan for nearly two weeks now, and am loving it. Makes me appreciate these videos all the more :)
I love how well lit all of the alleyways are.
Awesome! Looks like a fun walk, too.
I melt every time I see a hidden small shrine ❤
The more I learn about the different areas and hidden gems in Tokyo the more I love it. Cant wait to come back again. Great video !
my favorite part was all the little nooks and crannies and tunnel-like ally-ways. it always fascinates me to see them.
there's something surreal about seeing a busy and noisy city become calm and quiet. love these videos as always
Me and my friend already made it to a ritual watching your videos. Watching you exploring japan from a narrative perspective makes it so much enjoyable.
I love the little shrines. I hope the kami are happy there.
Suffering from the Sunday Scaries (teacher thing) and haven’t been able to calm the anxiety. Taking a mental health break with a walk through Tokyo.
Thank you! Take care!
With every video this man posts of just showing around Japan, the more I feel motivated to make the decision to finally visit next year in May.
You know the best part of Tokyo. I also walked through Tokyo through the night and it was really a fun experience. I want to do that again.
That was such an enjoyable walk. I really like the little alleyways you duck through and find the surprise (!) hidden shrines.
I love your videos where you walk through Tokyo - it's equal part soothing and fascinating to see the city at night.
Even though I was only there a couple of weeks back. Your video just makes me want to go back again so much.
your videos calm me and help me to appreciate Tokyo for all it has to offer
Honestly Norm I just love watching your videos. It's always a nice comfy time and it's always super informative on stuff I never knew. I also kind of hope you do one of those "walking around X town in Japan" where it's just you walking maybe occasional talking or info dumps about stuff all raw and unedited as a 4-6 hour video to just chill out to with a little music in the background.
Became a fitness channel overnight!!! 🤣
That lambo sounded sooo good! And I can't get enough of those narrow alleyways.
🥳 yay!!! Walking Tokyo at night and rooftop photography are still on my to do list, but I love how many people are out and about at omoide yokocho/Shinjuku at 3am (thank you Shinjuku station live cams) and by comparison how quiet Nakamise dori in Asakusa is. Continuing on 🚶♀️to see what other midnight madness can be found. have an amazing week, Norm 🛩💜✌🐦
we should have done some of this while you were here! lol
Hi Norm! So glad you’re doing great and making these videos again. Have a great day!!! My favorite is getting to see all the amazing shrines.
Tokyo is beautiful and full of happiness ❤️
I always love the narrow back alleys, always look for them my self when in Japan.
Lovely walk around a place I'm unlikely to otherwise see, thank you!
Love that you included that Lamborghini
I love nighttime walks in Japan. They are some of the most relaxing videos to watch on youtube.
Happy summer! A nice midnight walk. I love the beautiful day, sun but I'm also a creature of the night too. Not many people, cars, the air feels cleaner, the moon and stars, peaceful
