My parents separated when I was 7, and 30 years later, this song hits me like a ton of bricks. I know that the emotional trauma that divorce has on children is something that will NEVER go away no matter how much time has passed. The weight of always feeling like you have to pick a side and not wanting to hurt their feelings was so exhausting. It causes children to have to grow up way sooner than they have to. Thank you for writing such an amazing song that SO many people are able to relate to and being able to explain divorce through a child's eyes!!

I didn't come from a broken home but this song makes me cry because i always felt like having a learning disability was all my fault 😭plus having a dad who shows no emotions growing makes the house feel like a broken home .love you so much Cole .

I don’t come from a broken home, but this song definitely puts things into perspective as to what a divorce does to children. It also makes me realize how fortunate I am to have never gone through this because I know I wouldn’t have taken it well! It hits home in a different way!
And as I’m soon to be married to the love of my life, it makes me want to fight with all I have to save all we have built because losing everything affects more than just each other.

So thankful that my husband and I somehow managed to stay together, married, while raising and loving our two precious children. My parents had to split when I was 11. We were simply blessed by God to give our own children a home with both their parents. ❤
We need a lot more of this. If you can’t love your kids enough to stop hating each other and learn to love again I don’t think you deserve those kids.
Thanks for your thoughts. My children are way into adulthood at 36 and 40, and I still struggle with the idea that their Father and I splitting up now, will affect them in ways I would rather not have them subjected to. Their father has never loved me as a wife and I wish he would find a woman that he could truly love, though that is entirely up to him.
Just finalizing divorce in Jan. 2 kids. She got the house and just moved into a 2 BR apartment and dropped them off today. I said I’ll see you next week and I love you….and ya, the apartment is carpeted. Now I’m balling in my car. Never heard that song before…

My kids life in a song that is so much about our lives. My 11 year old daughter told me last week, “mom, I don’t blame you for staying in your room when you cried about dad.” She has carried alot on her shoulders this past year. She said it’s hard to choose which parent to invite to her school stuff. She did say she likes the two homes and two holidays and birthdays. She’s very wise coming from a divorced home.
This song is close to my heart because this is literally me I was 3 when my parents split and I was so confused of why I was going to two different houses and I am currently 15 and driving 2 hours every weekend to see my dad but in the beginning my mom kept the house and my dad found a one bedroom apartment.

WOW!! how have I missed this song. I heard it just the other day on my way back from a trip. It hit me right in the face and in my feels. I am not from a divorced home but I am divorced myself and my daughter was 10 at the time. This song resonated with me with how she might have felt. I did not get to see her to much since I lived several states away and had a military commitment. I did everything I could to be there for her though while she grew up. This song just made me think about if I was a good dad. She is now almost 30 and she has a great job and living her life. We chat every so often and I am very proud of the person she has become. I always tell her I lover her and am so proud.

26 years old, parents have never so much as spent a night away from each other. However, I have two boys who have divorced parents. There’s Hot Wheels all over my living room right now and this hit hard. Never wanted this life for my boys, but it is what it is.
this song just hits as a kid who is now 18 and grew up with parents who have fought and been split since i was 10
I was this boy in the early ‘80’s. It took my wife having a miscarriage for me and my Dad to talk 20 years later. When we unpacked the divorce and I understood at 26 years old what happened, I was freed from the trauma. 10 years after that I gave the eulogy at his funeral and 10 years since I have walked with a ton of friends through divorce. I pray every kid can be free of the pain that divorce causes in families.

Thank you for this song. I come from a custody battle (parents) plus another divorce (step-dad). My little child heart did feel like it was my fault. These words hit home for me. As an adult my relationship is better now with my dad.

Such a powerful song. But also don’t stay in an abusive or loveless marriage because kids see that too!
Your kids will be impacted either way. You’re right about abusive relationships, I don’t think a single person alive can disagree. But if you’ve just fallen out of love you have two options; teach kids resiliency and that marriages are worth saving, both have to contribute to this, or teach them to be quitters, because they’ll carry that into the relationships they build in the future.

My parents divorced when I was 11. I am still fight with the trauma and the scars all this put on me. Ever since , never felt I had a family and both my parents neglected and psychologically abused me. I raised up, survived and I am now a self-made man. Never been married, 39 now and decided to not have children. I now understand why all this.... This song put tears in my eyes as I still remember 28 years ago while I still battle the scars.
