it was a great bit of writing and a great bit of voice acting, one of my favorite moments

His Florian voice sounds just like Niko.
Florian is such a good foil for Niko. Shows that someone that went through the exact same thing was still able to move on and establish a new identity.
Which is why Bernie(Florian) is so proud of Niko when he chooses not to kill Darko and just move on with life. Niko was finally free just like him.
It was harder for Niko I'm sure he went through more shit than florian
Pretty sure he also developed some DID given how jarring the change in his normal Florian voice was. It’s like Florian and Bernie are two different people

@@lutherblogz1247 Naw, it's implied they where in the same platoon/squad from the same village, and that darko sold out their position to a rival militia (going off irl history, Niko would've fought in the Yugoslavian collapse, so there where tons of shaky alliances and backroom deals- not a 'clean' war by any means) and the sqaud was ambushed, leaving darko a hefty sum and a way out of the war (which he promptly spent on heroin), and Niko and Florian as the only survivors. So they did go through the exact same thing, Florian went to new york, embraced his obvious true indentity he'd have to kept hidden in eastern europe, and moved on with his life to be a successful socialite. Niko, on the other hand, cannot let go of his revenge. Both are went through the same thing, just different people. The urge of vengeance is a hard thing to shake.

I love those little moments in the voice acting where Bernie gets angry and his vocal affectations fall away, and he becomes Florian again... like at 6:05. Gives the character even more personality.
And Florian makes another brief cameo @ 6:53.

As I get older, I’ve really come to appreciate this story. Probably my favorite out of all the gtas I’ve played
Yeah. Even though he's a violent killer, Niko is something of a tortured soul who was pushed into his fate by life circumstances and doesn't know anything else. Like Michelle said in some ways he's a nice guy and he is. The combination of those factors make him a very human character, not just your average violent criminal

Most of you said that Florian's real self comes out at 6:06 and 6:53. That's true.
For me, also in 5:44 and 5:47 Florian's real self and normal voice when talking to Niko in a more honest way. Recognise how Bernie's voice changes from high-pitched to the more masculine voice of Florian.

I would argue that since he goes back to his old voice and mannerisms when, uh, *_excited_* or angry, Bernie is more of a character he puts up to distance himself from what happened during the war he and Niko were in.

To this day I'm still upset that you can't hang out with Florian/Bernie while not on a mission.
His number is still on Niko's phone after the end of the game. You'd think Rockstar would give these two extra dialouge to catch up after so many years.
You are absolutely right, that was a complete missed opportunity. I would've loved to see Bernie get angry and have a bit of Florian coming back briefly. Bernie even suggested to hang out with him sometime which Niko agrees to after the mission where he confronts Darko.
I read somewhere this was in the beta but sadly it was cut.

they already caught up during this cutscene and during the first mission you do for bernie.

that part scared me the first time, i was like, WHOA!
I love how Bernie has his voice go deep at 6:06. It really shows how there are two people there - Bernie Crane and Florian Cravic.
For those asking why florian's voice changes, i think it's gotta do with the fact that, as a gay man, bernie restricts himself, emotionally and verbally--he doesn't cuss, and he's awfully friendly.
But when you accuse him, during two lines, his emotions and by effect his more masculine side "florian" break through.
It's a small thing, but damn, those subtleties can mean a lot when they're done right--a little character development can do a lot for story development.
Bell is another great example; during several missions, he implies that he's being spied on; when he talks, he doesn't talk too much; he turns on the radio as to not be heard by a bug, and even during mission 75, he covers his mouth when he speaks to niko (i assume to prevent any feds from reading his lips), implying a heavy dose of paranoia.
If you're interested in character development, be mindful of these subtleties; they make a world of difference in storytelling.

Replaying this game, just finished this mission. I know this had been said but 6:05 when the “Florian” comes out of Bernie. That just hits different when your so into the cutscene, the emotions of this game can’t be matched.

I'm really glad we ended up becoming allies with Bernie in the story because I seriously thought Niko was gonna end him right then and there. I'm glad he didn't because he wanted Darko dead as much as Niko did.
Honestly Ray was a real one for this. He could've just kept leading Niko on forever with "I'm still working on it, in the meantime I need another favor" but he actually delivered. I feel like he wasn't actually a rat tbh.
Ray Boccino, as much of a slimeball as he was, was also someone who looked out for and kept promises for people. If you noticed the entire story, he never once betrayed people, it was always people betraying him. It was a shame being forced to kill him, when ultimately Pegorino ends up dying as well, Ray could have lived.
It makes so much sense why Ray was so reluctant to "give his word" to Niko that he'd find Florian. Because for Ray, he doesn't "give his word" out easily. But once he does, he WILL deliver. Ray may have been a scumbag but he never tried to weasel out of his commitments.
It was Pegorino's poor judgement he hired dumb muscle from street, treated his other men like shit and killed his own man based on no evidence

He is an Eastern European man, veteran of the Yugoslavian wars, he would kill his attacker if he wanted
