Fred Gwynne. What an absolutely underrated and versatile actor. His role as the judge in "My Cousin Vinnie" is classic as the movie is timeless.

I remember my dad coming home from work, the family having dinner, and all of us gathering around the television to watch The Munsters. Great memories.
My grandmother did the make up and hair for this show! Always loved it!

The Munsters, Gilligan's Island, Batman, Star Trek, Dark Shadows, etc were all a big part of my childhood & watching them today bring back a lot of happy memories!
Dark Shadows? You watched THAT as a kid? I used to watch "Lost in Space" (Bill Mumy narrated this Munsters documentary), Land of the Giants, It's About Time (I can vaguely recall the theme song), Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and Time Tunnel.
A year or two ago I rewatched the entirety of Dark Shadows. I was also a fan of Wild, Wild West, Man from Uncle, the Avengers and Addams family.

Marilyn's dates meeting Herman and running off in fast motion over the fence and burning rubber away from the house were some of the best scenes.
This was good clean TV in the 1960s. Love it!!

The original Addams Family cartoons by Charles Addams in “The New Yorker Magazine” were far darker in their humor than the tv show was.
I once saw a book of Mr. Addams’ cartoons and they were hysterically funny. One cartoon featured a festive group of Christmas carolers, singing in front of the Addams family mansion, with Gomez, Morticia and Uncle Fester up on the roof and preparing to pour a vat of burning oil down on the unsuspecting Christmas carolers kind of like Quasimodo in “The Hunchback of Norte Dame.”
Another one featured a look out from a movie theater screen, showing all of the women in the movie audience crying intensely and the men in the movie audience grimacing at the obvious horror being shown up on the movie screen. However, in the middle of the audience, we see Uncle Fester watching the same scene with an absolute look of joy and delight on his face!
I don’t think they would have shown John Astin, the late Carolyn Jones and the late Jackie Coogan doing those things on the 1960s sit-com!

It is hard to believe the Munsters show only ran 2 seasons. I think it was very funny and the actors made the characters seem really likeable. A truly talented cast and a very entertaining show. I truly wish this show had continued. I still enjoy watching this show greatly. Very sad to lose Fred, Yvonne, and Al. At least we can still cherish their characters and work on this wonderful show forever on DVD's .

But you look at how many episodes they did during a season and you realize they put in a lot of work. Today, you see seasons of 10 to 12 episodes. The Andy Griffith Show had 36 episodes their first season.
@@vanmoody That is interesting. I was wondering how they managed to take two seasons and show repeats spanning an entire decade. I was watching this show regularly as a kid in the 90s. The movie would occasionally come on the TV too.
@@wheatpuff I just looked it up. The Munsters ran 2 yrs and did 70 episodes. That is just crazy. It's like today a show being on 7 yrs. I've been rewatching The Munsters on the Peacock app. One thing I forgot was that Lilly bought two cars for Herman and she wanted them combined into one car. This is how they got the Munster Mobile. I had forgotten this.
@@vanmoody That car was beautiful and crazy. I was a fan of the coffin dragster too. It's neat how it used to be like this staple of older shows to feature a custom car. I think of the Bat mobile, Munster mobile, Knight Rider. Custom machines that seemed to effortlessly take on a character of their own.
I actually like the fact that it is filmed in black and white. It gives it that classic look of old horror films, of which I'm a big fan.

Yes, it was strange seeing Herman Munster’s actual complexion (it was green) in that somewhat disappointing Munster film, “Munster Go Home.”
There is also some rare color film footage (taken by the makeup man) of the late, great Boris Karloff in his Frankenstein monster makeup and he, too, was green like the late, great Fred Gwynne’s lovable monster, Herman Munster.
The Munsters was a huge success here in England, airing on prime time Saturday nights on BBC One. Prime time Saturday television here in England was a goldmine and ratings proved it. Millions tuned in.

When it said "the idea of funny monsters wasn't new" at 2:00 I thought they were going to mention the Abbot and Costello stuff, .. . but they mentioned Bugs Bunny instead and made no mention of them at all.

My mom watched The Munsters growing up. She shared it with me and I fell head over heels in love! Now, I watch it with my 2 year old son. He loves Herman and will sit and watch with me for hours!
I recall the first episode of the Munsters and have been a devoted fan since 1964. The episodes never stale and I can watch any given episode repeatedly and its like the first time. Comic genius at its best. Fred Gwynn and Al Lewis nailed it!

As a kid back in the 60´s TV seemed like heaven. You had The Munsters, Batman. Star Trek, Thunderbirds, The Magic Roundabout etc. Some realy crazy stuff around those days, full of charm and creativity. Times long gone.
Don't forget The Addams Family, I Dream of Jeanie, The Jetsons and The Flintstones.

I'm an 80's kid from Costa Rica and watching The Munsters at noon was the happiest part of the day. They are still aired regularly and I still feel that happy every time I find it. One of my all time favorite TV shows!
I didn't know how long it ran; I have watched every single one a hundred times. Fell in love with it as a child, and still watch them from time to time.
What a great time to grow up as a kid, The Munsters, The Outer Limits (my fav.), Twilight Zone, Johnny Quest, Batman, Lost in Space, Addams Family, Famous Monsters Mag., Eerie, Creepy, Aurora Monster Kits and even my Mother had her evil soap opera - Dark Shadows ! and all those different Fri/Sat night Horror theatre movie that brought back all the Classic Horror & Sci-Fi movies and usually after that was mystery theatre with Sherlock Holmes or Mr.Moto or Charlie Chan !!! It was a great time for kids and parents ! I know I missed many more but there it is, I still love this stuff !!! Oh yeah and all those beautiful 1960s American cars !!!

+Heru- deshet Yes I tend to do this, I still love all the older fun TV of my youth it was like I said a great time . There are many good modern Sci-Fi/Horror TV - Grimm, Walking Dead, Falling Skies, American Horror Story, Sleepy Hollow, Under the Dome and more but they lack the fun factor of that era. Also it helps mask the issues of the real world for me - work, bills, relations,etc. Thanks for posting !

Prog X Most of the older actors today like William Shatner started out in shows like The Twilight Zone, Outer Limits and others.
Did you ever watch "The Invaders"? It starred Roy Thinnes as David Vincent, who accidentally discovers an alien invasion that's already underway. It had a lot of Cold War overtones in it. How about "Chiller Theater"? Those were the days, man.
Television was so much more family oriented back then. Nowadays, almost every TV show has to have foul language, sexual innuendo, and an idiot with an IQ lower than his shoe size portraying the "father figure". No wonder network television has lost 90% of their regular viewers.
I feel fortunate to have grown up when parents didn't have to worry about their children seeing "adult content" on television. I was just a toddler when The Munsters originally aired, but I still think it's much better than just about any modern sitcom.

I remember when my uncle showed this to me and my brother when we where young I couldn't get enough of it. I definitely will show this to my kids someday instead of the garbage that is on today.
In 1993, I recognized Grandpa Al Lewis near my office in New York. I was not going to let the chance pass so I said "Al? Al Lewis! " He spun around and answered "yes." I told him how in college, we used to pile into the tv room to watch the show and how much we enjoyed it. I also told him that I knew that he was one of the best basketball scouts in the country. He was flattered and said "I am the best roundball scout in America." He really was a great judge of basketball talent. Later, I moved to Montreal and found that the Munsters were as beloved in Quebec as in America. Fred, Al, Yvonne, Rest in Peace, you made many people very happy.

I love how this was such a wholesome show. Such care was taken to keep it that way. All were great actors. It always made me laugh, especially how they tried to make Marilyn feel normal and that they felt so bad for her. Great show!
Not sure it was so wholesome. I was an oversexed early teen and raced home to “amuse” myself on Marilyn, I dream of Jeanie, Bewitched….I was a shocker.

When it comes to art direction, photography, set and makeup design, The Munsters was one of the most artistically well done shows in TV history. Great texture and atmosphere

The B&W approach, while cost conscience, gave the show a more eerie feel, imo. And the final casting cuts were another very good choice.

LOVE the Munsters I have every episode downloaded to my hard drive and I usually watch them every day.
Even though a man of twenty two, my son watched online and loved it. He watched the shows one after the other. Yvonne was a great choice with those expressive eyes! Lovely.
My 3 year old son is obsessed with the universal monsters, just got the Munsters boxset on amazon for him. Heres hoping a new generation loves it

I absolutely LOVE this show! Just a lot of clean, crazy fun! It was great!!!! The actors were absolutely wonderful. You couldn't replace them if you tried!!!
What is amazing other than their success was how many episodes they use to film for tv back then.. 70 episodes in just 2 years! man it can 4+ for shows to do that now, and the actual length is much lower.. to top it off they didn't make the money that stars make today

Because of the juxtaposition of the character stereotypes, it is also brilliant comedic satire!!
The "chemistry" script wise between the characters is STUNNING.
It was always going to be a 2 - 3 season show as writers had to run out of good and "new" stories fairly quickly....at 70 episodes they reached that point.
Remember...this was a 4-5 episode per week program once audiences got quickly hooked.
It's continued success across generations is everything to do with the above....I hope they organized a salary and future broadcast commission. They would be set for life..............This show is watched each week, by almost as many viewers as the "Addams Family"

I live in the uk, im 36 and grew up watching this and loved it. Im glad they made the changes to the cast or it would of not been the same. Brilliant show

Excellent documentary. The show never gets old. In fact, each time one sees an episode, something new is spotted. The acting was top notch as well.
It's a shame that The Munsters was losing its ratings because of the success of Batman. I love both shows so much.

Fred Gwynne was a hell of a good actor and it's a shame his career suffered for years after the show was cancelled. Very talented man, wide range and a great voice, he could do it all.
It would have been nice if they had talked about Jack Marshall, the guy who composed both the Munsters' theme as well as the incidental music. Music plays such an integral part in a show's mood and personality, and most of the time people don't realize it.
Way too often TV composers are often forgotten. Shame too since his Munsters theme is ingrained in pop-culture history.

You can't re-make a classic, the original Munsters cast had a magic and charisma that simply couldn't be recreated by other actors. Fred Gwynne and Yvonne De Carlo as Herman and Lily were my favourites, wonderful actors both and you totally believed they were a happily married couple!

Growing up with shows like Gilligans' Island, the Munsters and others, it's almost shocking how short their runs really where. (2, 3 seasons sometimes)
it's sad that the past was snipped off from the current day as it's been... now we have hundreds of channels and absolutely nothing good to watch
They made 39 episodes a year back then. The 70 episodes The Munsters had was the same as a Six year or longer series of today's 10-13 episode seasons.

The Munsters weren't from my time, but I grew up watching them on the old TV land channel. Classic GEM just like The Addams family.
I loved watching this show as a kid. One of my favorite episodes is when Herman buys a car from fair deal dan. When he gets home with the car it falls apart. He goes to return the car but fair deal dan has packed up and skedaddled. Great show...They just don't make 'em like that anymore.

How about when Herman tries out for the Los Angeles Dodgers and manager Leo Durocher? Herman could consistently hit the ball further than Babe Ruth or Hank Aaron but he was a Dick “Dr. Strangeglove” Stuart in the field, ending Herman’s tryout with the Dodgers.
If Herman had tried out for an American League team in 1973, he could have been one of the first and greatest hitting designated hitters in the history of Major League Baseball.
PS I also loved the episode where Marilyn and then Herman end up wearing a ring with the infamous “Fregosi curse” on it.
The New York Mets had their own “Fregosi curse,” when they very foolishly traded the future All-Time MLB strikeout leader and Hall of Famer “No-Hit” Nolan Ryan in exchange for the by-then washed up Jim Fregosi of the California Angels, easily one of baseball’s all-time rotten/stinker trades.

Herman's big laugh just makes me giggle...he was the best, along with everyone else on the show. I watched many episodes in the early 80's in high school in ND after school. Great to see the show Cozi here...one of my favorites for sure!

Man...I was 6 in the fall of '64. I remember The Munsters though. I'm glad they switched to the Eddie Munster we know and love bcuz that kid in the pilot was terrible. The pilot Lily was wrong too.
DeCarlo was brilliant. Her comic timing is fabulous, and even more amazing when you consider she was a dramatic actress before taking on Lily. She didn't just mail it in either, she was on board and helped make this show legendary despite its short run.
The Munsters scared the crap out of me, from age 6 to 8, but I had to watch it because of my six older siblings. To this day, Eddie & Grandpa still freak me out! But there was Marilyn, who even then I had fallen for!

LOL...... Reading comments, I see endless people saying how great it was to be a kid during those times growing up with shows like this.
Guess what? I grew up in the 80's/90's and guess what shows I grew up to? MUNSTERS!, Adams Family, Patty Duke, Denis the Menace.... One of the last things mentioned in this video was how it is syndicated even now... meaning you guys were not the only generation lucky enough to have shows like this around. Ah ya, I missed one of top greats Beverly Hillbillies along with their spin-offs, petticoat junction/green acres. Thank god for reruns so I was too lucky because when it was old and on its 1000000th time airing, it was brand new to me :). And growing up, the channel was nickelodeon's spin-off that really brought the old stuff back to life and spawned its own full time channel Nick at Night. Before that all you could get ahold of really was Adams Family and Munsters on mainline tv, the rest was more newer shows or the more popular bigger hit old shows like gomer pyle andy griffith and such. When Nick at Night happened and my tv did not go dead after 10-11:-00 every night and kept playing shows instead of that "white noise" that dominated late night tv. One show I miss to this day is MR ED!!!! I remember the last "marathon" they did..... they did it with the promise that it "will never be aired again" "this is the last time" and I was thinking "ya right, it will be back on next year or 2 at the VERY most" lol....... to this day, MrED has been dead to tv :(.

In my picture collection is a picture of the Munster set in Color, it wasnt during shooting or with any actors around, just a picture of the set with a more modern camera, so not even a "technicolor" color photo, but a real color photo of the set :)
O ya and I did get to meet Donna Douglas once, she came to my church. Much older than she was back then but still wore the blue jeans with rope belt and shit and could still do that famous whistle lol.
Sometimes I play some Earl Scruggs at work and a few of the "kids" are like WTF is THAT, and I tell em they know one of his songs and they assure me they dont..... until I say Beverly Hillbilly theme and they instantly have a connection to Earl Scruggs.... so dont give up on the younger generation quite yet :)

@@kellymccance1342 Nope, I met her in the place the "Beverly Hillbillies" actually came from... NW Arkansas. In their first episode they gave clues to where they were. Pearl asked Jed if he remembered the time his dad took them to see the new moving picture show in Eureeke Springs (which is like 30 mins from my house). And... when the razorback piglet got into granny's still (they a MEAN drunk!). Later on in the series they visit Silver Dollar City in Branson. Sure that is in Missouri but it was an actual road trip for them. (like 2 hour drive from my house). They were 100% from the Ozarks in NW Arkansas.
I was 4 in 1964 and I watched The Munsters during both seasons of its run, refusing to abandon it for Batman even though so many other kids of the day had. RIP Fred Gwynne, Al Lewis, Yvonne de Carlo and Beverley Owen. I'm glad I have the Peacock streaming video channel; so I can binge-watch both seasons of the show.
Yeh, I found them on Peacock just a few weeks back and binge watch them. Netflix has a new release of The Munsters as Herman and Lilly met. It's slow and goofy, the actors are good, and it's about an hour 50 long. We enjoyed it.

Its kind of depressing to know Fred Gwynne hated being Herman Munster, because so many of us Loved ole Herman. It was that wonderful combination of Frankenstein’s Monster meets Ward Clever that everyone loved, and you add to it Fred’s natural comedic timing, and his sort of Lou Abbott bumblery , it truly made a lovable character, as proven with the passage of time
Nothing like the 1960s. This show and the birth of the greatest sci-fi show still running. My parents were lucky. Both 1964. They grew up decent. Now you get today, where you have the Kardashians and the Duggars. I prefer classic tv instead of modern tv. And I'm only 13. I got great friends, good school, but I just want something besides Ghost Adventures and Doctor Who to watch.
I enjoyed the Munster's and the Aadams Family very much while growing up. Someone of the day thought to interview a psychiatrist about the shows thinking they would trash them. The psychiatrist declared them to be the two most wholesome and loving family shows on TV.
A true classic! Loved this as a kid and still do.

as a kid I was really excited when this came out and I flipped over recognizing Herman and Grandpa from one of my favorite shows, Car 54 . All the actors fit those parts so well you can’t even imagine anyone else even being thought of. Back when TV was for the whole family and not rude and crude like today’s sitcoms. My Grandfather had Charles Addams books and I read those as a kid ,so when the Munsters and Addams Family came out I was ecstatic!

One of the greatest shows on tv durning the 60's.....
It was truly a great show. I have many fond memories of the show. I loved the show and still catch it from time to time. I wish there were shows like this still today. I was lucky to grow up in this era.

It's a shame that the show didn't last longer and We lost the Adams Family also. It was a punch in the gut for Us millions that loved to laugh at monsters.
I got to watch the Munsters in reruns as a kid and loved all the characters though Herman was my favorite. Pat was pretty but Beverley was soo cute.
i loved this show as a kid.. and watched reruns for decades.. its amazing it only lasted a few seasons.. it was hilarious, had A list actors, and great set ups and scenes.. this, and the Addams Family, were absolute MUST SEE TV back then..
Fred Gwynne was also in "Pet Sematary", My Cousin Vinnie" to name a few. Ivonne DeCarlo had a long list of movie credits..and was gorgeous in her own right..
and lets not forget the cars... ooooooh. loved those dragster styled hot rods.. even had models of them later on i put together, painted, was really proud of..
A Wonderful trip down a long memory lane... some of this i had completely forgotten, glad to see the Munsters in all their glory again.. thanks so much ! !
They use to promote the show by traveling to movie theaters. They came to our local theater in Queens NY with the car and I had a chance to meet them long before conventions today. I must have been 8 years old then.

Fred Gwynne was robbed in the Oscar for the movie " My cousin Vinny". He should've won for the best supporting actor. Not even nominated too. What were they thinking?
Happy Halloween! I grew up in the in the 1960's. Did not discover "The Munsters" until the early 1970's. By far the best of the best of the spooky 1960's T.V. series (The Addams Family, Bewitched etc.) Seen every episode at least 10 or more times, thank the T.V. gods for Re-runs! I enjoy this show to this day. Especially around the Halloween season. Brings back good memories of our generations childhood. Makes one forget, if even for 30 minutes, of all the bad things going on today. Thanks for the memories!
Absolutely loved this show... Collecting all the Munster model cars, action figures, and bubble gum cards sure was great fun... Great memories!!!
The show was definitely very innocent & very credible. The actors made it so & that's why after half a century "The Munsters" continues unto eternal syndication & that's a lot of bolts for such a show--pure chemistry. RMA, Bakersfield, Ca.
Reruns here in GB on BBC 2 and Channel 4 in the '80's introduced me to The Munsters, The Phil Silvers Show, The Addams Family, Car 54 (Where are you?) and The Beverly Hillbillies. All some of my favourite comedies.
I grew up watching this, one of my all-time favorite TV series. A timeless classic.
Fred Gwynne was a really good actor. It's hard to pull off comedy and play stupid but still come across as completely sincere. He could do straight man and funny man. He really was an acting talent. It's a shame he wasn't brought back to do more movies or another TV show. Watching Edward Hermann, who's a solid actor himself, look terrible in the part really gives an idea of how talented he was.
I never saw Pet Cemetery (plan to, for Fred) and may rent a few other of the less well known parts he did. He had great screen presence in Secret of my Success though he was barely on screen for 5 minutes and Cotton club he played a bouncer and barely said 12 words so that really wasn't much of a part. He nailed it in Cousin Vinny though. He was absolutely perfect.
Not everyone ages gracefully. Sometimes it's genetics, not diet or exercise. Sometimes it's illness. Unless you know her well, it's kinda silly to make assumptions triple H.
I've also read, it's healthy to put on a little weight as we get older. Staying thin might actually not be healthy when you're in your 70s. Strange as that may sound. Not that you should be fat, but it's OK to put on a few.

This,without a doubt, is the FUNNIEST sitcom ever! I'm old ,when Star Trek came on I watched 👀 The Muensters ,When The Addams Family came on ,I watched 👀 Lost In Space. One of my favorite episodes is when Herman is taking pictures in the park,and, the statue came to life and ran 🏃♂️ away!!! PRICELESS!! Did I say old? I meant old school 🏫
One of my very favorite TV shows when I was growing up. Loved how they so valued good manners and good citizenship. Trivia note : Every episode contained the use of fast motion filming of some sort or another. Film speeded up. Always funny.
The original Universal monster movies were all in black & white, that was probably another reason the series was such a hit in B&W, it just fit better in context. Also, one of the very very BEST theme songs ever!
The theme (and all the music in the show) was written by Jack Marshall, a jazz guitarist.
