  • Behold, two of the spookiest TV and MOVIE cars ever built! Dennis gets a close up look at the insane Drag-U-La coffin car dragster. It's a casket on wheels! Plus, we pile into the Munster Koach and FREAK OUT the neighborhood! In the Munsters episode titled Hot Rod Herman, Herman Munster loses the Koach in a drag race so Grandpa Munster builds the Drag-U-La to win back the Koach. "The Munsters" was a hit TV show in the 1960's.

This guy owns at least four of the cars that shaped my fascination with custom vehicles when i was growing up in the 60's
    1. The Red Baron
    2. The Monkees GTO Wagon
    3. The Munster Coach
    4. Dragula
I was a poor little kid in Spokane Valley in the 60's but was able to go to World of Wheels, Autorama and HotWheels tours. I could not sleep in the nights leading up to the Car Shows and it took weeks to regain my normal sleep patterns after. It made my childhood perfection out of what most would think was a horrible time. So good to see and hear them again!

Used to love going to The World Of Wheels. Went to one in about 1980 I believe in Boston. What a show. Paul Revere and The Raiders as Musical guests, Adam West in full costume with The Batmobile speaking and signing autographs and The King Mr. Barris roaming the floor with this great jacket on festooned with patches of all his creations talking with anyone would cared to talk with him. What a great time. Still one of my fondest memories. He told me a great story of how he kitted out a motor home for Elvis. He had built the drivers seat to fit Elvis' body perfectly by taking a mold of him sitting. Elvis asked George to take a "test drive" with him. They didn't come back for three days!

Those shows in the 60s were so good, even 1 or 2 season shows are still rotated in syndication today. Can you imagine, The Honeymooners only ran for 1 season? Yet, it's so great, people think it ran for years. Imagine a 1 or 2 season show from today even being picked up in syndication, let alone able to be seen year round? Just not worth it because people aren't going to watch as apposed to 60s shows that are loved by young and old alike. No profanity, no immorality, nudity, sex, or violence. Just goes to show you that good wholesome entertainment is always going to outshine the opposition.
That said, one of the things I remember having tears rolling down my face from laughter, was when Herman stuck his feet thru the floorboards to stop the car. I don't remember the episode, but I just couldn't stop laughing as smoke was coming off his feet.

The 1964 Dragula Coffin Dragster was sold for $430,000 on Mecum Auctions Kissimee 2022, aired March 14. The thing that geeked me out was that S1E36 Hot Rod Herman May 27, 1965 was airing simultaneously. I paused the auction, watched the full episode on Cozi TV, then time traveled 57 yrs to the present and watched the current auction. It was eerie and quite fascinating. Coincidence?!?

Yes, listen closely, some exhaust valves are sticking, possibly due to weak valve springs, carbon build up, or worn valve guides /valves, also the steering column and wheel has a lot of play in it, this car is show piece, it's really designed to not go any further or faster than around the block, like they're doing in this video, still a cool piece from a cool TV show!

Leave it to George Barris to build a car that can bring a smile to everyone's face. Those cars were featured in one of my favorite episodes, the guy that Grandpa was racing stole his parachute and Herman had to grab the car and stop it by dragging his feet, his shoes were smoking it was hilarious. Also the next day after Herman got his car back they show him driving and the engine falls out and is left running on the street as he continues on.

The George Barris and the Ed "Big Daddy" Roth creations were available as scale model kits back when I was into that. I can't remember if they were Revell or Monogram or maybe even another brand I've forgotten. Then there was a series of models for Frankenstein, The Mummy, etc. What a hoot to paint and build, and paint some more. I migrated from that to 1/32 scale slot cars, quickly soldering up my own chassis from brass tubing and rod. That was the kind of hobby where I learned a lot about materials and fabrication, still an interest of mine to this day.
