      That quote shows that Billboard hires people who know nothing about classical music. Those who do not at least know SOMETHING about the classics don't know enough about music theory to have a significant opinion. One man's opinion, but based on 70 years of playing various (and basically different) musical instruments.

    Mitch has said that this was the most difficult for them to sing. No words, just instruments. They deserved the Grammy for that and the editing. You need to watch Gangnam Style and Gangnam Style bloopers. 2 separate videos. Superfruit puts their bloopers at the end of their vids, ptx made a whole new one for this.

    FYI, I went to a concert of PTX and afterwards had a stage pass to be able to meet and talk with them for a few hours with 9 others and that question was asked about the first song you watched Sugar Plum Fairy song. They all never was in the same room for the entire video, they all had a separate room with green background and they had multiple screens that they looked at when they lite up (when they all looked in the same direction and all around) and all of them had been laced together at certain marks of the video, this is how Scott explained the making of that video.

    The second feature, with all the dancers and the enormous drapes, was the opening number of their 2022 Christmas Concert. SO very Pentatonix! I've been lucky enough to go to three of their concerts, and they love to open with an astonishing, crazy, "these are the rock stars you've been waiting for" opening. As to the third iteration of the nutcracker suite, they've done quite a bit for the NFL. They were the opening number for Monday (or Sunday?) Night Football, with some hot dancing as the fab five emerge from the tunnel onto the football field, singing a slight reworking of their original song, "Sing," which is SO GOOD that you should show those two together, one after the other, in a single review. There! Sorted! Now get to it, please!

    Avi brought this idea to the group. He said the video was a fast shoot since they each were filmed individually. His part was just 10 minutes to film. If you want to see how silly they can get watch Gangnam style bloopers. Very funny.

  • @Badger77722

    While I agree that the videos for both Daft Punk and Dance are absolutely amazing, their Grammys for those songs were both for the arrangements - the videos didn't enter into the picture at all. Only their Grammy for Jolene was for Performance, and even that would have been just the audio, not the video itself.
    The Christmas Spectacular live show included a pair of dancers named Cost N' Mayor, who accompanied them on the entire tour and also appeared in the video for Kid On Christmas with Meghan Trainor.
    Someone in the NFL broadcasts must have been a big Pentatonix fan, because not only was this used as the intro to Fox Sunday Night football, but their song "Sing" was used (with highly modified lyrics) as the Thursday Night Football intro as well, with PTX making the same type of appearance - walking down the "tunnel" as the song went on.

    Cost N Mayor are the dancers who traveled with Pentatonix and performed during their concerts on their 2022 Christmas tour. I attended their Denver concert and was quite annoyed that the lighting made it hard to see Cost N Mayor. If you want a better look at Cost N Mayor, check out the official video of "Kid on Christmas," from _Holidays Around The World,_ where Cost N Mayor played the dancing video engineers. (As a bonus, you get to see Kevin sporting an Afro wig - it's a very retro video, meant to look like _American Bandstand_ or a similar television show.)

I could only see the current soloist, so no watching Kevin beatboxing while they were singing or looking for Scott taking over bass harmonies during Matt's solos; Cost N Mayor dancing but basically visible only enough so I could tell that I was missing something; and every once in a while the spotlights would sweep across the audience and you can't see anything with a spotlight suddenly shining in your eyes.

I look at fan videos of earlier concerts and you can see everything (or at least everything the fan thought was important - Mitch singing but not Kevin coming back on stage, for instance), and suddenly now they're giving concerts where you can see almost nothing. I got an email after the concert I attended asking if I'd gotten any video of the concert and I told them that not only had I not gotten video I didn't think they were going to find any fan videos because the lighting made it virtually impossible.

    The person you are looking for the name of is Ben Bram.. he has been referred to as the 6th member of PTX and has been with them since the very beginning. He remains their arranger, music director, producer, engineer.. he is genius at his job. He and Scott were in college together in Scott's 1st year when Scott contacted Kirstin (also in 1st year college), and Mitch (about to graduate High School), to see if they'd like to meet and go compete at the Sing Off, a TV A Capella competition (which they won) in 2011. Love Pentatonix. I love their spirit. SB19 reminds me of them. Really awesome melodies, voices. They really wanted to sing and they went through a lot of pushback because no recording label wanted to produce acapella music. What they are now is a result of their hardwork and dedication to their craft. They really deserve that star on Hollywood walk of fame. I would love it if SB19 had a collab with them.

    Ben Bram arranges songs for them (or rather with them, since they like to be involved) and runs their studio, but Ed Boyer is their production engineer. So Ben probably filmed it and then sent the raw footage on to Ed Boyer for editing, but I'm extrapolating from a very limited understanding of what's involved in producing a music video, and they may not have had their own studio yet when this was made - they didn't when they made "Daft Punk." You can find interviews with both Ben Bram and Ed Boyer on TH-cam; those might give you more detail.
    I do know that they typically record each of their audio tracks separately and then lip-synch in the video, but they're actually singing when they lip-synch which makes it easy to match up the audio and video. Since they're already familiar with the technique of recording audio tracks separately and then layering them together it wouldn't take much of a leap for them to do the same with video, especially after some of the video tricks they used on "Daft Punk" (which was released before "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy"). And it's obvious that they filmed each member's video separately in "Daft Punk" since they only had one ring light, and it appears behind each singer.

    • @margretrosenberg420
      @margretrosenberg420 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@N_F414 I wouldn't know about that. I've seen that there *are* interviews with both Ed Boyer and Ben Bram, but I haven't actually watched the interviews yet; they're rather long (I've tried a couple of times but I kept falling asleep, which speaks more to how tired I was than anything about the interview).
      I know a grand total of two things for sure: Everyone involved with Pentatonix is incredibly good at what they do, and that includes Ben Bram and Ed Boyer; and in addition to having talent that is off the charts the trio have been incredibly lucky when it comes to finding the people they need when they need them. I mean, listen to the story about how they found Kevin - it sounds like a fairy tale. The perfect person just happens to have uploaded the perfect video to TH-cam just before they went looking, and then he's actually willing to join these strangers as long as they let him graduate from his pre-med program at Yale first?! Yeah, like THAT could happen in real life - except it did. 🤷 I wish I had that kind of luck (and as long as I'm wishing I wish I had a voice like Mitch or Kirstin).
      I'm also aware that a very large part of their luck is the fact that they're able to recognize an opportunity when they see it, and to recognize talent when they see it. (Also, when it's time to ask someone to join them their own good will shines through, and that makes it easier to persuade people - they aren't recruiting for a business as much as they're asking someone to join their family.) Look at Matt. As much as I enjoy the music they put out with Avi, and as much as I enjoy the music Avi is currently making, I'm not one of the fans who are constantly grieving over Avi's exit from the band. So far, Matt has exhibited a range that is less than Avi's in their official releases, but when I heard him sing in their concert in Denver last year I would swear that his lowest note was as low as anything I ever heard from Avi - true basso profundo, blowing-the-speakers low - while his highest note was a good deal *higher* than Avi can produce. I think Matt's voice is still developing, but I also think that it's already better than Avi's, and I expect it to continue improving for at least another year or two. And it is to the great credit of the trio and Kevin that they recognized that talent years before it became obvious to the rest of us.
