hello, i recently came across your channel. and im probably going to binge watch the crap out of your videos. (btw, thanks for the Poisonous Vs. Infect Vs. Toxic comparison)
Hello Everyone, I hope you are all having a great day. I would like to make a correction that I needed to remove from the video regarding the interaction between infect with the other two abilities. Infect while not dealing damage to a player in the form of normal damage, is still dealing damage with poison counters. This interaction still works with poisonous and Toxic and will trigger both infect and toxic or poisonous effects on an attack. If you have a 1/1 creature with infect and toxic 1 or poisonous 1. On combat damage to opponent, they will receive 2 poison counters. I hope this helps to clarify any interactions I left out. I hope you all have a great day!
Great video I wanted to add that there are some weird pseudo-poisonous type of abilities that exist and people may be interested in I wouldn't say they are great but they do exist. First up there are a trio of cards of Swamp Mosquito, Suq'Ata Assassin,Crypt Cobra who all give poison counters as soon as they aren't blocked. No combat damage necessary. Also there are 2 cards Marsh Viper, and Pit Scorpion which as far as I'm aware there abilities behave in the exact same way as poisonous but don't have any errata giving them poisonous. Update Edit: after looking up the cards and rereading them turns out they trigger off any damage not just combat damage so slightly better than poisonous. This is also true with Sabertooth Cobra. Finally Serpent Generator can generate 1/1s with the same clause "of any damage = poison counter". Sabertooth Cobra only gives poison counters if the opponent doesn't pay 2 mana after being hit.
Does toxic really not trigger on a creature with infect? Because Flensermite has infect and lifelink yet lifelink still triggers, meaning damage was dealt, by that logic toxic and poisonous should still trigger, right?
Amelia you are right. I have looked deeper into this and I was wrong about this interaction. Thank you for pointing this out. Damage is still being dealt with infect and it will cause poisonous and toxic to trigger
It’s all apart of the process. I just appreciate someone caught my mistake before I got to many views and confused some people. I did make some edits to the video to remove the incorrect statements. Thank you and have a great day!
Worth noting as well that toxic and infect are specifically not triggers. They cannot be stifled because they do not use the stack, they modify how damage is translated into results, much like lifelink.
To be honest I'd like them to just errata poisonous to be toxic, it's unlikely to happen, but there are too many abilities already and the difference between these two is just so minimal that it would change nothing and the cards could work together in a nicer way. Might be an unpopular opinion tho, I don't know
Unpopular! Because being able to Stifle or Tale's End the final poison counter is great. I'm sorry people on arena will timer stall or just fall asleep and not realize they have priority, but IRL and in commander, more interactivity is better
I'm new to magic, so I hope I could understand Infect a bit better, it deals dmg to creatures in the form of -1 / -1 counters, do the -1 counters stay til the opponent's creature is dead ? Or do the -1 counters heal on the clean up step ? To which on the next player's turn, they don't have -1 counters on that creature...?! I hope this doesn't sound to confusing...
No I understand what you are asking. Instead of dealing damage, it puts -1/-1 counts on the creature. For example if a 2/2 infect creature deals damage to a 5/5 creature. the 5/5 will become a 3/3 with two -1/-1 counters on it. The counters will stay on the creature until it dies and they will fall off once it enters another zone like exile or the graveyard. When dealing with effects that place -1/-1 on creatures make sure to look out for the word counters. If it is not present then the damage will heal in clean up. I hope this helped and if you have any other questions please feel free to reach out. I hope you have a great day!
im new to mtg and am playing a toxic rat deck, and have noticed that toxic is like 'walking the line' on if people will have fun playing with you or not, but infect is straight up crossing the line into 'no fun' territory
Hmmm im not completly agreed when u said infect its the most powerfull. Infect its very strong but in short games. Usually in a commander game infect get out of gas after take one or two players. In a long time game defenses are too strong to get the third player. Toxic its slower than infect but its more relevant in long games because the oppobet get the hit and lose life with toxic and get the poison counters. So its easier take down by combat or poison counters.
So if infect deals last -1/-1 damage to a creature. What happens when lets say a 5/5 infect creature hits a player. Is that 5 poison counters to that player?
That is correct. Their was a combo in standard at one point where you could buff up a 1/1 elf with infect and pump it on a single turn to a 10/10 and infect someone out with a single hit
It's not really accurate to say there are only 2 cards in mtg that have poisonous. The keyword may only appear on 1 creature and 1 aura, but it has existed by description and mechanic on several cards prior to them. I built a poison Deck prior to either of them existing. From memory, there was: - Marsh Viper - Swamp Mosquito - Pit Scorpion - Another snake that had the name "cobra" in it. There was also an artifact from a very old set (Legends, or The Dark or something from around then) that could create tokens with poisonous on them (or could give poison counters from combat damage). ... this isn't the first time I've seen this claim made. I really wish the old cards had been errata'd. Either that, or at least those cards would show up in a search to avoid this "2" number being thrown around so much.
That's very true! When I was doing my research the only two that popped up were those two so I didn't know there were more at the time. Thank you so much for pointing this out and I hope you have a great day!
Before watching: Infect is better for just killing a player outright with a single strike, while Poisonous/Toxic are more relaxed ways of applying the counters. Poisonous/Toxic are really just the same thing with one having more support.

that's so cool you became a fan after this video

Cool Video, Thanks
Easy question: infect.
You can pump it up to do more poison damage, and the -1,-1 counters stay behind on creatures.

@@LostPlaneswalker Glad to be of help! Well, I guess you kinda have to redo the video now though, sorry about that.

@@ianlittlefield8448 I'm aware I just didn't think of another way to say it, though I see how that can be confusing, I should clarify.

i don't like that idea, I already made a deck using every poison mechanic available, making them the same would not help the old cards.

thank you so much!

Plus you can have toxic and infect.
Yes you can! Have a great day!
A 4m video? Does this pass the mustard to make you any money? Imma watch it all the way through with premium. Does that do anything?
