- Join us for this fun video on Painting a Western Christmas. This winter landscape is a lot of fun! This is a longer lesson video just over 2 1/2 hours. The fun part about painting westerns is you get to paint a landscape, animals, and portrait all at the same time.
Some have an issue with black screen during the last of this video. We have made a PART 2 that corrects this and can be watched here..

David when you get to the 2hour and 4 min. mark everytime you lean over to your palette the screen does go off I can still hear you but the screen is black, you sit back and you come back on
I see that Janet. Must be a bad upload. Let me see what we can do about it. It does that for about 15 minutes or so. We will get a good video to you.

Some of the main points you have brought out about using the brush like a pencil and keep moving and time your work is wonderful information for beginning landscapes with acrylics. Your Western Christmas/Winter landscape is very impressive. Like the way you add a star to the horse then angle downward with your paint. Thanks!

I love your work. I am 65 and want to learn how to paint beautiful landscapes, animals and horses are my favorite. My health is not very good but I will try to learn. It would be so great if I was good enough to sell some. It sure would help with my husband and I on ; social security doesn’t go far.

The video towards the last half going black, made me think something is wrong with my computer or t.v. screen. I enjoyed watching your attention to the fine details on the face.
There is a part 2 of this video that shows the last portion of the painting.
I have seen horses without a noseband for their bridle but most seem to have that band across the nose attaching to the other side. I've always thought that the idea of putting a piece of metal in a horse's mouth was a real objectionable action. Can't be good for the Horse. But there are not that many headband bridles that don't have the bit. Guess that's why I don't ride. Great painting. I can see why you might want to keep it for yourself.
No, not all bridles have nose bands. I have 3 that don't. For many years I rode a large thoroughbred that loved his curb bit. It had a roller built in that he loved to play with. The music at the beginning of the video is a nice added touch. This Western painting is beautiful! I just painted some roses...not as easy as you make it look...mine looked OK. I wasn't able to make them look fluffy. I used the extender so maybe I just applied too much paint without letting it dry enough. I could not get the movement I wanted. I painted from this video~ Acrylic Roses Mastering Roses Vol 6. TY David
Fluffy is going to come from brush calligraphy. If you use to much Extender then the calligraphy will be too soft.
@@JansenArtEducation I viewed your video about correction & that helped a lot. I wasn't using enough paint. With more, I am seeing calligraphy along with depth & brush technique also. Having fun practicing. TY David
A wonderful early Christmas gift: a holiday western landscape! This tutorial was exceptional…..loved the attention to detail and length of video. Although, I have never considered completing a western-theme painting (mainly because of the complexity: landscape, animals, and portrait/human figures), I very much enjoyed watching your demonstration! I have watched your videos for years but you painted roses with your fingers. They are beautiful but my passion is animals and I love western scenes. I don't agree with you when you say that westerns aren't popular now. We are all expected to like the new improved style of the month. Westerns are classics and you do them wonderfully. However, the Christmas one had blackouts. I struggled through because it was so great. Hope we get a repaired one. Keep up the good work with westerns. I have a latex allergy so acrylics are not possible. I paint in oils only. Do you ever teach oils?
It is true westerns are not as popular as other styles. Gallery sales show this as a fact. I love to paint them though and they are classic, however, if you're an international selling artist like myself, they are not nearly as popular as other genres. The trouble with the video was fixed immediately. If you look at the video description for this video, you will see the link for part 2 which corrects the black screen.

I have not painted with oils for many years. I got oil poisoning at 25 and switched to acrylics. Older generation acrylics had latex in them. Modern 2K acrylic paint systems don't and not for several years. I was the chemist that designed the Heritage paint system in 2008 that I use in my videos. I have been a paint chemist for 35 years. Heritage Acrylics has no latex, is a completely "green" product that does not affect the environment, and is completely non-toxic. Our company produces only environmentally safe, and non-toxic products. Thanks so much! More westerns coming.

Awesome video tutorial. I also piece together images in photoshop to set up my reference images. It really helps me get the perspective and shapes correctly. I mostly work in watercolors now. I love horses and winter. New subscriber :)

All 400 of my videos use the same paint. I was a paint chemist for 35 years and developed the Heritage Acrylics to do the techniques I show in ALL my videos on the channel. All the links are in the video description. All acrylics are different and do not work the same. Find one that works for what you like and stick with it to learn more.
