One of the people behind Ballz also went on to make Dogz and Catz, one of the first big pet games period, and would later be bought out by Ubisoft and promptly ran into the ground under the generic name of "Petz".

Between the flickering and bad hitboxes, it feels like an anime fight where both characters are half-teleporting to avoid punches.

I hate to "ackschually", but there was in fact a Donkey Kong 2. It was a Game and Watch Dual Screen series game that was a sequel to specifically the original Donkey Kong G&W game. Thing is, DKJR was also a Game and Watch, so it being DK 2 is completely out the window, which leads me to wonder what the FUCK these games are.

From playing Ballz, I can say with full confidence that Yoko breaks the game. You just jump on their head and deal unavoidable damage (which is the only way to beat the bosses in the single player) and there’s even a glitch where you can make the opponent headless.
Edit: there’s a few other cheese strategies, but overall, grabs and jumps just guarantee wins.

18:16 the reason why your hp drained was because time was up, as denoted by the screens in the background counting down. you can also see how both players started dying then, this was likely because making animations for every character getting timed out was too much so they just opted to forcefully kill one or the other instead.

So with Nes games, there can only be 4 sprites on 1 horizontal line at a time or else flickering occurs. These character sprites aren't actually one sprite, but a grid of sprites for each character. So if one character is 2 sprites wide and one is three, there's going to be flickering, but peach for instance is thin so they doesn't flicker when there's 2 of them standing next to each other

the jumbotrons in the background of ballz are so bizarre they almost feel like an arg, the whole game aesthetic feels like robotripping during a fever

Fun facts about Kart Fighter:
Two of Luigi's combos in this game (flying kick and uppercut) don't have any defined button inputs, meaning only the AI can do them
Bowser's sprite literally cannot be any larger, because of some annoying sprite limits (OAM only has room for 64 sprites) and they didn't bother using the 8x16 sprite mode
The high-score screen does work, but it's very difficult to even get 8th place, especially since you _lose_ 2550 points if you win without taking damage instead of gaining 2550
Something I never realized until now, some of the weird as hell art in the background of Ballz are actually tied to attacks, like that spit attack always caused the weird green sick head thing to appear on the screens
But I have no idea why there's like 4 different screens in completely different language

@@grayfruit okay so for context. At 1:58 during the Kart Fighter section you talk about how you’re playing this on a D-pad. In retrospect you likely just meant that playing a fighting game on an NES controller is bad but when I heard this I was really confused because I was under the impression most people used the D-pad for fighting games outside of arcades.

I think the health running out at 18:25 is a hidden time mechanic, after enough time has passed the health just starts dropping so that the player with higher health wins.
Edit: The time isn't hidden, it just appears on the screens in the background so it was difficult to see.

after time runs out in balls (you can tell by the weird countdown on the screens showing pictures of numbers) rather than program a whoever has the highest health wins everyone gets their health drained equally quickly and whoever has lower health will naturally die first. Although this can be affected by the fact that you are still fighting.

I think you got a consequent edited version of Ballz, I remember Vinny playing it and the music having some girl's two moaning sounds instead of the guy going "Uooh!" I suppose they thought that was too suggestive and he had to change it

i remember playing ballz on the psp when i was like 6 or 7 that game was awesome
Bit late to bring it up, but the reason the hitboxes are jank is because it's an NES game so collision detection is based on the sprites (which are flickering due to a limitation of the NES that only allows a certain number of sprites on a horizontal line at a given time, I believe the maximum was 6 which this game appears to be pushing right up on). Essentially every time a sprite flickers its hitbox does as well, and since the sprites swap frames (rendered one frame, not rendered the next, rendered the frame after, etc. etc.) you essentially have a 50% chance of the sprites just phasing past each other because they're never rendered at the same time.
