    So many of the 2024 model laptops from all manufacturers seem like a downgrade from their 2023 range.

      Yeah, in 2023, Lenovo Legion downgraded their laptops to make room for a crappy Legion 9i. Now every other brand is ruining their laptops.
      Thank goodness I'm not buying another laptop for a while. I'd be mad.

      Yea I was thinking that. I mean the M16 r2 sacrificed a ton of performance the r1 m16 offered and got rid of the Alienware design language for something much more basic and dell like.

When I play a game and this power blink red the game starts lagging but it hasn't been like this befor. 2 questions that I have. 1. Why did it start happening? 2. How to fix it exactly? what steps should I do? The temps don't surpass 100 most of the time when this happens

    Excellent video. Question: Can you run the XPS 16 - which brings a 130 watt power brick - via USB-C PD connection to a monitor? Or are monitors power deliveries to weak to run the XPS 16? Or is it that the battery loading would take longer, but the laptop can run endlessly on the monitor USB-C power delivery? Thanks.

    • @MashITTech
      @MashITTech  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is a little tricky to answer but if your monitor has 100w+ PD it will work fine. At 100w battery charging may take longer but you get almost full performance. If you have a 60-100w PD it will probably work with reduced performance and any lower than 60 may cause you issues

    All your reviews are very informative! I currently have last year’s all AMD Alienware m17 r5 with a 4K 120hz screen and a mechanical keyboard. The 4K ips display is nice but I can’t help but think that an OLED Screen paired with a great mechanical keyboard and a high end GPU and CPU would be an amazing experience. Hopefully in the future Dell starts doing this with their Alienwares. I’m a big fan of OLED displays. I have an LG OLED tv and I just ordered a steam deck OLED.

    Hi Dave,
    I bought the 51m r2 in 2020 after watched your video. now its time to upgrade, do you think a 4070ti + i7 14700 would be sufficient to play most the game these days? or should I just go i9 14900+ 4080 super or it even worth to go 4090 to unlock the full potential? I've a budget between 4-6k Aud for gaming PC, not a laptop this time.
    I've already bought surface 9 and mba for work.

    • @MashITTech
      @MashITTech  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely either the 14700 or ryzen 7800x3d if a gaming build. If you are going small then the 4070ti is a great option as you can get some decent 2 slot solutions but if you are going the atx route then get the 4080super or 4090 depending on budget. I have just started doing builds on the channel and got a range of cards I will be using, loving the pro art 4080 super as it is compact for a 4080 yet still performs like a beast

      Yeah, the amount of BSODs I had just using Edge in 2021 was awful (when I was still using Windows 10). I literally had a RESOURCE_NOT_OWNED BSOD just using a touch screen on a laptop with Microsoft Edge open back then; it was a known problem that took a while to be fixed by Microsoft.
      And don't get me started on the color management banding on the XPS 7590 (XPS 15 from 2019). They literally said to customers they wouldn't fix it.

It is litearlly the perfect laptop. On battery, it's nice and quiet. On mains, it can be very quiet and when I push it, it's not remotely bothersome. The Audio is amazing, easily as good as my MBPro 14 and probably as good as the M1 16" i had a while back. Overall, this is a gem of a laptop and that OLED is absolutely stunning. I'm curious what mode and screen brightness you have this on. Marc Andrew Davis tested it with a 4070 at 40% brightness at 90 htz on optomized mode and got 15 hours battery life on video playback. I am curious what you find so much better on a Mac Book pro. I koow it has hdmi and a full size card reader and longer battery. But you can game on this as well as doing intensive productivity work. It has a better screen, unique design no notch and it's keyboard is not a smudgy mess like the Mac Book. It also has excellent battery life, great speakers and wi fi 7 and the fastest ram available. I'm not saying the Mac is bad it's excellent, but this is every bit as good. I returned my M3 max since i like Windows better. I got the Ultra 9 with a 4070. Is it the best value of course not but it doesn't take away from what it is. Also rare forva Windows computer to be this quietvand cool. Soid review you did.

    • @MashITTech
      @MashITTech  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      had it set to 200nits brightness and default colour mode and optimised. 15 hours seems insane but it sounds like Andrew was using 15hours of local playback? sorry haven't watched his review. running 4k TH-cam over wifi is much more demanding. I am not a big MacBook fan and actually prefer my Thinkpad P1 gen 6 because of the ports, WAN card and keyboard but I did use a MBP m1 max for a while and I did love the speakers, battery life, lack of fan noise and video editing performance due to built in encoders. I also like that I could edit on battery for a few hours due to how efficient the chip was. Of course there are loads of downsides with Macs such as lack of gaming and windows software support, no upgradability at all but everyone has different needs

    SLIGHT CORRECTION: "All of these laptops have soldered ram due to the fact that they use these new Core Ultra CPUS."
    That's somewhat misleading. For instance I just purchased the MSI CreatorPro AI 16 with 32GB and the 185H Core Ultra 9 (same CPU as the highest XPS 16). I then opened it up and replaced the RAM with 96GB RAM which cost me only $300. No soldering iron needed! Yes, Many of the new laptops with Core Ultra do indeed have soldered RAM, but that's just the choice of the manufacturer not 'due to the new CPU'. I think you probably know this and it was just a Freudian slip, but it may be confusing to some viewered. I needed a minimum of 64GB so unfortunately that ruled out a lot of these newer laptops which don't offer above 32GB. Had I chosen the DELL I'd have taken the upgrade to 64GB but all the other factors (no FN or Esc key, lack of air exhausts, weird close together keys, no USB-A really deterred me from this one.)

    I don't trust Dell (or most manufacturers really) when it comes to thin and light laptops with high specs. They overheat like crazy. The last Dell laptop I owned was a Precision 5560 with an NVIDIA RTX A2000 and i7-11850H, and it ran so hot I couldn't even have it on my lap while doing web browsing or playing music. I would often turn on the air conditioner because the amount of heat it radiated was super uncomfortable.

You always give me a good perspective on things and I’d like to try to spread that via my own TH-cam channel. If you have any tips to help me get started with my channel, it would be great! Also, if you have any contacts or if you know anybody who could help me get a review unit of a device, that would be great! Thanks!

Dell’s design team definitely has to start working weekends. I wonder if sales will force it to. Dell seems to be losing the interest of that corner of the market interested in devices that strike a serviceable balance between creativity and performance.

    Dell is throwing up some good price cuts for the XPS 17 to sell out the existing stocks. So if possible, I think it might be sensible to go for that. Obviously, you would miss out the OLED panel, but the 4 thunderbolt USB C ports, along with upgradable RAM and dual SSD slots would more than make up for it in flexibility. And the 13th gen i7 and i9 are no slouches either in terms of performance.
    I think you would get the peak measure of the might of the intel core ultra series when you get the Alienware x16 R2 laptop, where the wattages might be much higher. Eagerly waiting for that review sir……

    • @SouryaDP
      @SouryaDP 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MashITTech I think even the m16 r2 can still give a good measure of the peak performance of the ultra chips at high wattages, so that's still a good thing. Also, I think you can validate the claims about the USB-C PD charging support on the m16 r2.
      Thing is, it is hard to trust the gaming laptop companies about their USB-C PD implementations, as many start putting caps on the minimum and maximum wattages, and some chargers are not supported at all.
      As a side note, the fact that the m16 r2 (which you ordered late) came before the x16 r2 (which you ordered earlier) shows that buyers are not as much interested in the m16 r2 as compared to the x16 r2.
      Also, I think the requirement for soldered RAM for the Intel core ultra chips might take away the upgradability advantage that the m series laptops carry over the x series.

    The XPS 16 is a premium-targeted laptop, so I was not expecting value, and this isn't. I still need to be sold on the new design, form over function with the light-up F-keys. There was a reason Apple ditched these, and they were arguably much more premium: the majority didn't like them.
    I certainly would not have this at the top of my "pro" laptop choice. It does not come close to the MB Pro 16 M3 Pro for metrics and is £400 more expensive for the same spec, though the Mac gets 4GB more RAM countered by the 4070 dGPU vRAM in the XPS.
    But if you are stuck in the Windows world, then the premium choices are few and far between, and they are all now as expensive as or more expensive than Macs!

      Actually, there is the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i. Just Josh was very pleased with the 16 inch model and it costs a lot less but has more performance, better battery life, more ports, and a better keyboard. Again, it's less money!
      Unlike Apple with macOS, Dell isn't the only brand running Windows; HP has the excellent Spectre 14 for former XPS 14 users and the aforementioned Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i is a great choice for former XPS 16 users.
      Sadly, many brands (and even Apple is guilty of this) just do not understand that making your laptops stand our should *not* mean not getting the basics right.

      I did look at the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i. It is similar in price in the UK to the XPS 16, £2440. As I said I am not seeing any cheap premium Windows laptops, be it ultrabooks, pro machines or gaming. I suppose in other regions this may be different.
      FYI the 16-inch HP Spectre with only Core Ultra 7 and 16GB of RAM is £2100 and we do not get a 32GB option so it isn't even worth including. If it had 32GB it would be close to the Yoga and more than the MB Pro 16.
      As someone that uses Macs and Windows, if I was forced to choose only one, then out of all these the MB Pro 16 M3 Pro would win easily (Amazon has had £300 off recently making it even more value agaisnt the rivals!).

    I find the 14 and 16 to be really quite poor value proposition over the compeition. I like the design a lot, but for what they offer, even Razer seems to give better value here. Yeah, this laptop is too much of a downgrade from last year's XPS 17 or even the one from 2020 (when the model was reintroduced) that I would honestly look elsewhere if I wanted something similar. It's clear that Dell isn't even trying to compete with Apple's current MacBook Pros anymore; they're trying to compete with Apple's 2016 - 2019 MacBook Pros, which very few people liked and for good reason; it was a thermal throttling, few ports, form over function mess. It was so much of a mess, as a matter of fact, that they had to abandon that design and return to a different design that was slightly thicker, but allowed for a much better laptop. But of course, Dell is so delayed in their response that now they think that what Apple did and failed at in 2016 was a good idea. It clearly isn't, and I can't see myself ever buying any one of these new XPS laptops because of the touch function row, the bad invisible touchpad, the poor port selection, the underperformance compared to alternatives, the lack of RAM slots, and the reduction to just 1 SSD slot instead of 2 from 2020 - 2023.
    Dell really needs to redo the entire XPS lineup and "follow" the current MacBook Pro ethos, not the 2016 - 2019 MacBook Pro ethos. As somebody who would never buy another Mac, I can say that even Apple now knows how to make a better haptic touchpad and get the basics right, unlike Dell.

      @cameronbosch1213 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @MashITTech I like ports too. To see Dell have a worse port selection than a MacBook Pro _from 2021_ just blows my mind, especially on the XPS 16. Like, there's clearly room for a full-sized SD card slot and a fourth USB-C port. Heck, why not add HDMI 2.1 while they're at it? At that point, it might be similar to the MacBook Pro in that regard, but that would actually be a _good_ thing at that point!

    For me personally, the 2024 model is a downgrade. I have a 17" 4K with 100% AdobeRGB with 500 nits - so my display is brighter and larger, with the same case size. IPS technology is ideal for graphics and design. Two M2 slots, physical function keys (DELL hasn't learned anything from the MacBook Pro disaster). In addition, the dark carbon Surface is much better to concentrate on work. I'll keep it until DELL eliminates the weaknesses of this generation, I suspect in 2-3 years.
