Finally the first proper review of this laptop since the "initial impressions" videos every TH-camr and their mother did a couple of MONTHS ago. Thank you!
I don't think it was the first, but yes, great review summarized perfectly by "if you understand that Dell prioritizes looks and size over performance , this is an amazing laptop". People get XPS's for the aesthetics and the ultra premium feel, as long as it's still very capable. Which is it.
The backlight for the F-row turns off after a while because Dell said people were complaining with last year's XPS 13 that the backlight was too distracting when watching videos in fullscreen. You can change them to stay lit all the time though in BIOS and/or probably some Dell application
Ah thanks for the info. I found in bios how to change the keyboard backlight but cannot see a separate entry for touchbar. I did just switch it always on to stop it happening but it needs better customisation
thanks mate. if it is important to you I will try and cover that area in more detail as it is hard to know what part of the review is important to people and we try not to make them too bloated (though maybe we should?)
I hope Dell bring back physical function keys in the next version of the XPS. I mean, I know I'm saying this about a new release but physical function keys are so useful.
Love your reviews man. I’m looking forward for the review of XPS16 as I have the xps17 and I’m willing to upgrade. Could you focus on the differences in the displays and the internal options. Like the 1200p gets 120hz I think and oled gets 90 only. And then the slower graphics card laptops will get 3 thunderbolt4 connections no vapor chamber but 4070 will get only 2 and the right port will be usb3.2 with advanced Optimus but will get vapor chamber. Also will that port have good bandwidth to connect all the peripherals. I would love you to hear you talk about this specifics and details. Thanks
thank you mate and I will certainly cover your points. Still running tests and benchmarks and hoping to start filming the review Sunday/Monday! Its been a busy couple of weeks with all these new laptops releasing :)
Thanks for this. You are the only one out with a review 😊. I was going to get this, but I'm having second thoughts now. Dell just released the Lattitude 7450, which seems very similar but without the Oled. Do you have any thoughts from past experiences? Thanks
The touch functions keys are a big NO to me, will wait for couple of iterations of xps 14 and see. I hope they will go back to physical buttons in coming versions
I had a MacBook with touch bar and the experience wasn't that great. Not the biggest fan of these function "keys" but everything else looks pretty good.
It has a few competitors to chase in the premium market, such as the MB Air 13/15-inch, the MB Pro 14 M3/Pro, and the Galaxy Book4 Pro. Others, like the Surface Laptop, are coming soon. Pricing based on config comparisons is similar, as these are all premium and, therefore, expensive. The Dell with the dGPU seems a tough buy, £2650 for 32GB/1TB/4050/OLED versus MB Pro 14 M3 Pro with 36GB/1Tb/14-core GPU/miniLED at £2699. I would expect the Mac to dominate in nearly every metric, from performance on battery to battery life, speakers, max brightness, trackpad and keyboard, IO, and so on. As for the ultrabook version of the Dell with 16GB/512GB/ARC/LCD at £1600 falls between the same spec MB Air 13 and 15 inches (£1500 & £1700 respectively). Again, I would plump for the Air, though if used as an ultrabook, I would probably buy the base MB Air 15 over the Dell and save £300 as well as getting a larger display and, again, better metrics. It is going to be a tough year for the XPS and depends on whether consumers are attracted to the design versus a rather average-performing laptop.
totally agree with you and I am contemplating doing a vs against the 14" MacBook Pro. The thing is with Dell, they always release at a stupid price then regularly drop the price in sales or coupons! I don't know why they don't just release them at a more sensible price to start (maybe trying to cash in on early adopters). At its retail price I do not think it is worth it but if the spec I reviewed was nearer 2k then it could be a really good option
I agree. The XPS lineup is too expensive and the decisions they made in 2024 seem out of touch when Apple went the other way and restored ports and made the laptops slightly thicker for more performance, battery life, and better thermals. And that's great to see, even if I will never again buy a MacBook.
@@cameronbosch1213 Like wise, I would never buy a MacBook again. Went over to apple 2 years ago and basically just find the o/s un useable, drag and drop everything etc. No no no. Also had to renew my home insurance recently here in the Uk and was told most insurers would not insure any Apple products as they fail too frequently and are too costly to repair. I can vouch for that having a MacBook Air M1 and M2, both of which have failed!! I don't get all this hype about Apple. The M2 has been repaired but fortunately I will be able to get rid of (not a moment too soon) and return to windows!
Thanks for the review! As an owner of XPS devices (7590, 9500, 9530), the only real flaw with them is their price tag. For what one gets, one can do better. I'm moving to Lenovo now. The Legion Slim 7i provides pretty much the best of both worlds for me (performance and build quality) at a far more reasonable price.
This one looks worse though. The XPS 15 laptops of the past had better performance, a full-sized SD card slot, and RAM slots. This one removes all of that for "form over function". And I don't personally like how the new ones look.
I agree, the lack of full sized SD card is insane as this is made for creatives! and I am not a fan of the touch buttons. The Ram cannot be helped as intel decided to incorporate the ram on die for these new core ultra CPUs but in my yes there was no need other than to copy apple silicon
@MashITTech "The RAM cannot be helped..." No, it's because companies got greedy and decided to screw consumers over by soldering it on so they'd have to upgrade at the time of purchase. There are Meteor Lake laptops with slotted RAM.
I thought this was the x16 r2 review at first and was very excited. Hard for me to personally get excited for this Dell XPS. Hopefully we’ll see some of the new 2024 Alienware’s sooner than later!
@@MashITTech ah geez. That sucks! I had pretty good luck with my x16 delivery but that was the r1 last year. Sounds like the m16 r2 review will be on the table first which I’m also looking forward to. Although for me personally I don’t find the new look of the m16 r2 appealing at all as I am a huge fan of the classic Alienware laptop design even if that means a significantly larger laptop. Additionally I read the fan noise with this machine is much worse than the r1. I guess you’ll find out soon enough!
@@MashITTech Can't wait for the X16 R2 review, there is no information about this laptop online other than Dell's site. I was shocked to find out that their (supposed) flagship laptop uses low-powered Core Ultra processors and, in typical Dell fashion lately, the standard 300 nits IPS display. Not even 4K 120hz like the X17.
Dell never seem to send out review units so we all have to wait for retail units to arrive and they were really late selling them in the U.K.! I always order alienware as soon as they launch as very few reviewers bother covering them (guess they just cover the companies sending out review units)
I just ordered a 16-inch model. I chose the Ultra 9 and the 4070. Hopefully, it should give decent performance. Especially with Vapor cooling and 60 watt 4070. Love the design, keyboard, and display. Also, ordered 32 gigs of ram. Should get better battery due to 99 watt battery.
I am working on the xps16 right now! Hoping to have the review out mid next week. I only got the 4060 as I ran out of money (bought 6 laptops this month, my back is not healthy 😂)
@@MashITTechI hear you about costs, but for 200 dollars you get much more with the 16. You get a 30% larger battery, 50 watt 4050,Wi fi 7, 10 watt speaker, 4k OLED and the ability to get Ultra 9 and 4070 with Vapor chamber cooling. Look forward to your review. The biggest miss was lack of full SD card but the rest works for me. Don't want a loud heavy and hot gaming laptop and G 16 while nice can't get with 4080 right now and don't want a hot running and loud computer also doesn't have haptic TouchPad, has a wobbling screen. Only 4080 has Vapor chamber cooling.
Yeah, I also wanted the get the g16 4080 in but the costs are insane in the U.K. I won’t touch the 4060 or 4070 g16 as it has a small annoying third fan instead of the vapour chamber. I was really surprised they didn’t put a vapour chamber on the xps 14 though as that could have really done with it. I was so disappointed the 4050 was capped at 30w 😢
Hi, it looks amazing this oled screen, but what about burn-in? Does these oled screen have burn-in issues in a couple of years or it will last many years?
2024 blade 14 is exactly the same as 2023 due to AMD just renaming the CPU. And I way prefer my 2023 blade 14 due to the power and the USBA and HDMI ports which I use a lot. But bear in mind I am a gamer at heart. For purely professional work the XPS might be a better choice

Hey Mashit excellent review of this cool laptop that OLED display is just wow I’m also in the market for a laptop this year and I was wondering which you would recommend out of these options the Lenovo Legion 9i, The MSI GT77 and the Razer Blade 18 2024 model let me know I love your detailed laptop reviews and don’t stop doing them anytime soon! ❤
thanks mate. And I would wait for the new Blade 18 to release before I can fully answer. The 18" 4k display is supposed to be special so could make it the winner! OG and I have another 4 laptops stacked up here for review so no stopping for sure 🤣
I planned to buy this in July, but lately I have learned about the explosion of Copilot+ PCs. Seems like Intel and Microsoft made a fool of us by encouraging us to buy Al PC with Meteor Lake, and then there came info that Meteor Lake's NPU chip will be much too slow to run the new real AI features! Now I'm not sure if it's still worthy to buy XPS 9440 now - after all this buzz about Copilot+ PCs, it seems better to wair for 'XPS 9450' with Lunar Lake :(
Good review and you avoided me from buying it as Dell really did compromise/kill off the XPS. It went in the wrong direction of the previous gen and continued that way. The battery life is quite awful and I wasn’t expecting that given other laptops in that class are significantly longer.
@@MashITTech indeed, 6h for video playback alone at 50% brightness is shocking. This should give aprox 4h max of Office Multitasking work. As for the charger, in the video you mention 100W AC adapter, whereas in Dell's website it mentions 60W AC adapter (just like the XPS 13 line). Can you please confirm it's a 100W AC?
I just realized that on Dell's website, just by changing XPS 14 specs from Arc to RTX 4050, it changes the AC Adapter from 60W to 100W automatically :)
Hi, i am trying to decide between a dell latitude and lenovo leigon but given the sales xps seems interesting too. It needs to handle adobe illustrator but not sure which to go for.
@@MashITTechThank you for getting back to me. The Dell latitude 3540 bx and 5540 btx are what dell recommended to me when i mentioned that it needs to be for business use but still fairly quick. My concern is that the build quality isnt as great and perhaps with the 13th gen i5 but tbh they are fast subject to how its configured (throttling can be issue in adobe) in most laptops
Great video!!! I actually just received the 14 inch version of this model today! I read somewhere that the LED Function row would deactivate after 5 mins of inactivity (Someone else's video states 10 mins), but it still never turns off! Is there a setting that you have to set for it to do this? Thanks to anyone that can help me.
If you change the keyboard backlighting behaviour in bios it also changes the oled touch keys. I actually changed mine to never go off as I wanted them always on 👍
@@MashITTech I may be speaking for most of us here that may not have the bravery to ask, but how do you get to the Bios to change that? I'm not a tech guy. But that light is annoying me. Someone's video said it would turn off after 5 mins of inactivity. So I thought I wouldn't even have to even mess with it. 🤷♀
@mashittech Does this new 14,5 120hz Oled panel have the same Screen Door Effect as the the new Dell XPS 16? Or is it even less visible than on that one? Thanks!
I haven't noticed it at all on the XPS14. Just out for lunch but will scrutinise it later but I Am sure I would have seen it as I am really picky with screens. Havant had any hands on time yet with the 16 as I didn't want to use it until the 14 was complete but will check that one too later
@@MashITTech On the 16" it is very very minimal and not bothersome as from the other LG oled touch screens who have this, where I find it personal that it is not okay to sell such a screen...
It feels like step back for Dell. No F keys, no SD card reader, performance worse then previous model, 6h on battery and keys look actually worse then XPS 15. No way I am buying that.
Indeed, XPS 13 9340 and XPS 16 9640 come with Wifi 7 (Killer Wi-Fi 7 1750 (BE200)), while XPS 14 9440 comes with wifi 6E (KillerWi-Fi 6E 1675 (AX211)). I didn't understand why though.
Well one notable thing is that it has the slowest RTX 40 series GPU on the market, that being a 30W RTX 4050. The exact same speed and VRAM as the 9 year old GTX 980 Ti in games, just at 8.4x less the power consumption. It's also the same speed and VRAM as an RTX 3050 6GB, which Nvidia still sells new, yet also at 2.4x less power consumption. For $1900 (Base specs besides the 4050) that isn't really a good value, when an RTX 3050 6GB costs $180 new, and the 980 Ti costs $80 on the used market. Honestly, I'd skip the 4050 on this thing and I'd rather spend the $400 upgrade cost on a $100 eGPU enclosure and $300 RTX 3070 Ti or RX 6800 Non XT.
haha Dell took ages to ship it! they are especially slow in the uk. I am thinking of doing a MacBook vs XPS video next week once I have reviewed the XPS16
thermals are good and no throttling but I feel they could have given the 4050 more wattage

Give me a Thinkpad t14 or t14s maxed with 32gb of ram any day of the week. Beautiful laptop indeed but too expensive for what it is. At that price is really hard not to recommend a macbook pro.
"The RAM is soldered with all Core Ultra CPUs"...uhm, no? Not sure where you got that from, but this isn't the case. You can definitely blame Dell for the soldered RAM.
I had hoped these new core ultra would give us all day battery but intel let us down again! If you don't like macOS then hold fire a bit as some of the new windows arm PCs could give apple silicon a run for its money
I own this laptop and really like the keyboard. Performance is also very descent as I use it professionally as a .Net developer. Did not yet try Lightroom and photoshop on it. For this I use my AMD Ryzen 9 5900x rig.
XPS has its flaws but its chassis quality and overall quality is definitely not average. Cheapening out using plastic materials or a standard mechanical trackpad would be average.
@@josephle2381 Interested parties should check out the Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 or Z16. They have the best chassis quality on the market and solve the Intel problem. Yes, I know bold claim about the quality. However, I believe it meets or exceeds the top on the market. I understand the manufacturing quality of the XPS is high, but the quality control and user experience is low.

The battery life is quite awful and I wasn’t expecting that given other laptops in that class are significantly longer.
yes the battery shocked me and I ran it multiple times as I couldn't believe it!
It needs to handle adobe illustrator but not sure which to go for.
give me the models you are looking at and I should be able to help :)
@@MashITTechThank you for getting back to me. The Dell latitude 3540 bx and 5540 btx are what dell recommended to me when i mentioned that it needs to be for business use but still fairly quick. My concern is that the build quality isnt as great and perhaps with the 13th gen i5 but tbh they are fast subject to how its configured (throttling can be issue in adobe) in most laptops
the lack of port is a massive deal breaker
The biggest drawback is that it only has up to a 4050 and costs 4070 prices.
yup, I am sure we will see a decent dell sale on it soon but at the moment it is well over priced
Amazing laptop, but damn that price is insane.
Hi, I have read a review saying the xps14 speaker is not impressive. How is it compare with the rog zephyrus g14 2024 or MacBook pro?
I have a MacBook Pro 14 I can compare it against but sadly I don't own a g14. I will try and compare with a MacBook Pro in an upcoming video
@@MashITTech thank you!
@mashittech Do you know how the speakers compare to the macbook pro 14's ? Thanks! A lot of windows laptops are missing base..
leave it with me, I am going to do a comparison video soon
@@MashITTech Thanks!!!
@@MashITTech On the 16" it is very very minimal and not bothersome as from the other LG oled touch screens who have this, where I find it personal that it is not okay to sell such a screen...
thanks for the heads up. I am going to scrutinise the 16 later!
It feels like step back for Dell. No F keys, no SD card reader, performance worse then previous model, 6h on battery and keys look actually worse then XPS 15.
No way I am buying that.
Yes, they have made some strange choices! I really hope the XPS 16 performs better but its still stuck with the OLED F keys and micro SD card slot :(
Isn't this laptop wifi 6E whereas the bigger one is wifi 7? That's on Dell's website but could be wrong as quite strange that Dell would do this.
Sadly that’s true! Definitely 6e in the 14, no idea why they are not both 7
Indeed, XPS 13 9340 and XPS 16 9640 come with Wifi 7 (Killer Wi-Fi 7 1750 (BE200)), while XPS 14 9440 comes with wifi 6E (KillerWi-Fi 6E 1675 (AX211)). I didn't understand why though.
Sleek looking laptop. Best part of this is that maybe we get OLED screens on Alienware soon!!
god if only! I have no idea why they are still supplying 300nit screens on the Alienware when all their competitors offer better screens
@@MashITTech They are either working on 16:10 OLED displays (maybe 4K 240hz too?) or they are just cutting costs.
How is the OLED display when viewing mainly text?
really good! text looks sharp and crisp. nothing like the abomination of text on my OLED AW3423DW 34" ultrawide
Waiting for dell xps 14 with Snapdragon X Elite....
Is that happening? I know the galaxy boom is getting it
Great video
Thank you
Was waiting so long for a (non sponsored) review of this that I just bought a MacBook lol.
haha Dell took ages to ship it! they are especially slow in the uk. I am thinking of doing a MacBook vs XPS video next week once I have reviewed the XPS16
The MacBook should win easily. That battery life is insane. And performance is the same even on battery. insane. Just that MacOs is crap
How's the thermal on this?
thermals are good and no throttling but I feel they could have given the 4050 more wattage
Give me a Thinkpad t14 or t14s maxed with 32gb of ram any day of the week. Beautiful laptop indeed but too expensive for what it is. At that price is really hard not to recommend a macbook pro.
totally agree with you and I am contemplating comparing with my MacBook Pro 14. And I would also prefer my Ryzen T14s too, I love that laptop
@@MashITTech thinkpad fan alert haha!! Me as well really super exciting for the new fully upgradeable T14 gen 5 this year.
yeah finally, I just wish they had the 2 battery option they used to have :)
M3 Air 13" is better than XPS 14?
Gorgeous machine ❤❤❤❤
"The RAM is soldered with all Core Ultra CPUs"...uhm, no? Not sure where you got that from, but this isn't the case. You can definitely blame Dell for the soldered RAM.
Yes you are right, I realised after I made the video. I thought it was intels requirement
It doesn't matter how good the screen is on the XPS on the MacBook Pro. You can get the vivid application and the nits are 1000 both 14 and 16 inch.
refresh for the worst. don't fix something ain't broke.
I'm just looking all day battery. M3 soon I fear. Hate Mac os 😢
I had hoped these new core ultra would give us all day battery but intel let us down again! If you don't like macOS then hold fire a bit as some of the new windows arm PCs could give apple silicon a run for its money
1:23 : Maybe you mean "Ghz" 😅
doh 🤣
Finally!
that keyboard looks awful
where is the black version? no user upgradable components? no thanks.
Great video but throughly disappointed with Dell’s decisions for the design and hardware for this computer
Thank you and yes, it was a struggle to me, I love the look and feel of the machine but there were certainly a few things niggling away at me
Asus ROG zephyrus g14 offers unmatched performance at a lower cost, plus its waay sexy 😍
true, it sure does. They are just stupidly priced in the UK sadly so I havent reviewed any
£2400. No thanks
Terrible performance
Avoid at all costs
I'll be getting the new Asus G14 over this.
Yes I t think I would too
I am not convinced with this keyboard...
I own this laptop and really like the keyboard. Performance is also very descent as I use it professionally as a .Net developer. Did not yet try Lightroom and photoshop on it. For this I use my AMD Ryzen 9 5900x rig.
i just think it's way overpriced. The Asus Zenbook Pro has an OLED panel with 32GB RAM and a 4070 GPU for $2000.
wow that is a good price. Sadly Asus is really expensive in the UK for some reason. I wanted to get the G16 but its an insane price over here :(
Dell, No HDMI port on 14 inch laptop? Just skip it.
Xps, latitude, inspiron, Precision... same old design... 👎
Sorry Dave, not for me...😉
haha no, I must admit as much as I like the look of it, its not for me either. I wouldn't swap my blade 14 for an XPS despite that amazing screen
@@MashITTech It's a shame because it seems well made... 🤷
Stopped watching at £2300 with a 4050.
Haha don’t blame you!
Looks to be a very average quality laptop. Typical Intel...fans blaring and hot. The screen can't save the awkward function row and lack of ports.
not going to argue with that! I was really hoping these core ultra CPUs would be able to stand up against apple silicon for heat and battery
Did dell just copy apple???
dell often copy apple but in a half hearted way 🤣
No buy, for entry price of 14 dell xps id get a macbook m3 15 inch, 16gb ram/512 ssd forthe exact same price. 😉
Dell just murdered their own XPS line lol. What a bad, compromised design.
Dell do make some odd choices! As I have said in Previous Dell review videos it feels like the person designing them never actually uses them for work
I bet your mother's ashamed of your existence.
The Dell precision 9450 is what the XPS line should have been. Dell really drop the ball with new XPS line.
