So in the Targon one: The Vaulted Road, the two women (the one dressed in gold with the shield, and the one with the moon on her forehead) are Leona and Diana. Leona, the gold one with the shield, is the aspect of the sun. Diana, the one with the moon on her forehead, is the aspect of the moon.
Their story is a tragedy, lovers to enemies. They were together but were separated when Diana chose to follow the path of the moon and forsake her Solari heritage in favour of the Lunari (Solari worship the sun, Lunari the moon, Solari view Lunari as heretics).
There are other dynamics as well and this is a gross oversimplification, but I recommend you read their stories on Universe, especially the new one which highlights their youth and coming together.

As for playing the game and people claiming it's toxic, here's my analogy:
It's like a 5v5 pickup game of basketball with all strangers.
I'd say the majority of them stay quiet and enjoy the game, maybe with some minor banter.
About 25-35% or so are elitist/alpha mentality I.e. bashing, bullying, trash-talk, disrespectful type of talk etc...
Both of those groups have a fairly high competitive nature (I personally kinda fit into both)
Then there's the rest: which are people burning time with friends, to stay occupied, or to completely troll.

Runeterra is the name of this world (literally, Magic Earth)
Thresh is just about the most evil character in the game. He was a member of a magical order on the Blessed Isles but he was also a sadistic psychopath who betrayed the Blessed Isles to an invading king and led him to a sacred well so the king could resurrect his wife. This unleashed a black mist that killed everyone and trapped them as ghosts which allowed Thresh to indulge his cruelty by trapping souls in his lantern and torturing them for eternity.

    • @pudding2077
      @pudding2077 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Another important thing about Thresh is that when the Ruination (the black mist spreading) happened everyone there was reduced to their most negative attributes. Hecarim, the king's general, was overcome by his brutality. Kalista became obsessed with revenge and became the spirit of vengeance.
But Thresh...Thresh stayed exactly the same. A spiteful, cruel, petty, envious bully. Except now he had the power to make all of his twisted fantasies a reality.

    Hey Hannah,
As a gamer, I'm glad that Arcane opened an entire universe of stories, and characters, whose history and lore would otherwise take hours of one on one discussion, in order for a layperson to fully understand the main story.
I'm also intrigued by your interest/use of Celtic mythology in your novels. May I ask, where did you pick interest in that particular culture? According to your Bio you've spent some time in Germany, which is more prone to late-Roman and mid-Germanic cultures.

Kind of a natural evolution. I wrote Blood, Kin, and Curse, though it wasn't called that, a long time ago. I realized it wasn't the right first book, but I knew I wanted to grow the world I had created. I looked in that book for a character I liked.
At the time there was a character who was half demon, half witch and was Irish. I gave him some more thought. Decided to make him a Celtic Demi-god and write a story about him. Thus Magic Required was born!

Oh man, "are people mean in League of Legends"... Let me tell you a brief story about my girlfriend. She gave it a try once with a mutual friend at a convention. The way LoL works, you level up your character during gameplay (gain access to new powers, buy items like special shoes to make you run faster). You can gain levels by killing opposing players. In other words, if you're playing badly, and the enemy team is killing you often, then that is actively making them level up faster and making it even harder for your team than if you weren't playing. Back to my girlfriend: She was in exactly that situation, playing so badly that her team was better off without her. Our mutual friend - who can be a bit competitive - wanted to win, and asked her to leave the game so that their team could stop losing. Shortly after she stopped playing, their team turned things around and won. She was literally more useful doing nothing than playing the game. Of course, this left her dejected and turned her off that game. The game design is definitely not conducive to new players having a good time, and in general it's a bad idea to jump into an online game alone and expect a good time. With the right friends, being terrible itself can be part of the fun. Clearly, that one mutual friend I mentioned wasn't that type.
Edit: To many people, this won't seem particularly mean. It's definitely not as bad as some of the things people say and do with the anonymity of the internet. However, this was one of our _friends_ , and someone who is genuinely a very helpful kind person in daily life. When my girlfriend and I moved in together, he made himself available with less than a week's notice to help us move. However, once the game started, that competitive side came out, and he cared more about winning than about making sure that his friend, my girlfriend, was also enjoying herself.

The two women that lead the opposite tribes that you see in “The Vaulted Path” are both beings known as “Aspects” that are pretty much Demi-Gods in Runeterra.
The one in the Golden armor is Leona, the Aspect of the Sun and leader of the Solari Clan. The one with the silver hair is Diana, the Aspect of the Moon and the leader of the Lunari clan.
Before they were aspects they were actually in love, which is why they look at each other for so long after witnessing a member of each of their clans also fall in love and ascend to the stars.

Honestly the hate people give the community is mostly a meme at this point. League is an extremely fun game and no more or less toxic than any other multiplayer game. It's just so massive that it's impossible for Riot to punish all the griefers and foul mouthed jerks. People can often take the game too seriously and trash talk their teammates for making mistakes or having a different strategy. I've been playing for 8+ years and I love the community, but I also play with chat off. I would recommend Teamfight Tactics more since it's easier to get into and uses the same characters plus Silco. Both are accessed through the same client. I also love your reactions and have adopted "bad boyfriend" for my vocabulary. There is so much lore out there, I think you would really get a kick out of reading champion descriptions, but some may have spoilers for future Arcane since the show is basically a prequel to the game.

  • @nekrataali

Me: "My carry is fucking useless."
Also me: "OH SHIT OH FUCK ROCK! ROCK NOOO! SAVE ROCK!"
Yes, people are really mean in League hahaa. Since it's a 5v5 team game, you have to rely heavily on your teammates because it's pretty much impossible to win without help. The Yordle video has some jokes about this, namely the line Tristana tells to Lulu "A carry is nothing without her support!" and "Rock! No!"
Teams generally have positions players like to specialize in, similar to how you'd have forwards or goalies in soccer. In League, two of those positions are ADC (attack damage carry) and Support. An ADC is a champion that deals most of their damage from just clicking on enemies. They have abilities like everyone else does, but these are often for utility (Tristana has an ability that lets her jump by shooting her cannon at the ground, for example). The term "carry" is a leftover from one of the first MOBA games, Defense of the Ancients. Basically, the team "carries" one player by protecting them in the early game and helping them get resources. Then in the late game, this dynamic is reversed so that one player can basically take on the entire opposing team mostly on their own. In League, ADCs still have this mechanic mostly intact. They spend the first 20 minutes or so of the game trying not to die and making gold, then once they've gotten stronger, they help the team hunt down and kill the other players.
A support (Lulu in the video), as you can now probably imagine, is exactly what it sounds like. They're there to heal/shield teammates, stun enemies, and most importantly protect the team's carry. Generally, the support and ADC partner up and guard the bottom portion of the map. As a support, you're often overlooked because teams want to play offense and leave you behind as goalie. But then this leads to your ADC doing dumb shit, so 99% of the game is you trying to save them from doing more dumb shit. The Yordle video is exactly how it goes down for a lot of supports. Teams want you to guard the useless ADC who may as well be a rock, they get themselves in a bind, then it's up to you to save the day.
Tl;dr-- playing support is like that scene from The Departed. "Oim tha gey who doze his fuckan' jab. You must be tha auther gey."

Like someone else explained, the two girls who look at each other at the end of the Targon cinematic used to be lovers who are now enemies for being on opposing factions/religions. The little "romeo and juliet" romance of the solari guy and lunari girl is really just a huge parallel to the two's relationship. The tale shows the solari x lunari couple ascending and finding a happy ending together... And then they see each other, and after having just witnessed two people in their same situation find a way to be together, drops their weapons :)

League of Legends is alot better with friends. Its a pretty complex game with a large learning curve and is naturally competitive. this leads to a lot people getting really angry for even the smallest mistakes and naturally being pretty mean. I was pretty bad when I played this game in high school (2010) Now I dont really get angry anymore lol. if you have the patience and are willing to learn though it can be super rewarding. Its alot of fun to watch though! The pro players are super amazing! Though it can be a bit confusing at first.

So, these are cinematics for Legends of Runeterra, a card game spin-off of League, by nature it is much more light-hearted than LoL. Also Arcane is largely non-canon from main League lore, so some characters and event are different here and there. Even though it's not present in the game at all, League has a lot of amazing lore, most told via short stories in the "Universe" tab of their website. I'd absolutely recommend reading up if you're interested. Really liking your videos too btw, awesome vibe!

Fun Fact, both Leona and Diana (Moon Warrior and Sun Warrior in the Targon Trailer) and Graves and Twisted Fate (Cowboy and Card Guy) were originally thought as gay couples.
Leona and Diana as a tragic lover kind of deal of Leona being part of the oppressive militant Solari Faith and her childhood friend and lover Diana becoming the leader of the Lunari, an "heretic" movement that preaches how Sun and Moon are equal against the Solari dogma of the ever lasting sun.
TF and Graves on the other hand are a buddy cop duo of on again off again husbands that have wacky adventures together and some times double cross one another.
(Unfortunately, both couple had been left to subtext until VERY recently, with Diana and Leona finally being confirmed to have been lovers. TF and Graves are still left undisclosed, at least until Graves gets a card in Legends of Runeterra the card game that is, which believe it or not is actually a great place if you want a character to be revealed LGBT given how many new and old characters were revealed to be LGBT there ranging to big name characters like Nami (Bisexual), Miss Fortune (Good question, she sure likes to flirt with every woman she finds tho ranging from Quinn to members of her crew to even Vi (Who will keep reminding her she has a girlfriend already) or Irelia (Lesbian) to more obscure ones such as Veigar's Yordle Dressmaker being Trans).

Like any world different characters have different stories so while arcane is more serious and deals with tragedy not all of the other characters story arcs are the same way. One of my favorite lines like that one is from Highlander. To give a little background, Duncan is about 400 years old and is in a fight with an 700 year old Irish woman who he used to know. He disarms her but can't finish her because he's mostly a good decent guy. While she's on the beach, smiling at her ruse and looking for her sword. Methos, who is arguably 4000 years and a literal Horseman of the Apocalypse, comes up with his sword and says, "I'm sorry, I was born long before the Age of Chivalry" and beheads her.

It's certainly odd way of story telling but it really is becoming seen as better, that is to explore lore from the eyes of characters living it. You don't need an outcast character who has everything explained to them so that we, the viewer/reader can follow along. You don't need an explanation of how magic always work, or who has high bounties on Yordles.
Think of each short clip like campfire stories, those are ones people keep telling. I read Pride & Prejudice but I couldn't tell a memorable story from it. The world of Runeterra isn't a novel, it is a world of several dozens of characters who just simply live in a world, often with various adventures.

Ooh, you know what would be a really interesting game for a non-gamer (but also an actual author) to play? A text-based adventure game. Quite a few can freely be played in-browser. You just have to type in short phrases to describe what action you want your character to take, and the game will describe what happens as a result (or often will give you a witty response why you can't do that thing).
Edit: I just mean that given HannaH's love of stories, I hope the game that does get played is light on dexterous real-time gameplay. Throwing a newcomer into gaming's deep end is bound to be a bad time. I'd also enjoy a digitized version of a tabletop game (depending on the game). I mean, hey... chess is as much a video game as any other if you play it on a computer. Also, in case anyone is looking for a fun wacky game to share with non-gamer friends (especially if they have a crude sense of humor), Monster Prom is a great start. A playthrough takes 40 minutes to an hour, longer depending how many jokes you and your friends crack alongside the plot.

    1. They do enhance the games. All of them, not just league of legends. "Legends of runeterra" is the game that is the most adjacent to the lore.
    2. If you have 4 friends to play with, league of legends is some of the most fun you can have with a computer- no joke. It's one of the most popular games in the world for a reason, with tens of millions filling stadiums for the annual championship finals.
    3. HOWEVER if you play it by yourself, you will encounter the worst of humanity- this is NOT an exaggeration- the warnings are correct. You can squeak by if you have one friend to guide and protect you (so called "bottom lane couples"...if your "partner" is good at the game it can be a lot of fun) but do NOT play alone unless you have steeled yourself and are ready to be told things about yourself that will cut....deep...deeper than you ever imagined.

In my opinion it's the best game on the planet that can't have the most toxic gaming community but this is mainly when it comes to playing ranked play. As a result I don't play ranked because that's where the majority of toxic players are. Online competitive games are role based and there is no teamwork.
Example in football you have goalkeeper, strikers, wingman, midfielders, defenders
League of legends/ overwatch/ valorant or anything similar : Tank, fighter, assassins', marksmen, healer/sheilder.
So the reason why Online competitive games are toxic is because of complacency. In football everyone on the field ready to win and give it their all whereas in league of legends in most cases 3 of your teammates are either don't care or are drunk. To make maters worse these 3-4 players choose to play RANKED out of the given game modes ," normal, all mid , event mode and RANK'.
The ranked game mode has a progression system from Iron to silver, gold, platnium, masters, challenger and maybe to Esports. so 1-2 good players get mad when 3-4 are bad at the game and have bad attitudes. They're not here to win but to play with a casual mindset in a competitive game mode. They could've simply picked the NORMAL game modes designed for casuals but instead they'd pick competitive which drives the 2 good players mad because now they have to do everything and its not easy. Carrying the weight of the team playing 1v 9 whilst saying bad comments to bad teammates.
Now here comes the juicy part and the difference between sports and Esports. In sports or in any group setting. The best player taking on the captain position yells at his teammates to," get their shit together and stop passing the ball to the enemy team'. However in Esports games RANKED MODE like league of legends when the best player with leadership skills does the same thing. The response you'd get is, " %$#@ you suck etc ". because these bad players are very very insecure and might even play the game on purpose to make good players lose or be unable to control their emotions and burst out which is what they wanted. Toxic people.
So then what does a good league of legends player have to do to succeed? He has to play the 1v9 , mute everyone( a feature that basically prevents you from talking to your teammates or them back at you). If you do this. You have to know everything about the game and do everything. it is challenging and have to carry your teammates. It is not a team game. Your teammates are a liability and may choose to become an asset. So in order to increase your income you have to work really hard carrying the weight of 4 bad players on your team. So its not a team game. Its a single player competitive game. Having another good teammate is rare and lucky.
League of legends is only a team sport at the Media level with regional teams world championship etc but it is not in everyday gaming. its the opposite.
I'm using league of legends as an example this applies for most online competitive games with a ranking system , and I haven't even talked about account boosting which messes up everything. in short as you climb the ranks logically you'd think you'd meet better players. Unfortunately account boosting means that a bad player pays someone to boost his account from bronze 1 to platinum 1(shortcut). So now you have the same similar experience playing in bronze 4 in now platinum.
League of legends is designed like chess and the experience should be like playing chess but its the opposite and very emotional. Good players need to have very thick skin and strong mental fortitude.
Which is why it is a necessity to only play the game when you have high levels of energy and in a hyper focused mental state. You cant be lazy or sloppy. You must be like an artist that's in the zone super focused and wont be sad or emotional even if the painting turns out to be bad. he'd simply try again or paint again tomorrow until he gets it right. Making sure to only paint when he is in peak energy levels. Ready to crush it. Like lifting the heaviest weight doing the most push ups . You get what i mean @@
Games designed for strong minded people. Leaning more towards thinking than feelings. For people who like to be competitive, like to fight, think, plan, come up with creative strategies etc.
