When these first came out, I didn't care that much for the design probably because there were so many other good looking cars to look at. But over time this car has grown on me.
I really need a Torino, damnit. Can we all agree that 1970 was the best year for muscle cars? Chevelle, GTO, Buick GS, Boss Mustangs, 'Cudas, Challengers...
I'm a Mopar guy but I agree. The 70 Mercury Cyclone, the 66-67 Fairlane/Comet, and 68-69 Torino/Cyclone Fastbacks were all great looking cars too. Ford had some really nice looking cars in those days
My friend Charlie Reynolds had one in HS when we both went to HIGH POINT HS IN SUSSEX COUNTY NJ! I loved that car ! I was driving a 61 Ford starliner with a built 390 ,3x2,4sp!ahhhh the good ol days! Charlie if you're see this , or if anyone from Sussex county NJ, holla!!! ✌️🍄🍺😏
I went to college in Maine and a classmate from Albany NY had a 70 Torino 429 SCJ, 4 spd, beautiful yellow and black. His father owned a dealership so John came back each semester with something new, but this was the best yet. I f I remember right this car had an optional 4:30 diff. Well, John let me drive it out on the highway. We're cruising along at 70 and he tells me to nail it. Like an idiot, I downshifted into 3rd and lit up the tires bigtime at 70 mph! I never even saw the tach but from the sound of the engine it had to be close to redline. He used to blow off 383 Cudas, 440 Magnum Chargers and most other stuff that tried to mess with him. Fantastic looking and running car. The 4:30 gears did the trick in short runs. That car had to be putting out more than the already stout 375 hp it was factory rated at which was typical of the time to understate horsepower.
I had two Torino 70 Cobra's, 429 4 speeds with drag pack, comp suspention and rear louvers. Still have one that draws lots of attention and a hoot to drive. Prior to these had 69 , 428 Torino cobra until one of tha 70 429 showed it's tail lights. Jerry with a smile.
Back in 70 a friend of mine ordered this same car but with a 4-speed and 4:30 gears. As soon as he received the car after waiting 6 weeks he was out street racing it. A neighbor had a 65 GTO with a 389 tri-power 4-speed and 4:10 gears along with Indy mags and a big cam of some kind. They ran the cars and the GTO won by four cars. Next he ran a 69 Hemi Charger auto and 3:91 gears and lost bad. I don't remember him ever winning and race although he could have after I was drafted in Oct.
This car and the Chevy SS with the 454 are my favorite cars from this year. I was 14 in 1970 and remember seeing these muscle cars on the street every day. Unfortunately the gas embargo of 1974 put an end to the muscle car era.
hypocycloidiaspora I like '68 Torino. Red fastback with 428 SCJ & 4 spd. All stemming from me buying a yellow '68 notchback 351 W/ FMX for $250. to use as a work car. OMG! The mpg out of that 2v 351W was fantastic! almost always over 20 and mostly freeway would net 23.5+ with ease. Pretty easy car to like.
hypocycloidiaspora 1966 7 Litre is my choice along with '62 406 4spd. Galaxie and square birds and continuing with Thunderbird through most of the 1960's. '66-7 Fairlane. '64 Falcon Sprint and all the fastback Mustang's till the smog era started.
This friend’s Green 1970 Torino Cobra Jet had the 429 SCJ engine with Shaker Hood. Wide ratio 4-speed transmission (4 in the floor) Black vinyl bench seat without an air conditioner. Magnum 500 rims with 15” F-60 tires. This 1970 Torino 429 Cobra Jet would spin in all four gears through the ¼ mile.
Boy I sure love cars that you could get unusual options on. Not just weird color combinations but a bench seat and automatic on the column. Now a days I don't think you can do anything like that. And of course the best ever was the '69 ZL1 Corvette.
the 429 and the 351 cleveland just came about too late in the era .. imagine the dominance ford would have had if these engines came out ten years earlier ...
I had a 1970 Torino SCJ back in 1975, I bought it from a neighbor who was the original owner, he ordered it when he was coming back from Vietnam, Ford had an incentive program for soldiers returning from Vietnam. It was yellow, black interior, high back buckets, 4 speed, drag pack, rear louvers. I used to laugh when they said that car had 375 HP, that car was a rocket, tremendous power off the line, great car, wish I still had it. Recently test drove a 1970 429 CJ that was advertised locally, what a joke compared to the car I had, no power.
Jeffery Miller, you are right. That motor needed the solid cam and Holley so it could rev and use those giant ports! I had one in a Jet Boat with a 600 lift solid cam tunnel ram two 660 Holley's. It just killed those alum head Chevy's on the water!
@@hubriswonkoh man I wish I had more work done to it but so far it’s been stripped completely the entire frame has been sandblasted and repaired just filled up any small gaps or holes it had from rust After that we started working on the interior we replaced the carpet seats and got some nice rims for it too Just looking for a new dashboard And we haven’t touched the exterior much since I can’t decide on what color or style to go for I also need to have the engine rebuilt but it’s coming along I still go to school full time so it might take a while for me to get more work on it done since I don’t have too much money to spend

I remember going into a Ford dealer with a relative to look at one like this, there was a Grabber Green 70 Mustang fastback with white inside and a 4 speed which I looked at but my relative checked out the cost for the Torino 500 GT in Bright Yellow with black hood and rear decals plus the side decal and rear window louvers and a 4 speed. If there were buyers that focused on taking these monsters on a local track to have fun, they wouldn't have been skewered by the insurance companies or ended up as rare today for the survivors that cheated the crusher as scrap.
The 429 Super Cobra Jet V8 engine is so overlooked but it was one of the most powerful engines ever put in a muscle car. Right up there with the Street Hemi and Chevy 427 L72
Johnnyc drums Why? because the 428 CJ was a good street/strip performance engine. The 429 CJ was a different engine family and was to be Ford's answer in NASCAR. Designed for sustained mid to high RPM use the ports were way too big for street use. Poor low end throttle response and thus poor drivability did these cars in on the street and E.T.'s that a 428 could attain or surpass didn't really show the 429 to be a superior engine in any meaningful way.
this car had way more Horse Power than advertised , i drove up on one with a 69 Camaro ,and that damn Torino took off like a rocket ....that image is itched in my memory
My boss at work has a similar car but his does not have a shaker hood and it's yellow not red. Awesome looking in red with the black. Nothing like big block muscle ! Love this channel! Keep up the good videos!
my Brother owned one of these ....and I drove the SNOT out of it...his was Petty Blue with a 4-speed and Shaker hood scoop, etc....he bought it in 1975 for....get THIS - $500....yeppppppp.... 1971 5 years old I put my fist through a window. Damn near cut it completely off. My neighbor had a green one. And she was a nurse I remember racing to the hospital in Clinton New Jersey in the backseat with my arm over my head. Jamming gears. I reckon that car saved my life. If Gene Titus is still out there in Clifton New jersey.? Thanks
Wrong, the SCJ Torino engine had an 11:3.1 compression ratio, I know I still own probably the rarest Torino Cobra still alive, a first edition model and I researched all of these cars.
In my home town in the '80s, there was a guy with a triple-black 70 Torino GT convertible, it was evil, one guy had a red Mercury Comet GT, several 1st Gen Camaros were always driving around, a 'platinum-mist 70 GS455 Stage 1 driven by a _grandmother_ was often seen, there was a show-car '68 442 with crazy graphics the guy drove every nice sunday,, the guy down the street had a '71 Le Mans with a 350 4bbl, the guy up the street had an honest to God '69 Charger Daytona that was just sitting in his yard, another guy had a '70 Mach 1, another guy had a '69 Super Bee...go to the package store on a saturday and it was like a damned car show. Big car show in that same town since the '70s, and the day I entered my own muscle car in that show, and was _ordered by the attending police to do a burnout as I left_ was the day I knew things could be pretty good.
That is a really sweet car now I'm not going to lie I'm much more a General Motors fan than a Ford fan but I really like the old terrenos 67 to 1970 and although you can't really get a nice one on the cheap anymore I feel like they're still underappreciated I think their look is unique fair look with the right paint Etc is definitely angry looking and I like that and you're right the 429 scj is the baddest of the trinos I would love to have that car even though it would drive me nuts with an automatic on the column hahaha
At (1:55) you said the 429 SCJ had a 10'5:1 compression ratio, This is Not correct ! The 1970 429 SCJ is 11.3:1 ratio with a solid lifter and a Holley 4150-780 cfm this was fantastic engine, the 429 CJ is 11.3:1 ratio with a hydraulic lifter and a Rochester 760 cfm, the Thunderjet 429 is 10.5:1 ratio with a Ford 600 cfm. 1971 the SCJ and CJ stayed the same and the Thunderjet was dropped from the Torino and Cyclone. Also Ford like the other derated their engines greatly, the 429 SCJ was actually 430 hp not 370. And earlier 68/69' Torino, Cyclone, 68-70' Mustang and Cougars that had the 428 SCJ that was laughingly rated at 335 HP !!! It was more like 410-415 HP. : )
Wrong it is just as I wrote it right out of (Super 60s Fords-performance history books) or google 1970 Ford Torino engines. Read my post carefully again please.
+Prog X Those specs are 100% correct ! I Also own a 70' Torino GT w/ 429 CJ and I have that Ford book also, doesn't every Ford fan ? Thanks for the accurate post !!!!
Most beautiful year of Torino ever made.....wish they'd kept the 427 engines over the 429.....much better engine in terms of potential. The doggone shock towers jutted in on the 429/460 and the exhaust ports made basically a U-turn getting out of the head. I've built several 429/460's and that is a bone of contention with me. A fella needs to just chuck the cast iron heads and go with a good-flowing aftermarket head. Beautiful car....if you don't have room for it I will gladly open a space in my garage. Lookin' good, Kevin...are you cutting weight? I need to.......sigh.....
The potential of the 429-460 BBF,s is Way Greater than the FE Engines, Way Stronger Foundation, Can go Much Bigger, It was Cast to Replace the Aging FE design. And Yes, Aftermarket Cylinder Heads is a Definite for any 429-460 Build, if you wanna make some Good Power. And if you think Shock Towers in way of 429 Engines, ever change Spark Plugs on a 67 or 68 Mustang with the 390 or 428 ? Talk about Shock Towers in the way !
Aleksandar Lozanovski My '68 Torino GT was 351 Windsor/FMX automatic. I would bet C6 behind a 429. Not sure an FMX would be up to the task or rather torque of a big block.
Love it's this one beautifully Car FORD TORINO super COBRA 🐍 JET look good very nicely lovely Car perfect for just give to me My name Craig Lee penhall ohhhh yes
Fords FE engines ranged between 332 and 428 cid., while the 429 and 460 were 385 series engines. The Boss 429 also had the 385 block, designed for use with Fords hemispherical heads, with the canted/angled valves. Ford should have built it, I imagine the torque of a Boss 460 would have been around 600 lbft....
Nice car but wonder why anyone would have ordered a bench seat & automatic on the column? Interior looks like a taxi. If they wanted to save weight, get the same pkg in a Mustang.
beloog99 The Cobra was designed to be the Ford counterpart to the Road Runner which was like a taxi as well. These are the fastest taxis you'll ever drive.
Karl X Yeah, I remember the first batch of '68 Roadrunner's. Touted as a price leading muscle car. 383 4spd. vinyl bench seat. Rubber floor instead of carpet. Tilt out rear seat side Windows rather than roll down. Cheap, light and good looking and with a 383 Magnum as the base performance engine with an optional 440 and 426 Hemi it was all business, no frills.
I had grabber green 4spd drag pack and had thru 1976 driving one day in Tucson guy came over center line totalled the car insurance paid me and I tried to get car salvage yard claimed possession stripped the shaker and tachometer first sold schmucks
My friends brother had the same car without the big motor, I had a roadrunner and had a couple friends with GTOs, I thought the Torino was ugly compared to mopars and Pontiacs , I definitely appreciate it now.
That's twice in one year that Ford dropped the ball on these Torino's 1st to make a king cobra Torino that was too little too late to compete with the Superbird and Daytona 2nd to make a SCJ Torino that had no answer for the Chevelle 454 LS6 450 horse🤣💪
A cobra jet does not a Super Cobra Jet make.... I saw one when I was fifteen, my car was a 69 Impala ss427 I paid $500 for in 1973... The emblem was a cobra with 429 SCJ under the cobra!!!
Amazing how ford hung the exhaust tips like they were an afterthought. looks just wrong maybe should have looked how finished the Chrysler corp.cars were . one of the best ford bodies of the muscle car years...
IDK, a SCJ had either 3.91 over 4.30 gears so with torque multiplication of the convertor this would be a monster on slicks! So I vote Muscle Car indeed.
Really nice car.. The Brits from across the pond did a competition between the Dukes of Hazzard's Dodge Charger, aka the General Lee, versus the Starsky and Hutch's Ford Gran Torino...... It was pretty interesting... Check it out.. Type in------> Fifth Gear - Dukes of Hazzard v Starsky & Hutch Shoot-Out
+Dan Troy The test was cool, but the 1974 Torino wasn't that powerful. I have a 1970 Torino GT with the 351 Cleveland and it has more hp than the 429 in 1972 and the power ratings only got lower as the years went on. That was because starting in 1971 the government started cracking down on the automobile industry. They were forced to lower the hp dramatically and use emission controls, that even made them weaker. I would like to see the '69 Charger vs the '69 or this '70 Torino (either Cobra or GT)
When these first came out, I didn't care that much for the design probably because there were so many other good looking cars to look at. But over time this car has grown on me.

And earlier 68/69' Torino, Cyclone, 68-70' Mustang and Cougars that had the 428 SCJ that was laughingly rated at 335 HP !!! It was more like 410-415 HP. : )
a reg cobra jet had 10.5-1, supers had 11.3-1
Wrong it is just as I wrote it right out of (Super 60s Fords-performance history books) or google 1970 Ford Torino engines. Read my post carefully again please.
+Prog X Those specs are 100% correct ! I Also own a 70' Torino GT w/ 429 CJ and I have that Ford book also, doesn't every Ford fan ? Thanks for the accurate post !!!!
Ronnie Farnsworth the torino in this video is a SCJ, not a CJ
WPGinterceptor Well yes it is ! Who said different ?
This and the ‘69 mustang were among the best looking cars Ford ever made
💥Fordever and Ever!!💯😎
my favorite muscle car, 2nd would be shelby cobra
nicest car ever built
Nice car
Just wondering, being a column auto was the transmission a C6 or FMX ???
Aleksandar Lozanovski My '68 Torino GT was 351 Windsor/FMX automatic. I would bet C6 behind a 429. Not sure an FMX would be up to the task or rather torque of a big block.
I would say c6
Super thunder sting car!
Chevelle buyers got the cowl induction hood but they didn't get the shaker. Yeah the LS6 rules, but the shaker hood is a winner too.
Love it's this one beautifully Car FORD TORINO super COBRA 🐍 JET look good very nicely lovely Car perfect for just give to me My name Craig Lee penhall ohhhh yes
The Torino was to the mustang as chargers were to cudas & challenges
Fords FE engines ranged between 332 and 428 cid., while the 429 and 460 were 385 series engines. The Boss 429 also had the 385 block, designed for use with Fords hemispherical heads, with the canted/angled valves. Ford should have built it, I imagine the torque of a Boss 460 would have been around 600 lbft....
Fe starts with the 352.
Sir FarSide That's 385 series engine family.
Someone Whatever Was there not a 332 FE?
385 series
if it had hideaway headlights 4 speed manual transmission be perfect
I agree Scott. A C-6 with a bench seat is a crime in this car. :(
The 13 thumbs down (so far) must drive a Prius.
How did these stack up against the AMC Javelin?
Nice car but wonder why anyone would have ordered a bench seat & automatic on the column? Interior looks like a taxi. If they wanted to save weight, get the same pkg in a Mustang.
beloog99 The Cobra was designed to be the Ford counterpart to the Road Runner which was like a taxi as well. These are the fastest taxis you'll ever drive.
Karl X guess they were for folks who wanted max seating/min price: 6 instead of 4 in a pony car
With a bench seat and column shift, your girl can sit right next to you while you drive. A forgotten pleasure in an age of bucket seats in everything.
Ohhh man - Torino interiors were sooo mundane and cheesie. Kinda hard to believe such a great looking car had such b-interiors.
This car had such a sexy muscular body style what was Ford thinking to put a column shifter in it😢
It rocks
Is it worth to buy 70y old car and drive it regularly?
No, get a beater car for the winter.
Blyacticos this car is no where near 70, it's 48.
For rarity, wish for the Falcon version.. 😏
It makes me hunger for some jelly beans..
l love the look of this car but not the dash gauges
Always loved the Torino. I would have to change those hokey tail pipes. Factory correct of not.
I had grabber green 4spd drag pack and had thru 1976 driving one day in Tucson guy came over center line totalled the car insurance paid me and I tried to get car salvage yard claimed possession stripped the shaker and tachometer first sold schmucks
He probably knew you were a Communist, but he still shouldn't have totaled your car.
.....Dassa Reel Beauty......
Auto and bench seat in a SCJ Torino what was he or she thinking??
I'm not a ford man even I'll admit the Torino was far too overshadowed by the Charger and GM offerings
That looks like dad's old car, his didn't have hood pins to lock the hood down.
Amazing how ford hung the exhaust tips like they were an afterthought. looks just wrong maybe should have looked how finished the Chrysler corp.cars were . one of the best ford bodies of the muscle car years...
It was nothing to do with that it was all about getting your your closer
Another good car to drag race with the police.
CJ and SCJ were 11.3 to 1,
Nothing confusing about Ford big block engines to us fans! 🙄
Absolutely beautiful. However wtf would anyone in their proper mind want a auto on the column and bench seat. Yuk
Only someones Grandpa would by a muscle car with an automatic!
IDK, a SCJ had either 3.91 over 4.30 gears so with torque multiplication of the convertor this would be a monster on slicks! So I vote Muscle Car indeed.
I agree with Jack. 'Cept I know of a few grandpas that can row a mean 4 speed. Most kids of today have no clue how to powershift.
joe quillun Pretty hard to beat the repeatability of an automatic when bracket racing at the local strip.
BAD BOY
I have a model car of this.
Do all of these videos have that same guy dogging the car you're featuring?
13 people missed third gear and lost a drag race to an automatic
Lincoln clay had some taste
+J Layden 351 Cleveland, wicked! My cousin had a 71 Mercury Cyclone with a 351C that was super fast.
A 74? Wow...I guess it was a joke.
