Is Mirror's Edge Catalyst worth playing in 2023?

  • For the first review of 2023 I'm finally getting around to playing and reviewing Mirror's Edge Catalyst. Mirror's Edge Catalyst was released in 2016, and was met with mixed reviews, but I had a blast playing it. I enjoyed Catalyst's take on open world, for the most part, and think the combat system is a big step up from the first game. If you get the chance, I say playing Mirror's Edge Catalyst is absolutely worth it in 2023.

Absolutely agree on everything you said here. Can't believe how long it took me to play through these gems, bot ME and ME: Catalyst. I loved the first game and its artstyle, and gameplay, although it was frustrating at times, and the combat really felt forced. And even though this game has a different feel to it, I love it just as much. Like you said, the main thing that hurts the open world in this game is having the districts all separated with these massive gaps, and pretty much only having one way to go from one place to another. Really hurts the momentum and having to go through the same routes over and over again starts to get boring fast. Also I really like the futuristic aesthetic of the world in this game, but I wish they had kept it more grounded like in the first ME. All of the conceptual architecture, open buildings, it looks beautiful and its fun to run through, but doesn't really look like places where people work and live at. It looks more like a parkour playground than anything.
The combat is much improved, I really like how you can incorporate parkour into the attacks, and I don't mind that Faith can't use guns anymore cause like you said in the first game the gunplay felt out of place. But I wished the pursuit cops would make a return. Instead we get that pesky drone that's incredibly annoying to deal with until you have all upgrades. All of the enemies can be easily taken care of once you learn how to deal with each of them. Even those mini bosses are can be easily dispatched with a simple combination of moves and attacks. They don't offer much of a challenge at all, unlike the police cops from ME, those would give the player a hard time even if you tried to fight them one on one. And the invincibility frames during light attack combos is silly, but I understand that they done that for the sake of balance.
One thing I find really annoying though, especially after you finished the entire game and its just trying to explore the city, is the cops. As soon as they see Faith they'll engage in combat and start shooting straight away. And they can even see her through walls and buildings. And if you so much as touch one of them, they'll consider you "armed and dangerous" and will send a chopper after you, and having to escape the cops time and time again so you can resume exploring just becomes a chore. Its even more frustrating during covert side missions, where the game spawns way more police scout parties, often in places where you can't really avoid them. You can fail these missions even when actively trying to avoid the cops just because the game spawns so many, that if they see you for too long they'll actively begin chasing you.
The movement is much more fluid than the first game, with a lot more moves and combinations, which I really enjoy. But sometimes Faith can still have these derp moments where she'll wallrun instead of wallclimb, or vice versa, and you'll fall to your death, or she vaults over an object that you meant to climb on and fall. Or sometimes she'll fail to springboard even though you're holding jump action the entire time. But those moments only happen once in a while and overall the movement is pretty solid, feels better than in the first ME. That's about all the criticism I have for this game. Catalyst is a lot of fun and I enjoyed it a lot, so much that I grinded all of the achievements for it. I feel bad for the people that put down the game because of the classic moves being locked behind upgrades, it really doesn't take much time to unlock everything and enjoy the game at its full potential. If you're reading this and you're one of those people that played the first game and enjoyed but never gave this one a try, I definitely recommend, you'll not regret it.

    • @Tymptra
      @Tymptra  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Agree with you that there are still derp moments, but in this game they are user error most of the time ;) Also agree that the cops at the end could be toned down a bit. It makes sense that they are more active than at the start of the game, but having to lose that chopper cause you wanted to fight a few enemies sucks. Wish there was a police escalation system.
      Thanks for the great comment!

ME:C is so criminally underrated. Turn off Runner Vision changes the game completely. A lot of the negativity was on the skill tree, which admittedly was unnecessary. The legacy missions were good though, and the open hub world is stunning.

    • @MadX8
      @MadX8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Yeah I agree about the Skill tree. It's not necessary and make New Game a bit of a hassle. But other than that, yeah, it's a fantastic game. Turning off runner vision isn't possible for me though as I would get lost or fall way too often (even after playing this game for years, no joke). But turning off the HUD is something everyone should do for sure.

Catalyst is definitely a hidden gem and it ts really a shame that it doesn't have any seqels yet. I still play it to this day, sometimes I just wander on the roofs enjoying the view and the beautiful atmosphere. For me the biggest issue was the very short story line without really meaningful ending, it felt that the struggles weren't really helped to move the story forward. In this regard the game really screams for a sequel, but I'm afraid it is not going to happen any time soon, altough there is literally an endless potential in this universe.

Mirrors edge should be a booming mainline franchise. maybe as used as a call of duty, 2 teams making games every a year. I’m still fascinated by kruger and his obsession to make society perfect by taking away so called freedom. Catalyst (and the Original ME) is a gem. Such a special game with a very unique atmosphere. Something about Catalyst feels incredible. There isn't one game that is perfect and Catalyst isn't an exception. Maybe some people won't like it, but it is one of my favourite games of all time (And I'm 40, I've played MANY games).
This game was absolutely stunning in 2016 and it does look good even today, especially the lighting...
You might not like it but if you never played Catalyst, you should play it.
I know it might be a controversial opinion but I do prefer Catalyst over the OG Mirror's Edge. Don't get me wrong, the OG is absolutely amazing but I've always felt a bit "trapped" in that game, because of the way it's been made (it's very linear). I've always been frustrated of not being able to explore the city.
Which is why Catalyst was an "open world" in the first place, because that's what people wanted. For some reason many didn't like it when Catalyst came out but for me, Catalyst is an upgrade in every way.
Anyway. YES, Catalyst is worth playing in 2023. Despite the fact that it's EA and Dice behind it and that it was a very expensive game to make, the game has the soul and heart of an indie game (in the best way possible). A unique experience.

    • @jimmythegamer2231
      @jimmythegamer2231 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I 100% agree with you. I've recently finished the OG Mirror's Edge and I just started playing Catalyst for 3-4 hours so far. And I honestly think that ME Catalyst is better than the original in almost every single way, and this is coming from someone who loved the original too.
Everything is just so smoother in Catalyst: the movement, the parkour, the gameplay, the combat, the graphics, etc. The addition of a grappling hook was awesome, and traversing the open world is just so fun. Yeah, sure, it's not the best open world out there from a design perspective and the side missions aren't award-winning or anything like that, but I honestly think the open world was a good idea because traversing it is so damn fun, just like how traversing open worlds is so fun in superhero games like Spiderman, Prototype, and Infamous.
The combat is also pretty good too, and I like how Faith's character is in this version of the game as well. While the animated cutscenes of the original had some charm to them, they were kinda rough-looking and lacking detail. The traditional realistic cutscenes here are better IMO.
Finally, Catalyst is one of the best-looking and most aesthetically-pleasing games I've ever played. Mirror's Edge's art style already looked great, but this looks insane.
I seriously have no idea why people and critics hated this game so much. It definitely does not deserve the 6/10 ratings it got, it's a minimum 8/10 I think. But personally I would give ME Catalyst a 9-9.5/10.

Thank you very much for this review! It was entertaining and helpful. I finished the original Mirror's Edge for the first time just a few days ago. I decided to look up Catalyst to see how much it was, and to my surprise it was on sale, so I looked for reviews to see if it was worth snagging. I was led to this video and you convinced me to give Catalyst a shot. I must say I was not disappointed at all. The switch to an Open World felt like such a natural progression for Mirror's Edge, and I think DICE / EA did a great job with rebooting movement, combat, the story, and the environment. All the side missions have kept and will continue to keep me busy for a long time to come, mostly because, as you said, they help the world feel so much more immersive. The biggest gripe I have so far is the gaps between zones. I try to avoid fast travel as much as possible, so going through those same transition areas each time does get tiring. If they ever do a third game, I REALLY hope they don't make the transitions so linear (although I assume this was done to keep the player locked to certain areas in the earlier stages of the game without huge, artificial world borders and whatnot). The original game was awesome in its own way, but I think Catalyst is better in just about every way it could be, even with its flaws. Thank you for convincing me to get this gem!

I think what turned me off right from the start was the artstyle change. What worked so well about the original art direction wasn't the primary colours or the minimalism, but the uncomfortable familiarity of concrete and steel and flimsy doors.
The shiny world of Catalyst feels like science fiction and a vision of a dystopian future.
But in Mirror's Edge, it's just a pretty standard modern city with something very "off". An uncanny valley representing a dystopian present. Nicely matching the themes of the story, this perfect city is literally thin as paint. The government only cares about the outward appearance. While the streets are clean, every backroom is full of rats and trash. The police are everywhere but are barely fit enough to run. Criminals going through the justice system spend more time outside on parade than in court. Cops shoot first and say "Do not run" afterwards. The surveillance network is omnipresent but is brought to its knees by breaking four of twelve servers in a single room. And of course all of these fences and gates which we associate with safety are bypassed like water through a napkin.
Merely content with imitating perfection, this city falls apart when you look the facade's seams. At the mirror's edge, you could even say.

The move from uncanny valley real distopia to full sci-fi is one of the things that bugged me about the sequel the most. Also I wish that they had spent more time fleshing out the world. The map itself is decent, but the world feels incredibly dead. NPCs standing still and staring at you, no other AI runners present etc. It doesn't feel like a community at all, it doesn't feel real at all. Why don't the NPCs, after you hand in your quest, walk to the nearest door and despawn? Why can't you meet other runners doing their business on the rooftops? You know how cool it would be to just run past each other, a quick wave to say hello, and move on? Or the fact that you can't ever crash a party or run through a crowd. All the rooftops you can actually move through are dead and empty, and NPCs are always on a different floor or behind a pane of glass. The conversation snippets, as good as they are, are not enough.
I like Catalyst, but I really hate how everything but the core gameplay loop of running falls apart.

@@B0mbshell_ Catalyst is a reboot though, not a sequel, hence why the change of atmosphere. Funny enough, that's this sc-fi dystopia that sold the game for me. The first game, as amazing as it is, felt just way too linear for me. Not to mention these stupid gunfights and the lack of connection with the city (because you go from a mission to another, you're missing this sense of being there). Catalyst really felt like an upgrade to me, but it's a very different game from the first one, which is a good thing for some, and a bad thing for the others.
But it's an endless "war" between people who prefer the first ME and people like me who prefer Catalyst.
We could all agree on the fact that we need another game though :D

I still love Catalyst, but yeah, the artstyle change didn't sit well with me, either. And the thing about NPCs is: it does not only fall short on the decorative NPCs standing around with nothing to do, the story itself just forgets half of the cast by the end. What happened to Birdman? Where's Nomad? I think a story with somewhat lower stakes and more everyday character interaction to show the ever-present struggle of having to live off-grid would have felt more true to the runner lifestyle and inherent criticism of corporatism of the setting.
Or to say it another way: so much potential for a sequel!

I'm a huge fan of the original, it's one of my favourite games of the 360 generation. Insanely underrated because it came out in the FPS craze of the late 00's/early 10's, so people complained about the lackluster combat and shooting mechanics. They all failed to realize that that was the point, it was not a game designed for combat but survival.
I never played Catalyst because of the bad rep it got back in the day, but I'll try it now based on your review. And the game is being sold for 3€ on the Xbox store, so little to lose if I somehow don't like it.
One thing I love without playing: the soundtrack. Solar Fields blew my mind in the original and Catalyst is no different. Amazing score.
    Great video 👍

the problem you mention for the open world and big physical barriers between districts, i think it's pretty much how real life city parkour works, if you ever got to do parkour in a city. you've gotta find ways to get from point A to point B but sometimes you can't just go in a straight line. xD
and about side missions in open world games, i have got to add, for a parkour game such as Catalyst, exploring the map is the best thing to experience for me, and that's the reason why i'm still playing the game from time to time. but by that i mean i liked collecting every single gridleak and finding every hidden bag and stuff like that. it's what side missions are made for, to make you explore the game (the map) even further. now that i have completed the game all i do is run, but collecting everything made me discover cool places i haven't even know about since i first got the game back in 2017, and i come back to these cool hidden places and i remember when i first discovered them ! and that's something i love in open world games, there are cool little details to discover even years later.
it's not about doing tasks and chores to unlock optimal equipment, it's about getting immersed in the world you're exploring. but that's just my way of playing games. :)

ME:C was one of the few games back then I actually bought at release and didn't wait for a sale, and boy I had a blast. The thing I prefer from the first game is the low-tech setting and the story hook of just having to save your sister, while the "oppressive tech-regime"-allures in Catalyse were really heavy-handed, and Faith's task of bringing down the Conglomerate with the power of parkour was nothing if not over-the-top. For everything else - I'm pretty much on board with Catalyst. It felt like the right step for next-gen back then, and would have been a solid foundation to further build the franchise on. Oh well. Maybe some day. I keep having faith.

The way you say they separate zones seems so great for older games. It seems to be these are loading / buffer zones, which we would hate now, and were surely annoying then, but if this was the alternative to lag spikes for loading like in old GTAs or a full on skyrim load screen seems way better.

I really hope certain people on youtube change their negative opinions on open world games, because this proves that they aren't all bad.
yes, there are good open world games, the genre as a whole isn't a big fail.
with that said, i have other reasons for not picking up this game.
people need to look at the game and realize that some need to be open world while others would do better without it.
open world isn't the issue, its game design, game content, and if the game doesn't try to get carried to greatness by graphics alone (like BDO and BlessOnline, terrible games. I'd go as far as they started us down the wrong trends for graphics **motion blur that doesn't stop blurring everything when you are holding still** but thats another subject)

I think that it is similar to AC: Black Flag. A fine game, but not what people were expecting in a Mirror's Edge game. It refined the chunkiness of the first game, but also added in things that fans of the first game were not looking for. As for the story, I feel like the story of the first game (and other parts of the game) get judged by how good people feel like it COULD have been, instead of what it was. The first game felt like there was a lot more to the story that the devs wanted to put in and did not have the time, but the second one didn't have that feeling.

The serious and badass Faith was great with her sister Kate. I miss the original story reboot was not necessary we need ME 2 with same approach. Hell even the concept designs and marketing arts are way more better in the first game. Atmosphere was original. This cyberpunk aesthetic is not original since it is a Mirror's Edge skinned cyberpunk theme. The original one had it's own theme like really original. Who even paints the buildings white right? It was the cleaner versions of the buildings of today making it more reasonable and grounded but also original.

Too many chores (at the very least they should make collectibles trackable)
Basic moves locked until you upgrade

Dashes and delivery missions were great; the best part of the game for me
    City looks dope

Despite Catalyst having more forced-engagement combat sections overall, I felt it was so much LESS forced simply because it flowed so much better. The combat was much more enjoyable and fluid, much less clunky. The combat is the main reason I won’t replay the original ME again, despite the good points.

  • @SSaNNEE100

I agree. For me ME: Catalyst is the better one of Mirror’s Edge games and for me it is the freedom. Catalyst is kinda therapeutic, a relaxing run around the city. On PC one mod lets you go to the streets and explore even more of the city. I like doing the missions again always trying to make them faster and more fluidly. First ME is weighty as you mentioned but it has it’s own charm. Just the linear level design does not allow the freedom what I love in video games.

Mirror's Edge was like Velvet Underground & Nico. It was an obscure little singleplayer gem that was fun and casual. The problem is fan loyalty, number of fans and brand awareness are independent numbers. I liked the original cause it was bold with minimalism, the sequel was trying to be bigger then it's niche.
They just plugged good sounding tropes together: open-world (even though it looks the same, and is awkwardly divided), sharing tips with other players (even though it's mainly singleplayer), a skill tree, a love story and crisp cutscene graphics.
It was almost a Bud Light level finger to the fans, or like how nobody makes Singleplayer Ww2 games anymore.

However, people won't be able to get the Plat/1000G anymore in 2 days (Dec 8th, 2023) due to EA shutting down the online servers. with how crappy gaming today is, this game is a gem. The only issue with it is that you need to install origin for PC, and it has no native upgrade of any kind for the current console gen meaning it is not updated to be 1080p with adjusted graphics, AND you need an EA account for both platform types.
depending on what you're willing to deal with, this game goes on sale for $2 occasionally, so it's worth it. I have yet to try the original Mirror's Edge.

Gaming is crappy nowadays? AAA companies been doing ok instead of godawful, many of the long running franchises got what could be genuinely considered their best games (breath of the wold, street fighter 6, etc)
All this while not bringing up the indie game boom that we're living jn, where we unironcally get a game that pushes the medium forward every year or two
There's a lot of bad of course but ignoring the good is just delusional
