Hi Friends, I hope you are having a marvellous Holiday time! It's almost New Year and I wanted to share with a portion of a course I filmed with singer songwriter Pete Mroz. Anyone who is on the email list will have got this as a free Christmas gift! I hope you've enjoyed it and you're mixing the files as we speak! Haha Seriously, Happy New Year! You are an amazing community! I feel truly blessed being able to come to these pages and read such amazing comments and marvellous feedback!
Merry Christmas and happy new year Mr. Huart! May you record a tutorial on how to record vocal backing(like for a song) or group of vocals. I especially want to do something like a cappella. Thank you!
I LOVE the API 525 on vocals. It's been on just about every vocal I've done since the 70's (although often in series with a Fairchild) from Cyndi Lauper to The Outfield to Pat Benatar to Joan Osborne. can't beat it. I wish they made a good AAX plug in version!
Wow.... that's an amazing sound! Really loved the pararell drum and sub channels A question here: When making copys of the vocals and EQing each one separately, don't you get phase issues unless you use a linear-phase EQ? Thank you for this videos Warren
Thanks ever so much Marcos! Yes, I love doing that trick! I've been doing it for years either on a consoles or in-the-box! Interesting question about linear vs non linear EQs, I've asked Mastering Engineers about linear EQs and most don't use them. I always find the best mixers I know listen, rather than look. I hope you a marvellous and Happy New Year!
i want to know how does one connect all of this equipment. i do understand how do you use things with a patch bay, but how do you incorporate so many ins and outs and busses... the DAW, the console, of that wonderful hardware things...
Hi Warren, thx for the great tutorial. You're the best. Not only because you make great music, but also because you communicate with this community. There are a lot a great engineers who upload vids on youtube. But a lot don't even answer your questions even though they ask to leave questions below the vids. I do ask questions, because I want to learn more every day. I have learned a lot from both your youtube video's as from those I have purchased from the academy. There is one thing I miss from the tutorials and that is how you build a static mix (balance / panning etc). Can you include this in your next tutorial? Thx and have a marvelous time building the static mix.
I have a large drum set. i just purchase the M5 Rode mics for overheads. what do you like XY or one left and one right. some people say you catch more with the mics spread out. has opposed to XY.
Hi Shawnee Hodgson marvellous question! For me it’s what I want the desired effect to be! If I’m looking for a perfect stereo image then an XY is really hard to beat! If I want width and more cymbals then a spaced paired measures equally from the snare creates not only a wonderful stereo but focuses more on the cymbals. Happy New Year!!
Just to let everyone know I was using Behringer B1 vocal mics and they pick up the sound of the TV 20FT away. after I purchase RODE M5 everything change. I muted all my mics and left the overheads on M5. recorded the drums and I was very happy, M5 pick up every drum and cymbals. Thanks again for the great response. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL... Thanks to Warren Huart for all time you give to all.
truly marvelous indeed !! : ) and im not in the room but i can hear that that is hooked up very nicely. i think your are right, that is a goooooooood sounding board!! : D thats what they pay you for ! haha. to make it sound like that lol ! its nice to watch you using the board in real time becos i havent much experience in boards ! : ) i just twiddle on my little 8 track when trakcing haha. but its the tweaks at every stage that delivers that massive sound at the end isnt it ! rock on sir.
Thanks Warren. What are the notes on the sides of you screen? I also just bought an LG 34" Ultra-wide screen. Its much better than the 27" screen I had.
Yes, mine is also an LG Ultra wide! I love it!! The notes are inputs and outputs from pres etc to the DAW interface. I hope you have a marvellous new year!
I love imperfection in timing, i had to midi the drums mostly, it takes a while to adjust the imperfection. I use mainly electronic drums in my "film" projects, these have always my humanizer workflow, i think it is not standard :-)
I am sorry that this comment has nothing to do with the video. I just wanted to ask you something. Your videos are amongst the best out there for learning because of how open you are and how much experience you have. I encorporate iPads along with my windows based laptop using an iConnectaudio4+ interface. What I want to ask is if you use iPads at all in your work. My ear is not the greatest so I depend on opinions of people like you. I am technically good. I can figure things out and am good at setting up hardware and software. I would like to see you doing something serious using iPads. I think ios is a very serious contender in music production. I believe that one can have a professional recording studio using only iPads to replace windows or Mac laptops. Of course I don’t say it’s better, but certainly as good and definitely very much less expensive and incredibly more portable. People with good ears tell me that the sounds are as good, There is at least one DAW (Auria Pro) that has all the professional abilities of the good computer DAWs.
I see iPads used instead of a control surface, which I think is cool. Otherwise, the biggest issue I see is processing power (both CPU and RAM). Bigger track count, either for tracking or mixing, puts more strain on the CPU and RAM, so there's a good reason why pro studios use the hardware that they do. For some situations I bet an iPad would be great, but within certain limits (maybe you only record vocals to a two-track, for example). But I think it's in your best interest to over-equip yourself so you never have to say "no" to an artist or producer. Maybe you'll never need all 10 cores in your processor in your Mac Pro, but the one day that you need to because the artist wants something crazy, it'll make you look great and it'll provide the artist with what they'd hoped for.
Hi Perry, that's a marvellous and HUGE question! I honestly have only used iPads for building beats and recording ideas, although those have all gone on to be major ideas in other songs! I would have to have personal experience using an iPad professionally for recording to comment properly! I wish I could help more, have a marvellous new year!
Thanks for that info. I wonder what other productions were ipad only. I asked this because I am wondering if the only issue with iPads is the processing power and if the sound quality etc is just as good. The answer will tell me if when iPads become as powerful as laptops that they could replace computers, when portability is needed, without losing anything except maybe some preferred apps not having iOS versions. For me, I much prefer working on an iPad Pro than a laptop. Its just more fun with no negatives. I would love to see warren trying to record and mix a song using an iPad as a test. His experience would be an incredible thing because he is a top level engineer. Do it, warren. I have not see. A true professional like you doing it. Why not? Imagine if you could record almost any song using an iPad Pro instead of a computer. Ok forget those massive 200 track projects. I am talking about up to, say 48 tracks. You would have to freeze tracks, but so what.
Hi Perry, interesting questions! As long as the analog signal is converted well then we are in good shape! I have no doubt that music recorded and mixed on an iPad will continue to get better and better!! Happy New Year!
Hi mil pro haha yes indeed! That was an idea I’ve had for a few years! I designed it with my friend Michael Stucker and BAE are manufacturing it! I will do a video soon I promise!
Hi! I think I've heard Warren's opinion on them before and my opinion aligns with his. Generally speaking, I hate when they're used on the master. I find they're most effective on effects like reverb and delay. I also will widen synths and key parts from time to time. great stereo width is created with contrast, not widening the entire mix. Hope this helps!
Sounds weird but I like to use it to make drums smaller in a rock / metal context. I work with sampled drums and they're usually insanely wide to the point where the outmost cymbals can clash with hard-panned guitars. Paradoxically, this can help to make the mix feel wider because the "edges" are much more defined. As Lucas said, contrast is key ... and that means creating spaces by any means possible, be it EQ or smart stereo field arrangement.
LoerdNoerd I agree...but you know the best way for me now is to look at a goniometer or something to see the stereo image.....now you can judge exactly what do you want to achieve. Anyway..Thank you for the nice information.
I'm sure at least some of you have been Sleepwalkers at some point. I have but only on a rare few occasions. LoL....I'm laughing my ass off right now because I literally just caught myself *SleepMixing* ....swear to God.... I'm dying over it!! While awake, I had the song on "Repeat" as I often do and I must have been doing it for around 30-40 minutes because I became semi-aware right before I woke up and there were some obvious changes to the mix I definitely do not remember making consciously LoL!! So, some of you may be wondering how it turned out...... well, it's absolutely Dreadful....just Awful

Hi kingdizzyworld thanks ever so much!!
So in regards to the EQ/ds combo, your signal flow goes EQ1 -> DS -> EQ2 -> DS? Awesome technique
Hope you had a great Christmas.
Thanks ever so much! I hope you had a Happy Christmas too!

Thanks.
