Thanks Warren! Not just for the valuable insight, but also for the way you clearly and concisley explain the concepts. I found this one particularly helpful as I've been struggling lately to make my vocal tracks stand out as the centerpiece of the mix. Today I used Saturation, Slap delay & High boost followed by a de-esser and the difference is AMAZING. Keep up the great work.
One of the neat features of Studio One is something called the inspector which is a mini mixer/console inside the whole thing. And it has something called Event FX. (in S1 events are what is called clips I think in Pro tools...a section of a track.) So I will often use multiple different effects like delay, deessing, reverb using this feature. Great trick Warren and loads of fun as it allows for surprises, unexpected things which keep the song interesting. The octave lower did catch me off guard...usually I'm trying to reove low end to avoid mud and much in the mids from guitars, snare and so on. Have to see how that works with my cranky little voice.. Have a Bodacious Day.

Massive thank you for putting me on to Lo-Fi... I had no idea this program existed, but literally no other "bit-crusher" type plugins have the character this plugin has. All of the others I've tried are either too subtle, or too aggressive and crappy sounding, but Lo-Fi really nails the character of older sampling type units. Im excited to try some of the other ones to see if they're as quality as this one is. Cheers!
Hi Warren, since I started mixing 5 years ago, I have found I make better decisions in all other aspects of my life. Have you found this to be true? I guess it's something about becoming efficient in recognizing when stuff works and when it doesn't and the work flow we develop for this in mixing bleeds into our daily life. Keep up the great work!

Awesome tips Warren! I really like the one about boosting the high end and use the de esser and then repeating the same process. This tip as well as the other ones will greatly help me out! Also can you use that tip for male vocals? I hope you have a wonderful day!
When adding multiple effects/plugins, EQs, DeEssers, Compressors, are you adding multiple of each on the same channel? Or are you adding each one through a separate BUS and adjusting the amount of each through each BUS? You mention using small amounts of each multiple times to make the vocal sound more smooth. I’m using Logic. :-) I’m very much a novice when it comes to mixing/producing. It’s very intimidating

Thankyou, I hope I encouraged this video from the question I has asked previously. I see that it depends on the style and genre of what the Vocalist/Band is going for, as well as the Engineer(s) &/or Producer(s) artistic interpretation/discretion - input/output, that help the Vocalist/Band out with their audio aesthetics and direction. From what I gather too, continual consultation on both sides is a must, this shows professionalism by all involved, encouraging a very trusting relationship, for a far better polished product and alot of happy faces at the end of the day for future patronage all round if and when needed again. It was very interesting to see this, so I have a better understanding, and as such, TF I can read between the lines on occasions LOL. Keep up the good work Mr Huart and Cheers. :)

I don't know if you've done this before Warren and I Missed it, but in 2005 we did a CD and we went to a local studio and laid down 10 songs in an 8 hour session, but a vocal trick I used was I would duplicate the main Vocal Track and nudge it back about two or three keyboard back arrow keys and it would give almost a slap back delay with no decay. I'm sure you probably done this, we were on a very strict budget, really thickened up the vocals and was almost unperceivable. I even did it on the background harmonies. Like I said you've probably done it. It was like a slap back echo with no effect at all.
Some of you may be thinking 'I don't even hear a difference' with what he is doing. Let me tell you, you are almost right. Tweaking a vocal takes a lot of subtle movement to make it sound a certain way, and depending on what else is going on with the mix. When you start trying these, you will notice at the end how far your vocals have gone when all those little steps, layers and effects come together, I promise you! The best mixing (sometimes unfortunately) is when the listener can't pick out all these different effects distinctly, but just hears a cohesive, balanced, amazing vocal and mix.

Love boosting the highs, but sometimes the De-Esser isn't enough to get rid of the harsh S's so in that case go in and manually knock a few DBs off the S's with automation! Great video Warren
Hi Warren.I have questions.I was looking at a technique that saturates only the high Frequency.Must use Hp filter. Again Add sound to original. Effect name is "sparkle". Used if you lost live feeling.I try on male vocal, working fine. My question is do you make same saturation frequency for male and female vocals.
Marvellous question! I would suggest experimenting, yes and no is my answer! Every vocal male or female reacts differently so you will have to experiment a little with saturation!
I saw in a video james hetfield from metallica using lower octave trick in his vocal when mixing.Then ı start to use it.I use waves doubler one octave up one octave down Works well at main vocals.
On this great female vocalist, you dropped in 12 semi-tones down. What do you do with male vocalist, obviously not the opposite or do you? Great session, as always. I've embarked on remixing my 60-70 tunes using tips I've learned over the past couple years. Massive job!

I can't speak for Warren here, but I typically do that because I like to be conservative with saving Insert slots on my Vox track for other plugins. There's that as well as I use it as a send in case I want to give other tracks the same slap delay. Same thing with reverbs; I just find it much faster and even more effective that way. :)
DoTheDaringDew I make aux tracks for effects to make the mix more cohesive and less cluttered and like you say it makes it easy to send other tracks to that aux. However in this case the slap delay is only on the vocal so there would be no use having a whole new aux on the mixer which would make it incrementally more difficult to see the entire session at a given time (which is why once I have the funds I will buy a high resolution 4k or 5k display to fit everything in). In regards to your other point, I use logic which has a maximum insert count of 15 instead of pro tools’ 10.
Hi Vincent, I don;t think about it in terms of slots, I just like the independent control. Plus, it allows you to send multiple instruments or vocals to the same reverb.
Produce Like A Pro must be a habit thing then - your response is much appreciated :) EDIT: I didn’t see the second comment. It takes such a minuscule amount of time to hold alt and copy a plugin from one track to another that I find it simpler to do rather than making my mixer more busy (I like things to be neat), but I suppose everyone has a different workflow.

Did you know Klanghelm has a saturation plug-in? The IVGI is the free version. Not sure if it produces the sound your looking for here but it came to mind. --- The low octave did scare me as it made me think of, "It puts the lotion on the skin." (Silence of the Lambs).
What's more recommended when using time based effects (delays/reverbs) to use them in mono or stereo?? I've been for some time using them exclusively in stereo thinking that is better but it seems many people use them in mono. my concern is mainly with reverbs.
Hi Avior, some of these sounds are DI's and others are Virtual Instruments! Most of the guitars were with an SM57, which is inexpensive! The only expensive thing would be the BAE 312 Mic Pre I used, but I also used my Audient iD4 as well!
I don´t know if i´ve understood it right. So we can use different effects the same kind of at different parts of the songs BUT AS WELL PARALLEL? (f.e. 2-3 reverbs/delays at once in the same part of the song and blend those together?)
I have one question. What do you use for recording your voice in your tutorial so that I can hear it clearly also when you turn around your head 90 degrees?
Hope you're doing marvelously well in all the heat today. If I was to make up a list like yours, I would put @ #1......Make sure you have a great singer. By that I mean trained, experienced, & good fit for the job @ hand, and doesn't have "the attitude".....then, everything else would work so much smoother.....Example....I'd rather have Norm from This Old House do a rebuild on my house than Uncle Festus, even tho he means well...Have a great day :)
Dumb beginners question here: What' the advantage of adding effects (vocal distortion/thickening for example) to a bus instead of adding directly to the vocal track insert directly? You videos are great, BTW.

For Beiber, hmm lot's of very detailed eq and compression!

I apply straight on the vocal and/or vocal sub! Sometimes many times!
Did you know Klanghelm has a saturation plug-in? The IVGI is the free version. Not sure if it produces the sound your looking for here but it came to mind. --- The low octave did scare me as it made me think of, "It puts the lotion on the skin." (Silence of the Lambs).

I'm mixing a track with a less then stellar vocal in all senses, I need anything that can help, the rest of the track is slapping!
What's more recommended when using time based effects (delays/reverbs) to use them in mono or stereo?? I've been for some time using them exclusively in stereo thinking that is better but it seems many people use them in mono. my concern is mainly with reverbs.

Hi Avior, some of these sounds are DI's and others are Virtual Instruments! Most of the guitars were with an SM57, which is inexpensive! The only expensive thing would be the BAE 312 Mic Pre I used, but I also used my Audient iD4 as well!

I don´t know if i´ve understood it right. So we can use different effects the same kind of at different parts of the songs BUT AS WELL PARALLEL? (f.e. 2-3 reverbs/delays at once in the same part of the song and blend those together?)

Hope you're doing marvelously well in all the heat today. If I was to make up a list like yours, I would put @ #1......Make sure you have a great singer. By that I mean trained, experienced, & good fit for the job @ hand, and doesn't have "the attitude".....then, everything else would work so much smoother.....Example....I'd rather have Norm from This Old House do a rebuild on my house than Uncle Festus, even tho he means well...Have a great day :)

Dumb beginners question here: What' the advantage of adding effects (vocal distortion/thickening for example) to a bus instead of adding directly to the vocal track insert directly? You videos are great, BTW.
