Charlie was rejected by his momma, wife and daughter nursed and fawned over him and he bonded with me for some reason, I love him like my child, and he loves to ride in the truck, it’s so true about the barking and especially shedding, Charlie is such a great dog and is a loveable dog…wouldn’t trade him for anything!!! We live in a semi big town with a big backyard!!!

Mine is a city (well, town) boy. I've had him since 9 weeks. There were so many times I considered getting rid of him because he was biting the crap out of me. It was brutal and endless. I could not wear him out. One day I remember, he was full puppy mode for 10 hours.
    He's extremely intelligent but stubborn.
I can barely watch any tv/youtube/play games, because everything makes him bark and run around. You'd really be surprised how many shows have (dogs barking in distance) sound effects. His tail is the perfect height to knock everything off my desk.
He loves to dig and dig and dig, especially after it rains.
I'm glad I stuck by him though. He's by far the funniest dog I've ever had. He's incredibly weird in the best way possible.
And there's nothing like having a gigantic ball of fur get in bed with you, throw his head down with his tush up in the air, then slams his backside down on you like a felled tree. He's such a cuddly guy.

@@jasonandzshopa I always found it interesting that my guy never barks at the dog park. It doesn't matter if other dogs are barking, if new dogs are coming in, if people are walking their dogs outside the fence.
I find it interesting, because one time my mom put a planter full of dirt under a tv tray...it took me 2 hours to find what he was barking at and why he refused to go into the kitchen.
I've also seen him bark and refuse to go outside because I had an orange extension cord running out back.

I’ve had dogs my whole life. This time, I said let’s rescue a small non-shedder, a quiet, can be off leash kind.
Flash forward- she’s outside on her lead barking at deer as I’m picking up fur. I’ve got a couple bruises from her Pyre paw. I keep a towel nearby for drool & a brush handy for mats. Not much compared to the love and loyal protection she gives my family & me.

These are hands down the best dogs ever........ for the right people. Most people should not own them. We have 2 of them, but we also live in a area where during Halloween you have a better chance of a deer knocking on your door asking for candy than you would a kid. They bark, a lot and very loud. Training them not to bark goes against what has been ingrained in this breed for thousands of years. They are very powerful and intelligent, so they can be easily destructive if left inside a lot. They don't always like other dogs as they can see them as a potential threat and with a bite force around 500psi, they can do a lot of damage if they feel the need to. They shed a lot, constantly, and even more twice a year before summer and winter. That pyr paw is very painful, and that's when they are being nice. But their capacity for loyalty, protection and love is so great that the rest doesn't matter. But do what is best for this breed and dont get one if you shouldn't have one. I take mine out a lot to socialize, my male absolutely love children and is so sweet to them. But i get a lot of people who see them, see how sweet and soft and only the good stuff from them in public, and they say, I should get one of these and i tell them they shouldn't unless they do the research and know what they are getting themselves into. Both of mine are rescues. My female we got at 12 weeks from a shelter and my male we got from a family when he was a year old. They couldn't handle him. He would snap when given treats and he did not respond to any commands. In the first month we had him i was able to give him treats using my mouth and he was responding to more commands than my female would. In the year and a half that we have had him, he has become my inseparable companion and we have a bond like i have never had with anyone or anything in my life.

We've gotten some Nice notes from our neighbors and hes awesome about not barking at night (like the unicorn of GPs, I know?!). But he does have severe separation anxiety, has caused a fair bit of destruction, and barks so loud you can hear it 2 houses down outdoors, with with windows closed and him inside our house! Hes done his job scaring off bears, cougars, eagles, cats, butterflies, fall leaves, passing breezes and flea farts though! Hes 13 years old and a marvelous old man, but these are not obedience dogs and we worn people not to wear black to visit us. 😂

I agree with everything you say until the biting I have never in all the years I’ve had great Pyrenees indoors had them even aggressive in the slightest. Now I’m not a novice I’ve had dogs my whole life so my dogs are trained but like my last male I never until he had a heart attack at almost 13 did I ever even hear him growl. My female did not like other female dogs but only if they came to our house they could go on walks just fine with a leash of course but when my daughter was 2 she was sleeping on the couch and fell off the couch onto my female that was sleeping, my female did not even wake up and she was four years old at that time the dog. My daughter would cuddle up to our male like no other and our male great Pyrenees loved every moment of it. When our dog was a few years old my daughter was petting his belly, she was young and she said what is this pink crayon mommy and pinched it, he jumped up walked away didn’t even yipe, nip nothing and at that point if ever I would’ve expected him to bite. Now my daughter got in trouble for that I am only being honest about that because it shows how tolerable he was to anything. When he was one years old he jumped out of our car window which I could not believe he could ever do because we were picking my kids up at the bus stop, he got so excited because there was like 30 kids there and relished in the love from all of them. I am just really surprised at hearing that they have nipped & bit, I completely believe you I’m not saying it’s not true I just can’t see it. We had a Pomeranian after our female had passed away and she ruled our male great Pyrenees that was already seven years old at that time.
Now I could completely understand the temperament being different versus an indoor dog rather than a working dog, they have different duties and probably thought process. I do not think someone that has never had a stubborn dog should adopt a great Pyrenees, there’s quite a few things that need to be dealt with and could get out of hand if you didn’t know what you were doing. The running we learned real early on that if they get out especially if you have a small kids and they have friends when they are opening and closing that door that great Pyrenees will find a way to get out and where they’re running to we will never understand. Our female that was a very big girl she was 32 inches at her shoulders she locked into a early teen girl that lived on another block and once the girl grabbed her collar she took her to our house and anytime she would ever get out that’s exactly where she would go is to find this girl, she was now part of the family. And so those are the things between the barking and the hair and the stubbornness, these are not dogs for someone that doesn’t know what they’re doing. I would highly recommend a groomer also unless you know very well what you are doing grooming because it’s a lot.
I do appreciate your video and I’m taking to heart everything that you said. There are always exceptions to every rule I’m just saying I’ve had a few that’s all.

    • @jasonandzshopa
      @jasonandzshopa  ปีที่แล้ว

The biting is more common than you think. I’m on several Great Pyrenees pages and I see a few posts a week where an owner says they have bitten someone and need to get rid of them. It’s usually just a nip

    • @mommashawna707
      @mommashawna707 ปีที่แล้ว

@@jasonandzshopa I do believe you I am not saying I don’t please know that. I also belong to so many great Pyrenees sites and I watch three different ones that are on farms and I’ve never heard of this before until just recently. It seem to start with that country singers wife or ex-wife that sent their great Pyrenees to a farm after biting their child. It just really surprises me honestly I’m not saying that to be a smart ass or anything I just can’t explain to you how docile mine have been. Like I said when she pinched his wee wee if he was gonna bite that would’ve been the time. That was a talk I never wanted to have again explaining to my daughter that was maybe 3 to 4 why she could not do such a thing. My daughter is now 25 and she is just one of those people that animals follow, like a Pied Piper. She did however have our border collie nip her in the chin when she was young so I was hyper aware of that. He also had OCD very badly and when we had our last move before he passed away he lost his mind, he started peeing all over pacing back-and-forth it was like the move just made him so unstable and that’s when the bite happened also. And here I thought great Pyrenees were the perfect dog for kids but maybe it was just mine.

My husband and I have had six Pyrenees along with living within the city. Along with those six Pyrs, two other rescues. Eight dogs and all of them rescues. Pyrs bark quite a bit and shed fur at different times of the year, but this breed is wonderful. We are dog lovers. Period. Always vet any breed/mix bred dog, as much as you can, and patience and acceptance are the keys to owning a pet of any kind. Our second and third rescues were returned pets. That is a heartbreaking situation. Both loved and lived long lives.

She is definitely stubborn, but can be reasoned with with coaxing or a little reward. The shedding is a challenge, but easily manageable with regular bathing, grooming and lots of combing & brushing, which she seems to enjoy & it helps her bond with me, too. Pyr's are not really the best choice for first time dog owners, however.

Many can adapt to city life, but it takes training, discipline, patience, and regular exercise to overcome the nocturnal barking. A Pyr that is is physically and mentally exhausted at the end of the day is a Pyr that sleeps at night. Socialization can not be emphasized enough, as they need to learn all of the things that they are -not- guarding you from. They will guard you from anything new, unfamiliar, or that they have previously had a bad experience with.
But they are easier to adapt to in the country. Sleep with earplugs if you have to, but if there are no neighbors within a mile, nobody will complain about the barking.
Quick note: They *need* to be fenced, even in rural areas. They will roam for 10+ miles if not controlled. "Invisible fence" is dangerous, because they will chase a predator away, ignoring the fence, then get shocked when they try to return. Invisible fence can be used to augment a physical fence.... They are escape artists, and need to be trained to a fence. Best is to have an 60" fence with an electric top wire and add a bottom wire if they dig out.
We do not have our full property fenced, but have been able to provide more than an acre to the dogs by using inexpensive poultry net with a solar charger. It's only 48" tall, but once shocked, dogs do not challenge it.

My neighbor had one it barked and barked and barked Day and night just walking past her door it goes crazy Especially because they need tons of exercise and she never even takes him for a walk they become aggressive With a lot of anxiety when they're cooped up it's not fair to them They love wide birth to run and forage And protect It's not a good situation when they're protecting a little house your walls shake when they bark Their restlessness is apparent All they want is to get outside And have a job to do I also noticed he won't listen to a thing she says when they're not happy nobody's happy And that's when they can become a little dangeryes they might not even mean to hurt you But pent-up energy for them is like poison

My Great Pyr mix is super attentive and barks at every noise as you say. When we go to open areas I have to look for kids because she wants to herd them just like she wants to herd sheep, goats, alpaca, rabbits, etc ... she runs at them barking and will nip and their sides to turn them. I take her on a late nite hike every night and she sets the route and diligently covers all the different paths over a week, one day route 1, then route 2, then route 3, etc ... she knows where she has checked and where she hasn't. She tells me if there are mountain lions around or coyotes by the way she talks and reacts. When I'm not feeling well she walks slower and stays closer. Just recently she had a rough week because she hates fireworks, and got a UTI ... it can't all be beer and skittles for a Pyrenees in Texas (I rescued her here and had no idea what she was ... it's crazy to have a dog like her in Texas).
Oh, and she LOVES the snow, and it doesn't hurt her at all.

We have a pull out sofa that now is a permanent big ass bed for him lol

My best friend has one in town. This dudes whiny judgmental tone is a turn off, but at least he recognizes you can make it work if your willing to try hard enough.
He's amazing though. Definitely a massive teddy bear, gets super upset when I come over, because I've been gone, he has to check me out and whimpers due to too much emotion. Calms down when hugged and petted, AFTER sniffs.
It is work though. He gets walked, ALOT, when I'm I walk him, we go on 40 minute walks at least, around the entire apartment complex, same thing when they take him...he's got to patrol the territory and whatnot.
I love the shit out of this dog though. Seriously, you just have to care enough, and have the time and/or people to invest in them.
He protects the complex cat, to the point she now sleeps on the patio, and hangs out there when it's hot, or just to snuggle with him.
Same thing with my Queensland healer Beagle mix, he adopted her (basically) into his little herd-pack, and when we take them to the park...he has to follow her around to make sure she's safe.
😅 She actually doesn't like that, and gives him all the sass. She's less cuddly 😢, but is ridiculously, stupidly smart.
Anyway, I'm just saying...any working, or 'aggressive' breed?
They just need someone who cares about them, and treats them like a sentient, sapient creature, with big huge feelings, and can make sure they get enough walks and stimulation.
We also rescued him though. Not sure any of us would've decided to get this particular breed in an apartment, maybe as Mastiff. It's not necessarily size that matters.

From my own experience: yes, tons of shedding, but that pales in comparison to the barking. The barking WILL drive you insane. It's endless. It's their main joy in life. You have to just numb yourself to it.
Mine, too, really, really, really wants to chase cars, and especially motorcycles.
And they are POWERFUL. They can easily knock you down or otherwise injure you without meaning to. If you have to walk one on a leash, you need to be big and strong. My sisters who are about 5'1/5'2 are pulled around like nothing, no control over her whatsoever, while even I (5'11) have been pulled over occasionally and even sprained my knee once.
They're incredibly loving and protective dogs, but they're first and foremost WORKING dogs.

We have a large backyard but I don't trust our fences vs the GP so we set up a zip line system through the trees and we hook up her leash on her harness so she can run around with lots of room and we just keep an eye on her so she doesn't get tangled up. But she's the biggest couch potato and loves sleeping inside. Granted it's probably because we're in Texas and we have AC inside. The shedding is real and we just learned to live cleaning up Pyrean snow all year round.

We have big male, in the city. We have 2 other dogs for him to play with and a good size fenced yard. Sun or snow they all get 2 hours outside minimum every day. If you have one inside get a robot vacuum. They are challenging to raise but worth it. He our 3rd GP. With patience you can reduce the barking but when you let him he is going to patrol the fence line and bark. It’s his nature, ya just have to accept it. Nice video.

Mine never jumps on anyone. We trained her not to jump. It might be cute for a picture but, it can be dangerous for a large dog to jump up on anyone.
I have an acre and a quarter - I would not recommend a GP for an apartment or a house with a tiny yard.
I also recommend getting a rescue GP.

Having owned and loved Pyrs for some 30+ years have to disagree a bit with having them in non farm, open area environments. Mine have always lived in a home with neighbors on either side and across the street. We recently moved to a small community with our two recuses. After being here for about a month one neighbor remarked that all he knew had cancelled their ADT contracts. Yes they bark but also understand is that they're barking is also their way of communicating with you. And over time they can train you as much or more than you train them. And they do need regular exercise. 30 minutes or so at a brisk walk keeps them happy and also lets them learn about their environment. Pyr’s are extremely intelligent but very hard headed at the same.

One of my friends has this breed. We love him and he's so sweet docile and cuddly seeming with most folks. But don't be fooled, if you're out walking with the dog and he gets surprised or sees someone coming up unexpectedly he'll snap his jaws, bark ferociously and want to rip that person's face off. I'm not sure you can turn off that hypervigilant nature that's in their genetics. Probably wide roaming spaces are best.

Late to the party going thru your old vids now. The only bad thing about shelters is they will not let you adopt a Pyr if you don't have a real fence. They won't even consider it with an E fence. Pyrs can be trained on E fences w out breaking thru. My Pyr has not broke thru the e fence in 7 years it can be done. I hired a trainer so it was done properly. In MA they are strict and won't adopt out if that's the case. Not sure how they are where you are. I didn't want to but I have a huge yard and can't fence it all. Over an acre.

    • @amystj515
      @amystj515 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

They should not be so black and white about that rule. They should look at the whole pic. Is the dog trainable on an e fence. Yard area ect. They need to look at it on an individual basis not just disqualify one automatically.

When people are new to dog ownership thinking it will be fun to get a huge breed they don't really understand the amount of training involved and the financial responsibility. If you have a pup that weighs 91kg you better be the alpha in the house. Well trained and obedient huge breeds are great to have around. Typically those are great guard dogs no training necessary.

My dog is very good at imprinting. Every cat chicken lamb and dog that is here he'll protect with his life. And yes people! Some I'll allow them to get close but others I won't. Therefore he'll want to know that smell of the person I'm a bit standoffish with. They're smart as all getout and take a lot of cues from mom. Mom take her cues from him outside. He can smell what I can't. It's a DEFINITE BOND!

That Pyr is on the small side - and it was not fighting at all - just playing with the other dog and played the 'submissive’ role. We have litter mates (brother and sister) and this is exactly how they ‘play’. In reality they are teaching each other how to defend their ‘flock’. Pry’s are extremely powerful dogs and their bite force puts Bull dogs, Rottweilers and a lot of others to shame. Not to long ago a 20 month old Pyr, not even fully grown, took on 11 coyotes that went after some sheep it was protecting. Only 3 of the coyotes escaped. The other eight are in Coyote heaven. The incident made news all over. Even NPR reported it.
