    Grew up cattle farming. Loved as a kid. I would make them pets. The one we'd keep always got a name like supper, freezer or dinner. It was was the way of life. Going back to that this year again.

    Last year we started buying small stocker calves to raise. From the first day we explained to our then 3 year old is they will become hamburger to feed us and others. But our job is to give them a great life while they are here. Raise our food with integrity and ethics.

      I don't know how they enjoy the screaming of the little ones but other than that they have a peaceful place to live.
      Thanks for being with those great animal lovers.

    I life in a city, I don’t butcher my food chicken pork or beef. I have been to a butcher and watched and on a farm and watched it strengthens my belief that I want good farmers and good farms to supply my food. I like to see my food is well cared for. We are very lucky to have a “farm to butcher to me “ shop near our home. Have met the farmers that raise beef for this butcher and they have a day we can go to their farm if your up to it. It really makes a difference knowing where your food is raised

    We just bought a rusty trailer like that as we prepare to get our first cow/steer. We needed one anyway for the sheep and goats and pig we have, so this is an upgrade for us from heaving them into a cage in the truck bed! We used the metal roofing coating/paint to cover ours. Here in AL, the shiny aluminum look reflects the heat away and keeps the animals cooler. Our barn cats now use it as a daytime napping area. It took an afternoon and not much $ since we had the roof coating from patching the barn up. We love your videos and are thankful for all you share. We've learned so much. Hubby is binge watching all the hay videos as this season is this first time ever cutting and putting up hay. :-)

    When you are a farmer, you sometimes have to put your feelings to the side about the animals. In the past, we hand fed animals because of mother's rejection (this is where a person gets attached) and still butchered them when of age. Great show and keep up the good work. Small farmers makes the world go around much better.

Only concern yourself with things you can fix, change, or give preventative measures. You and Hillary are fine folk Pete! Never forget that. Just keep on truckin. If we can't use our actual working pens, we just make an alley out of panels and attach it to whatever pen the sorted loaders are in, back trailer up to the alley, push cattle into alley and up into trailer. Takes about 10 minutes, and the most force I use is shaking a rattle paddle now and then. And Im talking about calves, steers, big cows...I can't imagine having to plan a whole day out just to load a few steers. But, I reckon if you have the time and patience, keep on truckin', my friend. Happy Fathers Day to you.

    its okay jay, some people like to make fun. our cows normally are pretty tame about trailer but when we when we take them out of their winter home they are kind of rowdy to get out in the pasture. but normally they load fairly well. also there is a really good speech called "so god mad a farmer". you should listen to it.

    Your a great farmer Pete and Hilary. Respect your daily work to care for animals during their time of life. Most people buy beef, pork, and poultry at the store. Yesterday here in SE Virginia, I was driving behind a large semi truck pulling a large pig trailer full of young pigs going to the Smithfield plant not far away. My wife sees their eyes and freaks out. All I see is bacon and smoked ham slices. But, how were these pigs raised? How are they going to be slaughtered at the plant. Smithfield plant is now owned by the chinese. I would rather consume Pete's pork since it's raised in excellent conditions. Thanks Pete and Hilary.

    I have no issues with what you are doing. I don't think I could do it because I get too emotionally attached. I don't think I could even number them. It was odd watching and thinking, "This is the last few hours of their life." But you are 100% right, it's a business, that's the point of raising them, you treat them well, the beef is probably phenomenal. I'm very happy you present your farm and allow us to watch.

  • @TheMrrappel
    @TheMrrappel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Honestly, I don't think I could personally kill a cow I raised myself (never had to do it or the opportunity), that being said, I also hunt deer, I've done it to broilers myself, I wouldn't feel right about sending chickens off to a butcher, but if it's raise cattle with a good life and in a good respectable way where they aren't stressed to eat and grow in a year, it's hard to see a problem with it, I don't see too many animal rights activists taking in cattle that would've gone off to the butcher to let them graze for the rest of their lives, I think that Pete is someone every farmer should aspire to be, at least what he shows in his videos, not every farmer is a factory farmer, it really shows

    In my time as a Hay dealer, I sold hay to a few Cattle dealers. and they move a lot of stock. and I've seen some really inhumane methods to dealing with steers, bulls,cow. and calves.so I whole heartedly approve of your logic and methods to the way you raise and treat your stock. and like you have said time and time again. your raise them for food. / to be butchered. and I for one agree that they are living a lot better life span before they go to the butcher's than I seen at those dealer's I mentioned. Thanks for taking the time to share and explain to the Non-farming, non knowledgeable viewers.

    Happy Fathers Day Pete. I never thought about it but I can see the resemblance to Jay Leno-when he was younger! Growing up in the late 60’s and early 70’s, we had about 6 or 7 head that we ran with my Uncles 60 or so. I can identify with a lot that you are doing and your equipment. My dad always finished our steers in a stall for at least 2 weeks with sweet feed to fatten them up and make sure anything they had eaten that would make the meat taste bad was gone. Friend of mines family took theirs straight off the field and one year their steer apparently ate some bitter weed (common here in the south) and it tasted so bad they had to throw all of it away! One of my dads favorite jokes: a cousin went to visit family and that night they had a big beef roast for dinner. As it went around the table none of the kids took any. When he asked why, one of the cousins said that was old Ben and they just couldn’t. The cousin said, “send him down here, I didn’t know him so well!”
    Now that I’m retired, and watching you on your C, I’ve ordered some parts to resurrect my dads old Farmall C-was a favorite of mine growing up. Keep up the good work!

    A bit late but happy Father's Day Pete. In business or survival it is not about playing God. God provided the animals we have today and throughout history. Man has played God by mix breeding and dna twisting making different breeds. What you do is not playing God. Sure you pick and choose who lives and dies but that is something nature would do anyway. I am inspired by your videos and lifestyle/farm style. I'm not doing cattle but I hope to adopt a technique or two like your chickens and the free range you have set up, the separation in your cattle grazing and how you maintain. I am getting into dairy goats, something I've had a passion for for quite some time now. I enjoy the equipment, I enjoy how you treat your animals, and I enjoy the techniques you have created, discovered, or adopted. I can never wait for your next video. I am an animal lover but I also have to eat and feed my family.
