I lived in Colchester from 1979 to 2002 and was 21 in 1986. We lived in Glentress Close (Magdalen Wood / St. John's) although I now live in Whitstable in Kent. My family still live in Colchester and Wivenhoe though... Fascinating videos!
Thanks for the reply. It does seem strange to me, that all these homes have been built but without shops or businesses nearby. The estate I live in, Greenstead has a "central hub" as it were with shops, library and even a tanning salon! Shrub End has a small shopping area as does Montgomery and St Michaels. Just seems the basics get neglected, build loads of homes, don't worry about where they're going to get things or how they get there. :)
Thanks for this, I lived in Ipswich Road for almost 50 years and had to move last year sadly. You stopped not far from my house at the end. Yes is a lot busier now but I really miss home :(
+TheWurn2 Oh yes, very close! I lived by the pedestrian crossing near Goring Rd from 1967 to last October! Really interesting to watch these videos, I remember when Tesco's was new, how things have changed.
So, having seen and experienced the changes in Colchester over the last 26 years, do you think it's changed for the better, or worse? Having watched all 10 videos, one thing I noticed a lot of, was less commercial or warehouses and docks (Hythe/Rowhedge) and lots more homes (Highwoods, Myland and Mile End). Sad to see so much countryside gone really.
Overall the main difference which makes it worse, I think, is the increase in aggression on the roads and in the Town Centre at night ( not just Colchesters problem!) .People seemed to be more laid back then and as credit wasnt so easy to come by they didnt crave what they couldnt afford. As you asked what changes are for the better I would be pushed to think of any, certainly not the First Site black hole (who needs a Bus Park anyway?).
As I have commented before there is another 100,000 people in the Borough now than there was in 1986 all trying to get into the same small central area and station for commuting so I would say things have changed for the worse on that front.I now live in a village to avoid all the traffic! The changes at the Hythe and Rowhedge were inevitable some are OK some not. Highwoods and Myland could do with their own town centre near the new Park and Ride in my opinion.
Sorry but I only did what is posted. In hindsight it would have been a good idea to do more but time was limited. I reckon another six hours I could have done every street!

+stevealexR1 Glad you enjoyed all the videos, they have recently passed 100,000 hits, I never dreamed they would be so popular.

+xbrowneyedgirl67x I lived where I parked for 25 years from 1950 to 75 so we must have been close neighbours for a while! Glad you enjoyed the videos.

I will have to do it on a mobility scooter or in a hearse!!
Old place ,Middle age houses.Nothing modernised. A neighborhood like a village. You're missing just witches.
Just saw my house 😃
