  • "I Got Rhythm" is a piece composed by George Gershwin with lyrics by Ira Gershwin and published in 1930. The song is part of the musical Girl Crazy and it quickly became a jazz standard. Its chord progression, known as the "rhythm changes", is the foundation for many other popular jazz tunes.
    This is the original transcription of Gershwin.

    Amazing! I like Hamelin's performance of this very much, and of course Andrew Watts (if that's his name)!

    Loverley! It's not swung (re comments below) - it's a perfect rendition of what's written! Played with a wonderful light and jolly touch. Gorgeous.

    Demonstrates the overlap between ragtime and jazz well

    and this is why jazz will probably always be the purest form of music.

    On IMSLP, it says that the sheet music isnt available in the US.
    So instead, I screenshooted every slide from this video, cropped them, and pieced them together in google docs.
    Take that IMSLP. 😂

    Why is the pianist playing it swung? I mean, it's very well-played, and sounds great, but there's no indication that that's what's meant to be played

    • @awesomepianosheetmusic888
      @awesomepianosheetmusic888  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      You’re right, it’s not explicitly mentioned in the score. However, I think most interpretations of the piece are played in swing time. So it’s not an exception

    • @klop4228
      @klop4228 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@awesomepianosheetmusic888 really? I've heard a couple that aren't swung (Hamelin being the one that comes to mind) and when I played it my teacher specifically said that it shouldn't be swung. I seem to remember Gershwin not swinging it, but that might have been another arrangement.
      I suppose it's down to interpretation. Both ways sound good.

      @@klop4228 I think capturing a mood is important as much as anything. In jazz music you do swing, and this being a neo-classical/jazz it’s understandable that some people do swing 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @klop4228
      @klop4228 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@lefinlay I suppose that's fair. I don't have a massive problem with it (and there's plenty of Baroque music people play 'inégal' despite no indication), it was just slightly bizarre to me because I'd never heard it this way!

      @@klop4228 I think unless you’re playing in a competition, there’s no harm in adding your own spin on (frankly any era) a piece. I don’t believe classical music should be out on a pedestal; we have no issues with covers of modern music. And it’s fun and interesting seeing how performers do interpret music 😅

    gotta say, kinda disappointed with this performance. the worst offense by far is the incorrect rhythms in the 8th and last measures that change the feeling too much, robbing the syncopation from the last measure. the performer also removed the pedaling from the exposition of the theme so we didn't get that contrast with the second statement of it. the last notes of each phrase before the octave a thingy are way too short, they're tenuto not staccato. and maybe it was just because i had already had my opinion soured, but i didn't feel like the crescendo into the forte before the piano restatement of the theme was good, it felt like it petered out and shied away rather than providing contrast. many performers rely too much on the pedal as a crutch but i think this performance could use some more, or at least holding the notes as indicated.

      What a misinformed opinion. This isn't beethoven, it's gershwin. Completely different performance practice. I thought the performer was fine, it's groovy and feels as it's intended, which counts for more here than any of the BS you mentioned.
