Hello everyone ... question: do you know why the French Foreign Legion and the GIGN are not in the French Special Foces? Two of the most elite units in the World!
The french foreign legion is not a special operation force, it is an army corps with the particularity that foreigners can join it, they do the same job as other regular french regiments. They do have commando groups inside of the regiments (paratroopers commando for the 2nd REP and moutain commando for the REG) but they don't do Special ops. As for the GIGN well its a bit complicated, they can be used temporarily by the special ops command (if french are involved in a hostage situation overseas its most likely that GIGN will be called in support of French special ops units) but the COS is not much fond of the GIGN doing their job because it is not a COS unit, however the GIGN has already been deployed in Kosovo and Afghanistan to capture war criminals and Al quaeda leaders with special forces. So GIGN role in special ops is a rather complicated matter lol lets just say that sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.
