I'd have to say that this is the Ray Floyd of TH-cam reviews, and more specifically, the Nick Faldo of NES Open Tournament Golf reviews.. and no shame in calling back that gorgeous ace on US 10, Fozzy. Fun video, and thanks for the shoutout!

I'm surprised to hear SNES Drunk is into golf. How posh!!
But the video is nice and the graphics are both smooth and surprisingly detailed for a NES game! Makes me wonder which golf games on Sega Genesis are worth playing 😊

@@AB0BA_69This does look fun for the NES; but after playing Neo Turf Masters on the Neo Geo for so many years, it's literally the only golf game I've ever truly loved. (Emulated of course; because I'm poor). But I did feed many a quarter into a New cabinet that happened to have it in the line up.

Mario certainly does seem shoehorned into this title. The Japanese and Western versions of this game are so different; each is essentially a ROM hack of the other. (For those unaware, the Japanese title is "Mario Open Golf"; still, the game could have easily not starred Mario and it would seem no different.) The Japanese release has no Tournament Mode; the object is to unlock five additional courses: Starting in Japan, you'll then unlock courses in Australia, France, Hawaii, the UK, and finally the "Extra" course, which is a mix of the previous courses' holes. Both versions clearly have different objectives, and I encourage fans of this game who have access to import games (who own both a Family Computer and a Nintendo Entertainment System, no matter where you are in the world) to track down a copy of the other version, as they offer different experiences. Lastly, the point to the version differences is that this game left a legacy in later Mario Golf games: both the NES version's Tournament Mode, as well as the Famicom version's unlockable courses being featured in Mario Golf for Nintendo 64, for instance. I apologize for the lengthy comment, but I wish everyone a blessed day!

My grandfather had an NES when I was a kid and he'd let me and my brother play when we would visit him on the weekends. HOWEVER the only two games he had were this game and Contra. Needless to say when we were sick of Contra kicking our asses we would take turns playing a little Mario golf to chill out. I could've sworn he was the only person who bought NES Open because I've never seen it anywhere else. Thanks for reminding me about this game!

Damn, the black box golf brings back memories. It was one of the very few gaming experiences I shared with my father back in the day. He didn't care much about video games (and also had very poor eyesight which only got worse with time), but he was a sports fan, and when we got the first NES, we would play some of these black box games together, specifically soccer, volleyball, tennis, kung fu and golf, or he would sit next to me as I played and comment on how all these things were in real sports. I miss him. Those were the days of our lives, the bad things in life were so few.

When I was between jobs there was this to play. I actually got pretty deep into it and had a lot of fun with it.

For an underrated hidden golf gem, try I Love Golf! on the SNES. It never left Japan but you can find a community translation. It plays much closer to Kirby's Dream Course than any other golf game. So, on the opposite direction from this one, it might not work for enthusiasts of the sport, but I think it's great as a casual game.

This game oozes nostalgia for me. Me and my cousins used to hit the ball out of bounds cause we thought the noise it makes was funny. I have a cool polaroid playing this as a kid on my NES around '93. Cool golf game :D It has a nice level of complexity, so that's not too hard if you are not into golf. But enough factors like in what kind of ground, distance, wind, ascending green etc. that make it interesting and the learning curve is pretty steep. Had lot of fun with it. And technically it's solid and good looking for a NES game.

Hey i got a story... I dont know if this ever happened to anyone else. When i was a kid in the 90s i had a super small (like a 15 inch" color tv from the late 80s to play my games on. And some random evenings, i would get nes games on one of the channels. Later i learned that the NES's "Y" cable on the back of the tv is actually sending radio signals for the images. I am totally guessing that my tv was picking one of my neighbors plays...... It couldn't have been a tv channel since it had no other connection other then my own NES. Reason why im writing this is coz it was nes GOLF that was on tv. I will never forget that. Did this ever happen to any of you?

I had quite a lot of fun playing Mario Golf: Advance Tour. I suppose I can try the ones on the 16 bit system someday (since I am not likely to go back to 8 bit systems)

highly recommend the gbc mario golf games (mario golf and mobile golf) if you like this format! imo they just feel more fun and snappy than the gba version.

You know, I don't care for golf in real life, but I like golf video games. Used to play a lot of golden tee in college, and played a lot of wii sports golf with my family. We still fire it up from time to time. And there was this pc game when I was a kid...can't remember the name, but it had bobcat goldthwait as the announcer and I enjoyed that.
