    This video is a game changer for me. Using the scan function in the phone's camera app, and have the scans automatically saved as a PDF, and then integrate with email or text . So easy! Thank you.

    Thanks! I wish the Scan Documents feature could be set to default to black & white. The color scans are nice but often too large to email. I know there are other apps to do this, but it would be nice if the built-in scan feature would do it without having to choose black & white each time.

    On an iPad I use split screen a lot and can have 2 files windows open side by side. Drag and drop from one to the other is then possible. Very handy, just like a Mac desktop 😎 I use this feature a lot to move files around my numerous NAS drvies on my home network. Some are proper NAS others just server Mac Minis with hard drives attached.
    Great to be able to do useful stuff on an iPad relaxing on the comfy seats in the kitchen rather than the office desk.
    Remote control of the various desktop machines with the iOS app ‘Screens’ is also really handy.

    Steve Jobs was adamant that the old hierarchical file system was confusing to most users. He talked about this briefly in one of his presentations. I used to be an ardent hierarchical file manager nesting folders and files deeper and deeper into my setup. Now and because of files I just have a few app based folders and iOS does the rest. I collapsed all off my old file trees and now focus on file names and file types in my filing strategy, allowing Search to do the heavy lifting of the file management like in photos and music. I really like how iOS picks the correct app folder for my different files every time. Even for third party apps iOS know, for example, to open my PDF Expert folder for storing pdfs. Thanks for the informative video.

    Very informative video, picked up some new tips, thanks. However, the thing that really frustrates me, is that Files (iCloud Drive), doesn’t play nicely with the Readdle apps I use.
    I have ScannerPro, PDF Expert & their Documents apps, but depending on which device I use, iPhone, iPad or MacBook, the folder names are different.
    e.g, on my iPhone I may have a folder called Documents by Readdle which correctly displays the files, but on my iPad those documents are in a folder named ScannerPro or PDF Expert on my MacBook?? I never know where to look for the correct files 🤷‍♂️🤬.

    On my iPhone, reading PDFs vertically within the Files app can sometimes be annoying. I found that reading PDFs horizontally within the Books app to be more intuitive. To copy a PDF from Files to Books: Open FILES app » long select desired PDF » select SHARE » select BOOKS. BONUS: The iPhone Books data is automatically synchronized with iTunes on my PC during iPhone backup.

      Coming from an android device.. i am bit confused why i have to “share” the pdf file to books app again ? I can not find my other pdf files in books app unless i share it there. Its like i need to duplicate the file first which will eat up storage space.

    I started to actually Files a month ago when getting hired at a new job.
    I at first would just screenshot documents until I sent myself and email and recalled I could save it
    Sadly I don’t have a MacBook to keep everything organized
    But so far that files is so useful for downloadable files from workplaces

    This video has made me look at the built-in “files“ app again and one of the benefits I’ve realised is the significantly smaller file size of a scanned document, rather than taking a picture with the iPhone camera (in my test, 1.2 MB versus six MB!) i’m still confused about the benefits of the options when there is a requirement to copy documents i.e. should I do it through “files“ or “notes“ or the camera….And what are the advantages/disadvantages of each e.g. which would be the best way of being able to compress the file further, particularly an image taken on the camera - maybe the subject of another one of your wonderful videos :-)

    • @donlibes
      @donlibes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point about doc format vs image format. If your images are consuming so much space on your device, rather than managing them yourself, consider using a photo manager that intelligently manages photos such as Photos (using iCloud) or Lightroom which can offload the high-res versions automatically.

    • @craigf3277
      @craigf3277 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good callout. I'm also curious how files works with the photos folders and if you can actually move a photo a different folder, but I'll have to play with that. This has to be most under utilized app on the iPhone.

    Nicely done video sir! I’m in the process of decommissioning my last Windows desktop and exclusively using iOS devices and a 14TB hard drive on my router. I was vaguely aware of the power of the Files app but have much to learn and anticipate it will be the key to making my system work as I need it to. I suspect I will be back to this video a time or three before I “absorb” all of this. Thanks for putting it all together in a logical and quick paced format. 👍 (subscribed)

    • @flyc3
      @flyc3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      My understanding (which could be wrong) is that any file with a cloud and down arrow through it is stored in the cloud. When you tap the file, it’s downloaded and available offline. If your iPhone storage is low, unused files are then removed and put back in the cloud. I seem to recall reading this some time ago so it might have changed (or even be tosh!).

    Well, your clear explanation of *why* i might want to use files , which came at the very end, would have been better at the start! The main part was describing *how* to use files, but theres always more incentive on how to learn to use something if you know *why* you might want to !
    Glad i stuck with it to the end as i was generally mystified what files was until now and just avoided it !

    I wish someone would show how this looks while plugged into a Macbook. I just bought my first Apple product, Mini 6 and it doesn't work well at all with my Windows PC. When you plug an Android phone in, the phones files simply become part of the PC file structure, which is nice. Is it the same when you plug an I-Phone into a Macbook? If so, that'll go a long way toward my decision to go all in with Apple, as this mini 6 is really growing on me. I'm sure there are videos out there showing how that works, I just haven't stumbled on one yet

    Thank you for this very helpful video on the Files App. I have a short question on the search you show in 9:48 min:
    On my phone the document-with-the-magnifying-glass-icon says: "Name contains "test"". Consequently, my app does not find files, that include the word "test" inside the document. It only finds the documents with "test" in the file or folder name.
    Do you know if this has something to do with iCloud+ (I use the free version)? Or if this could be due to using a different region setting on my iphone?

    Very informative video. Scanning a document directly to the Files app is very convenient. However, apparently it scans the document using the phone’s camera; therefore, it may not be as professional looking as scanning using the “Notes” app. Any idea if that’s correct? Good to have options. Scan to the Files app for convenience. Scan to the Notes app for a more professional looking document.

    Is there any option for optimise iphone storage like optimize Mac storage? Suppose something I upload through Mac into iCloud then it should appear and access through iPhone iCloud also locally on iPhone without internet. something like automatic download iCloud files on iPhone similar to Mac. e.g. All the iCloud files should be stored locally automatically..

    I use this app to store photos videos so I don’t use my phone storage, but the files are never downloaded so I have to download them every time I want to open one and if I’m at a location with poor service I cannot access the file which sucks!

    Thanks for the videos they are a great resource. I cannot seem to get the spotlight search to search into the files folder. I noticed on your phone when you did the search demo with spotlight you had sub-headings which showed Reminder, Files, App Store and Siri Suggested Websites. All I can see on my iPhone 13 is Siri Suggestions. Can you show me how to access the files folder from the spotlight search? Thanks, in advance.

      I could be wrong about this (it's quite confusing), but head to Settings, then Siri and Search. Make sure that 'show in spotlight' is toggled on. Then scroll down to Files, tap into it and ensure that 'show app in search' and 'show content in search' are both toggled on. Do this for any other apps you'd like to appear in there. Do let me know if this fixes the issue for you!

      @@ProperHonestTech I had the 'show in spotlight' toggled on and also in the files tab below, the 'show app in search' and 'show content in search' were also toggled on. I restarted the iPhone to check if it made any difference but it did not. When using spotlight search I can only see the sub-heading 'Siri Suggestion' Just to let you know it is iPhone 13pro software version 15.4.1. Thanks, Andy
