Being a female of color this hits hard. I'm puerto Rican and my hair was damaged and it took me 7-8 years to make it good enough that it could be considered natural. I always wanted devacurl but could never afford it. If my hair had suffered the way you ladies have I would be curled up in a ball crying my life away. Our hair is already a topic of too kinky, too curly, to nappy. We're raised that relaxers are what we need to look pretty. Breaking out of that cycle to finally love your hair and then this crap happens? It's not right. I'm sorry you're going through this. My heart goes out to you.

It only takes a few ambers to start a wildfire...
I think it's a good thing that it's being talked about, because it's a real health issue. If the problem was just that it damaged and dried the hair, that's still sad but it's not too concerning. But here it actually affecting people's skin, causing hair loss, even scabbing on the scalp for people with more sensitive skin, that is SERIOUS.
It also shows major companies the other side of the coin when it comes to social media influence. These big popular brands have made billions of dollars by paying people on the internet to say good things about their products. But this movement is demonstrating how those same influencers can destroy those business by simply voicing out loud the concerns of their community, and even reaching out to a larger audience

I started using devacurl about 7 weeks ago (the week of Christmas) and my long waist length hair was FRIED. It was so damaged and matted that I could not even brush it. This past sunday, 2 days ago, I had to go to a hair salon by my house where the stylist could also not brush my hair. She had to cut my hair up to my collar bone. I wished I never bought it! Before that my hair was the healthiest its been in my life and I have been natural for 7 years. My hair is 100% virgin, it never has had heat and never has been dyed. It looks better now that I cut it off but my curl pattern is still really loose and yesterday at work a huge ball of hair just sitting on my sweater!

I have similar hair to yours and Devacurl did me the same. Dry, brittle hair that wouldn't hold moisture. That photo you showed of your wet, tangled, "rat's nest" hair looked exactly like the photo I took of mine while it was soaking wet. That's how I realized something was very wrong. My hair was so big, frizzy and tangled while wet when it had always been so loose and easy to fingercomb when wet. I have been cutting it off over the last year. But have used Devacurl at least a couple times in that year cause I didn't know that was the culprit!! So my hair is still not the way it used to be. Porosity is higher and I have to load it with moisture to avoid dryness. It's so unfair. Devacurl needs to recall their products.

What's weird to me is the things that people are saying that Deva is doing to their hair, only BLEACHING the hair can do! Think about it. Hair breakage, thinning, tangling, frizz, losing curl pattern, actual lightening of the hair, and on the scalp: lesions, scabs, inflammation. I have heard about dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis but I've never heard of bleaching causing those issues but who really knows for sure. I just wonder if and this is just a theory, if some chemical reaction caused a form of bleaching to happen when applied? So when some of these women left these products longer than others their symptoms were worse than some. Who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Also, to all the "victims" that don't have any chemical dyes or bleach in their hair, natural henna might do wonders. There is even neutral (aka colorless) henna if you don't want copper or Auburn tones in your hair.
It helps re-seal the hair scales and forms a protective layer on every individual stand of hair. It is also very relieving for itchy scalps.
Just make sure you wait at least 8 weeks after a chemical dye, and warn your hair dresser before getting any color, because the hair can turn green or break off when mixed with chemicals.

It’s horrible this has happened to you and other DC consumers. I was a regular user of the Arc Angel Conditioner, Firm Gel, B’Leave In, and infrequently used the Supercream. I’ve experienced all the issues other users have complained of but attributed it to natural aging and health. I stopped use about 1-2 months ago and hair loss/thinning reduced, manageability improved, less dandruff/flaking/scabbing and even my color seemed healthier. I’ve never colored, permed, or chemically processed my hair.
Can I absolutely prove DC is the problem? No, but I cannot recommend it and I won’t use it again.
I wish you the best. You and your hair are still very beautiful. Hopefully the damaged hair can grow out and be trimmed away and you’ll get your best hair back. Stay positive and don’t hesitate to pamper your hair with nice SAFE moisturizing products.

I've seen a few comments about the issues being caused by a lack of proper cleansing, the accumulation of product buildup etc... Especially one that suggested that you NEED to use sulfates to keep your hair and scalp healthy.
I cannot emphasize enough how WRONG this idea is. SLS, the most popular sulfate is used in its pure form to clean car engines...
I've had chronic sebum dermatitis on my scalp for over 12 years now, combined with eczema and sulfate allergy on my entire body. I've been only using sulfate free shampoos and body washes for 5 years, since I got diagnosed with the allergy, and i never had my hair falling out (though my personal experience might be less relevant because I am not a curly girl).
But it would be too big a coincidence for everyone's hair to start acting up around the same time, regardless of having followed the CGM for 7 years or 2 months. If it was caused by buildup, it would have either happened earlier or much later on their journey. Like it would happen after roughly 6 months for everyone, regardless of the products and brands used. Here you see damage happening after only a few weeks of starting to use the brand, the products HAVE to be to blame.
Also, you should watch Kenna's video. She's a biochemist for the beauty industry and she explains that the amount of buildup necessary to cause hard loss is so important that you would see and feel a layer of product before seeing the damage. In her opinion, the problem most likely comes from the ingredient providers, that somehow tamper with the ingredients to increase profit or "stretch" the ingredients in which supply has a hard time following the demand (like some essential oils). Pretty much in the same way as some drugs are mixed with other products (think glass powder in cocaine). The big issue is that the suppliers do not disclose what is actually in the ingredient, and the tempering is made in such a way that it is not detectable with regular testing.
Let's hope the FDA will take the issue seriously and shine the light on those devastating products.

I'm not sure if it's just the no poo products. I couldn't afford anything from the line, so I would buy just the styling cream. My hair has thinned out and my scalp gets super itchy. Idk if other people are having the same issue, but this is what has been happening to me.

I tried DevaCurl once and was highly disappointed in the past. I hope DevaCurl takes their products off the shelves. 💙

OMG, I've watched so many videos involving the deva curl scandal and I had yet to see someone with same damage that I had after using. Unfortunately for me, I used the products for about 4-5 months while I was transitioning, so when the damage was happening I couldn't really tell because I was new to curly girl method. But I experienced the same thinning and breakage especially in the back parts of my hair (which sadly for me takes the longest to grow back)... From my personal standpoint, I think there is a chemical that when it reacts with warm water acts like a perm/relaxer which is causing people to loose their patterns, have itchy/dry scalps, lots of fall out/breakage, and difficulties detangling (which are all things I experienced when using Deva Curl)...Great video, thank you for sharing your story!

I used DEVACURL religiously and I was very skeptical about it too!! After washing my hair out it would feel very rough and hard to de tangle. I stopped using it a few months back... it’s crazy how you spend so much on a product that isn’t worth it 😞

I never realized what was going on with my hair till I saw all these videos as well I honestly thought i was doing things wrong in the past before I even used a diffuser I would sleep on a cotton pillows not wear a bonnet and my hair would last for 4 days and look super good still and after I started using devacurl my hair would be so bad after not even 2 days I thought it was my pillow or because I wasn’t wearing a protection over my curls everytime I would take a shower like handful of hair would be coming out my head my mom would even say wow you loose so much hair and I thought it was because my hair was so much longer and thicker than it ever has been it’s honestly so upsetting because I finally learned to love my curly hair when I’ve been flat ironing it everytime since I was 8 to around 15 years old even after coming home from the beach I would flat iron it I never let it be curly in front of anyone and now that I finally love it it’s like it’s getting stripped away from me all the back pieces of my hair (probs because I put the most product there) is all like wavyish not even 2 hours after diffusing my hair there’s absolutely no volume and frizz all over it looks like I’ve been electrocuted and I switched back to shea moisture and it’s helping a tiny bit but my hair just looked fried... do you guys have any tips on how to fix it ? No matter what anyone says I just can’t chop my hair id rather it be like this than chop it

I’ve been following the devacurl controversy videos and personally I used the product for two and a half months summer of 2019 (July thru September). During that time I also noticed loss of curl pattern, itchy scalp, that fried dry feeling, and breakage. By November my hair was short, thin, uneven, and just bad. So I decided to use ACV to cleanse my hair (because I was still on the no-poo bandwagon) and did that weekly from December to January. I bought a ez detangler brush and different conditioners, leave ins, moisturizers, and styling gels. And during those months my hair slowly bounced back in length and density. This month (feb) I went back to using sulfate free shampoo and well as using the conditioner and my hair is softer and feels healthier.
I’m just sharing my experience recovering from devacurl hair damage. I know it’s different for everyone and difficult if there was long term use and irreversible side effects. But for short term users like me, maybe there’s hope to bounce back. It took me three months to regrow what was lost in summer and fall of last year.
    Good luck, love and light!

I purchased the sample pack from DC, while using the conditioner my hair felt like it had been fried, a severely tangled mess. I added lots of conditioner (a different brand) I got it straightened out with a lot of hair loss, I called Diva Curl to ask for advice, I was told I probably had a protein sensitivity and could not use that brand because of the amount of protein in it. They sent me a web site to look up the symptoms of protein overload and told me to use the original brand of shampoo and conditioner because of the lower amount of protein. I ordered more products from them because of the holiday sales, plus I purchased more from the store. My hair kept coming out, very dry, and the part in my hair was so wide. I quit using the products, gave some to my granddaughters and stored the rest. My hair is still not back to normal, I am just glad I didn't use it for a longer period of time. Your hair is beautiful, I hope it quickly reverts back to your crowning glory.

The thing is I noticed a difference in using it and stop using it about year or two ago. I was very aware of it because I’m a hairstylist and I’m very picky about what I put in my hair. But I used to use diva curl religiously and then I just stopped working. Something happened to the formulation of the product I don’t know what but it changed. Somewhere in the changing of ownership something happened with the product. I am really thankful Because if I would’ve continued using the products and had hair loss or hair damage.... I would’ve wanted to find someway. Especially since I already have genetic alopecia I don’t need anything else happening to thin my hair. And I’ve already cut my hair short twice because of damage I don’t need to do that again.

I think people need to start looking at the curly girl method. All these symptoms people are saying they are getting I have had and iv never touched deva curl . My hairdresser made me stop the curly girl method. Applying all them products is suffocating your hair. My hair come out in chunks . I was constantly itchy . My hair was flat lifeless . I went to the hairdresser and she went mad at the amount of product in my hair . And banned me from co washing . When your putting so much product In you need a proper wash to get it out . There is no proof yet and it's unfair if it's not the product. What's the reason for my hair getting the exact same symptoms when iv never touched it .

I haven’t followed the curly girl method for a while. I make sure to cleanse my hair properly and since I terminated the use of deva curl my hair has started bouncing back. Like I’ve stated before, not everyone who smokes gets cancer. Everyone reacts to things differently but this was most definitely their products affecting my hair

What are the ingredients on the packaging if you don't mind answering.... I treat haircare products like I treat my food... I eat nothing with stabilizers or preservatives... Raw form is the best... So I make my own gels using aloe leaf, flaxseeds, even black tea rinses, coconut oil, olive oil... I'm gonna look up the ingredients in devacurl, and check them against my cosmetic ingredient book.
