  • Climbing Humphreys Peak - Flagstaff, Arizona
If you live in Arizona, you know about Humphreys Peak. It's the highest point in Arizona, and if you drive around Flagstaff, you can't miss it. Yet for some reason, we've never climbed it.
That changed a few weeks ago.
Humphreys Peak trail is tough and amazing. Highly recommended.

What an awesome hike. Kinda busy at the top and so many false summits can be frustrating. Ugh bugs! And thank you for the laughs...

The thing no one tells you is how long that walk back to the truck seems. I thought we'd speed down the mountain. But all those roots and rocks had a different plan in store. Took forever. But you're right; definitely worth it.

My wife and I went up last year during the summer (monsoon) terrible mistake. 🤣 Literally once we reached the peak a black cloud was heading right for us. We quickly took our pic with the sign and went down as it hailed (marble size) chunks. The thunder wouldnt stop and other people coming down, their hair would stand straight up because of the static in the air. The wooden markers were buzzing with electricity as well which made us a good target for lightening. So, moral of the story, try not to hike it during monsoon season lol.
Anyway, love your vids man! Always giving me ideas on where to go. 👌

    Thumbs Up BUT HECK--
That looks easy. Back when I was young we had to hack our way thru with Bowie Knives and Machetes.
Our Burro got scared and jumped off a 6 Thousand Cliff and took our water and food in his pack. Also while performing his Rodeo act the burro took the one compass we owned. Luckily we saved that half Gallon of strong whiskey because we had to hydrate with something.
We came out of the wilderness in Phoenix.

I made that climb several times. Never saw any sort of insect on the peak! Global warming? Was there once when the wind blew so hard, you could hardly walk. The peaks are a sacred place to me. My wedding was in Lockett Meadow. The inner basin is gorgeous, especially when the aspen leaves are turning. So many good memories on that mountain. You used to be able to ride the ski lift up high up on Agassiz, then cut over to the saddle. Much easier. There was also a sketchy 4wd road to the saddle between Fremont & Doyle. You could hike a trail on the inside of the peaks that was a relatively gentle climb to the saddle by Agassiz, then along the ridge to the top of Humphries. The first few times I hiked there, that trail from Snow Bowl didn’t even exist. That was all before they designated the Kachina Peaks wilderness area. You can still hike that sketchy 4wd road, and I think there is a trail up from the Inner Basin now, too - something I always wanted. If you have not been to Lockett Meadow & the inner basin, you should check it out sometime. So beautiful!

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

We definitely need to explore more around Flag. Lockett Meadow has become so popular (at least when the leaves change) that it's kept us away. We'll have to go explore more up there this summer when its too hot here in the valley.

@@JerryArizona Long time viewer, first time commenter. There are a few species of gnats that only live above 7,000 ft. They thrive off the small amount of water left after the snow melt deep in the soil and are most active in the early Summer. If you do the climb again, you’ll avoid the swarm anytime after July, early August. I love that hike, post Monsoon season right around September, early October. Tina was not a fan. Although I complained the most, mainly on the way down. For some reason, the way down felt like it was 3X longer than the way up.

Just know for some of us that's just no Mountain or mountain Peak.. that is a very Sacred place... It holds this earthly place in balance with the heavenly realm. It's a place of prayer it's not a recreational site. It's a spiritual center. I hope you and others will be mindful of that!!..

    Can I bring my dog?

Not positive, but searching online it says you can but you have to have them on a leash. I don't remember seeing anybody with dogs this trip, but it's been a while so I may have forgotten.

You had bug issues because you failed to offer a prayer, reflect and show any reverence for the mountain. Ands it's place and purpose in this world. Be lucky all you had we're bug issues.. could have been worse !!
