  • Hiking my first Colorado 14er Longs Peak, quite possibly the scariest hike in Colorado it is located in Rocky Mountain National Park, just outside Estes Park. This 15 mile overnight hike was my first solo backpacking trip EVER and one of the most challenging solo hikes I have done. For more on Colorado check out my blog: alicesadventuresonearth.com/h...

    We backpacked Longs for our 25th anniversary. Sunset at the Boulder field made the rock look like they were on fire. Longs was our first 14er back in 2006. This year we're celebrating 40th anniversary and we submitted 23 14ers so far. Keep on hiking.

    I climbed Long’s Peak twice in the early 1970s . Back then, the National Park had cables installed on the mountain side past the Keyhole; the cables were several hundred yards in length and were placed very close to the edge of the vertical face on the east side of the Peak. Here the mountain side was very, very smooth. This placement provided a spectacular view of the mountain’s vertical face and the several 1000 foot drop. That was really terrifying!! I think the Park removed the cables because of the hazardous position for climbers. We then descended on the “backside” (west) of the mountain. Long’s was my favorite of all the Colorado 14ers. Your video was terrific. Thank you.

    I did this hike in 2009! Thanks for bringing back so many good memories! Those open top outhouses at the Boulder field were kinda weird! I had the most difficulty getting by the huge bolder at the top of the trough, I believe it’s called the choke stone. It took me numerous attempts to get past that spot. Thanks!

    Thank you for that Alice. I climbed Longs 42 years ago and didn't get past the narrows because it started to snow. I've always wondered what the rest of the climb was like. Now I know. I did hike to Chasm lake a few times to go fishing with a park ranger friend of mine. Even that hike is substantial. If you want a nice leisurely one day 14er try Grays and Torres.

    Good for you, young lady, that was a treat for me, I climbed it about 45 years ago just once, a one day hike, but this is the first video I've watched of a climb and with the modern image stabilized HD/4K cameras, it's almost like being there again. It's a "must do" hike for anyone who lives in Colorado and is able to do it.

    Thank you for sharing. My friends and I did the same hike in one day, started our hike at midnight, reached the summit around noon. Scary and beautiful! On the way down, I almost fell near the trough and then we got caught in a storm after the Keyhole...rained, snowed, hailed, and lightning all around us. When you could feel your hair rising and falling with every lightning strike and at the edge of the Boulder field, you never realize how fast you can run across boulders. We later read that 14 hikers had to be rescued from that storm. I miss Longs. There is a quote that I’m paraphrasing “When people ask what it was like climbing a mountain, I could write a story, draw a picture, or write a song about it, but you’ll never understand it. You are on the outside looking in. You’ve got to experience it to actually understand it. “

    • @AliceFordAdventures
      @AliceFordAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Love the quote. I am so glad you and your party made it out of the lightning zone. There’s a reason they say to be out of there by noon. Thanks for sharing your story

      You can tell it was hard to climb wearing her backpack, as the weight almost knocked her off balance several times (what saved her is that she remembered to keep leaning forward). Let's just say most girls aren't smiling and laughing this much on their first backpacking trip.
