Last time I dealt with a low compression cammed up Ford big block it liked 38-40 degrees total timing all in by about 2600-2800 rpm. So I think you’re on the right track there. But the biggest help was a stall converter to keep the rpm’s upon acceleration to compensate for the anemic compression. But being a Jag owner, you know this already! Haha!

My folks had a 69 ford station wagon when I was young .
It had a 429 in it...
My cousin was living with us while he attended a tech school for auto repair...
When the wagon started running rough , my cousin volunteered to fix er'.
He put a Holly 4 barrel , and a few other go fast items..
My dad was Not about wasting money on such , but my cousin got all the parts for free...
My dad roated the "snow treads" when he drove it ..
Then looked seriously at me & my cousin & asked, what the hell did yall do to my wagon ??
A few yrs later I rebuilt that 429 & dropped it into my 72 F-100 , short box with a 4 speed outta something..
It was wicked strong in that truck .
So that is a decent motor ..not great on mpg , but at 16 who cares, right ...lol.😊

Man, I always loved these c'atrucks. Ford or Chevy flavor. I had a 71 Elco 350/350 a couple years ago but it was in really bad shape body and floor wise. Ran like a top though. Taught me a lot about carbs (thanks Thunderhead298) . Had short gears, I really hated going 70 at 3300+ rpm. I am more of a cruiser guy I guess.

Love to see more of this Ranchero, Dalton! You know, being it's a '73 engine with dished pistons, it may be a case of too much cam and not enough compression. I had a 1973 Ford Ranchero with the 351 V-8 engine and automatic transmission . That was in Wisconsin where there is allot of road salt used . I had to do allot of work such as replaced the floorboards in the cab and replace the entire bed floor with support members . Plus a bit of body replacement along the bottom sides of it . I even switched the seats in it to better and more comfortable seats . And I loved my Ford Ranchero and drove it for many years ! That was the most comfortable riding almost truck vehicle I ever owned back in 1985 and onward . It had a real frame under it and I beefed-up the rear suspension and added heavy-duty air shocks to it so it would carry a bit more weight , like a small pick-up truck but drove and rode more comfortable like a car . Very comfortable , big time and a good daily workhorse !! I drove that Ford Ranchero for many years and it was a workhorse with very comfortable seats and ride which handled better than a stock Ford Ranchero !!!! But sadly it succumb to road salt cancer of the frame and everything else . It was my daily driver and work vehicle all in one with great pulling capacity !!! What A Great Vehicle !!!!!!

Dalton, this seventy three year old man has reached a limit like the "gentlemans truck" Ranchero as I just was placed on hospice. Like you, your chevy and I am ford but any and all rigs have a sweet running rig that convinces ya to drive the other kids rig. I am now stuck using "91" octane or not run so dang good... trust me... I have a language for this that is stronger than the "PG" rating!!! I sure do like seeing the truck or car truck as not too many of these toy pickups look good even to me, a ford man at that. I am sure that you are not fond of all el Camano's that they made. As long as it got me to work, and safe, comfortable, plus made it kinda fun, well I drove a damn rambler. I do believe they called them AMX and son... that was one fun S.O.B!

Back in 90, my first summer back here, I bought one of those bug lights b/c we had bought a house with a pond (and a whole lot of acreage) not 100 ft from the back door. The first night it was out there I had to go out the next morning with a grain shovel to pick up the pile of dead ones under it. I ordered 2 more. By the next summer we could actually enjoy our back yard and pond at the close of a work day.
They are still out there all three. Never taken down form there 10 ft tall post for the last 23 yr.
I have bought other to put else where and I have never had one of them fail yet. Veery Very will made to this day. Bought one this yr and one three yrs ago. both doing well.

The 73's came with D3VE heads with much lower compression and a different chamber design. They also went from adjustable screw in stud mounted rockers to pedestal mounted non-adjustable. So out of the box with a simple swap to the older heads brings back alot of the power. He needs to date code the bottom end, the newer ones had different deck heights I believe, but not sure on the years of those changes. There were also different push rod lengths for different years.

I have a 67 Ford Ranchero with a 289 Hi-Po attached to a Muncie 4 sp rockcrusher transmission. Picked it up in 88 outside of Ft. Bragg for $200. It was a basket case with the motor and tranny sitting in the bed. Over the last 36 years, I've replaced/repaired the floor boards, cab corners, new after market fenders, the motor, tires, brakes, steering and suspension, refurbished the interior with bucket seats (to accommodate the floor shift), new exhaust and a coat of primer. I had the engine bored .30 over, got a valve job done on the heads, put new bearings, pistons, rings, oil pump water pump, mild camshaft, and a new holley 650 carb. The only thing I did to the tranny was put new gaskets and seals on it.
I have no idea how much I spent on it. Most of the work was done in the 90's after I got out of the Army. My best guess is I probably spent around $3K on it. It still sits in the barn. I drive it on occasion during the summer. It's fast, it's loud, it gets looks, and most importantly, it's exempt from NY vehicle inspections because of it's age.
Neighbor keeps bugging me to sell it because he had one in High School and loved it. He's up to $12,000, which is a pretty fair price for a modified/custom. I can't sell it though. I know I would suffer from Seller's remorse.

Not sure the yr of that block but even with D0VE-C heads it probably has the taller deck block with dish pistons that don't go to the top & could have a very wide quench distance making it unusable & possibly a lower compression ratio. Very early 71 (D1) blocks were still short deck at 10.300. By 72 all of them were 10.322. So that might be some of what's holding it back??

I had a '70 Torino with that 429 and a Hurst 4 speed from the factory. That thing made awesome torque. Didn't even need 1st or 2nd. She'd pass anything but a gas station.

Honestly since this thing is so clean I'd like to see you take this as far as you are planning to go with the Silver Dollar. Get it running real nice and do one of your good body and paint jobs on it. This thing would be a fun thing to cruise around with. Great video as always.

Let’s see everyone lose their mind. I have a 1977 F150 short bed 4x4 with a factory 429 -4V if I remember correctly it’s a 67 Thunder Jet maybe wrong on the engine year. But all factory all with a factory 6” lift. It was a BigFoot thing they did with 10 trucks. Dealership tried trading me a new for it, back around 2000. Getting ready to put it back on the road for my son. Factory Bigfoot blue. Lol Nice ride you got there! Great show!

yes yes yes more please my very first car was a 1973 Ford Ranchero Squire Deluxe now there is a hidden compartment behind the seat under the front part of the truck bed you get to it from inside the car should have a spare tire and all the jacking tools but there might be some hidden treasures in there . that car brought back so many memories thank you very much,

Wow you got a great deal on that Ranchero! There is a former Nike Ajax missile site a few miles from my house. They made an elementary school out of the barracks and the silos are still beneath the parking lot. They last opened it in 2005 and inspected them for environmental safety. It was featured in all the local papers at the time.

When it fired up I totally understood the giddy laughter.
When I bought my 2wd 76 short bed Silverado (500$ from a friend of a friend), I knew it was rusty, and probably needed alot, but it would start. I put a battery in it, and 5 gallons of gas, and a pair of front tires and drove it home.
It seemed to run kinda crappy at first, the baffles had blown out of the mufflers, and pushed up against the back and choked it. , It also had a 600 Edelbrock on it.....
So I put on a 750 demon, and cut the rotten mufflers off and slapped on a pair of cheap knockoff flowmasters.
It didn't sound stock. When I took the seat out I found a receipt from a speed shop for a rebuilt 454, .30 over flat top Pistons, "torquer stage 2" iron heads, Holley street dominator intake, "performance" cam......and then another receipt from a year later from the same speed shop saying,"metal found in trans pan" customer declined repair.
When I was done with the th400 it came off the back of the motor ....with all the bolts still in the block. Broke the bell housing all the way off.

Great video as usual. I love this Ranchero already. Im not 100% sure but that year of 429 i think has lower compression and more restrictive heads than previous years. The best years of the 429 made around 360 horsepower stock. But with some work it can be snappy

+1. 1973 was early smog years. Restrictive intake, restrictive heads, low compression ratio. And 385 blocks LOVE to breathe.

@@Nick-ue7iw yeah I thought so since it was an early smog era engine.

I had a Nike battery behind my house in New Jersey. It was so wild, all these busted up concrete buildings and rail tracks. They just dumped asphalt over the silo doors to keep people out of them. Love the channel!
